Cant be too upset with 11th at RvV. 7th at Basque Country isn't bad either. Some big names ahead (apart from the Hungarian) and the gaps look huge. Usually when I race it the gaps are quite small for some reason.
Spoiler I think stage 2's profile might be wrong. Ripley wrote:
Wow, the Basque Tour was brutal. No chance in hell to compete with the Yates twins and Alaphilippe.
Fixed the stage 2 profile .
Eleventh was definitely the best result possible and one we should be very happy with, seeing how I have never managed to finish higher than 10th in all these years. And Cortes doesn't have the stats Lature had when he came in 10th. Hopefully we will manage to resign Cerezo and him in July.
On Itzulia: the top tier climbers and punchers are just too unevenly spread over the different teams, allowing the strong ones to lit up the races whenever and wherever they see fit. Bad legs on day one just ruined Verona's top 5 ambitions...
Kenyeres could already be a bigger name if he rode for a different team btw. With maxed out stats he could be like Alaphilippe with a less fierce acceleration.
FYI: see total number of wages in the spoiler below. I also just saw I totally messed up the AI teams in terms of the number of riders they have.
FYI 2: updated the first post with an overview of our top result for each of the current WT races.

Many dreamed of more today due to the absence of Lutsenko and Benoot - the two latest winners - and with the world's best cobbler Senechal coming back from injury.
Our Andrónico Mendigain joined the break of the day and was the first come out of the Forest of Arenberg. At that point only a few domestiques, including a certain Croatian champion, had been dropped from the bunch. Some of the favourites though, like Kristoff and Demare, had been involved in a crash earlier.
Sadly from there, all cameras went dark. We learned through the race radio that the break was caught with around 55 kilometers to go. Cerezo and Cortes were still racing with the front group.
Deceuninck kept setting the pace afterwards and saw team leader Senechal attack three times on a longer asphalt stretch. The group was thinned but no rider got away there.
Spengler played his card on Carrefour de l'Arbre, towing along Senechal and Geraint Thomas. Cortes and Cerezo were happy to see how a very strong Sport Vlaanderen team closed the gap.
Senechal used a brief moment of hesitation close to the velodrome to get away from the rest and secure his biggest win so far on his first race day in weeks. The ecstatic French saw Van Keirsbulck and Sagan round out the podium. Cortes didn't have the legs to keep up near the end, Cerezo came 13th in the sprint of the chasing group.

Bilbao tried to reel in the escapees on the final lap but saw his attack countered by Suaza and Calmejane. They passed and dropped him and the breakaway riders to sprint for the win.
Suaza got the better of home rider Calmejane and became the third Colombian winner in four editions. Bilbao and Barbero both sprinted to a top 10 finish.

It was a pretty dull race until we tried to stir things up on the infamous, steep Keutenberg, about 70 kilometers from the line. A group with contenders such as Mühlberger, van der Poel, M.A. López was distanced due to the high pace set by Sagasta.
The breakaway's lead kept shrinking on the local Cauberg circuit until Raul Carretto was the last to crack on the final lap. Verona paid for an earlier acceleration when he only just failed follow a new lead group with Alaphilippe, TDU winner Galtier, Arredondo and Adam Yates.
Yates cracked on the final Cauberg ascent but the other three could sprint for the win. Alaphilippe won a close sprint to add a fourth victory to his Gold Race tally.
Verona, Ochoa and Mendigain all finished in the fourth group but only the former made the top 10.

This year's edition had an interesting route with several cimbs inside the last ten kilometers. Vanbilsen left the other three breakaway riders behind with around 20 kilometers to go.
Once Vanbilsen had been caught, the stronger teams tried to decimate the pack. As a result, the front riders hit the final Mûr de Huy ascent with a gap between each of them: Van Gestel first, Adam Yates next, van der Poel and Alaphilippe still ahead of Verona and the bunch.
Van Gestel maintained a more than steady pace, forcing Adam Yates to dig deep in order to bridge. After he had, Van Gestel kicked away again to win the race. Adam saw his brother complete the podium whereas Verona crossed the line in 6th.

