172 kms | Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (1.UWT)
The CE Great Ocean Road Race featured on the World Tour calendar for the first time this year. As a result, not too many top riders showed up at the start line. Barbero hoped to do well here too after his win in Mallorca.
As Gougeard attacked from a reduced bunch on the last climb, our sprinter was strong enough to pull the chasing group almost on his own. When it mattered most, Sütterlin and Van Asbroeck refused to work with him and Roy Jans couldn't.
Bilbao caught up and helped Carlos out, but by then Gougeard's gap was decisive.
Barbero eventually missed the podium too when Sütterlin and Van Asbroeck finally stretched their legs in the final sprint.

Colombia National Championships
34.5 kms | Time Trial :: Paipa - Duitama
Only two our riders showed up for the mostly flat time trial, and in modest shape. Ochoa's performance was disappointing but Padilla did much better than expected.
Nehemías finished just a tad slower than the fastest riders of that moment. The big guns, however, rode quite a lot faster than all of them. Miguel Ángel López eventually took a clear win ahead of Nairo Quintana and time trial talent Karlo Aponte.

186.6 kms | Road Race :: Bucaramanga - Bucaramanga
Edward Beltran was riding alone out front when Heiner Parra attacked to join him. The others let him go.
We took the responsibility of keeping the two within reach, which was not an easy thing to do on the tricky course. With the laps to go Dayer Quintana attacked when we had no helpers left.
Our leader of the day never got closer to them than 1'20" because they kept working together perfectly.
No attacks happened between the two leaders. The difference was clear though on the home straight, where Beltran was visibly faster than Parra.

Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana (2.Pro)
Stage 1 | 15.2 km ITT
With our lineup, the only man who could make something from this time trial was Ruben Guerreiro. A solid ride made him join a very Italian top 5.
1 | | Raffaele Lo Monaco | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 21'50" | 2 | | Diego Ulissi | UAE-Team Emirates | + 15" | 3 | | Ivan Sassanelli | Team Total Direct Energie | + 17" | 4 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 24" | 5 | | Leonardo Scartabelli | Bahrain - McLaren | + 26" |
Stage 2 | 162.4 kms
With Ulissi being the only climber ahead of him in the standings, Ruben must have counted at least a little on grabbing the leaders jersey on stage two. However, he would end up playing catch up all the way up Coll de Fredes. As Ruben Fernández swept up Chamorro inside the last kilometer, Ruben finished over a minute down.
1 | | Rubén Fernández | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 3h48'18" | 2 | | Diego Ulissi | UAE-Team Emirates | + 25" | 3 | | Juan Chamorro | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 4 | | Jordi Simón | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 5 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 1'03" |
Stage 3 | 168.1 kms
Sprinter Carlos Barbero had the worst possible legs on the flat third stage, as he burned up most of his energy just keeping the wheel of the man in front of him. Thanks to the modest field he still crossed the line in sixth place.
1 | | Kenneth Vanbilsen | Lotto Soudal | 3h40'57" | 2 | | Michael Carbel | Team Arkéa - Samsic | s.t. | 3 | | Romain Cardis | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 4 | | Tonio Serratore | Vini Zabù - KTM | s.t. | 5 | | Gert-Jan Bosman | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 6 | | Carlos Barbero | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 4 | 138.4 kms
Ruben's plan for the brutal Xorret de Catí on stage 4 was simple: hit the climb like a madman to see if that would help him do something about the time lost on day two.
As soon as he started, a gap opened up behind him. When he caught and dropped breakaway rider Martinelli, Ruben had 35" on a group that didn't feature race leader Fernández.
Ruben kept gaining time on everything bar Dylan Teuns, who slowly crawled his way back to the Portuguese's wheel. A new impulse just before the top was enough to secure the stage even before the final descent.
Fernández finished far adrift from the other contenders and lost his jersey to Ruben.
1 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 3h25'28" | 2 | | Dylan Teuns | Lotto Soudal | + 8" | 3 | | Natnael Berhane | Team Total Direct Energie | + 1'35" | 4 | | Juan Chamorro | Team Total Direct Energie | s.t. | 5 | | Diego Ulissi | UAE-Team Emirates | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 17 | | Ruben Fernández | NTT Pro Cycling Team | + 3'19" |
Stage 5 | 120.6 kms
With the overall win all but secured and Barbero's mediocre form, we didn't chase the breakaway too hard on the final stage. We were totally fine with Jumbo-Visma's Wattimury beating Martinelli for the stage win.

