@ sutty68 & welker3257: Yeah Roelandts is too good for cat 2 and not enough for cat 1
Objectives
Going in South America with a strong team (Castroviejo, Nerz and Alberio) our objectives should be high:
- Overall win,
- Top 3 for the 2nd rider,
- Top 5 for the 3rd rider
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points
Key Stages
Stage 1 – Hilly
Two goals for this stage: the stage win with Nerz and getting Castroviejo crossing the line together with Moreno Bazan.
A rather strong break got a 7’ lead early in the stage. Fortunately UnitedHealthcare did most of the job at the front of the bunch and we reduce the gap to 2’.
Just before the last climb, Nerz attacks. Soon he passes the break away guys to take the lead
and ultimately win the stage with 1’30 gap on Moreno.
Behind Alberio and Castroviejo stick to Moreno till the very last metres of the sprint.
Stage 3 – Mountain
18 kilometres climb to finish the stage. This will be key for the GC and Moreno is favourite ahead of Castroviejo. We let a break with 2 poor climbers take an 8’ lead.
Approching the climb, our team leads the bunch full spead.
Then, Alberio attacks at the bottom of the climb and hopes for not being chased. But he is and a small group breaks free from the rest of the pack. With Castroviejo and Nerz, but no Moreno.
So Castroviejo decides to go, he soon catches Alberio and continues his effort alone.
Behind it is pretty much everyone for himself.
And Moreno finally comes back from the rest of the bunch.
First he passes Alberio, then he passes Nerz.
Will he catch Castroviejo too?
Not today boy. We just keep the yellow in the team.
Nerz does well finishing 4th today and is now 40’’ behind Moreno in GC. Harder for Alberio who crosses the line in 8th and is 2’ down the Top 5 in GC.
Stage 5 – Hilly
The objective is for Nerz to break in penultimate climb so as to get back some time before the ITT on Moreno and collect another stage win. And that exactly what he does, wining the stage with 1’30 on Moreno and claiming back the yellow.
Castrviejo and Alberio have to stay with Moreno. And so they do too, together with Cano Ardila.
Until on a last attack Moreno gets away with just Castroviejo following. Alberio still manages to get back the 5th GC place for 16’’ only over Alarcon.
Stage 8 – ITT 46km
Each one got his battle on this very long ITT:
Castroviejo vs Phinney for the stage win. With only 11’’ gap it was close, but enough!
Nerz with Moreno to stay ahead in GC. Not only did he that but he extended his lead by 6’’;
Alberio to keep his 5th in GC. He failed for 17’’ and currently ranks 6th again, 9’30 behind the new leader: Castroviejo.

Wrap up:
4/5
We had very high objectives and we exceeded them with 4 stage wins! Even Alberio's 6th place could not be so disappointing: he ranked 8th last year and that was with no Catroviejo nor Nerz in front, so it is a 4 places progress. Not that bad after all.
- Overall win,
- Top 3 for the 2nd rider,
- Top 5 for the 3rd rider
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points

Overall for JellyBelly and now Dual Temp that must be well over 12 wins in South American races alone by my count.
The signings you made are worth their weight in gold. |

I'm surprised you managed to get the 1-2, I thought Moreno would put up more of a fight then that. also nice to see Jurgen getting lots of good results for you aswell, I'm sure the other riders will stop complaining about the cobbles when they see the prize money the team's been getting.

