I told you, watch out with Grajales, I still hope he arrives wearing yellow in Paris!!

The final mountain day of the race, and the lone summit finish of the Pyrénées, in Peyragudes. The bookies have backed Grajales today, and considering the freedom with which he was climbing yesterday, it's hard to argue with them...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0001_zps51f683e1.jpg
9 men give us our initial breakaway today, and there's some big news! Neither of the Drapac boys in the KotM competition have joined the break, but Lowsley-Williams (3rd place, 13points behind) is here, with 50points available on the stage!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0003_zps2b8311e4.jpg
Semple knows he's made a mistake, and joins an attempted bridging move, along with Yovchev of A&V, and Beukeboom of De Rijke. Will he manage to contest the climbs today, after his exertions on the previous stage?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0004_zps22c08117.jpg
The trio fail to get across, and as the break reaches the summit of the Col du Menté(1), L-Williams takes back 10points on his opposition!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0006_zpse1d58ab7.jpg
At this stage in the race, Cat3 climbs aren't normally a massive significance, however, the 2 points mean that Lowsley-Williams of UK Youth is now just 1 point behind in the KotM competition. If the breaks 8'45 lead can be maintained for the next 55km, to the summit of the Port de Balés, he can put the KotM Jersey beyond doubt upon his shoulders!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0007_zps49437dc0.jpg
The 13man break seems to have been given free reign by the peloton. with 70km to ride the gap reached the 10minute mark, and showed no sign of reducing!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0008_zpsf95a9812.jpg
52km and the gap is at 12minutes. No one in the break can benefit from less than 20, and Vorarlberg seem happy to give away the stage, perhaps hoping it will defer some of the attacks.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0009_zpsc2f2503d.jpg
5km from the summit for the peloton, and still we've seen neither action or a reaction to the guys out front. the lead has grown to almost 14minutes, and only the big climb to Peyragudes remains. Assuming he doesn't crash in the next 3km, the UKYouth rider has the Polka-Dot bagged!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0010_zpse5d6f91b.jpg
He's done it! The Brit takes the full 25 on the summit, meaning he leads Lapthorne by 23 points. There are only 20more available in the entire race, so Uk Youth will take the King of the Mountains jersey home on there riders shoulders!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zps5a0fbe54.jpg
78riders crest the Port de Balés together in the peloton, in a group which contains all the favourites. The break will take the day almost without doubt, they have just 22km to ride, and a lead of 13minutes

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0012_zpsf28e8ad2.jpg
For the second time in 2 days the riders begin the ascent of the Col du Peyresourde, and in an almost identical place to where Zanasca went yesterday, Grajales and Stevenson have attacked today! Grajales is labelled as the best climber here, but he'll need a lot of time if he can hold the jersey past the TT, Stevenson meanwhile was an outside favourite at the outset, but sits 2minutes off the lead, so both have the incentive to give it everything today!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zpse52d8af0.jpg
The attack didn't stick, but no team really has control of the pace now. All the favourites are up the front of the pack putting in small digs to force a response. This will be certain to tire some legs...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0014_zps7cb3f017.jpg
14/12km. With 14km to go in the peloton, Grajales has got a team mate up at the front forcing the pace higher. Riding with him is Romero who lost the jersey yesterday, and the favourites follows. In P.24 sits the Maillot Jaune, whilst Dombrowski is in P.26

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zps38ec9b8a.jpg
13.5/11.7km... Grajales goes! No one has followed straight away, and Grajales is really pushing the pedals down hard at the moment, great attack by the Colombian Veteran

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0017_zpsa2a08a69.jpg
10/9km... Grajales is holding a steady 20" gap, but the other favourites won;t let him free. Meanwhile the gap to the break is falling by the second, and at this rate they may actually be caught, they're going at half of the speed of the guys behind them!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0018_zpse006eb52.jpg
9/8km... Dombrowski and Romero decide to try and get across to the lone colombian out in front. Dombrowski came flying from several places back, it's clear he meant what he said yesterday about giving all he had on this stage!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0020_zps41b98c10.jpg
7.8/7.2km... Grajales leads the favourites, official gap is at 1'01". In the middle is the Cuban, Romero who lost the GC lead yesterday, who sits 36" behind the Colombian. The peloton is lead by Rabo-CT, so perhaps Goos is also planning an attack today?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0021_zpsfbf92567.jpg
Dombrowski attacks over the summit of the climb! it's a good move just 6700m from the line, but nobody goes with him, it's a long way to ride solo...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0022_zpsd6af690e.jpg
With 3.7km to the line, the peloton are about to catch a large proportion of the breakaway, Dombrowski has also been shut down by the reducing peloton, so we're back at square one in terms of the attacks.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0023_zps4b572baa.jpg
2000m to the line, and De Winter(Jong-Vlandaaren) has gone solo from the breakaway. GC leader Vrecer has been forced to take over pace-setting in the leaders group, as he's out of team mates.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0024_zps928c3343.jpg
1300/1100m... Zanasca attacks! He's the first man to close to the breakaway, leaving just De winter alone out in front, 29" is Zanascas gap to the peloton, and in that group, GC 7th is struggling, Stevenson has almost disappeared out the back door!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0025_zpsfc2e4608.jpg
500m... De Winter has got over the final summit 800m from the line, and his gap looks to be enough! As the peloton splits once more, both 7th and 8th miss the cut, however, they're unlikely to lose big time, as none of the favourites have really managed to light it up today...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0026_zps95dba9b8.jpg
De Winter wins for Jong-Vlandaaren! The favourites mostly finish in a group at 16" behind, but Romero loses yet more time today, slipping to 6th in the GC.

