@fernando, thanks for the question. Smile

TDF is very unlikely, but the Vuelta is possible depending on how the rest of the season goes. Spilak would love to have a go in Spain, I would imagine. The major goal is the Tour de Pologne though. The main challenge is getting wildcards for the bigger races!

Tour de Romandie Stage 1 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-55.jpg
Favourites: Martin, Wiggins, Boasson Hagen, Millar, Cavendish

Yet another incredibly short time trial opens the tour. A 3km blast around Martigny which will do absolutely nothing but put somebody into the leader's jersey. Our goal is just to get all eight riders round and hope Velits loses as little time as possible.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-70.jpg
Oddly, Bradley Wiggins was one of the first riders off the start ramp, and he set a commanding time of 4'48. That was going to be very hard to beat and the former British time trial champion could now relax.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-57.jpg
Another ex-British TT champ, Millar was the first rider to challenge Wiggo, going round the course one second slower than the Sky rider.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-65.jpg
Italian champion, Malori of Lampre stunned everyone with a time of 4'47 to go one second quicker than Wiggins. I don't think anybody expected that at the start of the day, but the Italian is obviously in good shape.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-52.jpg
But the Brits weren't off the top for long as the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish showed his pedigree over the short time trials and beat Malori by one second.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-30.jpg
Peter Velits had a good run, going as fast as he possibly could, but his lack of form meant he could only finish the day in 32nd, 9 seconds down. Definitely still in touch.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-26.jpg
The time trialling monster that is Tony Martin was out there aswell and despite being the pre race favourite, he could only do the same time as Wiggins in third place.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-21.jpg
The final rider on the course was Norwegian TT champ, Boasson Hagen. The in-team battle between him and Cav was already starting, but Edvald got nowhere near, being four seconds slower. Superb win for the World Champion today.

Tour de Romandie Stage 2 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-71.jpg
Favourites: Cunego, Horner, Albasini, Nieve, Kloden

This is the Queen Stage of this year's Tour de Romandie and due to it being so early in the race, it won't really create massive gaps. However, the final climb is steep and the yellow jersey is up for grabs because Cavendish hasn't got a prayer of holding on to it. Velits will try to stay with the climbers if they attack at the end, whilst Bole will wait in the peloton for the final sprint. Of course, we will be trying to put somebody in the breakaway aswell.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-56.jpg
The early break consisted of six riders, with Konig getting into it. The biggest riders alongside the Czech climber were Steegmans, Vermeltfoort and Agnoli.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-57.jpg
As the climbing began, another eleven riders rode across to the front group. There were two FDJ riders including Fedrigo as well as Di Luca and Fischer.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-63.jpg
This group then split again, with six riders going on the attack. Konig was one of those six that went over the first climb first. Zingle (Cofidis) won the mountain sprint with Konig third.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-58.jpg
However, not long after this summit, all 17 riders were back in the peloton. After a while, Van der Sande (Lotto) and Ferrari (Androni) went away, but neither of them were really good enough to stand a chance.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-66.jpg
Approaching the intermediate sprint before the final climb, one more rider was ahead of the peloton. Bram Tankink of Rabobank had given it a go, but it was over before the final ascent.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-61.jpg
On to the final climb and, while Lampre were setting the pace for Cunego, on the other side of the road, Kiserlovski was bringing Velits to the front. Bole was just behind this and feeling extremely good. Now we were waiting for the attacks.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-53.jpg
There were numerous attacks, including Velits, Cunego and Horner, but only two riders got away, Albasini (GreenEdge) and Nieve (Euskaltel). These two were riding shoulder to shoulder to the finish.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-44.jpg
And it was the Swiss rider who took the win on home soil ahead of Nieve. Great win for GreenEdge. The sprint for third behind was won by Cunego, who gained 11 seconds on the rest of the bunch, headed by Horner and Menchov.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0010-36.jpg
Our highest placed finisher, meanwhile, was Bole, who sprinted to a fantastic 11th, ahead of Lastras, Brutt and Vandevelde. Peter Velits came home 22nd just behind Haussler, but ahead of Florencio. They both got the same time as Horner.

Team Summary
A good day for the team, Peter stayed up with the favourites and moved into the top 20 overall, whilst Bole just missed out on a top ten finish. Tomorrow's stage has more climbing but the finish should be a lot more routine with a flat run in.

