Ian's Blog
August 2, 2012
I don't know if I told you but I WON! It's been a couple of days since Getxo and I still can't believe that I managed to win that race. If I was to make a list of races that I could win, that one wouldn't even be in the top 100!! It's just a great feeling when you know that you're going to win inside that last kilometre. I want to feel that again before the end of the season and I've got a few chances left, starting with the long, brutal Volta a Portugal. Eleven stages, of which ten are hilly and the other one a mountain stage! Even the two time trials are hilly so there won't be much for the rouleurs here. Should be great fun though.
Anyway it's August now, just three months to go in this long season, even though I only started at the end of March! Here's the July review:
There's only one place to start really. The Tour was successfully defended by Cadel Evans with some mighty performances. He beat Wiggins by nearly five minutes, with Gesink completing the podium. The Schlecks finished way down in eighth and ninth, Frank beating Andy. Cav won the green with three stage wins. San Sebastian was won by Nibali, who outsprinted home favourite Samu Sanchez. Poels had a good month, while in La Poly Normande, Van de Walle just pipped Faiers to the win. Tom coming home a superb second.
In the rankings, Endura are still on track to get promoted incredibly. We just keep winning! Project 1t4i have almost clinched their promotion, with Saxo Bank needing a Vuelta win from the returning Contador otherwise they're in a lot of trouble. FDJ and AG2R are the other teams in trouble. In the individual rankings, JTL is down to sixth after not riding for a while but I've climbed up to 23rd with my strong results this month.
Finally, on the new signings, I am amazed that the management have been able to get some of them to sign for us but it just shows how much our budget has gone up. Hivert will be immense, I'm sure of it, and Ghyselinck was what we really needed, a man for the cobbles. Brad Smith joined the team yesterday as our trainee and he looks absolutely amazing. He could "do a Battaglin" even though they are very different types of riders! His first race is the Tour of Denmark, which starts today. Good luck to all the guys out there.
See you in Portugal,
Ian Bibby

Nice first victory. First victories often happen in the weirdest stages, in my experience. I once had a one-rider story, also about a climber, and his first professional win was in the Ronde van West-Vlaanderen, if you know it. Flat but also a little hilly.
Congratulations.

Thanks for the various bananas and congratulations. It was a bit surprising that he stayed away but if you don't try, you don't win!
@baggieboys, thanks for the jersey, it looks perfect ingame. As it happens I've just signed the Belgian TT champ...
Tour of Portugal coming up.

August 4, 2012 - Volta a Portugal Stage 1
Race Preview
Ian: "The race starts with a time trial which is so short that it's basically a sprint! But the course has two uphill drags which will give the punchier riders a chance of winning against the out and out time triallists."
Ian: "We have no GC aims here but a top ten should certainly be doable. Our goal here is stage wins, with Faiers, Downing, Camano or myself. Today, myself or Partridge should be the best chance."
Ian: "I am the luxury team mate again here. With all of the hilly stages, I don't have a shot at the overall but should be able to get to the end of most stages and help the leaders. I want to perform well today though and see how I can finish."

Ian: "Movistar and Euskaltel bring weak squads but will still be the main danger here. GreenEdge bring Albasini and Weening, while UnitedHealthcare, 1t4i and Colombia Coldeportes will all have a chance."
Race Report
The most successful rider of the season so far, Marcel Kittel is here, surprising given the lack of any flat stages, but he is also a great time triallist. The German was quick but couldn't beat Rob Partridge, who had, as usual, gone out early nd gone fastest.
The first man that could beat Partridge was NetApp's Dietziker. The Swiss rider taking a second off the best time. Not long after, new Endura signing, Geschke also beat Partridge followed by Lancaster, but none of them could beat Dietziker.
Artem Ovechkin of RusVelo flew round the course and beat Dietziker by an amazing four seconds. On such a short course, to go that much quicker is truly stunning. Geniez and Javier Moreno also went quicker than Dietziker.
Iker Camano is hoping to do well on the GC here and he needed a good start. He went three seconds slower than Ovechkin to go a provisional third. He was soon knocked down the order by Gutierrez and Konovalovas.
Another Project 1t4i rider with a strong time trial was promising talent, Tom Dumoulin. He went round quickly but not fast enough to dislodge Ovechkin, going one second slower than the Russian.
He wasn't second for long though, as Luke Durbridge did what he does best and beat everyone to go quickest. He did the same time as Ovechkin but beat him by a few tenths of a second. It looked like a win for GreenEdge.
Ian Bibby was one of the last TT specialists to hit the course and he knew just what he had to do. However, the hills made it tough for Ian as he crossed the line in eighth with the same time as Camano. Bruseghin was the only remaining rider to beat Bibby, meaning ninth place for Ian, with Camano two places further ahead.

"I usually love prologues, but that was very hard with two uphill sections that really hurt your legs. It was so short, though, that it was pretty pointless. The last guy only lost fifteen seconds to the winner, so in theory, could be in the lead tomorrow! Anyway, a top ten is a great start for myself and Camano, and Faiers was a brilliant eleventh aswell. Let's do some racing!"