@ sutty68 & wleker3257: yeah great results with a strong team!
@ The Rider: yeah great signings Thank you guys!
South America has been the real gold mine though: 16 stages win and 2 GC (Sao Paulo & Colombia) last year ; 8 stages and 2 GC (Vuelta Independencia & Vuelta del Uruguay) so far this year which means 28 victories there
(I'll put a win table in next Avril wrap up post tomorrow).
@ sammyt93: Moreno Bazan is indeed strong : he beats Nerz and Ovechkin (2nd & 3rd) in Rutas de America. Back in Uruguay, we were looking for revenge
And well apparently you are right: all the team is currently "Over the moon"
Category 1 flat long race… Roelandts is very fresh when the final sprint comes and he chooses Bole’s wheels. With 2.2 kilometres he is fighting to keep it.
It sounds good when Bole launches the sprint 1.6 kilometres away from the line. First Roelandts struggles because of the acceleration but 400 metres later he is the only one left in Bole’s wheel. Now, it is time to try double him.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | 4h29'02 | 2 | Grega Bole | Lampre - Isd | s.t. | 3 | Simon Clarke | GreenEdge | s.t. | 4 | Allan Davis | GreenEdge | s.t. | 5 | Tiziano Dall'antonia | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | 6 | Pablo Urtasun Perez | Euskaltel - Euskadi | s.t. | 7 | Eros Capecchi | Liquigas - Cannondale | s.t. | 8 | Rasmus Guldhammer | Christina Watches - Onfone | s.t. | 9 | Huub Duyn | Lkt Team Brandenburg | s.t. | 10 | Sebastian Lang | Nutrixxion Sparkasse | s.t. |
Objectives
We are in Turkey to win some stages, knowing we are lacking a strong puncher for the GC (actually Roelandts is the best of this team, if I thought Castroviejo able to win in Uruguay, I would have come with Nerz in Turkey).
- 2 stage wins or 1 stage win & points or mountain jersey or Top 10.
Key stages
Stage 1 - Flat
The most important event happens 15 kilometres from the line when the stage favourite, Ferrari, crashed and split the bunch.
All the other sprinters are still on the front and Roelandts once again chooses Bole’s wheel. It sounds again as the good choice as all the other favourites are behind (in order Bozic, Cardoso, and Sutton.)
This time Bole does no mistake and it has been very close for the win.
Stage 2 – Flat
Another flat stage for another sprint. We had Miller in the break and he will bear KoM shirt tomorrow. Plus he almost did it: only 2 kilometres to go when
Bole proves to be the strong guy and even though we had his wheel, as usual, we could nothing but finish 3rd.
Stage 5 – Flat
Roelandts takes Ferrari’s wheel for a change. Well Bole is winning again. But with Ferrari’s 2nd place our choice wasn’t that bad. In any case, we were short once again and finished 5th.
Stage 7 – Flat
Another flat stage for another massive sprint. Roelandts gets back to his favourite wheel and claims a 2nd place behind the unstoppable Bole.

Wrap Up
1/1
- 2 stage wins or 1 stage win & points or mountain jersey or Top 10.
Not sure we should have registered to this race though. Yes, with KoM, a Top 10 and a stage win we have more than fulfilled our objectives. But it costs us 8 days racing at the time the team is already overracing…
We put both Nerz and Alberio on the starting line of this cat 1 1 day classic with some objectives.
Alberio struggles to anwer the best’s moves in the final, but sprints well to claim a well disserved Top 10.
Nerz let Nocentini goes to stick to Spilak, the race favourite. With a strong wind blowing, we were very hopefull when Spilak catches and creates a gap with Nocentini.
Unfortunately Nocentini has saved some strength to get back in the wheels first and outspint everyone then. A very nice 2nd place for Nerz though!

@ welker3257: yes he will have a couple of race more and then break till the season end. his form is definitly at a pic right now.
It is time for choice with good news coming in.
No less than 6 sponsors are willing to work with me next year.
Here are the best 2.
I guess it is a no brainer. The question for me is:
How long should I ask AT&T? I am tempted by 1 year so I can go for a Legendary sponsor next year. But 2 years might be an option?

Nice to see the leaders of Dual Temp getting a hatful of victories, it takes off the pressure from the smaller name riders in the squad.
2 years with A T & T seems to be the best deal ..... But I'm not happy about it!
Even though the sponsors are offering up more money each season the jersey/ sponsor seems to become more corporate and dull. I doubt AT & T's jersey will be anywhere near as 'cool' as Dual Temp's or JellyBelly's. |

