Thanks, one to remember for him for sure (and I'm so very bad at sprints in this game)! Blockhaus was dreadful and another prove of how hard rolling climbs are in game.
All things considered, we should be very happy after this first week though. With key stages spread out so widely, it's almost guaranteed that some have their form peak come too early.

Ruben couldn't follow the attacks on Izoard right away yet managed to catch up and drop the maglia rosa inside the last kilometer. With one week to go, Formolo showed some vulnerability on the last couple of stages. Our own Jonathan Caicedo set a brutal pace about halfway the climb, and caused many to get dropped from the breakaway. Herklotz did the rest and near the top the breakaway was down to them two. Jonathan seemed to crack near the summit of the second climb, yet he would make it back to drop Herklotz definitively 700 meters from the final KoM banner. A short descent later he could celebrate his second GT stage win with us.
Ruben tried a thing on the Stelvio but could not go for a long range solo attack. He had a tough patch on the second climb and tried to go alone in the descent to the line but Kudus closed the gap. And there I thought Ruben would regain the lead with the TT and have to defend it till the end. Instead Formolo beat him - I had no idea he could do TTs. Well, 2nd is just about certain, which would be a good result. Plus another stage win, nicely done. Is there still a minute to be gained on the final two stages?

So did I, but both time trials were a little too flat and he didn't have his best day on both occasions... Even if he doesn't manage to gain enough time on the final weekend, two stage wins and a podium finish shouldn't leave him with many regrets.

Stage 20 | 207.4 kms | Sondrio › Edolo/ Monte Colmo The final weekend started with a stage over Gavia and Mortirolo and a finish on Monte Colmo. Good old Daniel Martin showed his infamous final km legs ridding himself of Chérel near the red kite.
Guerreiro had his work chasing Formolo going up the last climb. Stage 21 | 201 kms | Bergamo › Brescia No pan flat run into a regional or major city to conclude a Grand Tour this time; the ultimate stage featured no less than five ascents of the brutal 2nd cat Monte Maddalena just outside of Brescia.
Two laps in, Guerreiro got involved in a major crash that would cost both Nibali and Arredondo their top 10 spot in the final GC. Ruben and Latour made in back in time for the final climb.
Guerreiro wanted to follow first knowing that he had used up energy earlier on. He let Kudus and Aru go and when Formolo finally went, he found himself boxed in by two Bahrain riders. It was far too late to do something back when he could eventually pass 'em. In the end, Davide Formolo makes it two overall wins in a row, this time without winning a stage though. The high amount of TT kilometers and a crash of his only remaining GC rival on the final day gave him the edge this year.
Second Grand Tour overall podium finish for Ruben, yet this time he couldn't finish on the highest step.

Time for some of the spring classics' riders to get back action. Barbero didn't have the best form coming here and it showed on all stages. He couldn't finish off a superb leadout on day one and couldn't launch properly the day after. Cimolai won both stages.
The hillier course of the third stage invited many to attack Cimolai's lead, but both Ochoa and Barbero overplayed their hand by attacking too early on. The latter couldn't follow the group from which young Dane Kim Milton Helveg secured the overall win and had to settle for GC 7th.

We have a habit of not doing well at this race and the 2021 edition was no exception. Chávarri and MartÃnez led our team but our sprinter saw Meseck take the first stage from the break while he came 8th. He did better on day two with a 6th place and then he didn't as he fractured his tibia and the stage didn't have anyone come in 6th.
We then came dead-last in the team time trial, forcing Eder to hit the mountains with a significant setback already. His post Giro legs eventually felt relatively good whereas our team lost several more riders due to illness. Our tiny Basque finished around 10th in every mountain stage and improved our best ever GC result here from 16th to 13th.
Fellow Spaniard Juan Andrés upset everyone with very strong performances on the climbs and topped off this week with two stage wins and two jerseys. Kelderman, winner of four Grand Tours and the usual favourite for the upcoming TDF, certainly has some work to do in the next few weeks.

Guerreiro rode his first race since the Giro to get some rhythm peaking in the upcoming TDF. When things mattered most, during the queen stage, he couldn't fight for the win after narrowly avoiding a crash. Jairo Noria pulled an overall podium out of the fire by coming third on the final stage, which was won from the breakaway.

If we had a silent race at the Dauphiné, this Tour de Suisse was dead silent. The GC contenders' teams use literally every tougher stretch of the route to make this a very hard race, which translates in all but one stages getting a well-known winner. We never made the headlines because Colla couldn't outclimb home rider Gerardo Hänzi on the final day.
Simon Yates put quite some time into his rivals on the long time trial and could allow Alaphilippe to chew away at his lead on the final mountain stages. It's the perfect warm up result ahead of the Brit's shot at the TDF win.

Agree, but we couldn't do more than this given how hard this race was.