August 5, 2012 - Volta a Portugal Stage 2
Race Preview
Ian: "This stage is defined by one huge lump in the second half. The steep climb will cause big problems for those out and out sprinters, so it should end in a reduced bunch sprint with the punchy sprinters battling for the win."
Ian: "Downing has a very good shot at winning this today if we look after him right. The climb shouldn't cause him too much trouble and then we should be able to help him at the end."
Ian: "I will be helping Russ today as well as working on the front, if we need to. Hopefully, we have got a chance of taking the leader's jersey at the end but to do that, we have to win."

Race Report
On the early categorised climb, four riders got away from the peloton. They were Day (UnitedHealthcare), Bellemakers (Landbouwkrediet), Eskov (RusVelo) and Hooghiemster (NSP). They were nearly two minutes ahead at the top.
They were soon joined by four more riders, Zuazubiskar (Orbea), Mironov (RusVelo), Eloy Ruiz (Andalucia) and Daniel Mestre (Carmim-Prio). At the halfway stage, they were over eight minutes ahead of the bunch.
GreenEdge were busy trying to defend Durbridge's leaders jersey, even Albasini was helping out! Eritrean climber Teklehaimanot was also up there for the Australian team. The gap was soon coming down, and the riders were soon flying out the back, including the likes of De Maar, Egoi Martinez and Kittel.
On the final run in to the finish, the now three man break were still two minutes clear. Bellemakers tried to get away from Day and Mironov with 20km to go but he didn't get too far. Endura were now on the front with Partridge, Fleeman and Bibby giving everything to try to pull the break back.
The break was caught in the final kilometre but Landbouwkrediet didn't cry about Bellemakers' near miss and instead just sent Traksel to do the job. The Dutchman just beat Russell Downing on the line, with De Backer, Baugnies and Javier Moreno up there aswell in an incredibly tight finish.

"So close! That was a hard day and I was pulling really hard in the final few kilometres to catch the break, as GreenEdge just didn't do enough. Russell had to go solo but he loves doing that and he missed out by half a wheel. He moves up to third overall. For us it was a great day because we all finished in the front group whilst loads of guys lost time after getting dropped on that steep climb. But tougher stages lie ahead and we have to keep this form and see if we can get the stage win."

August 6, 2012 - Volta a Portugal Stage 3
Race Preview
Ian: "Stage three is one of the hardest of the race and will certainly shake up the GC. Constant climbing, most of it very steep, will cause serious problems for all but the strongest here before a tough uphill finish really sorts the men from the boys."
Ian: "Today will be key in deciding who our leader here is, although as I already said, we're not specifically targeting the GC. Camano should be strong today, but the climbs might be too long for Faiers. One thing is for sure, we're all gonna be in pain tonight."
Ian: "Hopefully, I can get over most of these climbs and then help whoever I need to on the final climb. My finishing position doesn't really matter today as it's about getting one of the leaders up there."

Race Report
The breakaway that went away at the start contained ten riders including Partridge for Endura. However, the hideously steep climbs, including this one at 17%, saw the group reduced to four. The three on the climb are Schorn, Meier and Ramirez Abeja. Egoi Martinez is just behind them after puncturing but he caught back up.
With 60km still to go, Doi and De Maar attacked out of the peloton and started bridging the three minute gap. The peloton was already down to around 65 riders at this point as they hit another climb at 16%.
On the penultimate categorised climb, fifty kilometres from the finish, the yellow jersey of Traksel could keep up no longer. These climbs are far too long for Bobbie and he had to admit defeat. He wasn't the only one though, with the peloton now down to just forty riders. McEvoy, Blain and Partridge had all gone out the back.
Movistar were bringing back the six riders out ahead but it wasn't really necessary as they were dying on their bikes. Downing was soon out the back but the remaining four Endura riders looked strong.
Just before the final climb, Moreno decided that he couldn't wait for the ascent and left the peloton behind. Nobody went with him but good work by Fleeman and Bibby got Camano into a great position on the climb. Faiers was now struggling and wouldn't be able to compete at the finish.
Nobody could compete with Javier Moreno as he took an easy win for Movistar. Geniez was the nearest to him with Duarte in third. Camano finished sixth with Faiers in tenth and Bibby in thirteenth. The time gaps were huge and seventeen riders finished outside the time limit.

"That was one hell of a hard stage! I had a good day though, my legs felt strong and I made it over the climbs quite comfortably before I helped Camano up the final climb. The problem is that most of the stages here are like that and I don't know if my legs can take it. The longest race I've ever done is eight stages and this is eleven. None of them are easy days either. If I can survive, a top ten might be possible but it's unlikely as I'll be riding for my team mates."

