Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) ![i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png](https://i.imgur.com/zMBJxFz.png) Stage 4/5, 156.2 kms
Another typical flat stage with a short uphill finish. Last chance for the puncheurs and sprinters, as tomorrow's outcome is very likely to be decisive for the overall standings.
Five riders were given a little playing time in front of the peloton. With no KoM points up for grabs along the route, they could only hope their move would make it to the line.
It didn't. Long before the bumpy finish, which was a climb to the ancient Roman city of Clunia, the group was caught. At the foot of said climb, our men sat too far back already. They could only watch how points leader Carlos Verona launched from the very foot.
The Spaniard, who we managed to sign for next season, is just on fire. Nobody came even close to catching up again. He's also still got a shot at winning the race tomorrow. So do we with Izagirre who continues to sit in GC 3rd, just a few seconds from the current leader Noria.

Stage 6/7, 191.5 kms in pictures
From a four-man breakaway with Seba Henao, BMC's Nathan Brown went on to challenge for the stage win. It must have been a major bummer for him to be passed by GC 2nd Rob Power with just tens of meters to go. The white jersey gained enough time on his fellow contenders to move into the yellow jersey ahead of the conclusive time trial.
Guerreiro had to let go near the end, which caused him to lose any hope of making the GC top 10. The time trial could let us learn if his form has gotten any better of the last week. Tour de Pologne 2020Upcoming sttage 7

Fingers crossed for Ion in Burgos! Pity that Henao couldn't stay with the other escapees in Poland, but good on Ruben, eventhough his overall place didn't improve, maybe his confidence did a little (but did you post that stage twice on purpose?).

Very much looking forward to that Burgos queen stage indeed. Ruben's becoming better, I hope this won't beat him down as it's his penultimate race ahead of his Vuelta captain role. (Didn't post the stage twice on purpose though, I messed up my stage reports, will edit stage 6 into the previous post later on ).

Vuelta a Burgos (2.HC) ![i.imgur.com/xFpGiMO.png](https://i.imgur.com/xFpGiMO.png) Stage 5/5, 145.6 kms
Time for the annual Lagunas de Neila queen stage in Burgos. The still small time gaps at the very top could make for a very interesting conclusion of this year's edition.
Eder Chávarri, who's been unlucky in terms of the GC, joined the big BOTD of twelve. Jarlinson Pantano was his best-known companion.
It wasn't until Pasil de Rozavientos, the first cat.1 climb, that Eder came to the fore. By then the group was down to four men, with Parrinello about to lose contact as well.
Chávarri, Pantano, Le Gac had their lead at 3'40" at the foot of the final climb. They were looking good for the stage win.
Le Gac had to let go early on. Past the steepest slopes, Pantano cracked too. Eder was very close to another one of his signature breakaway wins.
Victor Lafay attacked from a select GC group, where Ion Izagirre overcame a short slump as he kept sitting at the very back. Vandenborre was in the mix too and so were race leader Noria and Verona.
Chávarri resisted the comeback of a raging Lafay, and won the stage by just 16". He both breached the GC top 10 and won the mountain jersey.
A sharp final sprint and Vandenborre sitting up made Izagirre gain time on Noria and pass him in the overall standings. Sadly, Lafay's gap was so big he'd pass everyone to win the 2020 Vuelta a Burgos by 20 seconds.

Funny to see Lafay so strong. I have him with Cofidis and he's very, very far away from performances like that but I wouldn't mind him getting there.
Unfortunate for Ion that he missed the overall win, but all things considered a very good race for the team, I'd say. Two stage wins, mountain jersey, 2nd and 7th overall - pretty nice!

A very good race all in all, yet once again we struggle to actually bag a GC win.
As for Lafay, a very deserved overall win if you put almost 2' into the others. It's this kind of performances Deceuninck have signed him for. Fingers crossed he will perform like this for you in the future. ![Smile](../images/smiley/smile.gif)
The list of breakaway wins keeps getting longer. Tour of Austria, Volta a Portugal and Ruta del Sol at first, two Vuelta stages, two TDF stages and now a Burgos stage... Not quite like Thomas De Gendt yet, but he might be getting there. ![Pfft](../images/smiley/pfft.gif)
And a loss is always (a little) easier to swallow when the opponent is just stronger too.

Tour de Pologne (2.UWT) ![i.imgur.com/7djCDDF.png](https://i.imgur.com/7djCDDF.png) Stage 7/7, 37.7 km ITT
As we hadn't been in the mix on practically every stage, expectations weren't too high for this conclusive time trial in and around Krakow.
Costa Rican champion Cerezo clearly felt the fatigue after the tough previous stages that didn't suit him at all. He couldn't maintain his usual pace and as other riders started to cross the line, he kept dropping on the timetable to an eventual 26th place.
Guerreiro had a very unfortunate race with a modest form to start in the first place and a crash later. His performance today though was encouraging, as he only narrowly missed the day's top 10.
Adam Yates beat yellow jersey Rob Power by 17", which wasn't good enough to win the race. It's Rob Power's biggest overall win so far.

Eneco Tour (2.UWT)
Stage 1 :: 5.8 kms![i.imgur.com/vS1VIbN.png](https://i.imgur.com/vS1VIbN.png)
The 5.8 km prologue in Mook had a short bump just after the start. Our first starter Oliveira had the best time when he crossed the line, but he quickly started to slip down the standings.
Cortes and Cerezo, our other two contenders for a good stage finish, both couldn't match the pace of the day's best. Cerezo became our top finisher in 21st place, only 4" outside the top 10 though.