A still large pack at the foot of La Redoute, a slightly less vast one at the foot of La Rôche aux Faucons. Before that team leaders Verona and Ochoa had both suffered a crash. Only the Spaniard made the cut and hit the Faucons climb with the first group of 17.
It didn't come as a surprise that the group was ripped apart on Faucons. Alaphilippe reduced the leading group from six to three himself on the Côte de Saint-Nicolas. Van Gestel and Adam Yates had to give their absolute best just to keep up but they did.
Behind them a gap of minutes was opened up. The group with Verona swept up Calmejane and Galtier in the battle for seventh.
Alaphilippe's companions were too cooked to even stand on the pedals in the final sprint and definitely wouldn't keep the latest Lombardia victor from winning his second Monument.
Verona smartly sat up in the descent before the final climb and managed to win the sprint for the 7th place.

Very consistent performances by Verona. Maybe Ruralvia should hire Alaphilippe, too!

1. | 7.5km | 2. | 172km | 3. | 184km | 4. | 174km | 5. | 175km | 6. | 20km |
| J. Caicedo | | R. Guerreiro | | Seb. Henao | | I. Izagirre | | M. Martínez | | D. Ochoa | | F. Palmero | | F. Zurlo |
---------------
Stage 1 | 7.5 km MTT 1 | | Lawson Craddock | BORA - hansgrohe | 13'09" | 2 | | Wilco Kelderman | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 3 | | Shani Odhiambo | NTT Pro Cycling Team | + 9" | 4 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | + 10" | 5 | | Abel Kenyeres | Bahrain - McLaren | + 13" | | ----- | | | | 12 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 33" |
Team captain Guerreiro arrived in Switzerland with slightly reduced freshness, which definitely showed in the opening time trial as he lost 48" to the winner. Craddock became the first race leader after his first win of the season.
Stage 2 | 172.4 kms 1 | | Toms Skujins | Trek - Segafredo | 3h53'16" | 2 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 3 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 4 | | Silvan Dillier | AG2R Citroën Team | s.t. | 5 | | Elia Favilli | EF Education First Pro Team | s.t. |
Martínez struggled and eventually failed to keep up with the bunch on day two. The sprinters that did missed out on the win too as Toms Skujins won the stage from the break of the day. It's the biggest win of his career so far.
Stage 3 | 172.4 kms 1 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 4h30'47" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Robert Kiserlovski | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 5 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. |
Guerreiro followed an attack on the last climb but things calmed down after his group was caught. At least until Izagirre tore the reduced pack apart, allowing Ochoa to win the third stage. That is three WT stage wins with us now for him. This must be a big boost after a long injury that cost him several months.
Stage 4 | 174 kms 1 | | Romain Bardet | AG2R Citroën Team | 3h55'48" | 2 | | Michael Matthews | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 3 | | Simon Yates | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 4 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 5 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage four proved to be too tough for Martínez too. Bardet saw a strong attack on the last KoM climb rewarded with the stage win and a few bonus seconds.
Stage 5 | 175.9 kms 1 | | Simon Yates | INEOS Grenadiers | 4h53'49" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 2'48" | 3 | | Calvin Beneke | Team DSM | + 3'25" | 4 | | Romain Bardet | AG2R Citroën Team | + 3'48" | 5 | | Wout Poels | Team DSM | s.t. |
Caicedo joined a breakaway of 13 and took it easy on the first climb. Winning the two next cat.1 sprints made him take the lead in the mountain classification.
Simon Yates caught up swiftly on the ultimate climb and would go on to bag the stage win by a huge gap. Guerreiro managed to shake everyone near the top and moved to GC 2nd.
Stage 6 | 20.2 km ITT 1 | | Tejay Van Garderen | Bahrain - McLaren | 25'16" | 2 | | Miles Scotson | Team BikeExchange | + 9" | 3 | | Lukas Meiler | Israel Start Up Nation | + 23" | 4 | | Simon Yates | INEOS Grenadiers | + 32" | 5 | | Michał Kwiatkowski | Bahrain - McLaren | + 33" | | ----- | | | | 54 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'47" |
The final time trial suited Ruben enough on paper to secure his second place. Sadly he was blessed with abysmal legs and lost around a minute on his rivals, dropping from second to seventh. Simon Yates easily kept his overall win by finishing in the stage top 5.
Tour de Romandie 2021 Final overall standings 1 | | Simon Yates | INEOS Grenadiers | 17h52'59" | 2 | | Tejay Van Garderen | Bahrain - McLaren | + 3'12" | 3 | | Wilco Kelderman | Team Jumbo-Visma | + 3'27" | 4 | | Lawson Craddock | BORA - hansgrohe | + 3'45" | 5 | | Romain Bardet | AG2R Citroën Team | + 3'57" | 6 | | Thibaut Pinot | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 4'16" | 7 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 4'17" | 8 | | Ilnur Zakarin | Astana Pro Team | + 4'20" | 9 | | Wout Poels | Team DSM | + 5'22" | 10 | | Bob Jungels | BORA - hansgrohe | + 6'45" |

