Stage One of a five day tour through Portugal. GP Joaquim Agostinho
The riders for this tour would be mainly the older guys, with Drujon here for the sprints, and Malacarne now experienced enough to lead the squad, hopefully to a good overall position.
The first stage is a very hilly/mountainous stage with slopes in excess of 25% gradient. The finishing kilometre is at 12% gradient. This knowledge passed back from Theirry Jollet's ride quickly set us up for some good times.
Malacarne set a great time by going all out in the final kilometre, gaining over a minute back on the time lost on the rest of the course.
An early favourite for the overall was Castana, but he ended up only in the top 5 at that time, and following him was none less than Martinez, who went one better then Castana and blew his time away.

Our next riders were somewhat terrible for TTing, but they too used the same technique of all out on the final climb and we started dominating the tour, hands down.
Even Drujon kept the dream alive by finishing in the top 10!
Even experience Jose Azevedo couldn't do anything about Auber 93's dominance.

GC is the same.
Points are led by Malacarne, as is Young Riders jersey. Auber 93 leads the team classification as well. B)
I am surprised at how well I did. The setting is still on Hard, and I can reproduce those results easily I believe. This was just incase anyone doubted the authenticity of those results. B)

Stage Two of Joaquim Agostinha
A flat stage should see Malacarne hopefully retain his leadership if a sprinter doesn't manage to steal enough time bonuses to get the overall as well.
A break went as usual, comprising of 6 riders to start with. The best placed rider was at 27 seconds, but we were confident that they wouldn't get enough time bonuses and be able to stick with the peloton to disrupt out placings.
The break was controlled by Jollet and Chainel before some other teams took over control and helped to bring down the gap. Malacarne, Drujon and Brouzes were all looking comfortable in the pack.
With 15km left to go, most of our riders had dropped out the pack and were in various other groups behind. Drujon was still feeling great, and with 3km to go, he was moving swiftly up to a stronger wheel.
He couldn't move fast enough past everyone at the front however, and even though he was baring down on 3rd place, the finish arrived 50 metres too soon.
It would appear we lost the overall lead in our first day, but still have places 2-4 in the GC.

Stage 3 sees a nasty kick up right at the finale of the route. I suspect our top few positions will be very much under threat here.
A break of 15 tries to get away, but two of the Portugese teams don't like it and haul it back in, then a break of 13 gets away, and with that unlucky number, the break is allowed to go on its way.
The break is of course reeled back in before the climb, and as we hit the climb Malacarne, Drujon and Brouzes are all sat in the front group.
Malacarne responds to several attacks, but everyone else lets him waste his energy until all the favourites attack together, leaving Malacarne and Cofidis to TRY to pull back the rider alone.
Of course it wasnt going to happen, and Tondo solos away to victory.
A well placed attack by everyone screws our chances up once again.

Awesome in the TT, and unfortunate on Stage 2 that Drujon wasnt better positioned. I guess you shouldve been more patient in Stage 3 with Malacarne but at least youre still in the top 10.

Drujon errr, bonked only 1 bottle for 120km of racing meant most of the riders did.
Stage 4
Again, a hilly route with a little lump at the end. This time we weren't going to waste our energy, but we'd wait for the favourites to attack, and follow them.
A break of two went, but instead of going together, they kept a gap of 25 seconds for the entire stage.
They were soon out of energy, and so the pack was breathing down their necks. Cofidis thought that they'd send off one of their many riders still capable of doing something in an attempted lone break. But at 40km from the line, it was never going to work. The intermediate sprint soon put paid to that idea.
As we were approaching the final lump, most riders were struggling to keep up, and so Drujon and Brouzes went to protect Malacarne as best they could, to keep him as fresh as possible.
And as expected, the favourites attacked near the top. Barbosa and Azevedo were the only clear ones to get a gap, but Malacarne having countered just kept going down the slope.
He was joined by Barbosa who had sat up, and they started gaining ground on Azevedo, but it was too late, and the Portugese rider gained a quality win.
Malacarne managed to jump onto Barbosa's wheel and took a great 3rd place, some bonus seconds and a gap over the peloton. Great work by the youngster!

Stage One of the Tour of Qinghai Lake
A packed tour that would see us pitted against the teams we are fighting against for promotion.
Our squad were all looking for experience, especially Belkov and Tronet.
The stage is basically pan flat, and will be well suited to a rider like Wesemann.
A big group of Japanese riders all tried to get away, they weren't allowed first time, but then after attacking repetitively, the pack let them go away in small groups.
That was how the stage played out mostly, with a late attack by the breakaway just stalling the inevitable catch.
Tronet struggled coming upto the finish against some of the bigger sprinters, but managed to find a place on climber Sevilla's wheel.
When the sprint started, he roared off well, but then with 1km to go ran out of steam and started to go backwards, from 4th to 10th.

