May 2:Tour de Romandie – Stage 1 | Fribourg > La Chaux-de-Fond – 158 km
The 1st stage of this tour is quite hilly and we could expect to see a rather small peloton settling this stage between them in a bunch sprint. There’s a lot of tough small climbs throughout the day and we could see some punchy riders have a go on the last climb La Tourne, which tops about 20 km from the finishing line. All in all, Rabobank should be able to keep it all together and protect Dekker’s lead.
The early breakaway formed right from the outset from Fribourg, where yesterday’s prologue was ridden. A total of nine riders got away, but three of them were left chasing the whole day. In the 6-man front group the riders were Schwager (MRM), Grabsch (TMO), Mertens (PRL), Kiryienka (TCS), Spezialetti (LIQ) and Turpin (A2R). Behind them Priamo (PAN) and Russ (GST) were chasing, while Poilvet (C.A) was even further behind.
Cooperation lacked in the early breakaway, meaning the group got shattered.
None of the chasers ever caught up so it was these 6 riders, that Rabobank had to focus on. With 110 km to go, the lead was already 7’30” on the pack, but from this point Rabobank upped the pace and began reeling them steadily in.
With 85 to go as the pack hit one of the tougher climbs, the Col du Mont-Crosin, the pack split up with only 75 riders able to stay in the front half. We lost Haedo on the climb, but besides that we had all our guys in the front group. On the climb Kiriyenka and Mertens decided to solo away from the breakaway group and they also got away and stayed away. At least from the other breakaway riders.
As the pack, lead by Rabobank hit the last but final climb, the two guys were reeled in again and they were back on level terms.
On the final climb, La Tourne, things got interesting as Cunego decided to take off about 2 km from the summit. No one was bothered following him as we thought he would drop back after crossing the top. But he didn’t exactly do that.
Cunego turned out incredibly strong on the La Tourne as he soloed away from the pack, but could he hold off its comeback?
In an unbelievable effort Cunego managed to hold off the pack, who only trailed by 20 seconds at the top, and eventhough we were chasing with everything we had, Cunego just increased his gap on the last 15 flat kilometres as he managed to win the stage by one minute ahead of a 70-man big pack. So Dekker would lose his jersey to Cunego today, but besides that there are no changes in the top ten of the GC. Kurt-Asle did pretty good finishing 4th on stage as he was 3rd in the bunch sprint.
Damiano Cunego took an amazing victory as he is looking terrifying just 10 days before the Giro commences.
Andy Schleck got through without any problems and he’s beginning to look very good as his form is really increasing right now.

May 3:Tour de Romandie – Stage 2 | La Chaux-de-Fond > Lucens – 169 km
Another stage very similar to yesterday’s as it’s quite hilly throughout the day and with about 30 km to go, there’s a hill that see a few riders attacking, like Cunego did yesterday. But as this hill isn’t anywhere near the other on yesterday’s stage toughnesswise, I think we’ll see a rather large group sprinting for the win today.
As always, an early breakaway got away, this time containing 7 riders, who were Davis (DSC), Mertens (PRL), Grabsch (TMO), Poitschke (MRM), Hartmann (COF), Capecchi (LIQ) and Galparsoro (EUS).
Lampre had their work cut out as all they had to do was to control the breaks, in order to defend Damiano Cunego’s overall lead.
The gap topped at around 6 minutes with 75 km left to race. It turner out a rather dull day as everything that happened was a break going clear and the pack reeling it back in. With 50 km to go, the leading group was down to six riders as Cofidis’ Hartmann was dropped on one of the many small hills, that punctuated today’s course. At this point their lead had decreased to just 3 minutes.
While Lampre kept a monotenous pace, Andy could “sit back” and enjoy the beautiful swiss scenery on today’s stage.
With 30 km to go, the pack hit the final climb, La Surpierre. It’s no more than 3 km long, so no one tried anything here. Just a few kilometres after reaching the top, the breakaway was caught and the remaining riders in the pack prepared themselves for the bunch sprint. The pack was down to 90 riders after the climb and the dropped riders were not gonna make it back in time.
Kurt-Asle had done very well on yesterday’s stage and as he is a very good finisher, we relied on him to bring home a good result for us. Guys like Valverde, Schumacher and McGee were also present and they should also be considered favourites as the main sprinters had been dropped on La Surpierre.
