The 5th stage in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya brings the riders from Ascó to Cabacés. The route is 194km long and features some hills, although not difficult enough to create some GC-changes.
20km to go
Our team works hard to keep the peloton together, so it lasts untill the 2nd KOTM-sprint that a rider is able (and allowed) to create a margin of more than 2 minutes. Red Bull's Michal Albasini is the one, and we control the gap, as he is 5'38 behind in the GC.
With just 20km to go, Albasini has a lead of 3 minutes to a group of 3 with Christophe Le Mével (Garmin), Javier Moreno (Caja Rural) and Miguel Rubiano (Radio Shack), and 4'30 to the peloton.
Finish
Albasini has no big problems and wins the stage. He give sthe newly formed Red Bull - Cervélo team the biggest win so far. Le Mével wins the sprint for the 2nd place at 1'58, whileKelderman finishes in 5th after winning the sprint of the peloton (well, sprint... nobody actually sprinted...).
I forgot to took a screenshot of the finish...

A good day at the office for us! One stage 1 down, 2 to go!
Dwars Door Vlaanderen is the traditional start of the Flamish Cycling Week, followed by Gent-Wevelgem, Driedaagse De Panne - Koksijde and of course De Ronde Van Vlaanderen. It's the 68th edition, and last year the race was won by an outstanding Tom Boonen.
The route
After the start in Roeselaere, the riders start with a flat first part, before facing the first hill (Nieuwe Kwaremont) after 87 kilometres. After 13 hills, with the Oude Kwaremont and the Paterberg, as the most difficut ones, and 3 cobbles sections, the finish awaits after 201 kilometres in Waregem.

The favourites
Tom Boonen (Sony Ericsson), Matti Breschel, Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky).
Johan Vansummeren (Garmin), Jürgen Roelandts (Sony Ericsson), Niki Terpstra.
Greg Van Avermaet (Sony Ericsson), Martijn Maaskant, Sylvain Chavanel (Garmin).
110km to go
Our tactic for today is to be present in the BOTD. After a few attempts, Sep Vanmarcke is the one who succeeds in doing it. Along with 11 other breakaways, he as arrives in the hill zone, with the Nieuwe Kwaremont being the first one. Unfortunately, the other members of the breakaway are weak cobblers, as Arnold Jeannesson and Kevin Seeldraeyers.
59km to go
Even though the BOTD gets a maximum margin of 7 minutes, that margin is melting like snow in the sun, thanks to the low pace. Not being happy with a long solo in prospect, Vanmarcke decides to wait for the peloton, and thus helping his team leaders. Climbing the Eikenberg, only 48 riders are present in the first peloton, with all the big guns present.
36km to go
The first peloton shrinks even more at every single climb. Despite of the fact that no attacks occur, only 32 riders are in the first group climbing the Oude Kwaremont.
30km to go
The race keeps being kinda boring, as also in the ascend of the cobbled Paterberg, with gradients up to 20%, there are no attacks. But again, 5 riders can't follow the pace, so only 27 left.
27km to go
It takes a flat part to let a rider attack! It's last year's winner Tom Boonen who does it. None of the other riders (21) counter, and we take over the lead of the peloton, chasing Tommeke.
16km to go
It takes 11 kilometres, before Boonen gets caught. At this moment, climbing the Vossenhol, Juan Antonio Flecha is the next one to attack.
4km to go
Both Monster Energy and Sony Ericsson work together to catch Flecha, as both teams have faith in thier sprinters. But with 4km to go, when Flecha is about to get caught, Johan Vansummeren attacks, looking to profit form the hard work done by his opponents.
Finish
Vansummeren quickly creates a gap of 30 seconds, and Sony Ericsson is forming a sprint train in the chasing group. We have to let go, as the riders have become to empty.
But Vansummeren can't be caught and wins Dwars Door Vlaanderen. Tom Boonen sprints to the 2nd place, followed by Steve Chainel (FDJ), Jürgen Roelandts (Sony Ericsson) and Matti Breschel.

Word from the DS
The team play went very well, untill the last 5 kilometres. Than they ran out of energy. So a 5th place isn't what we hoped for, but are satisfied with it.

The 6th and penultimate stage in this Volta Ciclista a Catalunya is the last hilly stage, thus the last chance for the GC-contenders to threaten the leaders jersey. Nevertheless, with the hills pretty far before the finish, it's unlikely that the GC will be changed after the stage.
40km to go
The story of the stage is the same as in the previous 2 ones. A BOTD is allowed to take a margin of several minutes, and the peloton (well, our team) isn't interested in catching them.
So at the last climb of the day, with 40km to go, the 7 (Artem Ovechkin (Katusha), Miguel Rubiano (Radio Shack), Arthur Vichot (FDJ), Florian Stalder (Red Bull), Gavin Mannion (Sony Ericxxon), Daniele Colli (Liquigas) and BMCs Brent Bookwalter) have a margin of 4'29 to the peloton.
8km to go
The peloton (that is Monster Energy - Subway, as no other team is interested in working a bit...) isn't interested in the stage win, so the margin of the 7 leaders increases to 5'42.
Brent Bookwalter can't control his nerves, or know that an attack is the only way he can win this stage, and attacks with 8km to go.
Finish
And of course Bookwalter doesn't make it to the finish. He's one of those riders that always attacks, but never gets rewarded for it...
The win goes to a French rider, again... It's the year of the French riders and teams so far, as Arthur Vichot takes the win, beating Miguel Rubiano and Daniele Colli.
The peloton finishes at 4'06, with the GC-lead of Kelderman (who finishes in 12th) never being in danger all stage long.