@ sutty68 & The Rider: AT&T, 2 years contract signed. I did not like Dual Temp shirt anyway, I'll wait next season to discover AT&T, hope I get a different opinion as I signed for 2 years...
April comes to an end, and it is time to wrap up this 1st third of the season!
After difficult races we end up with 19 victories in 4 months. It sounds good when compared to the overall 22 we had last year. Especially as we had solid GC results on top of it.
The big deception though is our virgin line in HC category races.
After an overloaded month of April
We will have the opportunity to focus on higher category races in May and hope for our first HC win ever.
We indeed have no more problem to enter almost any race we like (Tour of Poland WT will be a test though), and I did not enough race selection. With an average number of racing day of 36.2 for the team, we have in fact raced more than 1/2 of the season… Castroviejo has raced 48 days, Roelandts 47 days, Alberio 42, Nerz 41. Only Gerdemann’s team with only 20 days raced got some room for big actions.
With such an heavy planning we are logically trusting the ranking with 4 Top 10 riders, including number 1 and number 2:
So we is WT accession in the pocket? Not really: sure we have a comfortable margin but with yet Grand Tours to come 500 points sound like a thin margin over a Cofidis strong team…
Still we definitely have a shot and that is good news.
Even more satisfying is the progression table: of course it is on 4 months instead of our usual 3, but I is very colourful this time!
Coaches have been helpful indeed. Gerdemann’s improvements on Mountain and Resistance will be welcome for his later races. Nerz, Alberio and Butler have shown massive progresses (with even a +3 on RES for Alberio!) And Castroviejo +1 in both TT and PRL will certainly prove handful too…

@ welker3257: That is good. What would even be better is a place in WT
@ sutty68: Thank you. I hope that too!
Roelandts is the big favourite for this flat cat 2 classic.
Unfortunately Ovechkin is in a very bad day and his efforts were not enough to get back a 4 men attack in the last 8 kilometres. Roelandts launched his sprint with 2 kilometres to go in a desperete effort to catch them back but he fails on the line, wining the bunch sprint for a poor 5th place.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Robert Vrecer | Saeco - Centri della Calzatura | 4h12'58 | 2 | Christoph Pfingsten | Cycling Team De Rijke | s.t. | 3 | Caleb Fairly | Team SpiderTech Powered By C10 | s.t. | 4 | Andy Jacques-Maynes | Trek Livestrong U23 | s.t. | 5 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | s.t. |
Stage 1 – Flat
“We can expect a massive sprint to end this stage. Let’s just make sure it happens and let Jurgen proves who is the best sprinter of the field! So we can at last win a HC race.”
Massive sprint, here we are. With Offredo, the stage favourite accelerating at 2.5 km, Roelandts has to launch his sprint with 1.9 km not to loose too many ground. Kreder is very well placed in his wheel and overtakes him at the 600 metres. But Roelandts manages to get him back for a very hard stage victory!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | 4h14'46 | 2 | Wesley Kreder | Rabobank Continental Team | s.t. | 3 | Yoann Offredo | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. |
Stage 2 – Flat
“Great win yesterday, let’s just repeat the same today!”
The team does a great job to ensure a final sprint. Roelandts takes Ravard’s wheel
and passes him on the line for a second win in a row!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | 3h53'22 | 2 | Anthony Ravard | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. | 3 | Domenik Klemme | Bretagne - Schuller | s.t. |
Stage 3 – Flat
“Let’s go for the hat trick!”
Another great team job, another great sprint, in front of the race favourite today!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | 4h04'58 | 2 | Yoann Offredo | FDJ - BigMat | s.t. | 3 | Fabien Bacquet | BigMat - Auber 93 | s.t. |
Stage 4 – Hilly & Cobble
“Today is the key stage. Ideally we like a break away not too dangerous and Jurgen tries to keep Offredo’s wheel to preserve his overall lead”.
When the cobble section starts our team has already worked to keep the break under the 4’ lead. That is when Van Hecke attacks. Strangely enough he easily closes the gap and break free at the front. All our team but Roelandts and Ovechkin is working hard to keep the break under control as Van Heck is only 3’ down in GC.
But we fail and he soon gets over 6’ lead. So we have to ask our last man to chase: Ovechkin moves to the front with 60 kilometres to go. And he does manage to reduce the gap to less than 5’. But he is soon going out of power too.
With 45 kilometres to go, FdJ team is finally relaying but Pinot is not strong enough and the gap remain over 4' and stable.
When the next cobble section arrives, Roelandts attacks. He soon catches the breakaway men but Konig, Amorison and of course Van Hecke who has still over 4’ minutes lead.
Unfortunately a puncture put him back in Offredo’s group with some power burnt for nothing. Chainel was leading the group but stops his effort as our man is cought back. How frustrating it is to let Van Hecke take the lead… Ovechkin does his best but with no power left, the gap grows to more than 7’.
Finally Chainel takes back the chase after some other favorites have attacked. Too late and when Offredo finally makes his move Van Heck has secured both the stage win and the pink for long.
Roelandts does a good job and saves the second place for 1’’…
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Preben Van Hecke | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | 5h25'54 | 2 | Leopold Konig | Team Net App | + 3'16 | 3 | Frédéric Amorison | Landbouwkrediet | + 5'12 | 4 | Arnaud Coyot | Bretagne - Schuller | + 5'49 | 5 | Yoann Offredo | FDJ - BigMat | + 6'12 | 6 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | + 6'31 |
Stage 5 – Flat
"Good job yesterday, we lost the race due to FDJ's attitude, so let's deny them stage victory and second place!"
Despite the strong wind there was no suspense anymore. The stage ends in a massive sprint and Roelandts finishes second to Offredo.
Even more frustrating to loose our second place to the FdJ’s leader. What a pitty with the team they have, they let Van Hecke take the overall win…
Still a great race with our first, and second, and third HC wins
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Yoann Offredo | FDJ - BigMat | 4h14'09 | 2 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | s.t. | 3 | Anthony Ravard | Ag2r La Mondiale | s.t. |