So Kurt found Schumacher’s wheel and hoped the german would lead him out in perfect conditions. On the final kilometre Cunego was at the front of the pack as he was also looking to participate in the sprint. Kurt and Schumacher was a bit behind Valverde and McGee, but as the sprint began they quickly gained on them and Schumacher was really strong.
He was too strong actually. Because as Schumacher with Arvesen on his wheel had passed the entire field of semi-sprinters, Arvesen didn’t have enough left to overtake the German, meaning that Schumacher could sprint to victory and add another win to his resume. Arvesen finished second and we finished with all our guys excluding Haedo and Chris Sørensen in the main group. Schumacher would climb to 2nd in the GC because of his win, while Arvesen moved to 4th and Cunego gained some more time after finishing 3rd on the stage.
Gerolsteiner is having a stormer lately as they are bundling up wins in almost every race they go to.

Three guys in top ten and Schleck and Vandevelde right outside makes for a very succesful tour for us so far. Tomorrow’s stage will be interesting as we have a hill top finish. Maybe Andy could do something there.

Thanks , Even though I really like Tour of Romandy, I'm not putting so much effort into the details as I really would like to get underway in the Giro.
I'm glad I can see "that name" on 9th place .
Nice second after Schumacher......he made a win in his "Giro 2006 style", so that means he will win one time more.
May 4:Tour de Romandie – Stage 3 | Moudon > Charmey-Gruyère – 164 km
Today we have an interesting uphill finish. Andy is really coming along even though he’s some way off his peak yet, but we’ve planned something for the finish today.
We decided to take part in the early break today, and so we sent off neo-pro Chris Anker Sørensen who joined up with Visconti (QSI) and Zberg (GST), two rather experienced guys. After about 35 kilometres, they had 6 minutes on the pack, but at this point, Chris had a puncture and as he lost more than a minute on the two others, as we had some problems changing his wheel, he decided to fall back to the pack instead of exhausting himself by begin chasing the two others.
The pack let Chris Anker ride away with Zberg of Gerolsteiner and Visconti of Quickstep.
Chris had a very unlucky puncture at a very critical point, meaning that he couldn’t chase his breakaway companions down again.
But it didn’t matter as the breakaway wouldn’t make it anyway. Lampre began upping the pace with 90 km to go as the gap had grown to about 10 minutes. Two guys can’t do much against an entire peloton, so just 50 km later the gap was cut to just 2 minutes. 20 kilometres later it was all over as the pack was back on level terms with the duo yet again.
From now on it was all about the finale. With 10 kilometres to go, we sent some of our guys, including Andy to the front of the pack, before we would hit the about 5 km hill, on the top of which the finishing line is.
As we hit the hill, Kurt-Asle took the lead and set a deadly pace for the first 2 kilometres, which resulted in only 112 riders finishing in the pack. With 3 kilometres to go Kurt-Asle fell back together with the rest of our guys at the front, besides Andy who took and accelerated away from the pack, with an irresistible attack. Cunego, Schumacher, Dekker, Kashechkin etc. Apparently didn’t know about how hard the finish was because they stayed in the back of the pack when Andy took off. But as they found out he had taken off, they quickly drove forward to the front.
Andy was very strong as he easily opened a gap between him and the pack as he rode to win the stage.
But as they came to the front, Andy was already gone. Rabobank and Lampre had a few guys in the front of the pack who chased very hard and they also closed in a bit on Andy. But as he crossed the Flame Rouge, he had 15 seconds on the pack and he was gonna make it. On the home stretch the pack wasn’t trailing by much, so Andy started sprinting to secure the win. And he held them off amazingly and took the stage ahead of Theo Eltink, who just managed to close the pack on the final metres, meaning that Andy would only gain the time he took on the line.
Andy Schleck took the entire pack by surprise as he bursted off on the final climb, to take his second win of the season and move to 3rd in the GC.
Team work really paid off today as Andy took a great win here. We’ve already gained a lot more from this tour than we’d ever imagined we would. We’ve been in the top ten on all the stages so far and now we have four riders in the top ten in the GC.

Cunego leads the Points Competition and Mertens leads the King of the Moutains Competition.
