4 new recruits, but not all with their real names. Put in the miles (or kilometres), guys.
I can't figure out who lives in Madrid though. He seems to ride a bit though.

I need to sort everything out first Aqua. And I wont exactly be racking up the kilometres. Might go for a 10k ride at least once this week. Im only 15 and the roads in my area arent cycle friendly due to a speed limit of 80/100, bad bends and corners, quite a bit of rain and people who almost dont care about cyclists.

Since I'm waiting for the fog to leave and the roads to dry before going out cycling, and since it's Winter in Europe, let's write down a few thoughts about what I saw on Strava when people use their home trainers.

I'm quite amazed that most, either among people I'm following, either in the groups I belong to, more or less simply start pedalling, and pedal 30, 40, 60 minutes at more or less a constant speed and cadence, and do nothing else. Sometimes they add one or two short sprints and that's it. I understand they find it's dull. Doing that is better than nothing, but... barely. I don't mean to sound patronizing, but : how clueless it is !

Reading Fred Grappe's book, and from my little experience I fully agree with him on that : a home trainer is an absolute necessity for a cyclist with ambitions, assuming it's properly used. You can set the difficulty and your pedalling speed more or less at will depending on what you intend to do. And an hour on the thing is worth almost two on the road.

For those following what I do on that hellish device, you might have read I bonked twice in two days and couldn't finish the exercises I was intending to do. Oddly enough, despite using the same tyre pressure (very important), gears, difficulty level and RPM as three days ago, I totally blew up yesterday, trying to do a Gimenez exercise (I've written about that one several times), the most efficient model for VO2max and threshold development.
After further analyse of my data, and reading of Grappe's book it appears my 4 minutes of counter-exercises at sustained intensity (I3) were too intense (about 12 % less than my exercise intensity (I5), when it should be closer to 30 %). The heart beat difference between the end of an exercise and a counter-exercise barely exceeded 3 bpm when the normal ranges for that are 4-10 bpm for an elite athlete, 10-20 for a trained athlete, and 20-30 for a non-trained one.
The heartbeat at the end of each one minute exercise evolves like a logarithm function, and should be around 98 % of the max after the ninth and last repetition. I had that one about fine.
It's quite complicated to find the proper intensities for that one. According to Grappe's book and to my miserable recent experience, 5 % of power too much means exhaustion between the 25th and the 35th minutes of exercise (5th to 7th repetition, the full exercise is 9 repetitions).

I occationaly use the home trainer for doing a recovery ride when it is raining heavily or there is strong winds and it would be hard to do a recovery ride on the roads. In that case i would do 1-2 hours at a slow constant speed but apart from that i agree with you. The home trainer is so useful that it would be pointless to not use it properly.

Well, my nick is Muddy Biker Peasant Shonak so no mix-ups hopefully. Wink
Since I don't have my smartphone yet (I expect it tomorrow or by the latest on wednesday), I actually went to a friends place earlier today and wanted to use Strava Running on her phone for a "testrun"... We spent like half an hour at the computer until we realized that her smartphone didn't support GPS. Rolling Eyes It kinda makes me even more excited to use it though, might even get Instagram to snatch pretty, heavily photoshopped pictures. Grin

Can't say much about home trainer though. I rarely use one since I don't like pedaling on the same spot. If I use it, I think I use programmes though that change in like 2'-5' intervals its watts. Riding the same speed all the time for like two hours, I'd probably fall asleep on the bike or dead to the floor, depending on the effort. Wink

So, I found Strava can be used for other activities than cycling and running. Apparently I run faster than I ski...
https://www.strava.com/activities/1074.../107411495
How hard can it be?

Dippofix
I will actually try that the next time i'm skiing with the club. Smile
I'm not skiing in my home country though, so would it still work or would i need a sim from there?

With Strava
1- Do you only need gps and the app for it? (no internet?)
2- Does it work EVERYWHERE in the world?

Aquarius
1) Yes (but to upload it to internet, of course you need to be connected, but you can still upload hours or days later)
2) Yes, as long as there's satellite coverage (not underground and not really inside buildings, etc.)

Luis Leon Sanchez
Ok thanks.
So can you list everything that it gives you. Distance, average speed..?

Just found strava, will try to find some time to cycle.
I only do big rides in the summer hollidays, rest of the year I row to much Pfft

The phone app records your position and the time of the day. It also displays your speed and average speed, but you're not supposed to look at your phone while riding. You launch the app, start the recording, put the phone on sleep mode, ride, get the phone out of sleep mode, stop the recording and upload to internet, that's all you have to do.
It auto-pauses, by the way, so it'll give you both the moving time and the total time.

Then the website provides further analyze. By connecting all the dots it determines a route, and, of course, a distance, plus the total ascent and descent. By matching the distance to the time of the day it determines a duration then a speed.
With all that plus your weight and your equipment weight ("bike" weight should mean bike + equipment), it determines an average power.
Whenever you ride on a segment, it'll do the same, but specifically for that segment. Plus it'll show you a leaderboard with everyone's best time.

For power. Do you need tonter the weight yourself? And does it matter if you do not bother with it?

On Strava? If you enter your weight and in the bike settings part enter bike weight then when you record a ride it will calculate your wattages.

I need to adjust my settings a little as I forgot all about equipment aswell when doing my bike settings a while back.
Huge week from Lucus in our PCM club. 600 k's is just a massive effort! Also good to see more of us signing up

So from 40 degree heat to 20 degrees and rain. Australia....

https://www.strava.../107628124 Very happy with my ride yesterday. Found some nice climbs l have never done before.

One included 2.8km at 4 %, with just under half of it being near 6%. Don't really have the gears for climbing, so it is a bit of a struggle, but nice to see lm improving.

ianrussell
The most useful thing I got from Strava initially was using the segment explore to find some local climbs I'd previously missed.

Luis Leon Sanchez
Will be going for a few rides before Saturday.