197.9 kms | Eschborn › Frankfurt
Eschborn-Frankfurt was raced for the first time in a couple years. Its comeback edition even made the final list of World Tour events. It didn't really make for an exciting race though and everythign would come down to a mass sprint in the streets of Frankfurt. Cerezo led Barbero to the very front of the pack.
Our team captain looked like he wouldn't have much left for the actual sprint and that also turned out to be the truth. While he was happy to make the top 10, it was almost-home rider Marco König who won after a very close sprint.

Vuelta a Asturias (2.1) Spain, 3 stages

Three more stages left before this year's Grande Partenza in Palermo. Today Giro sprinter Martínez already showed his good legs by making it over both climbs. Having to swing around some riders kept him from finishing higher than in sixth.
Stage 2 | 90.2 kms 1 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 1h49'14" | 2 | | Diego Ochoa | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Nick Van Der Lijke | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 5 | | Daniele Ratto | Israel Start Up Nation | s.t. |
A mass crash took out a big chunk of the pack on day two. Enough of us stayed on the bike to set up a train for Manuel in the last kilometers. A short false flat stretch was enough to drop the rest. Second win this season for the Uruguayan.
Stage 3 | 168.6 kms Chávarri climbed quite well on Alto del Naranco, yet he could not keep up with Bailly and Arredondo. The former kicked away to the stage and overall win, Eder eventually had to settle for fourth. 1 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | 4h06'21" | 2 | | Renaud Bailly | Bahrain - McLaren | + 15" | 3 | | Bernardo Suaza | Movistar Team | + 44" | 4 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 55" | 5 | | Sindre Lunke | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. |

Ooh, Ruben is the top favourite, though Bahrain is dangerous with Landa and Formolo! Looks like a tough route this year, good luck!

Thank you, honestly can't recall the last time one of my riders started as a top favourite!
The route looks almost tailor-made with the time trialing being so important. Those able to outclimb him aren't even close to his time trial abilities, especially Landa (who's podiumed in the last four editions without winning the GC), Kudus and Aru. Curious to see how Bahrain will handle thing with both Formolo and Landa in the lineup.