Aftermath

Well with no more mountains remaining in the race, we only have one more decisive looking stage in terms of the GC. The TT on stage 20 will be the last opportunity for a re-shuffle, and several names look set to lose time there.

Grajales, Zanasca and Romero all stand to lose large amounts of time, and it could certainly be argued that Dombrowski is favourite to win overall. That being said, his form has been questionable in the last few days, and it's difficult to say to what extend the American is feeling the pace.

His performance today was enough for the UKYouth rider to pip both of his Drapac rivals at the post. Their are no longer enough points in the race for him to be caught, so congratulations to James Lowsley-Williams, the first Jersey owner of the underdog tour!

Cheers, I thought I should get this one finished off properly before I moved onto my Rapha story, so i'll hopefully get this finished off over the next 2-3days alongside my Catalunya reports for the UCPCL

Of the 2 remaining road stages, the Champs Elyssés is the favourite for a sprint. Stage 18 is 215km in length, and as the riders set off this morning the temperature was a soaring 32degrees. The terrain is hilly, and the break are surely keen to give it a go today.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0001_zps71663efd.jpg
7 men make it into this mornings attack and quickly take a 2minute advantage. They are; Franzoi(Miche) Goesinnen(Drapac), Bercz(EMI), Schweizer(Nutrixxion), Barker(UKYouth), De Poortere(JVC) and Groenewegen(De Rijke)

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0002_zpsc9c8ca49.jpg
Just 70km into the stage we see several teams marshalling the peloton. GC leaders Vorarlberg, Roubaix Lillé Métropole and Differdange are all involved, though they seem to be happy giving the break a gap. 7'14 at this point.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0003_zpseca56440.jpg
Crash in the Peloton! On the short first descent of the day, Jonas Ljungblad gets the corner horribly wrong. He's thrown from his bike but luckily finds a soft landing and is able to get up to continue, will this affect him if the race finishes in a sprint?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0004_zps0fe3aa00.jpg
Nothing more than a token sprint from Franzoi as the break pass through the intermediate sprint. The peloton have begun to reduce the breaks lead, which stood at 9'40 at one point in the stage.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0005_zps05d65a50.jpg
You know the swedes will complain, but you can't blame the frenchman Flahaut for taking the 8th place in the sprint, bringing the gap between them back to just 11points.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0006_zps12e9cd4f.jpg
Judging by the changed composition of the chasers, it would seem that Ljungblad is feeling the effects of his crash somewhat. He's got his team around him towards the back of the peloton, but as a favourite before the stage, he's no longer acting that way.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0007_zps15cf609e.jpg
With 80km left in the stage, the 1minute per 10km rule is broken for the first time in the day. The lead has stretched to 8'27, and the heart seems to have gone out of the chasers. Flahaut may be feeling the effects of this lumpier stage, and with no GC threat in the break, it's no surprise that people are unwilling to pick it up.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0008_zps122bf80c.jpg
55km and the gap is up to 10minutes! The sprinters teams have given it up, and the rest of the peloton seem eager to save the legs ahead of tomorrows decisive TT, today looks set for the break!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0009_zpsd37e14fc.jpg
27km and the lead still holds at 10'16. It looks ready for the break and the only remaining question is how long before the games begin

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0010_zps0968b4c5.jpg
20km... The first attack comes from within the break! Drapac's Goesinnen kicks it off and is immediately tracked by compatriot Groenewegen, and Franzoi of Miche-Guerciotti

