With the excitement of the Tour de France over, and July turning to August, the French peloton will again take the road. Formally a post-Tour criterium, the race has been dominated by Française des Jeux, with the team taking the past three editions. Two of those wins by future Saur - Sojasun riders, Benoît Vaugrenard in 2007 and Matthieu Ladagnous in 2009.

The team would love to have similar results.

The first half of the race was very tame. A few minor breakaway attempts, but nothing stuck. The spectators who had lined the early kilometers would go home disappointed.

However, a sprinter, Coen Vermeltfoort, who got the action going in the second half. After finishing the 5th circuit, the Rabobank CT rider took off.

Vermeltfoort attacks the peloton.

Three other riders would try to make the move with the Dutch rider. José Iván Gutiérrez, Emanuele Sella, and Job Vissers all tried to follow.

Three riders chase Vermeltfoort.

The quality of Gutiérrez and Sella was too much for Vissers. He could not stay with the attack. However, Vermeltfoort had enough of a lead to remain with the pair. With 70km on the day, the three had a lead of 3'38".

Saur - Sojasun were worried about letting Gutiérrez and Sella gain a lead, however, it was not their responsibility to chase them down. The work would be done by ISD - Neri.

Two ISD riders lead a shrinking peloton.

All of Saur's riders have not ridden since mid-June. This, combined with the high pace, made it a tough day for most. Only Jérémie Galland could stick with the main field.

Up ahead, Gutiérrez and Sella began to raise the pace, dropping Vermeltfoort.

Gutiérrez and Sella climb away.

With 20km remaining, the pair still had a lead of 1'51". It was a manageable lead for the peloton to deal with, however, no rider or team seemed to want to take up the cause. Finally, with 15km, Galland went to the front to work, seemingly for the good of others.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/557.jpg
Galland fights to bring the peloton back.

Perhaps the lead was too large, or perhaps Galland's heart was not in it, but the peloton would not catch the breakaway pair.

Gutiérrez would enter the final straights ahead of Sella.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/558.jpg
Gutiérrez and Sella begin their sprints.

Sella had lost a bit of contact with Gutiérrez around the final bend, and this advantage was enough for Gutiérrez to make it to the line just ahead of the controversial Italian.

Behind them, the peloton would charge to the line. Too late to the party, Vaugrenard would take 3rd. Galland would finish with the main group in 21st.

Gutiérrez celebrates his victory, perhaps "gifted" to him by a sleepy peloton.

Paris - Corrèze: Stage 1: St. Amand Montrond: 206.1km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/560.jpg

A recently created race, Paris - Corrèze is a two day race that will favor a hilly sprinter. The first day is almost completely flat, while the second day is quite hilly.

While he has no chance at overall victory, Saur - Sojasun will hope for a good ride from Jimmy Casper on the first day. On the second day, hopes that either Guillaume Levarlet or Jonathan Hivert step up.

A break of 8 riders would get clear of the peloton today.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/561.jpg
The break never threatened.

Their maximum lead would occur with 80km left on the day. At that point, they were 6'16" ahead of the peloton. From this point on, the main field would steadily wind them in. They would be arrested 13.4km from the line.

Casper would not have the benefit of his sprint train or lead-out man Jimmy Engoulvent. He would have to work in tandem with Romain Matheou to find a good wheel.

Initially, Casper looked to be in great position before Wesley Sulzberger moved Gianni Meersman way ahead on the other side of the road.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/562.jpg
Casper in Matheou's wheel, way behind Meersman.

Given this disadvantage, Casper launched his sprint much earlier than planned. He would not have the strength to make up the difference, and would fade back in the final meters. He finished the day in 8th. Matheou, as a lead-out man, grabbed 10th, his highest placing this season.

Meersman's great positioning and lead-out would be too much for anyone. He easily cruised to victory.

Meersman's victory was a credit to Sulzberger's work.

Tuco the Ugly
Paris - Corrèze: Stage 2: St. Objat - Objat: 153.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/564.jpg

A circuit in and around the commune of Objat would be the route for the second and final stage of of Paris - Corrèze. The main feature on the day would be the Col des Géants which would be climbed 5 times on the day.

Another future Saur - Sojasun rider would get some mention today, with Cédric Pineau being part of a 3 man break.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/565.jpg
Pineau leads the break.

The three riders would reach the Col des Géants for the first time with a lead of 2'04". Clearly, the peloton was not going to let the deciding stage go to the breakaway.

When the peloton reached the climb for the first time, there was immediately actions. Constantino Zaballa, John Gadret, and Kanstantsin Siutsou attacked.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/566.jpg
The early attacks.

The peloton would not make the same mistake as yesterday and allow strong riders to get clear. They would immediately close down the riders, forcing an earlier than expected selection. 25 riders would be strong enough to continue with the main group. For Saur, only Hivert was among them.

The small, main field would continue on, easily cleaning up Pineau and the breakaway.

After the initial excitement on the first circuit, the pace remained high, but steady.