Tour Colombia 2.1 (2.1)
Another race with a pretty modest field. We were looking at Martínez to compete in the sprints with Chávarri being our man for the overall.
Stage 1 | 153.7 kms
After a very fast ride on stage 1, our train never really managed to make it to the front. Martínez sprinted to 10th, far behind stage winner Kristian Sbaragli.
1 | | Kristian Sbaragli | Movistar Team | 3h18'25" | 2 | | Gert-Jan Bosman | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | | Dylan van Baarle | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 4 | | Milan Menten | Alpecin - Fenix | s.t. | 5 | | Nikias Arndt | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 10 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 2 | 141.4 kms
On day two, the punchers' teams could definitely hurt the sprinters. Sadly for them, we would bounce back perfectly after the stage 1 fiasco.
Against our proper expectations, Martínez climbed well enough to stay with the bunch on the cat.2 climb. Our promising sprinter kicked away powerfully on the final straight to bag his second ever stage win, and saw the other sprinters gather next to no points for that jersey.
1 | | Manuel Martínez | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 3h23'20 | 2 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 3 | | Rodrigo Contreras | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 4 | | Bauke Mollema | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 5 | | Michael Valgren | Team ColoQuick | s.t. |
Stage 3 | 39 km ITT
The time trial on day three hurt us like we knew it would. Martínez rode almost 7 minutes slower than Dowsett. On the other hand, Chávarri finished close to the other GC contenders.
1 | | Alex Dowsett | Team INEOS | 52'34" | 2 | | Nathan Brown | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 43" | 3 | | James McLaughlin | Team INEOS | + 48" | 4 | | Sjors Roosen | Team Sunweb | + 53" | 5 | | Tobias Ludvigsson | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 20 | | Nélson Oliveira | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 2'31" |
Stage 4 | 190 kms
The pretty bumpy finale of stage 4 proved too hard for Martínez, who failed to bag any points at the final sprint and lost the points jersey to Bosman. Lucio Pereiro finished just ahead of the pack after a long breakaway.
1 | | Lucio Pereiro | Massi Vivo - Conecta | 4h11'03" | 2 | | André Looij | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 3 | | Nikias Arndt | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 4 | | Kristian Sbaragli | Movistar Team | s.t. | 5 | | Marcel Franz | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 12 | | Ednaldo Luiz Cortes | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 5 | 143.7 kms
A strong group of GC contenders broke clear right away on the first mountain stage and no team was strong enough to do anything about it anymore.
Local hero Esteban Chaves beat George Bennett for the win while our leader finished way further down the field than he had hoped.
1 | | Esteban Chaves | Movistar Team | 4h13'35" | 2 | | George Bennett | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 3 | | Bernardo Suaza | Movistar Team | + 53" | 4 | | Winner Anacona | Team INEOS | + 1'30" | 5 | | Aidan van Niekerk | ProTouch | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 15 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 3'39" |
Stage 6 | 160.9 kms
In a final try to turn things around, Henao and Chávarri joined the break of the day on the final stage. The two of them didn't have the legs to play a major role today.
Rubén Fernández felt like a fish in the water on the very steep climbs and shook Gesink and Hansen in the final meters to win the stage.George Bennett gained just enough time on Chaves to secure the overall win.
Points jersey leader Bosman missed the time limit, which meant that Martínez finished one point short to win it himself.
1 | | Rubén Fernández | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 5h11'14" | 2 | | Bauke Mollema | Team Sunweb | s.t. | 3 | | Jesper Hansen | Team ColoQuick | s.t. | 4 | | Constantino Martínez | Team Illuminate | + 1'04" | 5 | | Peter Kennaugh | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 10 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 4'31" |

It was only a 2.1 race. Let the other teams peak early and beat them in the WT races.

176.5 kms | Vuelta a Murcia (1.1)
When José Luis Campos had to let go in the breakaway group, we decided to up the pace on the hillier stretch of the course.
Zardini ended up reducing the pack to about 10 riders. A few caught up on the descent but only they would fight for the win today.
Gallopin and Lunke attacked just before the last bump, forcing Verona to close a gap up the final, concrete road climb. But he handled it perfectly. Haig and Teuns couldn't match his pace, Gallopin cracked too and Lunke stranded in his wheel when Carlos launched his final sprint. It was his first win with our team.

184.2 kms | Clasica de Almería (1.Pro)
A few days later, we were not quite as succesful in the 1.Pro Clasica de Almería. Literally every breakaway attempt got neutralised due to the very high pace.
Despite reduced fitness, Barbero made it over the climbs but without support he lost his way when the sprint trains appeared. In the end Nacer Bouhanni's brother Rayane bagged his and CCC's first win of the season.

