Giro d' Italia - Stage 4
Stage 4 sees a mountain and then a sprint finish. Both Landaluze, Martinez and Anton tried to get away today but the peleton set an extreme pace throughout the stage. Only Gerolsteiners Schreck and Vaugrenard of FDJ were able to break free. But with 60km to go they hold a slender lead and will almost surely be caught.
And they're caught close to 30km from the finish. It'll be a sprint finish again.
Koldo Fernandez is trying to get into position. But the pace is so high that everyone is hurting right now!
With 2.8km to go he's absolutely spent! He found the wheel of Freire but the pace was just too high. No dice for Fernandez today.
Bennati again in a league of his own, he's followed by Hunter of Barloworld and Alejandro Valverde. Koldo Fernandez said he was very disappointed and "just don't know what happened" Well, he'll get more chances in the days to come.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 5
Another sprinterstage with a bit of hills on it. Fernandez told me this morning that "someone should have a talk with the Giro directors about all these damned hills!"
A bunch of breaks today. Out in the very front though is Kroon and Ivanov. It's obvious that Kroon is there for the KoM points so we know we'll have to watch out for him if we want that jersey. 100km to go on a sunny day with no wind.
The two hold out for quite a long time, but with 24km to go it's all over.
The pack now has one final hill to negotiate before the sprint to the line.
9,3km to go and we've just come over the small hill. Koldo Fernandez has found the wheel of sprinter-ace Bennati. But again he is suffering under the effects of the hill. He is however fairly well placed now!
With 2,4 to go they're off. It's gonna be uphill and Astarloza has to use some strength to make sure he stays at the front. Fernandez is still on Bennati's wheel.
But it's just too tough for him with the hill. Bennati seems to be the strongest, but here comes Valverde from behind!
And Valverde takes it by an inch. Bennati must feel he was robbed of that one. He looked like he had it

Giro d' Italia - Stage 6
Fernandez just looked at me this morning with a sort of "not 1.. not 2.. not 3..but 3 and an uphill sprint, are you kidding me?!" kind of look. I know he'll try his best. But i don't think we've got anyone suited for this kind of finish. Asterloza will have to make sure he doesn't lose any time tho'
With 97 to go the 4 man breakaway of the day has an 8 minute gap. But todays stage has been long and the pack is starting to move fast now. Landaluze is in the break and took the KoM sprint of the day.
Sure enough, at 51km the pack has the breakaway in sight. The peleton will be together as we hit the hills, it's going to be a rough finish!
Coming up on the first hill, only Astarloza is still feeling fresh.
Second hill, Astarloza won't lose time, but everyone else is spent by now. Tough finish!
We're over the top of the 2nd hill, the sprint is coming up and Astarloza tries to latch onto Bettini at the front.
But too late! Bettini flew off like an absolute rocket today! No way we could follow him! Almost everyone of the team will lose sometime it seems. Apart from our captain Astarloza.

Giro d' Italia - Stage 7
This years first mountainstage features some rugged terrain and then 2 small climbs towards the end. As the announcer said "It's not the dolomites but it'll give the local cycclingfans something to cheer about"
At 78km to go a 5 mean breaks is in front. Two smaller breaks are stuck between the front and the pack. Ivanov is the most prominent rider out there today.
On the first real climb the pack is starting to close in on the breakaway.
It'll be tough for them to hold out today!
Sella broke from the pack on the first climb and joins Ivanov, it'll be interesting to see what he can do today. In the pack Saunier Duval and Lampre have sent the heavy boys to do some work and it's starting to show as people are getting tired.
We're starting the last climb and it's Cobo and Piepoli in front. They are really going at it now! 22km to go.
15km to go and some of the outsiders attack. Schleck goes, Nibali goes.. Saunier are really puring it on. If this keeps up, we'll be forced into a defensive!
9,3km to go and we're just trying to hang onto the big boys. Valverde has brought himself to the very front of things, Cunego is powering ahead to snap up Pelizotti and Nibali. Barredo, Ricco and Piepoli are here too.
6km to go and we'll have to drop of now to avoid slowing too much. Ricco and Cunego attack!
1,4km to go and we're going at our own pace to try and conserve what little energy we have to(a fraction of yellow, not even visible on the screenshot) minimize the time lost.
Cunego, Ricco and Valverde are in a league of their own today!
It's Cunego 1st, Ricco 2nd and Valverde 3rd. Amazingly, Pfannberger had the energy to power up from behind and take 4th. It's Pelizotti in 5th, Barredo 6th, Nibali 7th and Astarloza manages 8th. We take a hit of a minutes time on the 2 Italians today.

Reaction
Astarloza rode smart today. The stage really didn't suit him as it was a series of smaller climbs stringed together but he managed to minimize the loss. In the GC we've moved up to 2nd spot, which is really nice and well done by Mikel.
Mikel's fitnesspeak is planned for the last 3rd of the Giro, when we hit the dolomites and there are some crucial timetrials, including a brutal 14km mountain timetrial. We have faith in Mikel's timetrialing ability, and compared to the immidiate comptetion. Mikel is probably one of the best timetrialists. So as we see it, it's looking pretty good. The next 2 stages are flat/small hills, then there's a rest day and a 36km timetrials.

Hey Mads...i've got a question
is it true that you can attack numerous times on the final climb (with good climber)? And that slelection on the climb never stops (some riders can struggle firstly on the ascend, but then they can join leading group)??
Because when i read your story (which is really great btw. congrats) i've got an impression that riding during mountain stages hasn't changed at all. |

It's changed a lot! In 07 i could've probably won this stage fairly easy on hard. The new system has a LOT of attacks. I think Ricco attacked 3 times on the final climb. And yes, riders who are going slow at first can suddenly come back and ride fast. It's all to do with the new energysystem. It's great! |
