Univest GP

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Univestprofile.jpg

The Univest GP was one of our last chances to win valuable points in our push to win promotion to the Pro Conti division. The flat parcours meant it looked like one for the sprint men.

United Healthcare looked like our main rivals today, fielding a formidable sprint line-up including Forster, Van Poppel and Keough. Weissinger and Candelario would also be ones to watch.

Raleigh team

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Univestteam.jpg

Our sprinters had come out of the Tour in Britain in excellent shape so we had high hopes for a podium position at the very least today.

Race report

Just three riders were in the breakaway today: Gorenc (Adria Mobil), Midlarskey (Chipotle) and Driscoll (Jamis).

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Univestbreak.jpg
The day's break

The break were swept up early and the sprinters teams began jostling for position. A big crash in the peloton interrupted their plans 15km from the finish. Disastrously for Raleigh, both Briggs and Sulzberger were brought down and their race was effectively over.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/crash-1.jpg
Briggs and Sulzberger lie prostrate on the side of the road as the bunch speeds past

The crash left a front group of just 34 riders to battle it out for the win, including six Raleigh riders. With the team's best two sprinters out of the reckoning, the team looked to set up Holloway.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/REMAININGRIDERS.jpg
The crash resulted in a much reduced lead group

Another crash 7.5km out then brought down United Healthcare's main man Forster. The race was anyone's now!

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/crash2.jpg
Forster hits the deck

Raleigh looked strong with 4km left, with Hampton on front, followed by Oliphant, Horton and Holloway.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Raleighleadout-1.jpg
The Raleigh team went to the front with 4km to go

But Raleigh's diminshed sprint power started to show with just 2km to go as United Healthcare (left of picture) and Optum (right) surged in front.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/3way.jpg
UHC and Optum were looking to set up Keough and Candelario

Under the red kite it was Keough in front of Candelario, with Zabel, Kocjan and Frapporti also in the reckoning.

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/redkite.jpg
Keough hits the front with 1km to go

As the sprinters reached the line they got caught up with some backmarkers. So it's difficult to see from this picture, but Candelario took the sprint, pipping Frapporti, with Keough in third. Holloway managed a disappointing 11th.

@Ian Butler & francopell - the rankings aren't looking great for us after a dry month. There'll be an update after this race report...

Giro del Lazio
30.09

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Lazioprofile.jpg

Raleigh's last race of the season was this hilly semi-classic in Italy. It was first held in 1933 and has been won by some of the greats of cycling including De Vlaeminck, Moser, Mottet and Bugno.

Startlist

i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g387/lennybernstein/Laziostart2.jpg

The Italian teams brought plenty of firepower with them to the starting line. Di Luca, Gatto, Rujano and Serpa were amongst the favourites today.

The shape of our two best punchers, Oliphant and Holohan wasn't great today, but they would still represent our best hopes for a good season-end.

Race report

Nine riders escaped early on to form the day's break.

The nine escapees try to maintain their lead

The bunch caught the break quite some distance from the finish. Jose Serpa was the first to make a move, launching a powerful attack.

Serpa is the first of the favourites to make a move

Serpa's attack resulted in 14 riders going clear of the bunch. Both Oliphant and Holohan missed the move and were caught in no-man's land as they tried to bridge across.

The Raleigh pair weren't far behind the lead group as they went under the 5km banner.

The Raleigh pair were tantalisingly close to the lead group at 5km

Shortly after, Sabido was the first of the leaders to make a move, with Serpa following his move.

Serpa jumped clear of Sabido and was clear with just 3km to go.

Serpa goes for a solo win

Serpa was reeled in however by a chase group of four riders: Baliani (Nippo), Failli (Farnese Vini), Masciarelli (Acqua e Sapone) and Bisolti (Team Idea). Failli then took advantage of a momentary lull in the pace to burst clear.

Failli held on to finish 16 seconds clear. Baliani came in second with Serpa getting a deserved third. Oliphant and Holohan never could quite catch the lead group and finished 15th and 16th respectively.

September News

September saw the team compete in its toughest race so far, the Tour of Britain. The team produced some strong performances, including a second and third from Briggs on stages 1 and 8, the mountains jersey from Holohan, and 8th overall from Hampton. Unfortunately a combination of back luck and back form meant the team failed to make an impression in its final two races at Univest and Lazio.

Once again, Raleigh's rider of the month is Oliphant. A gutsy ride on stage 7 of the Tour of Britain saw him grab fifth after being in the break all day and then trading blows with Evans, Voeckler and Boasson Hagen in the stage finale. His perfomance was rewarded a placing of seventh overall.

Disappointment for Raleigh as the team remain 44th in the CQ team rankings, four places outside of where they need to be to gain promotion to the Pro Conti division. With no races left for Raleigh this season, they'll need to wait at least another season before they can join the ProConti ranks.

