Dominik Nerz: The Third Year
sutty68
losing 45s on a TTT is not a bad result at all Wink

Ian Butler
Ag2r rode so fast that the cameras weren't able to catch a photo of them

Nice one Pfft

PCM rulezz
Decent start for the team
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

At least you didn't finish last....

I've been away for a few days but now I'm back, going to play the second stage soon, the report should be up sometime today.

@ fcancellara: Yeah, it's really weird. The whole team was at 99% and they were almost perfectly drained at the finish... Nevertheless 45 seconds on a team like Ag2r... But oh well...

@ sutty: Yup, I thought so, too Wink Especially with the big gaps that are expected in the coming mountain stages.

@ PCM rulezz: Thanks, it really was.

@ dienblad: Wouldn't have been the first time Pfft

Giro del Trentino - Stage 2

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage2_zps59da3b93.jpg

The riders hit the mountains today. With two big ascents, we can expect some nice gaps and a newly shaped GC.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/myplan_zpsaa921d55.jpg

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/nerz2_zps39e2a092.jpg

Although my shape is getting better every day, I'm still far from my best. And I'm guessing that most of the other contenders are in better form as well, so I'm really not sure what to expect from today. Depending on how it goes, I think I would be satisfied with a Top 10 result, but of course I'm hoping for a bit more.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/livetickersmall_zps74e1edeb.jpg

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-1_zpsc14ece8f.jpg
1One kilometer into the race, Valerio Agnoli attacks. He pulls Mauro Santambrogio (BMC) and Emanuele Vona (Farnese) with him.151
.
11Too many riders try to join them, though, and the pack pulls everyone back.141
.
20Several further attemps, including two trys of Damiano Caruso, have been unsuccessful. Still no break.132
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-2_zpsb0ef52e5.jpg
47On the first smaller ascent, a five men break including Caruso managed to break free and get an advance of four minutes. Markus Fothen (NetApp) and Bob Jungels (Leopard) are other names in this group.105
.
69The advance peaked at six minutes and is decreasing now already.83
.
101Dimitri Muravyev (Type 1) and Sergio Henao (Sky) try to escape from the peloton and bridge the gap to the escapees.51
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-3_zps2489188d.jpg
108Now that is interesting: Among the riders that joined Henao and Muravyev is Michele Scarponi (Lampre). They are already 1'30 in front of the peloton, a dangerous situation for the other teams!44
.
110With Scarponi coming closer, Damiano Caruso tries to escape solo. But he only gets a small gap …42
.
1115,5 kms from the first mountain sprint, the group around Scarponi caught up with the escapees. These 12 riders are now 3 minutes in front of the peloton, Caruso is another 35 seconds in front.41
.
112It's surprisingly Quick·Step that is doing the pace in the peloton, Thomas De Gendt seems to feel strong. The effect of their work is not too strong, though.40
.
113Caruso eventually had to give in and dropped back to the group.39
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-4_zpsa40a8a4b.jpg
114Despite the advance decreasing a bit, Ivan Basso (BMC), the top favorite, attacks!38
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-5_zpsac6d1275.jpg
115The roles in the UniCredit squad are clear: Janez Brajkovic took the lead and works for Dominik Nerz now.37
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-6_zps3ed214ef.jpg
124Daniele Pietropolli wins both mountain sprints. Over the main climb of the day, he's leading a trio with Henao (Sky) and Failli (Farnese). They lead with about a minute to the group Scarponi and Basso, the pack is another 1'20 behind.28
.
144Mostly due to the work of Sky and Ag2r, the group with the favorites has been reeled in. The leading trio is still a minute in front at the bottom of the final climb.8
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-7_zps177298d5.jpg
146Thomas De Gendt starts a series of attacks, with Basso and Nerz, among others, following in the process.6
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-8_zps08c71f88.jpg
147Basso managed to get a little gap, the others fell back. Now Janez Brajkovic tries to follow.5
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-9_zps2aa9b318.jpg
150A surprisingly large group enters the last 2 kms together. Brajkovic evidently overpowered and tries to hang on at the back, and Nerz doesn't look too good either.2
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-10_zps792b5ee4.jpg
151Into the last kilometer, a trio got a small advance. Rob Ruijgh (Vacansoleil), overall leader Christophe Riblon (Ag2r) and GreenEdge's Albasini.1
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-11_zps5326ba49.jpg
152And Ruijgh makes it. He also takes over the lead in the GC.0
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/2-12_zpsf939b983.jpg
152Dominik didn't have much energy left but stayed in the front group, just like Brajkovic.0