The final stage of Agostinha tour.
With only the bonuses on the line, the GC would probably remain the same. Having said that, correct positioning may change things up as the sprint is only 1.4km long.
A break went with the hope of making it all the way.
Eventually it would get up to 10 strong, but no every rider was working and so it was constantly being split apart and brought back together.
With a lap to go, 20km, the pack was only 30 seconds behind the break. On the final climb up the hill the break was reeled back in, and having sent up Drujon and Malacarne to relay in they were up front ready for the sprint.
Malacarne jumped on Pate's wheel and Drujon followed. Pate won, dragging over the two Auber 93 riders as well.

A brief update after the last tour on where we stand in the rankings. I know it's going to get suddenly very tough with Barloworld coming back into action. But Agritubel should start fading off soon as their races run out, and with Belkovs soon to happen stat boost i should get promoted *crosses fingers*

Stage two of Qinghai Lake
Another flat stage up in altitude should give Tronet another chance to shine.
A break went again, just 5 riders this time, and they managed to scoop up most of the points at the climbs and sprints.
But over the top of the last climb it split up as Chacon didn't want to give in. The peloton had slightly different views on the matter, and he soon had to give up the idea of a solo ride.
Before long there was 10km left, and Tronet was searching for a wheel again. He's learnt a bit since starting sprinting without Drujon, and he quickly found what he was looking for, a solo rider moving up the outside.
He jumped in before his team mate could do so, and followed his wheel up to 1km to go. From there he went for it and took a quality 5th place. More importantly none of Auber 93's main rivals have scored much today.

Stage Three saw a rather whopping great big hill in the middle. Only hill due to the gradient!
Other then that it would be a slightly downhill run in. Many of the pure sprinters would struggle to be able to compete having been worn out from the climb.
With the start being so close to an intermediate sprint, Belkov went off to get those bonus seconds. Memories of top 10 placings overall due to one sprint come to mind, so bonus seconds are always welcome.
He took the seconds easily, with the pack breathing down his neck, he sat up as the sprinters came thundering past.
A real break then formed of 4 riders.
It would stay away for most of the climb, but some vicious attacks from inside the peloton put many riders under pressure, and brought back some of the break.
Two were left out front until after the final sprint/climb point.
Having been brought back, it would be up to the sprinters to finish off the stage. We asked Tronet how he was feeling, and it wasn't good. Nearly being dropped off the back up the climb wore him out, so we told Levarlet to have a go for it. He was feeling great, so said no problem.
Gaudin moved him into prime position to find a wheel.
He found the green jerseys wheel and stuck to it, nearly taking home 4th place, but still taking 5th to continue our good run.

Stage Four of Qinghai Lake
A mountainous stage. Levarlet is pipped as a minor favourite thanks to his good sprinting and climbing stats.
We sent Tronet in an early break, but it seemed everyone wanted to go today, and so a massive chase for 50km started with attacks followed by chasing, followed by more attacks.
Eventually a break got away.
Even then it looked a bit like it wouldn't work with some riders sat in. But they sorted it out, and the gap grew.
Upon hitting the mountain, the break was a good 6 minutes up on the peloton.
Mattan attacked for the points at the top.
Going over the top, the break had 4 minutes still, and the gap didn't drop by much. Soon the peloton gave up the chase, and with 20km left the gap was still at 2minutes, and increasing!
Well, Pagoto from the break had enough, and went for the solo win from 11km out.
Levarlet had also had enough of sitting in, and so shot off the front of the weak peloton.
He narrowed the gap a bit, but not by much. And Pagoto claimed a great breakaway win. Levarlet took 8th on the stage.

Good time gain for Levarlet, could prove useful later on in the race.
Nicely timed xp level gains for your promotion push I think its the likes of Barloworld and Panaria that you need to worry about now

Yeah, that is a hard race to win with a rider that is not a good pure climber, like a Soler (he is the best rider that were probably be in a race like that). once, for fun, I rode a single stage of the Tour of Qinghai Lake that is one single moutain, going up and then descending (not sure which, but I will point it out when you ride it). I rode it with the best climbers on the Discovery team, and won with Contador, by 30 seconds over Levi and Popo, with the rest of my riders taking the next 5 spots. I won by 4:30 from 8-9, and 17:32 from 1-9. |
