This year's Giro starts with a 7km flat time - trial.
The World TT Champion, Geraint Thomas finished on the overall podium last year, but this year he hasn't look as strong and it's hard to believe he will be able to repeat last year's performance. Not a good start today for him as he is 5 seconds slower than Jumbo's Danny Van Poppel, who set the early reference time
One of those who was able to beat Van Poppel's time was his team - mate, Laurens De Plus who finished the stage in 7 minutes and 50 seconds. A very good time, which might be well enough for the stage win!
A good show of good De Plus' time was was reflected by the fact that Primoz Roglic, one of the day's favorites failed to beat it, coming 5 seconds short
The same could not be said for Tom Dumoulin though. The Sunweb rider kicks off his Giro right from where he left off last year - in the pink jersey. Dumoulin was 3 seconds faster than De Plus to grab the stage win from the Belgian rider

We continue the racing in Italy with a hilly stage. With the breakaway caught before we begin the 3 categorized climbs of the day, it was time for the big guns to show their cards.
Four riders went clear on the penultimate climb: Ulissi, Vanendert, De Plus and Schachmann. With De Plus there, Dumoulin sensed the danger for the pink jersey and was quick to join the move on the downhill, but soon so did the rest of the pack.
The same riders were again among those that took part in the fight for the stage win, with Ulissi eventually coming out on top of Dumoulin and De Plus, with the Dutchman increasing his lead in the general classification due to the bonus seconds
Only 19 riders finished in the front group today, which means some GC favorites have already lost even more time to Dumoulin, coming in groups at 40 seconds or even one minute. Most of Mitchelton's GC riders was caught back (Quintana wasn't, but Nibali was), as well as Buchmann, Thomas, Carapaz, A. Yates, Uran and Vincent.

So pity that you couldn't take the pink jersey on day one. But De plus is showing some good form.

Yeah, he should be quite good. In the first week at least. After that, I don't think he'll be able to carry it for too long given he's been peaking since the Ardennes

Not enough points in today's stage for any of the escapees to put Uliss's blue jersey in danger. We have another uphill finish today, but it's definitely easier than what we had yesterday so the strongest sprinters should be able to survive it.
As soon as the race reached the final climb, Roosen and De Plus moved to the front of the pack to control things for Danny Van Poppel, who definitely likes today's finish
After a brilliant work done by his team-mates, especially De Plus, Van Poppel was in clear lead in the last corner of the stage and looked set for the stage win
A very fast finish from Simon Yates in the closing meters, but it was too late to stop Van Poppel from taking his first win in Giro d'Italia! It's been a fantastic season for Van Poppel so far and now he has a Grand Tour stage win to add to it
Again splits were made in the pack. Thomas, Carapaz, Soler, A. Yates and Vincent were once again caught on the wrong side of things. Having lost about 2 minutes after only 3 stages is definitely not good news for them.

First mountain stage of Il Giro. It won't tell us who will win the race, but it will definitely tell us who had got their preparation for the race wrong and we can right off.
A large breakaway today but with only Frank and Cataldo able to climb up the high mountains, it was clear today is the day for the GC men.
The first move in the favorites group was made quite early, with about 10km left to ride. And it was a classic Lopez move. It was too early for a winning move and he was brought back
Next it was Ciccone who tried his luck, but this would prove not to be the winning move either. Still, by the time he was caught by the main group, only 6 riders were left there: Dumoulin, S. Yates, Lopez, Quintana, Roglic and Oomen.
They stay together until the last kilometer when Lopez accelerated to take the stage win. And it was quite an acceleration as only Dumoulin was able to follow, who successfully defended the pink jersey for now.
Lopez looked very strong today but Dumoulin had a proper response. Will that be the case for other mountains stages as well? We'll see but it sure like it will be a great battle between the two for the pink. Roglic lost a bit of time in the end, but with those around him having a rather weak time - trial, if he can keep up like this a podium is definitely on the books.

First stage really designed for sprinters in this year's Giro and there was no way the sprinters team were going to let the opportunity slip through their fingers.
Under the last kilometer battle we had a very tight situation with 3 trains pretty much at the same level. Kristoff was leading out Gaviria, Roosen was doing the same for Van Poppel, while Quick Step seem to have switched roles as it's Viviani who is working for Hodeg and not the other way around
Neither Hodeg nor Gaviria are strong enough to fight for the win today though. Bennett and Kittel flew from Gaviria's wheel to take the battle to Van Poppel. Kittel was a little bit too far, but Bennett had an amazing sprint and it was a really really close one between him and Van Poppel. But it's the Irishman who takes the win!