Top 10, huh? Well that was awkward. My legs felt a lot worse than I hoped for. Plus, there were two surprising things about this stage: Firstly, the last climb wasn't even closely as hard as we thought, thus no gaps. Secondly, the earlier attacks were fruitless, which is why none of the favorites was able to challenge for the stage win. Janez and I both had no energy left after our attacks.

So what's the lesson for tomorrow? Well, the final climb will be much steeper, much harder. But: It's quite probable that again attacks from too far out won't be successful. We'll see how it works out.

So far,

not the result we were expecting from Uni Credit. Dominik's teammates set the bar really high with their results.

@ PCM rulezz: Yeah, it was a weird result, but could have been because of extreme difficulty. Ian Butler had a more realistic result in his story...

@ Ian: Thanks a lot Smile Always great to hear that, especially from another story writer!

@ sutty: Yep. Something quite unusual these days at UniCredit Wink

@JuanMotr: They did indeed. And of course we weren't satisfied with the result. Still, you have to see that it's probably the first race this year where our leaders aren't in good shape.

Anyway, here's the next report, sorry for the short delay:

Giro del Trentino - Stage 3

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage3_zps5092006f.jpg

In contrary to yesterday, the final climb is extremely steep. Again, it is not too long, though, and it's followed by a short descent, so we'll have to see if bigger gaps are going to be created.

Still not in top shape, but I hope that I'll have better legs than yesterday and that I'll be able to keep up with the front as long as possible. We have learned from the last stage and we're not going to follow any earlier attacks, at least if they come from bigger groups. In this field, the race is really hard to predict.

0Just like yesterday, Valerio Agnoli is the first man to attack!158
.
7He leads a three men group 1'30 in front of the pack. Numerous riders are split behind them.151
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-1_zpse329b2e8.jpg
23On the first smaller descent of the day, a six men group around Agnoli leads with two minutes and seems to stay clear. Other names are Carlos Sastre (Type 1) and Luca Mazzanti (Sky).135
.
62Nothing much has happened on the flat part towards the Lumini so far. The break has increased their lead to six minutes, Vacansoleil and strangely Orica are in control of the peloton.96
.
78The pack has already started to rise the pace. Probably because of Luca Mazzanti, who finished within the top group yesterday and sits in 11th position overall, only 24 seconds back.80
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-2_zps77fc2bae.jpg
106The escapees start the first categorized climb of the day with less than three minutes of advance to the Vacansoleil-led peloton. Dominik Nerz rides close to the front, just behind overall leader Rob Ruijgh.52
.
113Agnoli crosses the top of the mountain in third position. Two minutes of advance left.45
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-3_zpsafb7789a.jpg
142Quick·Step and Ag2r joined the relay at the front of the peloton. Both the break and the final climb are coming closer.16
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-4_zps447f81cb.jpg
147It is on! 8 kms at a maximum slope of 18 %! Carlos Sastre opens the huge climb with a strong acceleration!11
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-5_zps6c80d7ad.jpg
147In the peloton, it's Yury Trofimov (Astana) who sets the first attack, followed by Chris Anker Sorensen (Nokia) and Daniel Moreno (Katusha).11
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-6_zps284f01ee.jpg
148The escapees are almost caught as Rob Ruijgh and Michael Albasini attack! How will the other favorites react?10
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-7_zps693515e3.jpg
149Dominik gets caught behind Ag2r's Hartmann as Ivan Basso attacks!9
.
151Nerz gets blocked further and loses more positions. What a pity!7
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-8_zps8f45a203.jpg
153Motivated by Didi the Devil, Dominik does damage control. He leads a small group around Christophe Riblon but is already almost two minutes behind the leaders.5
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-9_zpsad505d1d.jpg
155Thomas De Gendt (Quick·Step), Ivan Basso (BMC) and Daniel Moreno lead over the top of the mountain. Ruigjh and Trofimov follow, at + 45'. Only a short descent to go!3
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-10_zps15848173.jpg
158Daniel Moreno wins the final sprint, De Gendt finishes second and overtakes the GC lead.0
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/3-11_zps3f4da2e1.jpg
158Dominik Nerz broke free from his group on the last ascending meters and saved a couple of meters into the finish – but of course doesn't get a time gap. But oh well. He comes in 11th and takes over the white jersey.0
.
159Janez Brajkovic has a really bad day and finishes 22nd, about four and a half minutes back.0