Vuelta a Andalucia (2.Pro)
Stage 1 | 6.7 km ITT
Former Portuguese champion Nelson Oliveira was by far our best man in the Almería prologue, but it just wasn't to be for him in the fight for the stage win.
González had already given him a scare when both Krigbaum and Eisenhart both rode faster than him. Top favorite Mullen eventually triumphed completing the course in exactly 9 minutes.
1 | | Ryan Mullen | Movistar Team | 9'00" | 2 | | Taylor Eisenhart | EF Education First Pro Team | + 1" | 3 | | Mathias Krigbaum | Lotto Soudal | s.t. | 4 | | Nelson Oliveira | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 9" | 5 | | Mario González | Movistar Team | + 10" |
Stage 2 | 182.6 kms
Eder Chávarri had exquisite legs on day two and couldn't hide it anymore on the last categorised climb. Herrada helped him get away from the pack and together they swept up the last man from the break. Eder hit the final two climbs alone.
Jan Hirt caught up on the last bump, yet none of the other riders could. The Czech was happy to finish in the same time, as Eder secured his first win of the year but remained 1" adrift of the GC lead.
1 | | Eder Chávarri | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | 4h46'41" | 2 | | Jan Hirt | Deceuninck - Quick Step | s.t. | 3 | | Fabio Aru | UAE-Team Emirates | + 46" | 4 | | Wilco Kelderman | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 5 | | Diego Rubio | Fundación - Orbea | s.t. |
Stage 3 | 191.7 kms
Stage 3 was the first chance for Eder to do something about the 1" deficit. Too bad he couldn't find the legs of day two to give it a try. He sat off the back of the main group all the way up to the hermitage of Virgen de la Sierra de Cabra.
A very generous jury gave him the same time as stage winner Kelderman and GC leader Hirt.

Stage 4 | 179.4 kms
With no bonus seconds at any of the sprints, stage four was a matter of staying out of trouble for us. CCC's powerful leadout for Lobato kept breakaway rider Fridtjof Røinas from winning the stage.
1 | | Juan José Lobato | CCC Team | 3h55'24" | 2 | | Christian Koch | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Mike Teunissen | Team Jumbo-Visma | s.t. | 4 | | Patryk Komisarek | CCC Team | s.t. | 5 | | Jacopo Guarnieri | Astana Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 5 | 159.1 kms
Eder did have a plan for the final stage, but the legs and bad positioning at the final bump decided otherwise. GC second was more than enough to accomplish our top 5 sponsor goal though.
Jesús Herrada was the strongest man of a breakaway trio but he got reeled in by the sprinters inside the last hectometers.

Volta ao Algarve (2.Pro)
Stage 1 | 205.7 kms
With no sprinter in our lineup, we didn't care too much about the flatter stages. We stayed out of trouble on day one as Moreno Hofland sprinted to the yellow leaders jersey. Pinheiral's 7th place grantd him the right to start in the white jersey on day two.
1 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education First Pro Team | 4h44'40" | 2 | | Alexey Kurbatov | Gazprom - Rusvelo | s.t. | 3 | | Sean De Bie | Circus - Wanty Gobert | s.t. | 4 | | Alex Kirsch | Alpecin - Fenix | s.t. | 5 | | Louis Verhelst | Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 7 | | Vitor Pinheiral | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 2 | 194.2 kms
Neo pro Luken Doncel joined the break on day two, but he couldn't do enough to take the KoM jersey and his group didn't stand a chance for the stage.
Despite Verona's late acceleration, Hofland made it two out of two.
1 | | Moreno Hofland | EF Education First Pro Team | 4h37'10" | 2 | | Jasper Stuyven | CCC Team | s.t. | 3 | | Anthony Roux | B&B Hotels - Vital Concept p/b KTM | s.t. | 4 | | Elia Favilli | EF Education First Pro Team | s.t. | 5 | | Jérôme Coppel | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 10 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 3 | 34.8 km ITT
Guerreiro had targeted the long time rial to gain time on his fellow GC men and despite a modest daily form, he managed to do so. Verona had a good day as well as he finished faster than Ruben.
1 | | Anton Vorobyev | Gazprom - Rusvelo | 50'24" | 2 | | Ruud Cremers | Circus - Wanty Gobert | + 13" | 3 | | Wilfried Köhler | CCC Team | + 40" | 4 | | Sean De Bie | Circus - Wanty Gobert | + 43" | 5 | | Jérôme Coppel | AG2R La Mondiale | + 44" | | ----- | | | | 6 | | Carlos Verona | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 46" | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 52" |
Stage 4 | 193.8 kms
Galtier was the only GC rider to try something ahead of the final climb on the annual Malhão stage.
Verona didn't have a good enough day to make up the time needed for a top GC result.
Guerreiro needed some time to work his way through a pack and past some riders from the break, but he started to open up a decisive gap after that.
Bystrom won the stage from the break as Ruben came third clear of all other GC men and grabbed the overall lead.
1 | | Sven Erik Bystrøm | CCC Team | 4h50'20" | 2 | | Jonathan Breyne | Sport Vlaanderen - Baloise | + 13" | 3 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 25" | 4 | | Joaquim Silva | W52 - FC Porto | + 36" | 5 | | Valérien Galtier | AG2R La Mondiale | s.t. |
Stage 5 | 95.1 kms
No reason for us to do much chasing on the last stage. Monti landed a prestigious win for the local L.A. Aluminios team while Ruben secured his second overall win of the year.

