Strava has a "my routes" features now, it's far from perfect but I use it regularly.
Bikely used to be my choice before Strava got that feature. |

I've used bikehike and now Strava too. I think a lot of the sites are playing up at the moment as a result of their link to Google maps which is being updated/changed?
Also weather forecast says no rain for few days \o/ |

Since I'm getting a smartphone rather soon, which has a GPS feature, I was thinking about making a Strava account too. How good goes this combination together; smartphone & Strava? Can a smartphone do the job or does it cause more problems along the way? Any things to keep in mind, like for protection of the phone (never had a smarty phone before)?

It depends on what phone you get. If you have some rather cheap LG like me (with which i once knocked a hole in to the wall of my bedroom ) it shouldn't be a probleme, or at least mine has survived the odd crash with out any apparent problems. However if you get say an iPhone, i'd be careful with it, since they're dear, and break rather easily. Then i think i'd just get a cheap GPS thing, that you wouldn't miss too much if it broke in a fall or so.

Thanks mate. I'm actually getting a rather cheap LG-...something, so it's good to know that they presumably can survive if I crash with the bike or harsh weather conditions like rain on it. But I probably should still get something to cover the phone, now that I think about it.

I used Strava with an iPhone for a while, plus a Polar HR watch, but I was fed up with my inability to have both data together, so I bought a GPS with cadence and HR monitor. A better choice for training purposes.
That being said, if you're not looking for maximal precision, the phone app will work fine for cycling, a little less for running (unless you use the last iPhone which has an accelerometer included, at least one that's being used by the Strava app). The app records a point every once in a while, when it "thinks" it's necessary, which might be every 3 to 6 or 7 seconds, whereas on a Garmin GPS you can force it to record data every second.
I'm quite a clumsy guy (what I hold in my hand is generally something that's going to fall on the floor), but I'm yet to break my phone. There's nothing special to do, just keep it in your pocket (and before you ask, you don't need to keep the phone "on", put it on sleep mode while you ride, once you've launched the app). There's one thing that worries me a bit though, it's rainy conditions. Either you'll be soaked by the rain, and so will your phone, either you'll use proper rain clothes but will sweat hard and... soak your phone. It happens to me every time I wear a Gabba rain jacket for example. It doesn't seem to have affected the phone's health though.
There's only once when I thought I might have broken it, it's when I fell last March. I somehow fell on my back, on the phone's side, but I guess I turned enough while falling, and the phone didn't get anything (unlike my helmet that broke).
Good thing with iPhones and Strava is that they are apparently compliant with some Polar heart monitors through bluetooth protocol.
And join us on Strava. |

I must say I'm confused by all the names in our group. There's barely half of them that I could relate to a PCM.Daily nickname. |

Yeah it seems to be a google issue.
Thanks for the advice guys, will have a trawl through those. I thought Strava was just a smartphone thing, will have a gander then. |

Thanks Aquarius. It's one of my main concerns that the phone will get soaked in, either by rain or sweat, and that it doesn't work anymore. I guess I'll buy something like a leather case or maybe even a sportive... bracelet? for the phone. Since I never cared much about heartrate or so, I don't really want or need to have a special GPS/HR Monitor-combined. I just imagine it will be fun to see what kind of rides I stack up over time and Strava seems like the most complete package.
I hadn't planned on using the phone for running since I really hate to have anything with me whilst running (even my keys). Plus I run the same distance everytime so there's not much changing... hm, maybe I'll pick up one of these things though... They look awful though... bit douchebaggish too, but they could come in handy for cycling too.

@shonak you can also get waterproof bike mounts for various smartphones too from Amazon etc. I happily used one of those for 4 months before getting a Garmin, can be a bit cumbersome but do the trick. |

I thought about those too but I think I'd find it rather annoying since I don't like to have (too much) stuff on my bike bars. It's a bit of a quirk I guess.

Bushwackers (took me some serious forum browsing to find it back). Not sure whether he'll be pleased to read his full name here though.
I wouldn't want people googling my name to land here.
