It wasn't until the very last cobbled section that some kind of move happened in this very uneventful edition. Olliver Naesen split the - average - field with his acceleration and Cortes made the cut for us.

i.imgur.com/229WWiG.png

Cortes sat far back for the final sprint and did not have too much left either, yet he would just make in into the top 10, his best ever result in this race.

The others pretty much piloted the fastest man in the group to the line, where Demare comfortably outsprinted them to win the race for the second time after coming second in 2019 too.

In the absence of our usual team captains, Quintana and Henao got their chance as a leader in the first World Tour edition of the gravel roads classic.

i.imgur.com/NobmS1j.png

Fiorenza Colla spent the day in the breakaway with Julien Simon, but a duo rarely stands a chance is this kind of race. They were both caught inside the last 25 kilometers.

Just over the final gravel sector, Calmejane made what would turn out to be a decisive move from a group that didn't include any of our men anymore.

Bottura couldn't keep his wheel, whereas Alaphilippe and Matthews failed to close the gap together. Calmejane eventually resisted the comeback of Bailly too on the steep Via Caterina in the old city centre of Siena.

----------

We never really made the headlines during this race and rightfully so. The first couple of stages were not too bad, with Izagirre losing about 20” to the stage winner and Barbero sprinting to a unexpected fifth place on day two.

Barbero also had very good legs on the third stage that had its finish close to the Vassiviere Lake, yet he spent way too much energy riding near the front. Guerreiro had to let go of the bunch and waved his GC ambition goodbye.

Gallopin lost the race lea on the stage to Rodez, where Stuyven won from a group of four with the new yellow jersey, Manfredi. The latter wouldn’t stay in the lead very long as he crashed out on the next day.

Izagirre had bad legs on the wrong day and lost about 3’30” to Chernetskiy, who took the stage and the yellow jersey. Ion dropped to GC 9th. An obvious yet not awarded time gap kept him from taking back some 40” on day six.

Sebastian Henao was part of a four-man breakaway on the seventh stage but saw his chances vanish in thin air when a companion took Seba down with him when he crashed. Ion made it over the climbs in the GC group but so did all of his closest competitors.

Ion set a solid time on the Col d’Èze time trial. De Gendt and Teuns however, both rode remarkably faster and forced him from 9th into 11th overall. Chernetskiy comfortably secured the biggest triumph of his career.

Slightly unsatisfying, but I blame the course, tailored to produce a pretty random result.

Yes indeed. I always struggle to do well at these slightly uphill finishes. Ion's stats are starting to drop now as well, but this could have been a GC top 5 if not for his bad day.

----------

We kicked off our Tirreno adventure with a simply disastrous team time trial and underwhelming results on the two flat stages. By the end of day three, Chávarri felt extremely sick and Quintana had lost much time because of a ill-timed crash.

Dayer bounced back nicely with a 9th place on the hilly stage to Chieti, where Mühlberger became the first GC rider to move into the blue jersey. Aru, Meintjes and Yates then ruined Bahrain's plan by leaving their leader behind on the mountain stage to Prati di Tivo. Dayer chose his own pace from the foot and crossed the line in 14th.

Edoardo Zardini used the hilly circuit stage on day six to secure the mountain jersey. Dayer moved up to GC 20th on that penultimate stage but lost 3 places on the conclusive time trial.

Local hero Aru rode slower than his GC rivals, yet he still won Tirreno - Adriatico for the second time. In the end, he did so by almost the slimmest of margins.

Despite countless tries, nobody was allowed to join poor Atle Veiby out front. With just one man in the break and the atrocious weather, some roadside campers did not even bother to open their tents.

i.imgur.com/oCFR2Zs.png
i.imgur.com/d4CWBMf.png

It was former world champion Jasha Sütterlin who lit up the race hours later with a surprising attack on Capo Berta. Sagan and Alaphilippe went with him and eventually Lampaert bridged as well. The four caught sight of Veiby at the foot of the Cipressa climb.

i.imgur.com/0hLpHVk.png
i.imgur.com/MsEuWm2.png

Once Veiby was back in the bunch, the chasers reduced the gap of the lead four to 20". Near the Poggio, however, they almost sat up collectively. Halfway up the climb, Barbero had enough of it as he jumped away.

Alaphilippe set the pace in the front group, which made Sagan crack just before the top. As he was unable to pick up the pace in the descent, a trio would fight for the win.

i.imgur.com/zdR0PBV.png

Lampaert saw both Alaphillipe and Sütterlin launch too early to keep up their sprinting effort. At the age of 29, winning Milano - Sanremo became the biggest achievement of his career.

Carlos started his sprint too late to stay clear of the bunch, but he did hold off Van Poppel to finish in 8th place, securing our first sponsor goal of the season.

Although Martínez, our sprinter for this race, had the worst legs on the opening day, we still could not have gotten off to a better start. Herrada ripped the pack apart over the last climb as the stage concluded with a unique 1-2-3 for the team and a second ever Catalunya stage win for Bilbao.

Team leader Verona accelerated from the bunch on the final climb of the second stage. He finished with the GC group as stage winner Dombrowski grabbed the overall lead.