Fast forward to the penultimate climb, and the pace was really tiring some of the riders. Slowly, the group thinned. One of the last riders to slip away was Hivert. He battled hard, but hit a wall near the top of the climb. He would finish 13th on the day.

A group of 11 riders would continue ahead of the field with one climb left.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/567.jpg
The leading group of 11 riders.

Up the final climb, the group would shed two riders following an acceleration from Peter Velits. The young Slovakian was trying to distance race leader Gianni Meersman, who was riding impressively. However, the presence of teammates Benoît Vaugrenard and Jérémy Roy would make this task hard. Roy closed down the first attack.

As soon as this attack happened, Cyril Dessel attacked. He was followed by two Saxo Bank riders, Chris Anker Sørensen and Gustav Larsson. The three would get clear.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/568.jpg
Dessel goes over the top with two Saxo Bank riders right behind.

The three riders would work to try to hold of the chasing group of six, lead by Vaugrenard.

Trying to preserve Meersman's lead, Vaugrenard worked hard and came very close to bringing all the riders back together on the final, small rise.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/569.jpg
Vaugrenard leads Meersman in an effort to chase down Dessel and the Saxo boys.

Vaugrenard needed help, and no one was willing to give it. He would not be able to completely close down the leaders.

Dessel, who always looked the freshest, moved away from Sørensen and Larsson down the final straight and would take the stage victory. In the final sprint, the chasing group continued to make up group, leading to a scenario where the overall victory would be determined by the time differences the race commissaires would give out.

After 30 minutes of delay, they emerged from a trailer stating Dessel crossed the line 17" ahead of Meersman, enough for the win.

Really great signings, especially Vaugrenard. Keeping it realistic too, with the signings. Good luck for the final races of the year.

Tombola
Really nice story! I like it that you ride with a team which isn't able to win everything and has to fight for it! I started the season with Lowik-van Losser in PCM07, downloaded a 2005 database, lol! Succes, i'll keep following you!!!!

Tour de l'Ain

As the racing in France heats up, the Tour de l'Ain, begins today with a short prologue. The next two stages will be flat and mass sprints are expected. The fourth stage is a hilly one, but the queen stage is the last stage, which will feature the Col du Grand Colombier.

Saur - Sojasun will come, hoping to make a mark in the latter half of the race. The team's best sprint hope is Romain Matheou, who the team doesn't have much faith in. A top 10 would be a welcomed result.

For GC purposes, Jérôme Coppel will be leading the team.

Tour de l'Ain: Stage 2: Lagnieu - St. Vulbas: 132.8km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/572.jpg

The second stage of the Tour de l'Ain is relatively flat, save for the Col de Fay, around 20km from the finish line. The climb is not likely large enough to see any decisive action, but it will probably entice some adventurous riders to try.

After the departure, a break of 5 riders formed. Rony Martias made the move for Saur - Sojasun. He was joined by Simon Zahner (BMC), Simon Zahner (Continental Team Differdange), Gaël Malacarne (Bretagne - Schuller), and Evan Olipant (Endura).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/573.jpg
The break of the day.

The break quickly worked to create an advantage.

With 100km left, they had a lead of 5'16".

At this point, the peloton started to work to wind in the break. However, they seemed rather lackadaisical, probably underestimating the size and strength of the break.

The 5 riders all worked well and took their full turns. As a result, their lead came down very slowly.

They would reach the Col de Fay with a lead of 3'01."

On the climb, Knudsen immediately found himself in trouble and was dropped by the break.

However, only a kilometer later, Evan Oliphant was able to create a small gap between him and the remaining three riders.

He would go over the top alone, 27" ahead of Martias, Malacarne, and Zahner, and 2'09" ahead of the peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/574.jpg
Oliphant climbs away on the Col de Fay.

The run-in to St. Vulbas would be fast, with everyone desperately trying to chase down Oliphant.

Martias moved to the head of his group and found a good rhythm, and began to slowly eat into the advantage.

Behind them all, the peloton was racing, in hopes of arresting the riders before the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/575.jpg
The final kilometers: Oliphant, followed by a group of three, all chased by the peloton.

Martias and his group were never able to recapture Oliphant, and as they entered the sprint, his group was swallowed by the peloton. Nevertheless, Martias still finished 11th on the day.

However, the charging peloton could not catch all the riders. Oliphant had calculated his effort perfectly, making to the line ahead of Jesús Del Nero and Kenny Van Hummel.

Thanks to bonus seconds, Van Hummel would assume the GC lead.

Tour de l'Ain: Stage 3: Le Parc Des Oiseaux - Trevoux: 132.6km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/577.jpg

The third stage is straight forward. A short 132 kilometers to the commune of Trevoux, a suburb of Lyon.

A break would get away today. It contained 5 riders. The peloton, seemingly having learned its lesson yesterday to not underestimate a break, did not give today's much freedom.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/578.jpg
The break.

The ride was fairly mundane, and the break was easily arrested with 8.6km left on the day. Today, would clearly be settled in a mass sprint.

