Race Report
Istrian Spring Trophy Stage 3

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zpse77df99d.jpg

Another tough stage that is up and down all day with a final climb to decide the overall classification. It's not as steep as yesterday's final climb but it will still be hard after a long day in the saddle. The team will have to work very hard today as they all rally round Kim to try to clinch the team's first overall victory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-75_zps8ecc31fe.jpg
After an original breakaway attempt of SIXTEEN riders was inevitably brought back, a group of five riders escaped and quickly pulled out a gap. Sky were more than happy with this small, weak group and they let the gap get to seven minutes before getting to work.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-65_zps56338c42.jpg
As soon as Sky's U23s started to work, they never stopped, making the day very uncomfortable for the non-climbers. Oget, Van Niekerk and Johansson were relaying at the head of the peloton for the best part of 100km as the gap shrunk to just two minutes on the penultimate climb. As you would expect, several riders tried to get away on this climb but Sky, with help from a couple of other teams, kept them in check.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-60_zps86520780.jpg
Like yesterday, Kim knew he had to set his own rhythm on the final climb, so hit the front immediately. Today, he took Bracco and Zabala with him as they created a little gap to the rest. After a while, Bracco dropped back and was replaced by Steensen, who rode across the gap on his own. Behind, Dombrowski was moving to the front with Fischer on his wheel. Would the group be able to catch the front three?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-67_zps383e240a.jpg
Unfortunately, in the final kilometre, they did and Kim just doesn't have the speed to challenge in a sprint. Barton took the win but with Dombrowski in second, the American took the GC lead by a handful of seconds. Steensen held on for third, just outsprinting Zabala, with Kim in sixth and Fischer coming through in ninth. Just four seconds between success and failure. Cycling can be a cruel sport.

Of course a shame that we lost the GC lead, but second is still great, and maybe Kim could get some bonification seconds in the IS?
Otherwise, second is still great. And Diego did a great job finishing 4th Wink

Great race, don't forget it's just the second of the year, more will come and will be better... Diego is showing pretty strong, I thought he could lose some time because he was working for Kim... and Bracco, I guess he isn't in a good shape yet... honestly him and Diego, look like the leaders of the team for the season, at least in stage races... Contratulations!!!

pd. Fischer, what a great rider!

What a shame that Kim has lost GC, this was a wonderful race for the team though. Diego did a good job in the sprint and Fischer shows his skills with a great attack!

mvhoogdalem
Great racing from Sky again, 3 riders in top 10 Smile Too bad Kim lost the lead in the GC.

Fischer did his best, though Dombrowski is too strong to wheelsuck Pfft

Its okay for the moment but we have to work hard the next few stages

Day 1

Was very nervous today, but manager say, just ride hard. But no good, course was very short. Not good for me. Still, best of team, so protection for me tomorrow I think.

Day 2

Was awesome day today, I win race! Manager told me set pace at final clumb, so I set pace, but no one follow, so I keep going. Stupid american try to attack and get me back, but american no good. Yoo-suk win race! Go Sky! Go North-Korea! I want to thank manager for confidence. I have mellow johnny now, hope I don't lose.

Day 3

Sad day today. Team mates work very hard to protect me, but stupid american to tricksy. I am sorry, team mates, I lost mellow johnny. Sprint no good for me. Now, I must attack tomorrow!
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

You're doing well Kim, good luck tomorrow!

Thanks Ollfardh, that made me laugh. "but American no good"

@Jesleyh, there are some bonus seconds but Kim's complete lack of acceleration and speed could cause him problems there!

@kadtagenero, yeah Zabala will definitely get his chance to lead the team in some stage races this year. Bracco's legs aren't great at the moment.

@mvhoogdalem, one minute he was right behind Dombrowski, then I looked back and he was nowhere! A bad decision to try and follow him! Embarassed

Hmm... Ricardo (Bracco) will need some work, get his form right Pfft

Race Report
Istrian Spring Trophy Stage 4

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-67_zps52b8d2d6.jpg

The final stage in Croatia is a short flat blast that will surely end in a sprint. Despite there being two categorised climbs there are absolutely no hills here and the task will be to stay upright and get to the finish for the sprint. Kim starts the day four seconds off the lead with a maximum of 38 seconds in bonuses on today's stage. Can he pull off a miracle?

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-75_zpsd5b5b941.jpg
At the first intermediate sprint, with the breakaway only a few seconds up the road, Kim went on the attack to try to pick up the seconds he needed. Agonisingly, Branaa decided he wanted to sprint even though he had no points in the competition and pushed Kim into second. These four seconds moved him level on time with Dombrowski.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-65_zpsde6dc77b.jpg
After that, the race settled down and a break of six got away. The highest placed rider was over twelve minutes down but obviously the sprinters' teams weren't going to let these guys get too far away on this short stage. The group did, however, mop up the rest of the bonus seconds meaning Dombrowski had clinched the victory.

Coming into the final twenty kilometres it was, as usual, Chipotle on the front along with UK Youth, working for Von Hoff and Opie respectively. The young Australian is comfortably the quickest man here and if his team got the finish right, there should be no stopping him. Jaquin was the man who would lead Sky's charge today and Fischer was helping the Frenchman out.

As predicted, Von Hoff had way too much for everyone else as he saw off Pipp and Kozubek to take the win that also moved him up to third overall. Jaquin got blocked by Opie's leadout man and couldn't get back into it as he eventually finished thirteenth, behind Dombrowski! Kim crossed the line in 39th, knowing that he had missed out on victory by the narrowest of margins but still found the winner and shook his hand. It wasn't all bad news as all eight members of the team got on the podium to pick up the team prize.

Sorry, but don't UCI rules say that if time is equal, the rider with the most stage wins gets it? Pfft
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Jesleyh
Still a successful week in Croatia..
I think Kim would have won the GC if he finished before Dombo though, not sure how that works Frown
Grabbing the team classification is great though Wink
Hope I'll ride Normandië Pfft

btw, I really like that you do 1 or 2 reports per day. There's really a nice pace in it.