Tour de Romandie Stage 3 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-72.jpg
Favourites: Cunego, Horner, Albasini, Sagan, Kloden

Another difficult up and down stage, with the finish on a steep slope, but the main decisions will be made on the long, steep climb before that. Again, we need to keep Velits out of trouble.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0002-57.jpg
The original breakaway contained six riders, with Szmyd in it. This was fine by the peloton, who let it go, but eleven more riders bridging the gap ended the break.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-58.jpg
However, Szmyd wasn't finished and stayed ahead of the peloton. Unfortunately, only one rider, Felline (Androni) was with him, which didn't give them much chance of succeeding.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-64.jpg
After a while, they were joined by the outrageously strong van Avermaet of BMC, who set such a high pace that Szmyd and Felline could do nothing but hang on. In the background, Costa rides across to the front group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-59.jpg
As you would expect, as soon as Costa made it to the front group, he and van Avermaet left the other two behind. Szmyd sat up and waited for the peloton to help his leaders. The front two had four minutes on the peloton at this point.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-67.jpg
On to the final climb and Costa and van Avermaet were soon joined by Albasini, Cunego and Horner, the three best riders here. Behind, there were lots of attacks, including Bole who made it away from the peloton in a group with Kloden.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-62.jpg
Through the final sprint of the day Cunego and Albasini had left the others behind and would fight for the stage win. Unfortunately, Bole's group had been caught by the peloton, so our focus switched to Velits.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-54.jpg
But Albasini couldn't make it 2 out of 2, as Cunego took the victory. A group of four just behind was surprisingly headed by Cummings ahead of Chris Horner.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0009-45.jpg
Velits sprinted to 13th just behind Sagan and Boasson Hagen and gets the same time as Minard in seventh. Bole finished 20th. Velits manages to maintain 17th overall.

Team Summary
Today was one of those frustrating days you get in the WorldTour when your riders just aren't quite good enough. Szmyd tried his hardest but used too much energy to get into the break, whilst Bole put in a really good attack on the final climb, but got brought back afterwards. Velits did really well, but the finish was really narrow and he couldn't get past the guys in front of him. Looking at the GC, a top 10 looks impossible, but a top 15 should be on still.

@beagle whoops, my bad. He's got too many consonants in his name!

@freitas, he's getting there. Hopefully not too soon! Embarassed

Tour de Romandie Stage 4 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0011-32.jpg
Favourites: Cavendish, Greipel, Farrar, Petacchi, Rojas

The favourites will almost certainly be treating this stage as a rest day. There is a bit of climbing in the final third of the stage which should ensure a breakaway takes it. If, however, it does come down to a bunch finish, it will be interesting to see if the pure sprinters have still got enough in their legs to beat the likes of Sagan, Boasson Hagen and Bole.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0012-27.jpg
Today's BotD formed very quickly and contained seven riders. They were Grivko, Vermeltfoort, Tosatto, M.Bodnar, Zingle, Rollin and Nepomnyachshiy. They built up a lead of 11:00 by the halfway point of the stage.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-22.jpg
As we predicted, none of the favourites were interested in racing today and GreenEdge were the only team on the front because Grivko was in the race lead as it stood. They brought it down to 8:00 by the top of the long climb.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0014-20.jpg
As the breakaway went over the final climb, Bodnar was way out the back and Grivko was really struggling. His fitness isn't quite at a level where he can challenge yet. It looked like the other five would fight for victory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0015-15.jpg
And indeed, as soon as the sprint started, Grivko had to let the wheels go and cruise in to sixth place. Zingle was leading the sprint out but Rollin, Vermeltfoort and Tosatto were in better positions.

The Rabobank rider, Vermeltfoort, took the win from Tosatto. Rollin completed the podium, while Grivko finished sixth, 54 seconds down. The peloton came home four minutes later, with Cavendish leading Breschel and Freire. Bole came a solid 12th.

Team Summary
That was a shame for Grivko. He had a real chance of getting a podium today but that final climb was just too hard for him. Behind, Bole had a good sprint but it was all a bit pointless, whilst Velits moved up a place to 16th after a huge crash in the peloton brought down Michael Rogers. Three riders had to withdraw, Maes, De Weert and Dyachenko. Tomorrow is the time trial, where Velits needs to have the ride of his life to see where he can get to on GC, as the standings are so close.

Tour de Romandie Stage 5 Report

Favourites: Martin, Wiggins, Kloden, Menchov, Boasson Hagen

This is the all-important time trial. 20km with a predominantly uphill run all the way to the finish. If Velits has a good day, a top ten is possible.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0019-11.jpg
The first good time was set by Alex Rasmussen of Garmin, who, despite his complete lack of climbing ability, he set the fastest time, 28 seconds quicker than early leader, Kohler (BMC).