Stage 2 :: 207.7 kms
Stage two took the riders from Beek to Coevorden over an almost entirely flat course.
A strong breakaway trio with Van Avermaet, Böger and Van Hooydonck wasn't caught until the last five kilometers. Our three-man train had a gap at some point but lost the momentum when our last man had to close a gap to keep up.
Sunweb's train took over from ours and delivered Kittel perfectly. The German won by a just ridiculous margin.

Stage 3 :: 195.3 kms
More of the same on stage 3, even if the final third was very slightly undulated.
Drücker, Lature and Senechal lasted just as long as the escapees had on stage two. Sunweb controlled the pace on the remaining kms, after which Demare left everyone else in the dust on the uphill sprint finish.
1 | ![](../images//flags/FR.png) | Arnaud Demare | Team Sunweb | 4h11'46" | 2 | ![](../images//flags/IE.png) | Sam Bennett | Groupama - FDJ | s.t. | 3 | ![](../images//flags/AU.png) | Caleb Ewan | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 4 | ![](../images//flags/NL.png) | Moreno Hofland | Team Katusha - Alpecin | s.t. | 5 | ![](../images//flags/SK.png) | Peter Sagan | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 6 | ![](../images//flags/CO.png) | Fernando Gaviria | Movistar Team | s.t. | 7 | ![](../images//flags/AU.png) | Michael Matthews | Team Dimension Data | s.t. | 8 | ![](../images//flags/DK.png) | Magnus Cort Nielsen | BORA - hansgrohe | s.t. | 9 | ![](../images//flags/GB.png) | Mark Cavendish | Team INEOS | s.t. | 10 | ![](../images//flags/NL.png) | Wouter Wippert | Movistar Team | s.t. |
Stage 4 :: 202 kms
First key stage for the overall came on day 4, with a ride from Eindhoven into the Ardennes and a finish on Mur de Huy.
GC 6th Van Hooydonck was allowed to join the breakaway and acted as its main engine all day long. He couldn't help but notice the gap being just 2'45" at the start of the bumpier zone.
Bahrain and Total made sure everything came back together inside the last 10 kilometers. Just Oliveira and Cortes had survived in the vast peloton of still 80 riders.
Oliveira sacrificed his own chances for our Brazilian youngster, who sat in 15th position near the foot of the last Huy ascent. It was all about damage control from there.
Michael Matthews set the pace from the foot and it was one nobody could follow. He could also count on his sprint to put time into everyone but Sagan and Coquard.
Cortes did great to secure 14th, and is our only remaining asset in the GC standings.

Eneco Tour (2.UWT)
Stage 5 :: 17.8 kms![i.imgur.com/1bE9XOU.png](https://i.imgur.com/1bE9XOU.png)
The time trial was a great chance for Cortes to move closer to the top 10. At least, that's the way we saw it before the actual racing.
Cerezo had the fifth time when he crossed the line, but the stage favourites were yet to leave the ramp then. Just like him, Oliveira would drop down the standings once the big guns started to arrive.
Cortes' performance was mediocre at best, resulting in him losing a few more places in the overall. He did keep the young jersey within reach though - 5".

Stage 6 :: 183 kms
Federico Zurlo joined the breakaway on stage 6, along with Vanmarcke and Archbold, and got dropped from it eventually.
The pace in the breakaway wasn't high enough to survive. We weren't involved in the subsequent bunch sprint. Kittel pulled off a great leadout for Demare, who resisted Stuyven's comeback to land his second stage win.
And thanks to Köhler's bad day, Cortes moved into the green jersey of the U25 leader.

Stage 7 :: 202.4 kms
Last but not least, the Flandrien stage. As it's often the case, several famous hellingen are to be conquered ahead of the stage finish on De Vesten in Geraardsbergen.
Nelson Oliveira had a spot in the big breakaway group of 15 riders. During the penultimate passage on the Muur, he felt he had to do something about the shrinking time gap; 1'40" with still 28 kms to the line.
At the same time, Zurlo was involved in a crash with race leader Matthews, who suddenly sat 1'15" adrift of the main group.
Nelson's move on the Muur caused the split in his group, after which Klaris and Van Keirsbulck attacked from it.
Cortes had used the Muur to go clear of the GC group, backed by Angel Cerezo. Both were swept up again before the last ascent of the Muur though.
Klaris and Van Keirsbulck were also caught by the closest chasers. Oliveira was ready to play his card on the cobbled climb but he got boxed in.
As a result, it was Klaris who rode away again. Mainly thanks to Lukas Spengler's efforts, a group of five would sprint for the stage win, and the gap even looked promising for a good GC position...
Jenthe Biermans was the strongest of the five, claimed the u25 jersey and even put time into all other riders. Nelson's always lacked a sharp sprint and had to settle for fifth place.
Cortes finished close to Matthews, who had managed to get back to a GC group that only Sagan put some time into. With the promising gap, the overall could still go to one of the escapees...

Fantastic result by Nelson! Normally, six seconds behind the race lead is a bit unfortunate, but I think under these circumstances, it's still terrific. And good for Cortes wearing the young riders jersey, even if only for one day!

Really saved our race with that ride, and this is only our 3rd ever GC podium in a World Tour race! Cortes came 6th here last year, but this edition had a too tough Ardennes stage I think, and bad legs cost him in the time trial too.

Unfortunately not. ![Smile](../images/smiley/smile.gif)
Had a quick look in the file I keep track of all results in, and we have won Mallorca (2), Sibiu, Ruta del Sol, Turkey, Languedoc-Roussillon, Castilla y Leon, Austria and ATOC over the years. Best World Tour GC results can be found in the first post btw. ![Wink](../images/smiley/wink.gif)
Grande Nélson!
