Monthly Wrap up - May
What a month!
The sponsors can't be unhappy after a month like this. Here are the hilights:
-8 Giro d'Italia stage wins (3 for Boassen Hagen, 2 for Pinotti, and one each for Burghardt, Ulissi and Rogers).
-3rd overall in Giro d'Italia (Rogers)
-Winner of Climber Jersey in Giro d'Italia (Pinotti)
-Winner of Volta Ciclista Catalunya... our first pro-tour stage race win (Kirchen)... also took 3rd in the race (Lovkvist)
-4 Volta Ciclista Catalunya stage wins (3 for Kirchen, 1 for Ciolek)
-2 stage wins in 4 Jours de Dunkerque (Ciolek and Hammond)
-3rd overall in 4 jours de Dunkerque (Hammond)
-Stage win in tour of Romandie (Boassen Hagen)
-2nd overall in Tour of Romandie (Rogers)
-2nd overall in Bayern-Rundfahrt (Martin)
Honestly... it doesn't get much better than that on the pro-tour.
The Pro-Tour standings (individual):
Pro-Tour team rankings:
Magazine:
Seeing as this is pretty close to the half way point in the season, I thought we'd also share the improvemnts oru team has made.
Here's how things were back in January:
And here's how our team looks now:
We've been particularly impressed with the improvement shown by Sergio Louis Henao, Diego Ulissi, Edvald Boassen Hagen and John Devine. |

Kirchen is.
I'm a little worried about the time trials, and the sponsors want a top 5 finish. I imagine it will be tight. Lovkvist, Hincapie and Possoni will be the mountain helpers, Cavendish and Ciolek will be there for the sprints.
Gerdeman is going to ride the Vuelta. He won't really have raced at all until August, so he'll be a lot fresher than many of the other guys in the race. I think he might have a shot at winning that one. |

Reading Classic
This is a small race in the US that we're using as a tune up for the Dauphine Libre and Tour de Suisse.
It's got a little bit of hilliness to it. When the time came for an attack... virtually our entire team went. We had five riders in the break.
The inital TV break was still ahead. Everyone pushed hard to get Edvald close enough that he could pass them in the sprint.
And when the sprint came, Edvald took off and won it. He's still in very good form from the Giro.

Philadelphia Intl. Championship
Another US race we're riding in for sponsor purposes. While classified as flat, there are some decent little hills on this circuit.
Just before the final hill we sent four riders on an attack and were suprised when nobody came with us.
We powered our way over the hills and the gap just grew and grew. In the end, we won by over 2 minutes, with Burghardt taking the honors.

Don't like that you're playing that un-realistic!

I don't know if my tactics are all that unrealistic. I think that attacks on late hills are pretty common in races. Heck, attacks on flat finishes are common too. Hincapie generally tries it a couple of flat stages in every tour he rides in.
Perhaps I need to up the difficulty to extreme if people think I'm winning too easily. I've won only one pro-tour stage race and one single-day race though... and neither of them were particularly absurd (Hincapie winning Gent-Wevelgem and Kirchen winning Volta Ciclista Catalunya aren't exactly unthinkable).
I haven't won a single pro or grand tour mountain stage yet though... in fact I've gotten killed on most of them. That's my big worry about upping the difficulty to extreme. |

Criterium du Dauphine Libre - Stage 2
A flat stage, but the late rise could cause some sprinters difficulty in the stage. It's probably enough to knock Greipel out of the running for us. We'll try an attack on the hill, but Boassen Hagen will take part in the sprint. This should cover all of our bases.
Hincapie went on the break and won the mountain sprints today. He'll be in the mountain jersey tomorrow.
At the base of the last hill, Pinotti leads Kirchen out on a late attack.
With just inside of 1 km to go, Pinotti is caught, and Kirchen is holding on with the slimmest of leads. Boassen Hagen is in good position and is starting to make his move.
But Edvald has to move out of line to get past Kirchen when the sprint reaches him, completely stopping any chance of a stage win! Edvald gets second and Kirchen takes third, but Danilo Napolitano stays ahead to win the stage.
We had some poor communication there and it may have cost us the stage. We need to work on that.

Criterium du Dauphine Libre - Stage 3
Classified as flat, this stage really isn't with a significant clim toward the end of the race.
Gadret attacked on the final hill and Kirchen followed along with others.
Carrara was by far the best sprinter of the group and blew the rest of them away in the sprint. The pelaton was able to close it up enough so that no time gap was awarded. Kirchen managed to take second in the sprint.

Criterium du Dauphine Libre - Stage 4
Another time trial. Kirchen has to just minimize his losses. Boassen Hagen may be able to retain his leader's jersey with a good ride.
Kirchen ended up losing nearly 3 minutes on stage winner Andreas Kloden. Aside from that it was a pretty good day, with five riders in the top 10 for the stage.

Just the Tour de Suisse. He won't be the leader though... Rogers will be finishing his season with that race. |

Tour de France Squad announced
High Road has officially announced their Tour de France squad.
Leading the team will be Kim Kirchen. We're hoping for a top 5 finish in the tour and Kim's a good enough climber to pull that off. We may need to be agressive in some hilly stages to get some time as well.
For the sprints, Mark Cavendish and Gerald Ciolek will be taking part. We're not going to name a leading sprinter, instead looking for the hot hand in each stage.
George Hincapie will be riding in a mixed role. He's got a free reign to take off on breaks and try to win stages. But in stages he doesn't break away on, he'll be tasked with leading the leadout train in sprints and helping Kirchen... especially in descents.
Thomas Lovkvist will be Kirchen's primary climbing help. If disaster should strike, he's our backup GC man as well.
Tony Martin, Michael Barry, Morris Possoni and Taylor Phinney are all dedicated helpers in the race.
Bradley Wiggins was supposed to ride the Tour this year, but he missed over two months with a broken collarbone. He just got back on his bike at the beginning of June and won't be in good enough form for the Tour. Expect to see Bradley in the Vuelta. |

Criterium du Dauphine Libre - Stage 5
As you can tell by the profile... this is a key stage in the Dauphine Libre. There's nothing too confusing about it either... it's all in the last hill up to the finish. Who will be the strongest?
Kloden didn't leave us waiting very long... he attacked very early in the final climb and Evans went with him. We sent our four best climbers to try to keep pace (Hincapie, Kirchen, Ulissi and Pinotti).
But Cadel and Andreas were in a different league. Our guys were stuck in a chase while the two of them dueled it out on the slope.
Hincapie and Pinotti couldn't keep pace for long, and Kirchen and Ulissi were left to chase as a pair.
In the end, Evans powered away from Kloden in the final kilometer of the climb with that odd style the Australian prefers.
Kirchen finished 3rd and Ulissi 4th. Kirchen was over three minutes back. Looks like the Giro... we're now fighting for 3rd.