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0020-10.jpg
Just like the prologue, Malori went quickest, a whopping 17 seconds quicker than Rasmussen.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0023-6.jpg
World champ Tony Martin was obviously the favourite for the stage, but he clearly hasn't been in great shape this week. Despite this, Tony went 46 seconds quicker than Malori!

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0025-4.jpg
Former World TT champion Michael Rogers lost a lot of time and was hoping to make up for it today. He did a very good job, going just 5 seconds down on Martin in second.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0026-4.jpg
Peter Velits was having a great day and after setting the fastest time at the intermediate check, he did the same time as Rogers in second place. It looked very good for Peter.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0027-2.jpg
Veteran Andreas Kloden of Radioshack then laid some serious smackdown on his opponents, beating Martin by 20 whole seconds. A stunning time by the German, who was never gonna get beaten with that.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0028-2.jpg
Brad Wiggins should have been right up there today, but for whatever reason, he wasn't comfortable out there and could only go 14th, 42 seconds down on Kloden.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0029-2.jpg
Another old-timer, Menchov was looking impressive, and finished third ten seconds down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0030-2.jpg
Damiano Cunego is certainly not an expert in this discipline, but the course suited him with lots of climbing. Amazingly, he was the closest to Kloden today, 9 seconds down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0031-2.jpg
Albasini was enjoying his final kilometre in the yellow jersey as Cunego would be in that tomorrow. He finished joint 16th, 51 seconds down. This meant that Peter Velits finished the day in a great sixth place.

Team Summary
Superb day for us, we were hoping that Velits would have a good day and he certainly did. A sixth place moves him well into the top ten with just one stage to go, which is exactly what we were hoping for at the start of the week. There shouldn't be many changes tomorrow as the finish is pan flat, but we can't take any chances. Peter has to finish this off.

Nice TT by Velits today, he even beat WigginsWink

rorzcp
even though TdF is not aim, will you try for wildcard?

brewers90
@sutty, yeah, he's in good shape now and he was +4 on the day, so I was delighted with that.

@rorzcp, I have just applied for a wildcard. Obviously, it's the biggest race in the world, so going there would be great for the sponsors, but I'm not entirely sure what team I'd take if we got a wildcard! Pfft

Tour de Romandie Stage 6 Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0001-73.jpg
Favourites: Boasson Hagen, Rojas, Sagan, Haussler, Bole

The final stage is classed as hilly, but the climbing is out of the way quite early, so this will either be a mass sprint or another breakaway victory.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0003-59.jpg
Knowing that the breakaway stood a good chance of succeeding today, a lot of riders went on the attack. It was originally 14 riders, but Ciolek strangely sat up and went back to the peloton. Konig was again our representative in the BotD.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0004-65.jpg
As Fedrigo led the break over the top of the first climb, it was clear that the peloton weren't interested today, and the front group was already 8:00 ahead. Konig was in average shape.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0005-60.jpg
With the gap at 12:00, Lampre finally decided to put in a chase on the final descent. By the foot of it, the peloton were 9:00 down.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0006-68.jpg
At 10km to go, Kiryienka, Moncoutié and Santaromita tried to escape from their breakaway companions. Santaromita failed, but the other two got away successfully.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0007-63.jpg
And it was Moncoutié who very narrowly outsprinted Kiryienka on the uphill finish to take the win. Kaschechkin took third, whilst Konig struggled at the finish and could only get 12th.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0008-55.jpg
The sprint in the bunch was won by, who else, Cunego ahead of Bole, Kiserlovski and Velits. Unfortunately, the gap back to the peloton was 8'45, which meant Velits agonisingly lost 3 places on the GC. Frustrated.

Team Summary
We are absolutely gutted today. Miscommunication today cost us three places on the GC, but Velits just clings on to the top ten. We weren't happy with the sprinters' teams, like Sky, Movistar and Liquigas either. What's the point in bringing the likes of Cavendish, Boasson Hagen, Sagan and Rojas if you're not going to give them a chance of winning?! Konig, again, wasn't strong enough in a group that contained some really strong riders. Looking ahead, we have a one day race in Germany today, before we head to Denmark for the Giro. Everyone in the team is excited now.