GIRO D'ITALIA [1/5]
Stage 1 | 19.7 kms | Palermo TTT As was too be expected with the lineup we sent to Sicily for La Grande Partenza, our team finished about halfway in the stage top ten. Qhubeka ASSOS lived up to its status as top favourites and saw Gerai Flower move into the maglia rosa. Team leader Merhawi Kudus gained around a minute on Aru, Formolo and Landa. 1 | | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | 21'56" | 2 | | Team BikeExchange | + 15" | 3 | | Groupama - FDJ | + 21" | 4 | | EF Education - NIPPO | s.t. | 5 | | BORA - hansgrohe | + 32" | 6 | | Movistar Team | s.t. | 7 | | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 8 | | Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec | + 43" | 9 | | Bahrain Victorious | + 52" | 10 | | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. |
Stage 2 | 182.8 kms | Cefalù › Messina Things almost split on the seemingly meaningless climb close to the line but the group with Ruben couldn't stay clear. Martinez failed to keep Bonifazio's wheel and probably wouldn't have beaten him in the sprint anyway judging by the gap. Boris Vallée crossed the line in seventh spot and took Gerai Flower's pink jersey. 1 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain Victorious | 3h44'22" | 2 | | Erik Baska | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Fernando Gaviria | Team DSM | s.t. | 4 | | Logan Owen | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 5 | | Sonny Colbrelli | Movistar Team | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 13 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 3 | 223.5 kms | Reggio Calabria › Cosenza A test in the mountains awaited the pack after a short transfer to the mainland. Landa and Aru saw their long range attack strand yet the former seemed swift to follow Dunbar on Spezzano della Silla.
Over the top, however, Landa wasn't part of a 9-man group of mostly outsiders for the GC and neither were Aru and Guerreiro. On this rough day, Ruben could not be more relieved crossing the line with the second group. Latour sprinted to his first WT win and did so minutes ahead of Aru, the main loser of the third day. Qhubeka kept the pink jersey, now on the shoulders of designated leader Kudus. 1 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | 5h45'07" | 2 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | s.t. | 3 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | s.t. | 4 | | Kenny Elissonde | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | s.t. | 5 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 30 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'24" | | ----- | | | | 43 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 4'32" |
Stage 4 | 191.4 kms | Corigliano Calabro › Grassano Stage four didn't appear as tough on paper yet surely damage could be dealt on the double ascent of Muro di Grassano.
Fabio Aru felt like setting things straight after yesterday's disaster and dropped everyone including Guerreiro, who was the only one that almost followed. Our leader kept his focus and rode up the last climb like a madman with just Morton with him. Not enough to catch Aru but Ruben surely made a giant leap GC-wise. He breached the GC top five and saw Robert Power grab the pink jersey for now. 1 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | 4h44'19" | 2 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | + 14" | 3 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 34" | 5 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | + 1'01" | | ----- | | | | 11 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | + 1'24" |
Stage 5 | 163.6 kms | Matera › Manfredonia The peloton was delighted to let a group of four go early on the easy fifth stage. The inevitable mass sprint ended in a close win for Valléé ahead of Bonifazio and Gaviria. Manuel launched a bit too soon and eventually crossed the line in 8th. 1 | | Boris Vallée | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | 3h18'31" | 2 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 3 | | Fernando Gaviria | Team DSM | s.t. | 4 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education First Pro Team | s.t. | 5 | | Sonny Colbrelli | Movistar Team | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Manuel Martinez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Giro d'Italia 2021 GC after stage 5 1 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | 17h55'31" | 2 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 7" | 3 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 4 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | + 35" | 5 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 50" | 6 | | Eddie Dunbar | Team DSM | + 1'00" | 7 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | + 1'08" | 8 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 1'34" | 9 | | Rodrigo Contreras | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'41" | 10 | | Hugh Carthy | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 2'04" |

Tricky stages, Ruben did well so far. Next highlight the Blockhaus, we'll see just how well everybody's climbing.

Very odd first week indeed with few time to warm up the engines. I agree Guerreiro did well by taking back most of the time he lost on day three already.
Next stages will be up soon!