The new Raleigh-Oakley partnership will be busy putting their own plans in place for next season. They have employed the team's first two coaching staff to support rider development. And the management will be sitting down with the riders to develop their individual race plans.

End of Season Wrap-Up #2

Raleigh's third year in the pro peloton can be deemed a success. With a small squad of mainly relatively unknown domestic riders, the team has punched well above its weight at times.

The team collected 11 wins altogher, with a suite of other great results to boot. Perhaps the most impressive result was Oliphant's magnificent solo victory in the Beaumont Trophy. Briggs won three times in as many days at the beginning of May (GP of Moscow, Ronde van Overijssel stage 2 and GC). And Holohan came within a whisker of becoming British road race champion. Some fine memories indeed for the team.

Oliphant's win in the Beaumont Trophy was the highlight in a stand-out season for the Scot

Both Briggs and Oliphant proved themselves to be worthy leaders of the team, providing strong results throughout the season. Perhaps the revelation of the season, however, was young Brennan Townshend who unexpectedly shone for team almost from the beginning of the season. At just 18 year of age he won three KOM competitions, fifth place overall at Le Triptyque des Monts et Chateaux and a spectacular victory in the mountains on stage 5 of the Tour of the Gila.

www.cyclosport.org/uploads/Henry/Moor2sea/b3212.jpg
Townshend was the revelation of the year for Raleigh

Of course, the team did have faint hopes of achieving promotion to the Pro Continental division this season. This was not so much an expectation but a hope driven by the team's strong performances throughout the season. As we'll see in the third and final installment of the season wrap-up, the team didn't quite have the firepower in the end. With a larger, stronger squad next season, the team will start 2013 with renewed conviction that they can make it to the next level in the near future.

End of Season Wrap-Up #3

On the world stage, several riders stamped their name on cycling history. In the Grand Tours, Michele Scarponi showed that 2011's 'win' in the Giro d'Italia was no fluke by taking the 2012 title ahead of Jakob Fuglslang and Rigoberto Uran. Alberto Contador made a fine come back from suspension to win the Vuelta.

It was Vincenzo Nibali's win in the Tour de France that really caught the eye, the Italian finally coming of age to take La Grand Boucle ahead of Bradley Wiggins and Andy Schleck.

Nibali had to get used to the media's glare after his win in Le Tour

The stand-out performer in the classics, Tom Boonen, was a worthy winner of this season's Velo D'Or. The Belgian was an irrepresible form all season, demonstrating his consistency by topping the CQ Rankings. Undoubtedly his most memorable performances were his brilliant Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix wins.

Other notable performers were: Rodriguez, who topped the WorldTour rankings and grabbed a win at Il Lombardia; Cavendish, who won more races (19) than any other rider this season; and Team Sky, who won 57 races and topped both the World Tour and CQ Rankings.

End of Season Wrap-Up #4

The final part of the end of season wrap-up looks at some of the major transfer news. Undoubtedly the biggest move sees Tour de France winner Vincenzo Nibali move from Liquigas to Astana. This is a real boost for Astana's GC hopes, who are also bolstered by the arrival of Lieuwe Westra.

cdn4.media.cyclingnews.futurecdn.net//2012/04/22/2/pic274094240_600.jpg
Vincenzo Nibali shook hands with the Astana team to agree the biggest transfer deal in procycling this season

Farnese Vini have prepared for World Tour status by strengthening their squad with two of Italian cycling's biggest stars: Enrico Gasparotto and Ivan Basso. Garmin will be a sprint team to be reckoned with as Alexander Kristoff and Ben Swift join Tyler Farrar and co.

Omega Pharma - Quickstep have really flexed their financial muscle by signing Robert Gesink, John Degenkolb and Matthew Hayman. With Tom Boonen and Tony Martin also on their squad, they look like they can now compete on all fronts: Grand Tours, sprints, classics and time trials.

Saxo Bank have also splashed the cash by signing three very strong riders. Sep Vanmarcke will boost their strength in the classics and Kreuziger will be a great right-hand man for Contador and a stage race contender in his own right. And in Arnaud Demare they have signed probably the most promising sprinter in the peloton.

Thanks dude, much appreciated. I converted the file into a .tga file but it won't work for some reason? It might be because the file size comes out smaller than the size of the other .tga jersey files in the database? I have PM'd you about it in any case. If you could provide a .tga file that would be awesome.

Or if anyone else can help me convert the jersey into a suitable .tga that would be magic too Smile

2013 squad presentation coming up a little later...

@Ian Butler, sutty68, Miguel98, baggieboys32 - really appreciate the kind feedback and encouragement. Looking forward to an even better season in 2013 once we get our team jersey sorted! Smile