@ sutty68 & welker3257: that must be because Dunkerque is so close from Belgium that Jurgen feels at home
Stage 1 – Hilly
“Last year, Tomas’ win was unexpected. This year we can expect Dominique’s win plus a Top 5 for Tomas! Pietropolli is the man to follow.”
We does control the race together with Bank Bgz. Until at the bottom of the last climb, Nerz attacks for the win.
Alberio and Castroviejo do their best to follow Pietropolli and Alberio almost succeeds.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Dominique Nerz | Dual Temp | 4h35'34 | 2 | Daniele Pietropolli | Bank Bgz | + 2'02 | 3 | Tomas Alberio | Dual Temp | + 2'16 | 4 | Pasquale Muto | Meridiana Kamen Team | + 2'47 | 5 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | Dual Temp | + 2'57 |
Stage 2 – Flat
Pietropolli gets his team to ensure a massive sprint and gets a well disserved win.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Daniele Pietropolli | Bank Bgz | 4h01'43 | 2 | Mauro Finetto | Team Eddy Merckx - Indeland | s.t. | 3 | Angelo Furlan | Meridiana Kamen Team | s.t. | 6 | Dominique Nerz | Dual Temp | s.t. |
Stage 3 – Flat
The breakaway got no one dangerous in so we let it go. BankBgz is again chasing like yesterday. In the final they are very tired and struggling to get back Land who has attacked. So with 7 kilometres to go Castroviejo tries to break.
He had just enough power to keep the advantage on the line!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | Dual Temp | 4h14'08 | 2 | Pirmin Lang | Atlas Personal | s.t. | 3 | Mathieu Drujon | BigMat - Auber 93 | s.t. |
Stage 4 – Hilly
The team controls the break away and rides full speed just before the final climb. Then they suddenly stop as Alberio attacks.
Atlas Personal then unleashes their leaders with Nerz and Castroviejo in their wheels. But no Pietropolli who was not well placed when the climb started.
Seeing Bosmans is catching back Alberio, Nerz attacks to claim his second stage and overall win.
Alberio resists well for an overall podium. Castroviejo also getting his fair share of glory with a welcome Top 5.
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Dominique Nerz | Dual Temp | 3h51'24 | 2 | Wietse Bosmans | Atlas Personal | + 48 | 3 | Tomas Alberio | Dual Temp | s.t. | 4 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | Dual Temp | + 57 | 5 | Florian Stalder | Atlas Personal | + 1'05 |

Points - Daniele Pietropolli
Montain - Dominique Nerz
Stage 1 – Prologue 6.5 km
“Jonathan you are the big favourite, please don’t disappoint us!”
With good feeling today, he was very impressive!

Stage 3 – Hilly
Very strange race as Le Mevel the second favourite is breaking away. Our team does his maximum to close the gap, but it isn’t enough. So we decide to ask Castroviejo to ride in front of the bunch despite his yellow jersey.
Then Movistar is taking the lead and when Valverde attacks, Nerz cannot react.
