Jumbo screwed up the tactics today and instead of a mass sprint to settle the win, we saw four later attackers making it to the finish line. This might fuel a certain tension between Groenewegen and the team even more.

It was QuickStep's Remco Evenepoel who crossed the finish line in first place, while to make Jumbo's embarrassment even bigger, Groenewegen even failed to win the sprint behind for the fifth place. A day to forget for the Dutch rider.

Given the situation, Van Aert did all he could in the final. Strong performance anyway. And exuce me, I actually cheered when I saw Evenepoel won Wink
Groenewegen can't be happy with how the race unfolded.

A lot of talents exploded progression wise. It looks like Evenepoel is taking his time but he's already winning races so it can't be that bad Smile

A flash back from E3 in today's breakaway as both Theuns and Valverde were part of the escapees group. The breakaway looked very good throughout the day, but by the last pass on Oude Kwaremont and Patenberg, it was clear that they will not be contesting the victory today.

At the top of Patenberg, a group of 3 riders went clear: Van Aert, Terpstra and Van Avermaet. Despite all of them putting in some strong relays, the chase group behind them was also very strong and managed to bring them back in

i.imgur.com/0Qj8M8p.png

It would be another trio who would make the group that would make it to the finish line. Bettiol, Kristoff and Sagan attacked soon after the junction and unlike the others before them they were strong enough and close enough to the finish line to held their ground

i.imgur.com/pvBUqMS.png

Kristoff proved to be the strongest of them by far as even though he was no one who started the sprint he was able to keep the others at bay and claim a fantastic victory

Haven't commented much, but love following along to this story. Probably my favourite from last summer, and glad to see its back.

About Evenepoel, it looks like he's being trained as a fighter as my guess, as Im fairly sure his ACC isn't that high to begin with.

alexkr00
Glad to hear that you are enjoying the story, valv Grin

You are probably right about Evenepoel. Still nothing too crazy in his stats compared to others. Leo Vicnent is 83 on mountain, Lucas Hamilton is 81 on mountain. INEOS have 7 riders with over 80 in mountain. Geoghegan Hart, Sosa, Sivakov and Elissonde have joined the big 3 in this aspect. Perhaps this is normal and it just seems a bit weird (although I quite enjoy this development) for me because I haven't played in such a long time.

The cobbles, the awful weather and some very strong late attacks weren't enough to avoid a mass sprint in this year's Scheldeprijs. Jumbo took control of the race as we approached the finish line, ready to deliver Van Poppel's 10th victory of the season.

Everyone gasped as Van Poppel seemed to take a lot of time launching his sprint as he waited in Teunissen's wheel as the others sprinted past them. But the Dutch champion was right to trust his team - mate and wait for a late move as he had no problem beating the other's speed and then sprint past a tired Elia Viviani in the last corner of the race.

This year's edition of the Tour of the Basque Country was a total Julian Alaphilippe show. The Frenchman missed last year's classics but this year he seems in the shape of his life and could potentially make the Ardennes treble.

Back to our race, there was very little to tell about the race. Alaphilippe won 4 of the 6 stages, only missing out on the time - trial and the queen stage on Arrate. Lopez looked very strong in the Arrate stage and even though he put plenty of time into most of the other riders, he only beat Yates and Alaphilippe by 31 seconds, which was more than enough for the Frenchman to clench the final win thanks to the amount of the time he had won in the previous stages due to time bonuses or actual gaps on the road.

As the last half of the race was reached, Jumbo was still well represented in the main group of the race with Van Poppel, Van Aert, Teunissen and Jansen still there. A few important names were missing from the group due to various crashes and splits in the pack. Most notably: last year's winner, Peter Sagan as well as Jumbo's Dylan Van Baarle who had to abandon the race with a broken thigh.

i.imgur.com/YW4SYyM.png

On the penultimate cobbled sector, Benoot and Kristoff got a gap to the other favorites left in the main group. Only Benoot chose to continue the move on the road section that followed though.

i.imgur.com/QtQ5nnS.png

Riding alone proved to quite hard for the Belgian and he was brought back in the group in the next cobbled sector. It was now Van Aert's time to try his luck as he attacked from the group there to enter the velodrome with a small advantage over the chasing group

i.imgur.com/I27mH0s.png

Van Aert wouldn't be able to hold his fragile gap either though and things were eventually settled with a sprint. Kristoff was clearly the favorite in that scenario and he did not disappoint as he makes a historical double after winning the Tour of Flanders one week earlier.

