29.08.2009: Vuelta a España
The not so interesting period between the Tour and la Vuelta has brought us some victories. Andreas Klöden won the Urkiola Igoera, while José Ruberia claimed the win in Tre Valli Varesine. Levi Leipheimer began his Vuelta preparations by winning a stage in Tour de l'Ain, before taking home a time trial stage win and the overall in the Regio Tour.
The Vuelta a España 2009 begins away from Spain for only the second time in the race's history. The first four stages takes place in the Netherlands and Belgium. After a calm start, the Vuelta has lots of mountains towards the end. There are only 60kms of time trialling.
A lot of the Tour de France riders are here for the Vuelta. The biggest favourites for the general classification are Contador, Evans, S. Sanchez, F. Schleck and Karpets. Some of the outsiders are Pereiro, who finished 5th in the TdF, Gerdemann, Lövkvist, Cobo and Plaza. How these riders will perform depends a lot on their late-season form, and we don't know who will be in shape for this race.
Some great sprinters enter the Vuelta as well. Cavendish and the Cervelo duo Haussler/Hushovd should be the main favourites, but Freire or Rojas could do well on home soil. Katusha brings good sprinters as usual, while Breschel and Bennati should never be underestimated. As with the GC favourites, there are question marks over some of the sprinters' fitness.
For Discovery, five of the Tour riders are back for the Vuelta. Our leader is Levi Leipheimer, but we don't know if he will be able to keep up the pressure through the whole race. He has been riding since early february, and could feel the long season in his legs. Nevertheless, we hope for the overall win. Chris Horner will be riding the last grand tour of his carreer, while Vaitkus is here to finally give us some bite in the sprints.

Thanks!
Letting Popo win will be difficult. He has the worst fitness on our team, because he has been riding in California, Paris-Nice, Tour de Suisse and the TDF. He has already over 70 race days.
But we'll see what Levi can do!

29.08.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 1
Assen - Assen: 6.8km
Tactics meeting
The opening prologue of the Vuelta a España takes place in the Netherlands. With no Cancellara in la Vuelta, Levi can do very well today.
Thomas Lövkvist set the early best time.
Vasil Kiryienka of Caisse d'Epargne bested it with 2 seconds.
Kiryienka led for a long time, but the winner of the Tour TT, Cadel Evans, eventually beat him by 3 seconds.
Then came Levi. He gave himself a great position in the fight for the overall win by winning the prologue with 7 seconds over Evans!

30.08.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 2
Assen - Emmen: 202.0km
Tactics meeting
We're still in the Netherlands, and the second stage is completely flat. We are going to keep Levi's golden jersey, so the stage will end in a bunch sprint. For the first time, we'll see what Vaitkus can do in a grand tour sprint.
Norwegian national champion Thor Hushovd won the sprint in front of Tomas Vaitkus. Great result from our sprinter, who doesn't even have a lead-out man. Bonifications move Hushovd into 2nd place overall, and Vaitkus into 5th. Game crashed, so I only have this low-quality picture.

Yeah, if Vaitkus can't make it, it's great that Thor wins
He was very invisible in the Tour, but it looks like he'll be the sprinter to beat in la Vuelta. |

31.08.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 3
Zutphen - Venlo: 194.1km
Tactics meeting
Another perfectly flat stage, which means Vaitkus can have another go at a stage win. The rest of the team will work to keep any breakaways under control.
For the second day in a row, Vaitkus was unable to overtake Thor Hushovd. He in turn, didn't manage to beat Martin Elmiger, who got a somewhat surprising stage win. Because of the bonifications, Thor Hushovd gets the golden jersey, while Vaitkus moves into 3rd place overall.

Thor power, he crushes the opposition with his mighty hammer.
Wanted to add a video with Jeremy Clarckson screaming power but couldn't find one, bad luck.

01.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 4
Venlo - Lieja: 224.5km
Tactics meeting
The last stage in Northern Europe visits some of the same roads used in the Amstel Gold Race and the Liége-Bastogne-Liége classics. It ends in Liége, which will be the first city having hosted stages of the Giro, Tour and Vuelta. As the course resembles an Ardennes classic, some sprinters should have problems hanging on for the finale.
On the second climb of the day, 92km from the finish, Belgian classics specialist Philippe Gilbert attacked.
He eventually passed all the riders out in front, and with 25km remaining, he held a lead of 2'30 over the peloton.
When there were 15km left, Sanchez decided to go after Gilbert.
Samuel Sanchez, being dangerous in the overall classification, inspired the forming of a chase group containing eight riders. Fränk Schleck and Oscar Pereiro were among the chasers, together with the Discovery trio Popovych, Rubiera, and Leipheimer.
But nobody could catch Philippe Gilbert, who took a great win just a few kilometers away from his hometown! His fantastic solo effort had lasted 90km, and it had earned him the golden jersey.
Samuel Sanchez finished 1'39 behind Gilbert, half a minute in front of the chase group.

02.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 5
Tarragona - Vinaroz: 175.4km
Tactics meeting
In real life, there was a rest day before this stage because of the transfer from Belgium to Spain, but it looks like we'll have to make do with just a night's sleep after the long flight. The team bus drivers and mechanics must be exhausted. Anyway, we're at Spanish soil for the fifth stage, which is quite flat except two small climbs midway through. It should end in another mass sprint.
3km before the finishing line, sprinter Thor Hushovd made a crazy attack. What on earth were Cervelo doing? Hushovd would have better chances in a sprint!
The last time I criticized Cervelo's tactics, Gomez Marchante won on the Mont Ventoux. I should have learned my lesson then. Hushovd's attack confused everyone, and the big Norwegian held on for his second stage win. Amazing!

03.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 6
Xativa - Xativa: 186.4km
Tactics meeting
Today's stage is a 186km loop around the town of Xativa. It's quite flat, so it's probably one of those boring sprint stages again. Gilbert won't have any problems defending his maillot oro.
In a tight bunch sprint, Mark Cavendish proved to be the strongest. Quite surprisingly, Fabian Wegmann took second place. Martin Elmiger didn't finish with the peloton, so he drops out of the top ten overall.

04.09.2009: Vuelta a España
Stage 7
Valencia - Valencia: 31.4km
Tactics meeting
The first real time trial of this year's Vuelta is held on the Formula 1 course in Valencia. We're aiming for our Ferrari, Levi Leipheimer, to regain the maillot oro and hopefully take the stage win.
The first of the really big favourites to ride the course was Alberto Contador. The 2nd placed rider in this year's Tour de France recorded the best time so far.
Liberty Seguros leader Ruben Plaza finished 46 seconds behind Contador.
Thomas Lövkvist took over Plaza's 2nd place, coming in 34 seconds down on Contador.
The king of the Alps from the Tour de France, Linus Gerdemann, did a great time trial in Valencia, finishing only 2 seconds behind the leader Contador.
Swedish time trial specialist Gustav Larsson was the first rider to beat Contador. The Saxo Bank rider took the lead by 4 seconds.
Winner of the Annecy time trial in France, Cadel Evans, proved that he can consistently ride great time trials. He annihilated Larsson's time by 37 seconds! Was Evans the stage winner?
Only one man could answer that question. Levi Leipheimer showed why he's the best time trialler in the world this year. He got the golden leader's jersey, and took the stage win by a margin of 18 seconds over Cadel Evans.