UAE Tour (2.UWT)
Stage 1 | 174.9 kms Stage 2 | 129 kms Stage 3 | 127.6 kms
No job but the stay safe for us on the flatter stages, as all our men for the flat were either training or preparing for Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
NTT did have a man eager to win again on a World Tour event. Coquard couldn't finish off his team's superb leadout on day one, but he would make up for that twice by winning the next two stages.
Stage 1
1 | | Logan Owen | Team INEOS | 3h46'21" | 2 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | | Marcel Franz | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. |
Stage 2
1 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 2h37'03" | 2 | | Logan Owen | Team INEOS | s.t. | 3 | | Sonny Colbrelli | Movistar Team | s.t. |
Stage 3
1 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 2h30'50" | 2 | | Sonny Colbrelli | Movistar Team | s.t. | 3 | | Mads Pedersen | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. |
Stage 4 | 205.1 kms
Coquard continued to do great on day four, which brought us the Hatta Dam stage. The race leader survived as the group kept getting thinned and ended up outsprinting the others with ease.
Ruben made the cut at first but the jury felt like he didn't keep up with the first group in the sprint.
1 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 4h36'11" | 2 | | Daniel Martin | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 3 | | Andrea Manfredi | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 4 | | Toms Skujins | Trek - Segafredo | s.t. | 5 | | Enrico Battaglin | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | | ----- | | | | 8 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 22" |
Stage 5 | 141.6 kms
Our own Francesc Palmero was the strongest escapee on the hilly fifth stage but the flat run into the line was too long to stay clear. Izagirre's late attack didn't keep Coquard from winning his fourth consecutive stage.
1 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | 3h19'23" | 2 | | Nacer Bouhanni | NTT Pro Cycling Team | s.t. | 3 | | Ion Izagirre | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. | 4 | | Christian Koch | CCC Team | s.t. | 5 | | Sondre Holst Enger | Astana Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 6 | 142.8 kms
Guerreiro had good legs again on the ____/ mountain stage to Jebel Hafeet, yet he was left stranded with the other favourites when Wellens launched a smartly timed attack. Guerreiro climbed to fourth in the overall standings.
1 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | 3h08'36" | 2 | | Andrea Manfredi | Bahrain - McLaren | + 53" | 3 | | Rodrigo Contreras | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 4 | | Adam Yates | Bahrain - McLaren | s.t. | 5 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | s.t. |
Stage 7 | 48.2 km ITT
The presence of some true specialists made for huge time on the conclusive time trial. Ruben rode faster than any of his closest rivals and set foot on the second step on the podium.
1 | | Lukas Meiler | Israel Start Up Nation | 1h03'11" | 2 | | Lasse Norman Hansen | Movistar Team | + 26" | 3 | | Victor Campenaerts | NTT Pro Cycling Team | + 1'16" | 4 | | Yoann Paillot | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 1'19" | 5 | | Fredrik Ludvigsson | CCC Team | + 1'30" | | ----- | | | | 14 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 3'06" | | ----- | | | | 19 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | + 3'45" |
UAE Tour 2021 Final overall standings 1 | | Tim Wellens | Lotto Soudal | 21h05'10" | 2 | | Ruben Guerreiro | Ruralvía-CCU Pro Team | + 46" | 3 | | Adam Yates | Bahrain - McLaren | + 2'15" | 4 | | Bryan Coquard | NTT Pro Cycling Team | + 3'21" | 5 | | Andrea Manfredi | Bahrain - McLaren | + 3'42" | 6 | | Patrick Konrad | BORA - hansgrohe | + 3'54" | 7 | | Daniel Martin | BORA - hansgrohe | + 4'00" | 8 | | Arthur Vichot | Cofidis, Solutions Crédits | + 4'01" | 9 | | Roman Kreuziger | Mitchelton-Scott | + 4'03" | 10 | | Dries Van Gestel | Deceuninck - Quick Step | + 4'05" |

He finally seems to have started winning instead of being consistently decent indeed! I usually struggle until the big March races so I do hope this year can be an exception. And Palmero could very well be turning into one of these Venezolan climbers who do well and have what it takes to win e.g. a Giro stage.