Word from the DS
With our opponents not attacking, they make it pretty easy for us to defend the GC-lead for Kelderman. One more stage to go!
The last stage in this Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, and only 171 kilometres from Sant Cugat del Valles to Montmeló stand between Wilco Kelderman and his first ever World Tour-stage race win!
70km to go
6 riders are the climbing the Montjuïc, the hill and park just outside the centre of Barcelona with the '92 Olympic stadium in it, with a margin of 2'17 over the peloton. Sébastien Joly (Garmin), Anthony Roux (FDJ), Ángel Madrazo (Movistar), Jos van Emden (Rabobank) and Victor Reynes (Lotto) form a very strong breakaway. Bad for them is the presence of Madrazo, who is only 4'18 behind in the GC.
15km to go
Finally, the Monster Energy - Subway riders receive some help from an other team. The riders form Lampre help in the chase. The only reason they do this must be aiming for a sprint win with Giacomo Nizzolo.
Anyway, thanks to the Lampre boys, the margin to the leading 6 has been decreases to 1'05, so the GC-win must be safe now.
Finish
But with 13km to go, Nizzolo suffers a puncture, and all the Lampre-boys disappear again. As a result, the pace drops, so the 6 stay out of reach.
Anthony Roux is looking to sprint to another FDJ-win, but he gets passed in the final metres by Lotto's Spanish rider Vicente Reynes, his first win in over 2 years time. Roux finishes in 2nd, and Jos van Emden in 3rd.
2'13 behind Reynes, Wilco Kelderman crosses the line and wins the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya! A fantastic result, after the 2nd place in the Tirreno!

Overall winner
Word from the DS
What a great win for Kelderman, only 22 years old! He's for sure the future Dutch Tour de France-winner!!
But what a strange Volta a Catalunya we have seen.... All 7 stages were won by a breakaway! And the GC was decided in the stage with the finish at the Vallnord. After that, there were no serious attacks to take over the GC-lead. Well, maybe no one could do this!
Now Kelderman gets a month of rest, before the Tour de Romandie and the Giro, were he'll be a luxury domestique for Robert Gesink.
Back to Belgium for the cobbles. The second one, 3 days after Dwars Door Vlaanderen, is the E3-Prijs Harelbeke. The 56th edition and record holder is Tom Boonen, who took his 5th win last year, and got kissed by the most beautiful podium girl ever!
The route
The route is 200 kilometres long, and features some tough climbs in the Flamish Ardennes, as the Taaienberg, Paterberg and the Oude Kwaremont. With these hills, the race is the ultimate preparation race for the Ronde van Vlaanderen, 8 days after.

67km to go
13 riders have gone in the early attack, knowing that they are absolutely worthless cobbled riders, so they won't have any chance for glory today. Among these world famous cobblers, are riders as Johannes Fröhlinger (M&M's), Robin Chalapud (Differdange) and Tom Zirbel (Livestrong), who are only aiming for airtime today. Climbing the Eikenberg, they have a margin of 3'08 to the peloton.
41km to go
With these weak cobblers in front, the peloton takes it pretty easy. Because of this, the race direction also falls asleep, as one of their cars gets stuck in the ascend of the Paterberg, so the first peloton of 60 riders almost have to get off their bikes.
37km to go
The peloton catches the BOTD at the foot of the Oude Kwaremont and again, the car of the race director is in the way....
21km to go
The first 2 riders to awake, are Johan Vansummeren and Tom Boonen, who attack out of a 23-man big first group. Of course, this attack causes a chain of reactions, but as we have many riders in the first group, we decide to trust in the sprinting abilities of Matti Breschel and hunt everybody down.
5km to go
With 5km to go, we realize that we made the wrong choice. With attacking riders all over the place, we have lost overview of the race-situation and fins ourselves to far behind.
The situation is as following: A group with Boonen, Vansummeren, Chainel, Hushovd and Chavanel is in the lead, at '18 followed by a group with Gilbert, Flecha, Leukemans, Roelandts and Offredo. A third group including all our riders and Boom, Goss, and Quinziato follows at '48.
Finish
The first 2 groups emerge shortly before the finish and it is Tom Boonen who takes the win, easily winning the sprint. It's the 6th win the E3 for Tommeke, and hopefully for him, the organisation as a different podium girl this year.
Steve Chainel sprints to a surprising 2nd place, with Juan Antonio Flecha in 3rd. Matti Breschel manages to sprint to the 9th place.