Without one of their top sprinters, Saur - Sojasun would rely on Romain Matheou. He did well, finding the wheel of Arnold Jeanneson.

However, he, along with the rest of the field would try to catch Kenny Van Hummel, who launched his sprint early and was ahead of the field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/579.jpg
Van Hummel leads in the final kilometer.

Van Hummel clearly is in great shape, as he was able to maintain his pace for such a long sprint, crossing the line first

Matheou performed well, finishing in 6th.

Van Hummel honors the yellow jersey with victory.

Tour de l'Ain: Stage 4: Montmerle-Sur-Saone - Arbent: 159.9km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/581.jpg

The fourth stage of the Tour de l'Ain will see the GC battle begin to heat up. A hilly stage, the day features 4 climbs on the day, with third on the day, the Col du Berthiand being the toughest.

Saur - Sojasun wanted to get a rider in the break today. Jean-Marc Marino was the rider selected to try to make the move. After around 10 kilometers passed, Marino burst forth from the peloton, in hopes of forming a break.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/582.jpg
Marino tries to form an early breakaway.

But Marino's efforts would not be realized, as his group would be pulled back. A second attempt was half-hearted and it was clear that Marino no longer had the strength to make an effective breakaway attempt.

Jérémie Galland was next in line.

He was more successful, making the break of the day. The other riders with him were Baptiste Planckaert (Landbouwkrediet), Mats Boeve (Rabobank CT), Raffaele Ferrara (CarmioOro NGC), Jeff Louder (BMC), Gert-Jan Van Immerseel (Jong Vlaanderen - Bauknecht), Dimitri Le Boulch (Big Mat - Auber 93), Jack Bauer (Endura), and Jocelyn Bar (Roubaix Lille Métropole).

Galland makes the break of the day.

The peloton did not give the break much freedom, but the riders worked hard as the reached the first climb of the day, the Côte des Esses Treffort. While it seemed rather tame, the breakaway would split up on the climb. Only 5 riders made it over with good energy, Galland being one of them.

At the top, they had a lead of 3'34" over the peloton.

Galland descents with the leading group on the Côte des Esses Treffort.

The next climb saw no action, as the group of 5 breakaway riders where still strong.

Back in the peloton, GC leader Kenny Van Hummel lost contact with the peloton. This came as no surprise given his lack of climbing abilities. Gianni Meersman (Française des Jeux) was now in great position to assume the overall lead.

As the big climb of the day, the Col du Berthiand approached, Galland went to the front of group. He was feeling really strong and wanted to push the advantage.

Immediately, Le Boulch and Bauer were in trouble. Only Louder and Ferrara could keep up with Galland's pace.

Galland pulls away with Louder and Ferrara on the Col du Berthiand.

Galland continued to grind away on the pedals. After another kilometer, the pace was too much for Ferrara.

It was now Galland and Louder ahead of the field.

Galland's pace is too much for Ferrara, as him and Louder move away.

Two kilometers remained on the climb, and Galland was determined to drop Louder, who was clearly the weaker rider.

Finally, as he reached the 1km to go sign, Galland found himself alone.

He would go over the top 35" ahead of Louder and 2'00" ahead of the peloton.

1km from the top, Galland is alone.

Back in the peloton, Française des Jeux was doing the chasing, as Meersman was still in the main group. The pace of the chase was fast, and had taken a toll on the peloton. Only around 25 riders remained. Guillaume Levarlet and Jérôme Coppel were present for Saur - Sojasun.

Française des Jeux lead the chase.

Galland was able to reach the final climb of the day, the Côte de Samognat, with a good amount of energy left. It he could summit the climb first, it seemed likely he would be able to gut out the last 8km for the win.

However, in order to do so, he would have to be able to hold off the impending attacks from the peloton. He started the climb with a lead of 1'37".

It didn't take long, as the climb was short. David Moncoutié (Cofidis) took off and John Gadret would follow.

Moncoutié and Gadret attack and catch Louder. Galland is in their sights.

The two caught Louder, who had been floundering between Galland and the chasing peloton. However, their attack petered out before they could get to Galland's wheel.

And while they were resting for another push, Galland was able to get to the top of the climb, alone.

Galland stays away from the chasers as he summits the last climb of the day.

The final 8 kilometers of the day were painful for Galland, who by this point, was exhausted.

Back in the peloton, Coppel and Levarlet tried to slow the chase down, but were unsuccessful in their attempts.

However, it seemed everyone in the field was tired from chasing Galland all day. Galland would go under the flamme rouge just ahead of the field.

As he rounded the final corner, the line was in sight.

Around the final corner, Galland digs deep to get to the line first.

Galland was able to take his time and soak in the atmosphere. A great ride would culminate in victory, something Saur - Sojasun has been lacking recently.

Meersman was able to come in 23rd, with the main field, to take the yellow jersey. An impressive ride from the young Belgian.

A triumphant Galland crosses the line first.