Verona disappointed on the big mountain stage on day three as he fell through the ice on the penultimate climb already. Aru countered a long range attack from Dombrowski, who also saw De Gendt pass him near the line. Henao followed beautifully for us and came home in a superb 9th place.

Sitting in 6th with the same time as GC 5th Carthy, he saw Aru lose the race lead the day after because of the crash. Henao lost time himself on day 5, despite Veronalending him a strong hand.

We made the top 5 on the last two stages, both won by the breakaway. We missed the GC top 5 sponsor goal by about a minute, yet Henao's best ever GC result was a result worth cherishing.

That was genuinely one of my favorite results of this story. Such a shame it let him protect Verona which caused him to lose time earlier in the race...

Not much to be told about the race until Oliveira ripped the pack apart on the narrow cobbled Taaienberg. Most of our riders made the cut there but the group kept getting thinned on the remaining climb, which included Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg.

i.imgur.com/voPP1cu.png

Over Knokteberg, the last main difficulty of the day, Cerezo and Cortes both found themselves in the lead group. With no sprint of his own and little left in the tank, Cerezo focused on supporting Cortes as long as he could.

i.imgur.com/YJPTKbw.png

Cortes knew the leading group of 14 had several fasters sprinters in it than him and hoped to knock at least some of them out of contention with a late acceleration. INEOS' Lukas Spengler was looked at to close the gap.

i.imgur.com/nVk6uuV.png

Switzerlands' main man for the cobbles did so and went on to win the race after an impressively long sprint. Both Lutsenko and Sagan secured a podium spot by passing Cortes in the final 50 meters. Cerezo crossed the line in 12th.

A very inexperienced squad supported Cortes and Barbero very well and helped them make it through the hilly zone in this front group of 19. Barbero didn't have the legs to do more and gave everything to help Cortes.

The young Brazilian didn't have his best day either and didn't make the top 10 in a final sprint with many fast riders. Magnus Cort kept Spengler from making it two out of two, adding the biggest classic win of his career to his own tally.

One week before Itzulia, a team built around Verona and Chávarri raced in the Basque Country alreayd. Noria bridged to the breakaway by himself and saw Higinio Fernández leave the other three behind with 25 kilometers to go.

i.imgur.com/jOkE90t.png

Lotto, who had been working all day, disappeared from the fore so we had to take matters into our own hands. We didn't catch sight of Fernández until the final climb to the line.

i.imgur.com/oYfr7Zm.png

Fernández eventually made it to the line, despite the high pace and a strong sprint by several of our men. At the age of 32, he has finally managed to land his maiden pro win. Verona had to settle for back to back second places.

Rather leave the win to a rider like him indeed. Hopefully Verona can take this legs to the home race indeed.

Sadly no images of the second Monument of 2021 as the screenshots were nowhere to be found after the race.

On the old course, four of riders stayed with the favourites' group very long. Cortes and Cerezo were still there on the Muur, the penultimate difficulty. Peter Sagan split the group single-handedly at the steepest part and saw only David Helling keep up.

The duo kept its gap on the Bosberg, where Cortes failed to follow the chasing group, and he wouldn't catch up again.

Sagan beat Helling in a sprint à deux in Meerbeke to win his second Monument at long last. Lampaert won the sprint of the chasing group to complete the podium.

Cortes outsprinted Vanmarcke and former teammate Lature in group three to cross the line in 11th. That's only one place shy of the result demanded by the sponsors.

--------------------

The Yates brothers, multiple GT winner Kelderman, Alaphilippe, Formolo, Tirreno winner Aru, Mathieu van der Poel: they all headlined this year's gorgeous field.

The field's strength would show on day one already, when NTT ripped the bunch apart of the toughest climbs about halfway. It came as a total surprise that tem captain Verona had to let go their. So did the rest of the team bar Herrada, who rolled across the line in 6th as Alaphilippe thanked his teammates in the best way possibble.
The day after, Coquard made it two out of two for NTT with Barbero coming third.

The third stage proved to be too tough for Herrada because of NTT setting the pace again. While Adam Yates beat the GC top two, Verona bounced back with a solid 8th place, moving into GC 13th.

The Yates brothers kept the momentum on the annual Arate stage and put quite some time into Alaphilippe. Adam won the stage, Simon moved into the overall lead. Alaphilippe could have taken back time on day four if the jury hadn't bailed out the chasers. Two respectable results for Verona made him tackle the final day sitting in GC 7th.

Verona's conclusive time trial was mediocre and not nearly good enough to finish higher than 7th. Herrada rode a superb time trial, edging out specialists like Dumoulin and Mullen. The last rider and overall winner Simon Yates was the only one to finish even faster, proving how even his time trialing is still improving.

All in all a comfortable second overall win for Team INEOS' new flagship climber after an edition that could go down as the one with the most ridiculous time gaps.

Cant be too upset with 11th at RvV. 7th at Basque Country isn't bad either. Some big names ahead (apart from the Hungarian) and the gaps look huge. Usually when I race it the gaps are quite small for some reason.

Spoiler
I think stage 2's profile might be wrong. Smile