Word from the DS
Tactical mistake. That's the only thing we can say about today. With riders still having energy left, some had to counter the attacks, instead of relying on the sprint abilities by Breschel.
Today, the 75th edition of Gent - Wevelgem, one of the 3 cobbled World Tour races, takes place. Who will be the successor of Sky's Juan Antonio Flecha, last years winner. For sure, the organisation hopes for a Belgium rider to win, to colour this anniversary edition.
The route
After the start in Deinze, south of Gent, the race will ride towards the North Sea-coast. When they reach Oostende, they turn to the south along the coast. It takes about 130 kilometres before the riders have to climb the 1st hill. After 2 laps in the hilly zone, with twice the Kemmelberg as the most difficult obstacle, about 35 flat kilometres await towards the finish in Wevelgem.
The favourites
The question always is in Gent - Wevelgem, if the cobbled riders are able to arrive in Wevelgem alone or in a selected group, or that the peloton catches them and it becomes a mass sprint.
Tom Boonen (Sony Ericsson), Matti Breschel, Philippe Gilbert (Lotto).
Fabian Cancellara (Saxo Bank), Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky), Johan Vansummeren (Garmin).
Sylvain Chavanel (Garmin), Niki Terpstra, Heinrich Haussler (Rabobank).
97km to go
We decide to change our tactics today and sent Sep Vanmarcke in the BOTD. He arrives at the Mont des Cats, the first real hill of the day, with 9 fellow adventurous souls, and as usual, those are 100% non-cobblers. Everybody keeps surprised that riders as Emanuelle Sella (Lampre), Mikel Nieve (Astana), Tiago Machado (Radio Shack) and Juanma Garaté (Euskaltel). The 10 have a margin of 6 minutes to the peloton.
78km to go Vanmarcke is by far the best cobbler in this BOTD (not that difficult, none of the others has a Co-stat above 60 ), and drops the others in the first ascend of the Kemmelberg. Th epeloton is still 6 minutes behind.
Our Belgian rider decides to wait for the others, as they can help him in the short flat part towards the next section of climbs.
37km to go
Climbing the Baneberg, with about 50km to go, Vanmarcke realizes he is better off without his 9 breakaway-buddies and drops them. He arrives at the Kemmelberg for the 2nd ascend with a lead of 1'55 to the first peloton, consisting of 55 riders. The domestiques of Tom Boonen are leading the peloton.
33km to go
The peloton breaks in a few echelons after the descend of the Kemmel on the flat roads toward Wevelgem. All our riders are present in the first group of 14, with still the Sony - Ericsson guys doing the pace. With Vanmarcke still 1'56 in front of this group, we won't help them.
A 2nd group with Cancellara, Gilbert, Haussler, Vansummeren, Ballan, Flecha and Farrar, follows '26 behind the first group and has a higher pace. After a few kilometres, they're able to close the gap, so 25 riders are in the chase.
10km to go
With the finish in Wevelgem coming closer, Vanmarcke is struggling more and more. Being in the attack for about 175 kilometres, he's running out of energy. With 10km to go, he's leading the first peloton with 1'08.
The first rider to attack is Garmin's Sylvain Chavanel, and he's closing the gap quickly.
4km to go
Chavanel joins Vanmarcke with less than 5km to go and makes an enormous mistake. He believes that their margin to the chasing group is big enough and decides to rest for a short time...
2km to go
And with 2km to go, the 2 are passed by an outraging Philippe Gilbert! Oh my, big mistake by the French rider, and it looks like he won't close the gap to Gilbert.
Finish
It's the first win of the year for the reigning world champion! He looks to be in shape at the right time before the important spring classics. Chavanel finishes in 2nd place and almost smashes his steer after the finish. Tom Boonen finishes in 3rd place, despite all the hard work by his team, and Matti Breschel in 4th.
And poor Vanmarcke? Completely wasted in 15th place...

Word from the DS
I really feel sorry for Sep Vanmarcke, who did an excellent job in the long attack. Too bad, the race was 5 km too long...
The team result was great, with 3 in the top 10 (Breschel 4th, Vermeltfoort 7th and Maaskant 10th) and 2 more in the top 15 (Terpstra 12th and Vanmarcke 15th). Sadly we missed the podium, but this for sure was a improval after the E3-Prijs. First the Driedaagse De Panne - Koksijde, and then De Ronde!
Team Monster Energy - Subway is proud to announce the signing of 2 very talented Austrian riders. As we want to go more International, the team has decided to look beyond the Benelux. Both riders will become a trainee at August 1st, and get the chance to earn a contract.
First rider is Jacob Babbel, a 19-year-old puncheur. He's a great hilly rider (Potent 81!) and downhiller, but has especially to improve his stamina, sprint and flat skills.
The second rider is Patrick Reiter. He's also 19 years old, and his speciality is sprinting. He see a future for him in sprints after more difficult terrain, considering his hilly stats.
We wish them both good luck in the last months of the season!
