More Racing & Illnesses
Hi everyone,
Willy here. I've been racing in Spain and in Italy (Trentino), but I didn't think it was necessary to keep daily updates about those races. Actually, Stijn passed some of that bacteria around the team and I've had a bit of a stomach flu during the Castilla Y Leon. Because of the great weather conditions, I finished the race and started in Trentino. There I got a bit better each day and finished 20th eventually. So it wasn't perfect but I feel I'm good on course for the Giro! My last preparation race has to be perfect, though! The Ardennes Classics have also been fought, and Daniel Martin fought like only an Irishman can fight!

 Vuelta a Asturias - Stage 1
Finally we're back to racing together again! Both coming over a bit of a flu, we're trying to get those last percentages for the Giro!
Stijn: My last race was Roubaix, which I didn't finish. I hope to get some work done today.
Willy: For this race per se I don't have too many goals. I hope to do well, of course, but the most important thing is getting ready for my main goal of 2015, Il Giro!

Zoricich, the Australian, went in the breakaway of the day, good for him!
However, over halfway the stage some dangerous riders escaped. We let them ride a bit, when they joined the first group and had over two minutes, I thought: time for my training. I dragged the peloton for about 30 kilometers. I feel pretty good.
On the final hill, my work took its toll. I didn't try too hard and took it easy. Maybe tomorrow I can win the sprint, looking at the field that's very possible!

Going over the hill, three of us got isolated at the front. Me, Tiernan-Locke and Capecchi.
I'm mainly here to build up form, not so much for a victory, so I told Tiernan-Locke I'd lead him out for the sprint. We could've attacked Capecchi one at the time, but he did some great work downhill and we decided to try it in the sprint.
My lead-out was pretty good, but I wasn't as explosive as usual, hope that will return for the Giro! Tiernan-Locke did his best but Capecchi was fast, hats off to him today.

A pretty good day. Now it's been a while since Roubaix, Stijn's gotten over it. He had a hard time for a while, but he still has a great career ahead of him. Though I (Willy) think some fans put too much pressure on him. They're talking about breaking records and writing history. It puts too much pressure on him. Winning the Ronde once would be an amazing achievement, let him try that first. Anyway, tomorrow he might make the sprint work!

Vuelta a Asturias - Stage 2
Stijn: Short and fast race. I'm going for the win!
Willy: Both Stijn and myself will be pulling out of the race after this stage, so it's one final training before the Giro. If, by some reason, I can start in my WC jersey instead of the Young Jersey at tomorrow's time trial, I will start though.

I was the final lead-out for Stijn, lacking a sprinter. I just pulled him towards the finish in a high gear!
Stijn Van Gent
My sprint was led out perfectly by Willy. If only he would do this at the Giro, too, but I can't ask him that!
I was a cut above the others in the sprint, logically. This was something I needed before going to the Giro, a win, good for morale!

Well, since Willy is obligated to start in the Young Jersey tomorrow instead of the WC jersey, we're both retiring, giving ourselves 5 more days before the Giro starts, which should suffice to come to peace and prepare for the big race!
This little race has done wonders for morale. Willy showed to be completely fit and working for Tiernan-Locke will give JTL the morale to do the same for Willy in the Giro. Stijn has been given a sprint victory on a silver platter and he took it. Giro d'Italia, here we come!