Giro d'Italia (2.GT) [2/5]
Stage 6 | 183.7 kms | Foggia › Napoli A breakaway group of four remained at large until after the only difficulty of the day, Monte Taburno. The pack gave the many sprinters and GC 9th Contreras a scare by climbing unexpectedly fast, but eventually they all came back together.
The moment at which the four were caught caused a short hesitation. Chávarri, Izagirre and Caicedo set up a train for Martinez and noticed that most of the sprinters were tired or sat too far back. They kept expecting another sprint train to catch up and swamp them. It wouldn't happen, and Manuel wrote history for Uruguay as a cycling nation by landing this milestone stage win. 1 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 4h18'04" | 2 | | Boris Vallée | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | s.t. | 3 | | Mark Cavendish | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. | 4 | | Eddie Dunbar | Team DSM | s.t. | 5 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | s.t. |
Stage 7 | 192.2 kms | Gaeta › Roma Cobblestones are a rare sight in Giro stages, and in hindsight they could've been left out this year too. The GC contenders' teams weren't looking to take any risk as Mats Boeve beat fellow Dutchman Wesley Kreder to win the stage from the breakaway. 1 | | Mats Boeve | Team Jumbo-Visma | 4h17'24" | 2 | | Wesley Kreder | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Victor Tournieroux | Groupama - FDJ | + 1'13" | 4 | | Moreno Moser | INEOS Grenadiers | + 1'38" | 5 | | Niccolo Bonifazio | Bahrain Victorious | + 4'40" |
Stage 8 | 200.8 kms | Tivoli › Blockhaus The peloton let a big breakaway go on the Blockhaus. More than 10 riders could only watch how Hillen rode away on the climb and secured back to back stage wins for Jumbo - Visma.
Many GC men didn't seem to have much left after seven long days so far but not so for Formolo, who only saw teammate Landa catch up after his acceleration. Aru did best to finish 1'45" behind them, Ruben and Kudus finished two minutes behind. Power lost about six mins to them and had Formolo take his pink jersey. 1 | | Foeke Hillen | Team Jumbo-Visma | 5h20'38" | 2 | | Mariano Franchini | Astana - Premier Tech | + 3'18" | 3 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | + 6'38" | 4 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | s.t. | 5 | | Toms Skujins | Trek - Segafredo | + 8'08" | 6 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 8'24" | 7 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 8'46" |
Stage 9 | 23.1 kms | Chieti › Pescara (ITT) Last up before the first rest day was the first of three individual time trials. Van Gompel rode the race of his life to beat riders like Cameron Meyer, Campenaerts and Mullen.
Ruben needs a bumpier course to thrive but still had a decent time at the line. Among GC riders, just maglia rosa Formolo and Latour were faster, making for a very close overall. Nine days in, Formolo looks quite good to succeed himself as Giro d'Italia winner. 1 | | Mathias Van Gompel | Trek - Segafredo | 28'40" | 2 | | Cameron Meyer | Team BikeExchange | + 13" | 3 | | Geoffrey Curran | EF Education - NIPPO | + 14" | 4 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | + 23" | 5 | | Mattia Frapporti | Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec | + 29" | | ----- | | | | 7 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | + 33" | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 34" |
Giro d'Italia 2021 GC after stage 9 1 | | Davide Formolo | Bahrain Victorious | 32h33'42" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'25" | 3 | | Pierre-Roger Latour | BORA - hansgrohe | + 1'26" | 4 | | Lachlan Morton | INEOS Grenadiers | + 1'34" | 5 | | Merhawi Kudus | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 1'55" | 6 | | Mikel Landa | Bahrain Victorious | + 2'53" | 7 | | Hugh Carthy | Team Qhubeka ASSOS | + 4'01" | 8 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 4'43" | 9 | | Julian Arredondo | Movistar Team | s.t. | 10 | | Robert Power | Team BikeExchange | + 4'58" |

Congrats to Manuel Martinez on the stage win! Ruben outclassed by the Bahraini duo on the Blockhaus, though. Right now it seems that defending the spot on the podium will be tough enough. But we've still got a long way to go.
