Stage 7

Profile

So here it the last stage of Tirreno-Adriatico . We already have 3 stage wins and Vandewalle will win 100% the KOM Jersey . So all we want from this stage is for Mark to keep his Red Jersey , by winning, if it is possible . Smile

The race

A big break-away was formed by 10 riders : Belletti , Chaoufi , Spilak , Taborre , Lastras , Peterson , Puccio , Kump ,Cattaneo and Selvaggi . Their maximum lead was of 5 minutes .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0016_zpsae9a2225.jpg

With 5 kms to go Taborre was the last man from the break-away who was not caught by the pack . He had only a 25" gap . Our train was looking good , with Terpstra- Steegmas - Boonen - Cavendish . Goss , Boasson Hagen , Viviani and Sagan were all there .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0017_zps3313ece7.jpg

Boonen was again amazing ! Ventoso was the first to launch the sprint , followed by Degenkolb . Cav was still waiting behind Tom .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0018_zps7efc85b8.jpg

600 meters to go - it's between Mark , Degenkolb and Boasson Hagen . No sign of Sagan so we will most likely keep that Red Jersey !

Hagen hangs on and takes the 2nd win of this year's Tirreno ! Another podium by Mark who wins the Points Standings ! Smile

All in all it has been a great Tirreno-Adriatico for us . We got 3 stage wins (2- Cavendish , 1-Vandewalle ) , the Points and KOM Jerseys . Great ride by our team , especially by Vandewalle , Mark and also Tomeke who us a great lead-out ! Smile Our next race : Nokere Koerse , last rehersal before La Primavera ! Wink

Amazing from the team. Hats off, brilliant performance.

Soo close today, but good that you won the points jersey Grin
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

Thanks ! Smile And the GC is very odd , but look at the profile , not 1 TT , not 1 tough stage . That's why Mark had top 10's in all of them ! Wink

Thanks ! The team was just amazing both in Paris-Nice and Tirreno ! Wink

Boasson Hagen beat Mark a few times in Oman , 2 wins in Tirreno , he looks very strong ! This makes winning the Points Jersey even more impressive !

This is a 1.1 classic in Belgium . For us this will be our final rehersal before La Primavera .Steegmans won in 2011 , Chichi in 2012 , let's hope that a rider from QuickStep wins again !

Our line-up is very strong , but Milano-San-Remo is in just 3 days , so we don't want to tire Boonen and Chava. So we will probably go for Vandenbergh or Terpstra .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0022_zps0a5e9801.jpg

The race

A 6-man break-away was formed : Cousin ,Renshaw, Kennaugh, Ingnatchenko , Groen and Verrecken . Their maximum lead was of 6 minutes .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0023_zpse9c27162.jpg

As we almost caught them , with 25 kms to go Scheirlinckx and Bak attacked from the pack and almost caught the break-away . Terpstra decided to join them .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0024_zps86919137.jpg

With 15 kms to go the 9-men group had only a 25-second gap in front of the peloton . Terpstra decided to go solo .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0025_zpse3abc428.jpg

But he could not keep the high pace and he was caught after only 5 kms . Bak attacked again . He looked to be very strong . 1.5 kms to go he has a 12-second gap . We enter the last portion of cobbles . Vandenberg will sprint for us .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0026_zpsbf57352e.jpg

But Bak could not be caught . Vandenbergh finished only 11th

Milano SanRemo

Here it is ! La Primavera- first monument of the year . It is the longest race of all , almost 300kms . Even if it is mostly flat , the length of the race and the small climbs from the end will really tire the riders .

Profile

forums.roadbikereview.com/attachments/pro-cycling-race-discussion/277058d1363030475t-milano-sanremo-2013-milan-sanremo-profile.jpg

The race is mostly flat , but there are 5 climbs in the last 50 kilometers . First there are Capo Melo , Capo Cerva and Capo Berta at arounf the 250-km mark . Then, with 22 kilometers to go there will be Cipressa , the hardest climb , and the last one will be Poggio di Sanremo . If the sprinters can hang on they have a good chance of winning , but many other will attack on Cipressa and Poggio .

Line-up

Our team is probably the strongest that we could have sent . Boonen is our leader , but if Mark survives the hills we will help him in a sprint . We also have 2 strong free-elements Tepstra and Chavanel , so we expect a good result . Smile

The race

A 5-man break-away was formed after only 20 kilomters : Eros Capecchi , Richie Porte , Stefano Garzelli , Maarten Tjallingii and Petr Ignatenko . Their maximum lead was of 9 minutes , at the start of Le Manie climb .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0029_zpsf9ec8598.jpg

They were caught on Cipressa . A few riders tried to attack there but the pace was just too high . With 10 kms to go a group of riders attacked from the pack : Vansummeren , Cancellara , Flecha , Boom and Nuyens . We only had 4 riders reamaining in the peloton : Cav , Boonen , Chava and Terpstra .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0030_zps31b58695.jpg

Here it is : Poggio ! Vansummeren gave up , he was there just to help Nuyens . But the other 4 riders still had a small gap , of around 10 seconds. Sagan himself was trying to close the distance . Mark was suffering , but he was still holding on!

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0031_zpsf0e30ea5.jpg

They were caught right at the top of the climb and Boasson Hagen , Gilbert and Leukemans tried their chances on the downhill .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0032_zpse3f75327.jpg

They were joined by Sagan and the 4 of them had a small lead with 5 kms to go . Chavanel was leading the pack , with Tom and Mark behind him ! Things are looking good ! Smile

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0033_zps4207e87a.jpg

Boasson Hagen fell and Gilbert was a victim too ! Shock It seemed they were too aggresive on the downhill ! As a result they were caught and our team was in complete control with 3 kilometers left .

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0034_zps94eb3fd4.jpg

Mark was really tired and we did not for Sagan and Degenkolb to take advantage of our work and beat Cav in a sprint so Boonen attacked with 2 kms to go !!! Now it was up to them to catch him !

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0035_zpse719871c.jpg

But they had no team-mates around so Tom Boonen is enjoying his first win of the season , and what a win : Milano-SanRemo!!! Banana

i1152.photobucket.com/albums/p495/usuperstar/PCM0036_zpsed2e4a93.jpg

Tough fight for the remaining podium places , it seemed that Degenkolb came 2nd . It will be a photo finish between Sagan and Goss !