Danish Delight for Voss
Endura Racing's remarkable season continued in the Post Danmark Rundt this week with the team's biggest overall win of the season. The HC race around Denmark consisted of six stages, of which four were pan flat, with one hilly stage and a time trial. Therefore, the race was ideally suited to Paul Voss. It was the hilly third stage into Vejle where Voss made his move as he attacked just before the final climb to take the win by twenty seconds.
Paul Voss escaped the bunch to win stage three in Denmark before clinching the race in the time trial.
After losing the leader's jersey to JJ Haedo with the bonus seconds dished out at the end of stage four, Voss had a lot to do in the fourteen-kilometre time trial. But this didn't bother the German as he was on fire and trounced the opposition again to retake yellow by 21 seconds. The final stage was eventful and very high-paced but everyone finished together, meaning Voss took a huge victory for himself and the team. Tennant's strong TT also delivered him a top ten finish in eighth, while stagiaire Brad Smith finished sixteenth, but without time bonuses, he would have been just outside the top ten. A very promising start for him, but Voss was the star of the show.

Nice result in Denmark.
In Portugal, I think the climb to Torre won't really suit Ian, but perhaps he can keep his top-15.

The race in Portugal is really hard, so it will be very difficult to score any result with Ian, I think. Torre is indeed very challenging, but it's the long, hilly stages which cause him more trouble so we'll have to see. Plus he's only a team mate, but he might get in a breakaway if he loses enough time.
And well done Voss indeed, that was his audition to be a team leader next season. It went well!

August 7, 2012 - Volta a Portugal Stage 4
Race Preview
Ian: "A short stage that ends with another uphill finish at Mondim de Basto. It should be easier than yesterday but it will still be another painful day with lots of short, steep climbs."
Ian: "Another day for Camano and Faiers to try and get in amongst it although Tom seems to be struggling here with the long climbs. Another day of hell for McEvoy, Partridge and Blain lies ahead."
Ian: "Another day where my job consists of getting over all the climbs before helping Camano on the final climb. Hopefully, Iker can finish it off."

Race Report
The break of nine struggled to establish itself, taking thirty kilometres to finally make it away. Teklehaimanot is at the back here with two Euskaltel riders also present, Bilbao and Cabedo.
Colombia were doing the work today for Duarte today with help from Euskaltel, oddly trying to pull back a break that contained two of their riders! The gap was coming down quickly as the steep climbs continued. One section hit 24%!
The peloton was already down to seventeen riders before the final climb with Bruseghin doing all the damage. Endura still had four riders in the group, with Camano, Faiers, Bibby and Fleeman.
On to the final climb and Amets Txurruka was the first to launch the attack, no surprise there. He pulled a small gap out but Bruseghin was continuing to exert pressure for Moreno. Fleeman and Bibby had done their job and dropped out the back.
But Txurruka was caught by five riders, Bruseghin, Moreno, Duarte, Geniez and Camano. Faiers was cooked but Iker was doing brilliantly. It would come down to a sprint between these six for the win.
Moreno couldn't repeat what he did yesterday with Duarte beating the Movistar man. Geniez was third ahead of Bruseghin and Txurruka. Camano had nothing left for the sprint and drifted into sixth. Faiers was eighth with Bibby struggling to eighteenth. Another tough day.

"That was another deceptively hard stage. The profiles just don't do it justice. It was short but there were so many steep climbs again which just sap your energy. Fortunately, I managed to get over them all and help Camano at the end. I managed to get him into the main group of six aswell, so it went pretty well. If every say is like this, I will be absolutely dead by the final few stages, I'm telling you now."

August 8, 2012 - Volta a Portugal Stage 5
Race Preview
Ian: "Guess what, it's another uphill finish! This is getting a bit repetitive but it certainly does make the race entertaining for the neutrals. Not for the non-climbers though!"
Ian: "No change again, try to get Camano up with the top guys and see if Faiers can do any better. We won't be going for the breakaway today, again, because the stages get a tiny bit easier after today, so there might be a chance for a break later on."
Ian: "This race has really taken a toll on my legs already, but I'm still ok to carry on doing my job for now. Same as the last two days for me."

Race Report
Today's breakaway took a whole sixty kilometres to form, and when it did, it only contained five riders. The best rider was Dirk Bellemakers of Landbouwkrediet but none of them stood a chance with the tough finish that lay in store.
The peloton was being driven along by all sorts of teams today and, as usual, the gap to the leaders just evaporated on the tough climbs near the end. On the first time up to Gouveia, the break was caught and a forty man peloton approached the finish.
On to the final climb, GreenEdge, who have been very poor so far, were trying to do something. First Albasini, then Weening tried to get away but Moreno, Duarte and Geniez are just too strong here. All of Endura's guys were already in serious trouble. It wouldn't be our day.
And Moreno made it look easy again as he just rode away from the others on the final 11% section. Duarte was again his closest rival, with Bruseghin and Txurruka the others breaking away from the bunch.
The next group was led across the line by Konig in the white jersey and Geniez in the green jersey. Camano followed them in seventh, with Faiers and Bibby just outside the top ten. Another good performance from the Basque but Faiers continues to struggle with these steep climbs.

"Ouch, this race just keeps on giving. Giving pain, that is. That finish was even steeper than yesterday but I actually finished much stronger today. Unfortunately Faiers had terrible legs today so we'll never know what he could have done if he'd been alright. Nevertheless, Camano is really surprising a lot of people here, finishing well in the top ten everyday. The next two stages have flat finishes so hopefully, my legs can have a bit of a rest. However, seeing as I'll have to be Russell's lead out man, I doubt that's going to happen!"