The race started pretty well with Groenewegen after claiming the win in the first stage. He would miss out on the next opportunities, once in an uphill sprint agains Xandor Meurisse and then twice against Caleb Ewan. He would come back with another stage win in the last stage.

i.imgur.com/3nqUxc1.png
Groenewegen at the end of the first stage

The climb of the queen stage was not hard enough to make a big selection and we saw a group of 8 riders fighting for the stage win. Roche was first across the finish line, with Kruijswijk finishing second. The Irishman had lost time in a split in the previous stage and was out of contention for the first place in the GC.

Kruijswijk did not move into the leader's seat though as Kwiatkowski, who also finished in the same group as them had stolen a few bonus seconds in the previous stages. The last stage had some very narrow roads at the end and would have been the perfect opportunity for Kruijswijk to gain some time on Kwiatkowski, but it was still the Pole who came out on top as he finished the stage in second place.

Jumbo were very well represented on the last climb on Cauberg by a Belgian trio of De Plus, Van Aert and Vervaeke. Quick Step were also there with Woods ready to launch their French missle.

i.imgur.com/Hihz42b.png

And as expected there was no one capable of matching Alahpilippe's speed in the last speed. Quite surprisingly for Jubmo, Van Aert was the best of the rest, taking second place in fron of Bahrain's Diego Ulissi

Alaphilippe and Fuglsang figured waiting for the Mur du Huy was too main stream so they decided to attack on the climb before. As the result they begin the mythical climb with a slight advantage over a group of about 20 riders

i.imgur.com/PQPiN1v.png

Fuglsang wasn't strong to keep up the pace on Huy and was caught by the chasers. Not the same thing could be said about Alaphilippe who even though didn't climb as fast as those behind him he was able to keep the lead with quite an ease.

Surprisingly Van Aert was the fastest behind as he claims yet another second place behind the Frenchman. Surely, Van Aert wishes he would have found this type of form a couple of weeks earlier. Louis Vervaeke also with a very good climb up the Mur du Huy to claim a top 5.

Cote de la Roche-aux-Faucons made quite a selection in the pack as only 10 riders were left in the main group after it. The big favorite, Alaphilipe was there as well as Jumbo's De Plus and Vervaeke and the World Champion, Max Schachmann. Only one rider from last year's podium has made the split: Jakob Fuglsang.

i.imgur.com/8MqmJEn.png

No one was able to get away on Cote de Saint Nicolas so everything was decided in a sprint. And it was a Quick Step rider who was the fastest in the last kilometer of the race, but it was not Alaphilippe, it was Michael Woods! Alaphilippe looked really tired and out of juice in the sprint. It looks like all the effort from the previous races has finally got to him.

Last year's podium would go on to make the Giro podium. It's hard to believe the same thing will happen this year, but the race will still give us a good idea of who is in good shape ahead of the Giro.

The rider that impressed the most will not participate in Il Giro. Kwiatkowski won the opening prologue in Lausanne and then went on to win 3 other stages, including the queen one. The final time - trial proved to be a hat too big for him though, which allowed Tom Dumoulin to successfully defend his title.

i.imgur.com/HA8fz1X.png
Four stage wins was not enough for Kwiatek to win the overall

Tom Dumoulin looks set to make it back to back Giro victories. His biggest rival seems to be Miguel Angel Lopez. The Colombian is even stronger than in last year's Vuelta when he put up a very goo fight against Froome even though he came up short in the end. And with A. Yates and Pinot in his team he will have more than great support. He will have to put on a show in the mountains if he wants to be in pink in Rome though as this year's route favors the time - trial specialists!

Roglic will just be looking for another podium as improving on last year's second place. He has not improved in any aspect compared to Dumoulin so it's very hard to imagine he will be able to beat him, while a few other riders here also seem to be on a level above him.

Danny Van Poppel will surely look to continue the fantastic season he's been having and hoping to add to his records of achievements a first Grand Tour win with the team after having add his fist monument win ever earlier in Milano - Sanremo. Viviani and Gaviria seem to be his biggest rivals.

Deceunick was to strong in the Ardennes, but Wout did more than a good job.
Good luck in Italia! If Van Poppel is close to his level of the beginning of the season, he must win a stage or 2.