A hilly profile in the first part of the race, but the end surely will give the sprinters some ideas. It was not the case though as Jumbo seemed to be only team interested in really chasing after the breakaway today and as a result the group of four escapees made it all the way to the finish line.
The Eritrean Champion made the best out of his fellow escapees in the last kilometers to enjoy a fantastic solo win. A real shame for Jumbo that they weren't able to catch the breakaway though as Van Poppel managed to win the sprint in the pack.

Good start of the Giro, Van Poppel deserved his first ever Grand Tour win! Too bad Bennett was a bit faster on stage 5.

Dumoulin seems unbeatable at the moment, but surely a podium is a possibility for Roglic

Well, I've caught up now! Van Poppel is amazing right now. He's winning practically everything hes entered. Also a shame that the team couldnt keep up the wins at the major classics, but Alaph so close to a triple like he did in my story. Atleast Deceuninck still took the triple

A hilly circuit that was raced in an insane pace in today's Giro stage, giving the breakaway no chance. It wasn't another stage opportunity for Kudus but he gain enough KoM points to add to those form the previous stage to take the jersey from Dumoulin.
On the last uphill section of the day, five riders went clear off the pack and managed to not only keep their gap on the downhill, but increase it as well. The attackers were Sosa, De Plus, Roglic, Quintana and Dumoulin.
It was a Colombian deal for the stage win as the two proved to be faster than the other attackers, with Quintana being just a little bit slower than Sosa, which allowed the INEOS rider to claim the stage victory.

A 45 kilometers time - trial for today's Italian Grand Tour. Some interesting gaps could be created today as Dumoulin is no doubt looking to increase what has been so far a very commanding lead.
It hasn't been a great Giro so far for Geraint Thomas, sitting in 23rd in the general classification, more than 5 minutes down to Dumoulin. Today he showed glimpses of why he finished on the podium in last year's race as he set one of the best times of the day.
De Plus was the first rider to beat Thomas' time and by quite a margin, finishing 33 seconds faster than the INEOS rider.
De Plus missed out on the victory in the prologue and it won't be one today either. His team-mate, Primoz Roglic stopped the clock 33 seconds better than the Belgian champion
Many overtakes on today's stage but perhaps the most important one was when Dumoulin caught Lopez. The pink jersey wearer was almost 3 minutes better than Lopez as he went on to win the stage, 21 seconds faster than Roglic.

Things in California started quite well for Jumbo in California, with Groenewegen grabbing the first stage win and held the leader's jersey for two days. Only one more opportunity would arise for sprinters in California though, in the very last stage, where Michael Matthews managed to get the best out of Groenewegen.
Groenewegen celebrating his stage win
The yellow jersey would go from one Jumbo rider to another as George Bennett won the queen stage in the third day of racing to take the jersey. Last year he wasn't able to leave the time - trial specialists behind him, but this year it was another deal as Valerio Conti was the only one matching his power on the climb.

Jungels and Kwiatkowski would both get some time back through time bonuses in the next stages and the time - trial, but it was not enough to beat Bennett, who managed to keep the lead even after the time - trial. Last year's winner, Bob Jungels was far too weak in the queen stage and even though he won the time - trial he failed to reach the overall podium.

Hectic finale today in Italy, with strong lateral wind and some crashes in the pack. Only one train was formed for the sprint and it was the Jumbo one. The 2 Colombian sprinters, Gaviria and Hodeg were more than happy to use the yellow train.
And they managed to get the better out of Danny Van Poppel with Gaviria claiming the stage win.

Another mass sprint in Italy and once again it was Jumbo's yellow train who took control of things in the closing kilometers of the stage.
Danny Van Poppel wasn't able to take advantage of his team-mates' excellent work, which resulted in a very close finish, again with the Colombian sprinters as the main characters. And once again it was Gaviria who claimed the win, his second in a row

De Plus has evolved quite nicely as well, fine Giro for your team considering the domination of Dumoulin

Roglic and De Plus have been really fine so far. A bit disappointed with Van Poppel's sprints lately. Good thing he got that early stage win