On to our final race before the Giro, a German one day race with a ridiculously long name, based around Frankfurt. The race has three main climbs as well as a few smaller ones, and therefore, it will probably not be a proper bunch sprint, but, either a reduced sprint or a late attack. Recent winners are Degenkolb, Wegmann (twice), Kroon and Garzelli, which shows that you need to be able to climb to perform here. Because of the amount of climbing, we have brought Kocjan back in to the team in place of Hutarovich, whilst Bozic will hope to continue his recent form should it come down to a sprint. Our main rivals are probably Europcar, who have surprisingly brought everybody's favourite rider, Voeckler.

Rund um den Finanzplatz Eschborn - Frankfurt Report

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0013-23.jpg
Soon after the breakaway had formed, Zsolt Der rode across and set the pace to ensure that this breakaway was successful. Originally, there were eight riders in this group.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0014-21.jpg
Now, the group had swelled to ten riders and they were four minutes in front of the peloton. Der had a problem in that every time he went uphill, he dropped the other riders and had to wait for them. This group was too weak.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0015-16.jpg
Fortunately for Der, Kump (Adria Mobil) had rode across to the breakaway and the two of them left the others behind. The gap was now seven minutes over the peloton and it looked good for them.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0016-15.jpg
With Saxo Bank and Europcar ramping the pace up in the bunch, the peloton was down to around 30 riders. Both Gazvoda and Stybar had been sent to get water for the team, but never made it back.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0017-16.jpg
After the final climb, the main bunch was now down to eleven riders, with only Kocjan in it for us. The gap to the front two was still over two minutes and Der and Kump would fight for victory today. The rest of the breakaway had been gobbled up.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0018-11.jpg
Unfortunately, Kump was much stronger than Der today and strolled to a comfortable victory in the final kilometre. We really hope Kump will join us at some point in the future. Great prospect.

i1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd369/brewers90/PCM0019-12.jpg
Kocjan easily won the sprint for third to complete an all Eastern European podium, but not in the right order from our point of view. Further back, Bozic finished 20th, just ahead of Chuzhda and the impressive Szeghalmi.

Team Summary
Well, second and third, our old friends have returned. Fair play to Kump, he was mighty today, and oh boy, do we want to sign him when his contract ends next season. Der was out there for 160km today for a magnificent second, whilst Europcar just couldn't do enough to allow Kocjan to go for victory. We just ran out of team mates today unfortunately. Never mind, on to the Giro.

Latest News and Updates

The latest news from the cycling world at the end of April, where the focus is on the Spring Classics in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. There were also big stage races in the Basque Country and Switzerland. Here's the round-up:

The major winners in April were the usual suspects, Cancellara and Gilbert. There were big wins also for Valverde, Rodriguez and Cunego. Winners of the bigger continental races included Plaza, Cavendish, Bosisio and van Hecke.

The April rider of the month is Joaquim Rodriguez. The Spaniard won La Fleche Wallonne as well as finishing second in Liege and third in the Pais Vasco. The young rider of the month is Dutchman Mats Boeve of De Rijke who won the overall and the KoM in Drenthe.

Rankings

Cunego shoots to the top of the World rankings with a dominant performance in Romandie as well as top fives in the Basque Country and all three Ardennes classics. Cancellara moves ahead of Hushovd, whilst Rodriguez and Gilbert are surprisingly far behind despite their strong performances.

In the teams rankings, BMC profited from strong performances from their unbelievably good classics teams, led by Hushovd and Gilbert. Sky have had a very quiet month, while Radioshack and Lampre continue to climb the rankings.

The continental tour is still led by Hoste from Bole although both have had a quiet month and Scheirlinckx has nearly caught Grega. Fantastic wins for Bosisio (Trentino) and van Hecke (Turkey) propel them up the rankings, with Bozic's great late-month form netting him a place in the top ten.

Despite Accent Jobs having two riders in the top three in the individual rankings, it's Bole's team Skoda - Orlen who lead the way here thanks to their consistency and squad depth. After that, there are the three big Belgian teams and Europcar, with some of the big Continental Tour teams completely absent at the moment.

The CQ ranking is led by Cancellara, but less than 100 points separate him, Cunego and Hushovd. Tight at the top. Vicioso surprisingly maintains a place in the top five, with Hoste the top Continental Tour rider, level with compatriot Boonen.

Movistar and BMC are way ahead of the rest at the moment in the CQ rankings but with a Grand Tour just around the corner, this will almost certainly change by the end of May. New boys Skoda - Orlen are still in the top ten, despite people saying they would fade away after their strong start. They are also going to be present at the Giro, so it could get even better for them soon.