A great stage win by Andy must really boost his confidence not only ahead of the Giro but also tomorrow’s crucial mountain stage. It’s going to be a great stage, which ends at the top of 16 km long mountain, so it’s going to be very interesting to see how Andy does there. A top ten in the GC looks very realistic now.
May 5:Tour de Romandie – Stage 4 | Charmey-Gruyère > Morgins – 156 km
The crucial mountain stage. If one of the favourites can get to the finish in Morgins alone, then he could win the tour right here on this stage. Andy is of course our guy today and his most important helpers will be Vandevelde, Zabriskie and Gustov. So it’s also a big test for these three guys as they are also going to be helping Andy in the Giro, which begins next weekend.
On the last 60 km of this stage there are two incredibly tough 1st category climbs. The first that begins with 60 km to go has an average slope of 5% over 16,5 km. While the next, on which the finish line also is, has a gradient of 6,3% over 16 km. So we are in for a very exciting day.
Andy rode today’s stage in the white young riders jersey as Cunego was wearing yellow and Schumacher wore green.
Our danish neo-pro Chris Anker, who had a puncture while he was in a breakaway yesterday, tried to get away again today on the first small mountain on the profile. He got a gap and together with nine others he formed the early breakaway. These riders were, Zberg (GST), Clement (BTL), Horrach (GCE), Poilvet (C.A), Di Gregorio (FDJ), Kiriyenka (TCS), Khatuntsev (UNI), Perez Moreno (EUS) and Sladkov (AST).
Chris Anker was looking to gather some points for the King of the Mountains Competition as he created the early breakaway by taking off from the pack.
After about 50 km, with 105 to go, the breakaway had a lead of 4’20” on the pack, that were being controlled by Lampre.
With 95 km to go, the break hit another small mountain. After that there would be a long descent, then a small flat part and then they would hit the first 1st category climb. On this small mountain, Di Gregorio and Zberg moved off the front of the break and rode away from the 8 others. At the bottom of the descent with 70 km left, they had 24 seconds on the chasing group, where Chris Anker was and 7 minutes on the pack, where the pace was being upped.
Lampre’s Tadej Valjavec set a very hard pace on this 1st category climb and the top the pack was cut to just 30 riders, in which we had Andy, who was feeling pretty good, Vandevelde and Zabriskie. Di Gregorio had attacked on the climb, meaning that he was the first to cross, then a bit later came Zberg followed by the 8 chasers. After them race leader Cunego crossed as he had attacked on the final part of the climb and gotten clear.
After the descent the riders hit a flat part of about 10 km before the final climb to the finishing line. Here Cunego joined up with the 8-man group and he immediately moved to the front to chase down Zberg and Di Gregorio. It seemed suicidal. He did reel in Di Gregorio just before the final 16 kilometres of mountain, but from that point, he was more or less done for today.
The favourites attacked right from the bottom. Kashechkin, Dekker, Valverde, Gomez Marchante all got away and passed Cunego. Schleck hesitated a bit to get a feel of his legs in the mountain but then he took off and he also quickly got past Cunego and he managed to join up with Gomez Marchante and Valverde, who were chasing Kashechkin, who had soloed away.
Cunego tried a headless effort, while Andy remained cool and waited until the final climb to take off from the pack.
Kashechkin rode solo ahead of a group with Andy, Valverde and Marchante who had Dekker trailing them.
It was really great to see Andy riding with such big climbers as Marchante and Valverde. That really confirmed what we’ve known about this kid. Meanwhile, Kashechkin was just powering away and no one was gonna catch him. With 1 km to go, he lead the trio by 2 minutes, while Dekker was trailing Andy’s group by about 20 seconds, while Cunego and Sandy Casar was about another 20 seconds down the climb.
Kashechkin also did claim the stage win and Andy decided on the last two kilometres that Valverde and Marchante wasn’t going fast enough as he attacked and stayed ahead of them all the way to the finishing line to take 2nd place. An inspiring effort by Schleck. Dekker finished in 5th and Cunego took 6th and managed to stay on the podium as he’s still 2nd in the GC, 8 seconds ahead of Schleck.
Andrey Kashechkin rode amazingly on the last mountain to win the leader’s jersey and look a certain GC winner ahead of tomorrow’s time trial in Lausanne.