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zpse41f4243.jpg
10km... Franzoi is forcing his partners in the breakaway to keep up the pace, simply sitting on the back and reacting when they try and drop him. He's the best sprinter here, but will have to be aware of the group behind, who are just 19" behind them at this point.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0012_zpsd0726d97.jpg
7km... The group behind make the catch, but as soon as it comes back together in the break, Franzoi attacks again!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zpsbee08941.jpg
3km... The italian is joined by Drapacs Goesinnen once more. The duo hold 17" and from here it's downhill to the finish...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0014_zps2e4d344a.jpg
2km... Back together again and now it's a mass sprint for the line between 7 exhausted men. On paper De Poortere is the quickest man in the group, but what's he got left after 215km?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0015_zpsf7388f9d.jpg
1km... Bercz of EMI has moved into the lead after coming past Barker, it's between these three now, as the others are fading in the closing kilometres...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zps53d16c51.jpg
Schweizer takes the win! He saved his sprint until the last moments and had the legs to come past Barker and Bercz.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0017_zps16934071.jpg
Behind in the peloton, RLM have a train together with 5 to go, and Ljungblad is no where to be seen. Clearly the crash has had an effect on him, and he's not going to be able to contest the sprint for 8th place.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0018_zps7971b319.jpg
Weissinger and Merlot launch with 2km to go followed by an RLM rider... Lalouette! Has Flahaut decided to take this fight to the Champs rather than win through a crash?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0019_zps35bef7e9.jpg
Well, he sprinted but definitely not on full gas, 14th place is his finish, whilst Rick Zabel takes the peloton sprint

Interview with Denis Flahaut

CN: You appeared to let Kevin take part in the sprint in your place today?

Denis Flahaut: I knew that Jonas (Ljungblad) wasn't feeling good after his crash, we've been competing throughout the race for the Maillot Vert and it seemed unreasonable to take advantage of his bad luck.

CN: All set for a showdown on the Champs Elyssés then?

Denis Flahaut: That's certainly my hope, yes! I tried to take enough points today that it just comes down to where the two of us finish up on sunday, we'll see who bests who there.

CN: An honourable gesture, all the best to you, and we'll look forward to your fireworks!

Denis Flahaut: Cheers, hopefully you'll see me on the podium in Paris!

So here we are, the penultimate day of the race, and the final stage which will affect the GC. At 52km todays TT will be sure to have a massive effect upon the final standings. We've got highlights of the key riders for the GC, as well as some of the earlier starters who put in an impressive performance...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0005_zps0c665cb3.jpg
A powerful effort by Benoit Jarrier of Verandas saw him pass both his 2, and 4 minute men! The rider finished in 1'17'12" which was enough to leave him top before any of the final ten made it home.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0007_zps2906696c.jpg
One rider who had no interest in todays TT was UK Youth's James Lowsley Williams. He finished his job in the mountains to confirm that he will wear the Polka-Dot in Paris tomorrow, today enjoying his parade, finishing 4'36 down on the eventual winner.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zpsc3d6ebce.jpg
Amore & Vita brought an eclectic collection of nationalities to the Underdog Tour. One man in that squad was Mexican TT Champion Bernardo Colex, who finished 11" behind on Jarrier, and took 6th on the stage.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zps6633eb24.jpg
Huub Duyn took the Maillot Jaune for a few days early in the race. Sadly for him he was out of contention for anything more than a stage win today, finishing up 3rd, 1" behind the time of Benoit Jarrier

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zps18855898.jpg
The last of the non-GC men we have to tell you about is Christian Poos, the Luxembourg TT champion. He has a stage already to his name and managed a fine 5th place to go with it today too!

The Big Top 10!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0019_zpsaee0473d.jpg
GC's number 10 Lawson Craddock was the overall favourite for the day, and he didn't disappoint! He absolutely destroyed the time of Jarrier and Duyn, taking the stage lead by a massive 42seconds! With the benchmark set, it was time to see what became of the remaining riders.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0020_zps4af4105b.jpg
Lapthorne found himself rather surprisingly nestled in the top10 after a few succesful breakaways, he managed to cling on today, losing 3minutes, but scraping into the GC top 10 even so!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0021_zps208bdc9f.jpg
Dabrowski has played damage limitation throughout the race, managing to limit his losses every single day proved enough proved enough for a GC 9th, losing just 1'41 to Craddock today

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0022_zps7e63d5df.jpg
The swedish GC hope failed to set the world alight in the way his sprinting compatriot has so far, however he will take a comfortable top10 place, after 7th on the stage 1'15 down.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0023_zpsc6470903.jpg
After a few days in the Maillot Jaune, Romero seemed to run out of steam. Never the less his performance today was reasonable, and at +1'36" he manages to largely limit his losses on the TT bike.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0024_zps88de4056.jpg
The young dutchman Marc Goos is another to have quietly trundled along into a strong final position. despite dropping just under 2'00 today, he will finish top10, and will have spearheaded his teams successful attack on the Team Classification

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0025_zps0e1cf29a.jpg
The first of the big 4 down the ramp, and he didn't look to be enjoying his race at checkpoint 1, already beginning to ship time on his rivals.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0026_zps0615a4c5.jpg
Of the 3 who could threaten Vrecer, Dombrowski in the Maillot Blanc looks best set. He was going well early, though there is a question over the youngsters fitness, who struggled in the races second run through the mountains.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0027_zpsa6dae9b1.jpg
Zanascas main aim today must be to protect the podium. He's got no love for the TT bike, but holds over a minute to the first genuine threat, Marc Goos as they roll off the ramp.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0028_zps56082168.jpg
He's off! Vrecer of Slovenia seems in no mood to hang around and is setting a good pace early on. Vrecer is reasonable on the aero-setup, but will 57" be enough of a headstart to Dombro over the 52km route?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0030_zps498d376d.jpg
Dombro is first in! He's passed Grajales who is clearly struggling, and he's set the bench mark at 1'17'19. If Vrecer is to take the Maillot Jaune, He must finish in no more than 1'18'15..

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0031_zps76c87a15.jpg
Grajales limps over the line +3'38 on Craddocks time. His GC position has slipped somewhat, how much we'll find out shortly.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0032_zps8c32ecf6.jpg
In comes Zanasca at +2'03. Considering the times of those riders behind him, that seems good enough for 3rd place! The only remaining question is Dombrowski or Vrecer for the top step!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0033_zpsb90998e9.jpg
1'18'15" the time to beat... Vrecer looks back as he crossed the line to see the timer stopped dead on...

I reckon he's in the stage top 10 and kept his jersey as if he wasn't in the top 10 of he stage you could just say its the stage top 10 and you wouldn't have to mention that he's been removed as he wouldn't have been.

I hope my logic makes sense to others there as it often doesn't.

1'17'57! He's done it! Robert Vrecer becomes the first rider to win the Underdog Tour, by just 19"! Joe Dombrowski will look at the penultimate day in the mountains, knowing full well that that's where he lost this race. Now however, it's time for the Slovenian to celebrate, with just the Champs Elyssés left to ride, where we shall conclude the races final battle.

The Maillot Vert.

Well done to Robert Vrecer Grin

Vrecer takes it. Slightly surprising for me.

Actually, funny to see the Rabo CT team again(first page). Guys like Kreder & Hofland now have 74 SP in the Daily DB Pfft

So here we are, Rambouillet. Just 131km remain in the underdog tour. It's been an exciting race and the Maillot Jaune has swapped shoulders many times. Now however just 1 competition remains. The two main players are Jonas Ljunblad and Denis Flahaut, separated by just 5points. Theoretically Andreas Stauff isn't out of contention, but in reality, the winner will be one of the top 2.

We join the action with just 6km remaining. (Due to my Screens not taking. DSmile In the intermediate sprint, Flahaut clawed back another point, to bring the gap between them down to just 4points. This final sprint will be all important in the points contest...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0038_zps4c35d703.jpg
6km... The catch is made! Now it's time to hand over, good luck to all involved!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0039_zps41e7a722.jpg
3.8km... As they make there final lap around the Arc d'Triomphe, RLM have a slightly more forward position, but Ljungblads Differdange train have the inside line, both trains with 3 men.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0040_zps979022c5.jpg
2.6km... 3 Trains now, Vorarlberg decide they too want to get involved! It's a straight run from here to the line, all that remains in who has most left...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0041_zps10258cb1.jpg
1700m... No sooner than they got to the front, Vorarlberg drop away once more. Barker isn't a true sprinter but decides to give it a go for UK Youth with 1700 to go. Both of the two main men keep the powder dry, Ljungblad behind Poos, and Flahaut behind Lalouette.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0042_zps481560ac.jpg
1200m... Poos is doing an incredible job, giving his leader 4 bike lengths advantage as get towards the point where they will launch. Merlo of Wit and Walmsley of Jamis have launched off the back of the Differdange train...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0043_zpsbeeae98a.jpg
800m... Ljungblad launches along with Flahaut who's currently poorly placed. Merlo is flying on the inside but has he got enough left after his early launch?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0044_zps668f8f45.jpg
500m... Flahaut is coming but Ljungblad is holding a high pace, this is getting tight!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0045_zpsac843d62.jpg
200m... It looks like Flahaut will take it!! Ljungblad just hasn't got the Frenchmans speed, but he's nearly at the line...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0046_zps13fb0af1.jpg
10m... He's going to do it! Denis Flahaut is going to steal the Maillot Vert right at the death! The battle for the Points Jersey goes right to the final centimetres, but in the end, the Frenchmans superior speed was enough to seal it at the death.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0047_zpsc24af98a.jpg
Denis Flahaut wins on the Champs Elyssés to steal the Maillot Vert! He's too exhausted for a celebration, but there's plenty of time for that after his trip to the podium! Ljungblad just couldn't match his turn of pace, and will lose the jersey by just 6points! Yet more drama here in the underdog tour!