Damn Ag2r! Damn them! Argh!

Okay, had to get that out of my system. But really, that was so unlucky today. First, I got stuck behind Nicolas Hartmann, but I manage to somehow get around him and limit the losses. But then Jean Christophe Peraud decides to almost stop completely right in front of me and once I am able to overtake him on those narrow roads, I find myself somewhere around position 30 or 35.

What has happened afterwards at least leaves me optimistic towards future challenges. I climbed the second half faster than the leaders around Ivan Basso and ripped the 20 men group in which I started my pursuit to pieces. All that considering I'm not in top shape, that was pretty decent.

Also, I still have the young riders jersey, which is more than a consolation price. And I'm 1'12 away from the Top 10. Hard but maybe not impossible tomorrow. I will do everything I can!

Yours,

Ian Butler
A hard day at the office.
He put in a great performance despite the box-in. And seeing his talent in the mountains is more important than any result, he can build on that for the coming years!
Great job, and it's "only" the Giro del Trentino, the real work is yet to come, let's hope he learns from his mistakes and doesn't let himself get boxed in anymore!

PCM rulezz
Too bad you get boxed in, but that's cycling.
I hope Dominik can hold that white jersey
Winners never quit, quitters never win.

It's difficult not to be happy when you're surrounded by Belgians. - Mark Cavendish

@ Ian: Thanks Smile Indeed, the big Giro is yet to come, it's then when it counts. But his performance was indeed quite remarkable afterwards. And usually, he could outclimb at least half of the riders in the Top 10... We'll see what he can do the next stage.

@ PCM rulezz: Yeah, those things can happen. And I'm quite optimistic about the white jersey. Only Cattaneo can still endanger him, and he shouldn't be a threat to Dominik.

No, that's PCM..... Really bad that Dominik got boxed in by someone who finished 12 minutes behind the winner eventually. All you can do, is to be very, very attentful the last 2km before the foot of the climb, and during the entire climb, and hoping (even praying) that when breakaway riders get caught, you are positioned on the right (meaning: not wrong) side of the road....

Giro del Trentino - Stage 4

The final day has arrived and it brings the riders another mountain top finish. The final climb isn't very long and not too steep either, but the approach is long and slightly ascending, so it might be quite a tiresome day.

My form is getting better and better, I'm beginning to feel quite well. I hope that I can show myself today and maybe get into the Top 10, bringing this race to a conciliable end. And of course I'd like to keep the white jersey.

0A familiar picture in the past days: The flag is still being waved and UniCredit is already on the attack. Today, it's Damiano Caruso.176
.
12Caruso leads a seven men group three minutes in front of the peloton. Several riders try to bridge the gap.164
.
42The group consists of twelve riders now. The pack is taking it easy, being seven minutes behind. Astana's Sergey Renev (24th, + 5'42) is the virtual overall leader.134
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-2-1_zpsbd3423f0.jpg
69Dominik has passed a quiet day so far, enjoying his shiny white jersey. But now, the peloton has increased the pace, led by Quick·Step.107
.
107The peloton is laying down a fast pace and the advance firstly drops under five minutes again – a strange moment to attack for a trio around Christian Knees (Sky). But they get away and chase the escapees.69
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-3-1_zps5afacb8e.jpg
135Under the high pressure of Quick·Step, the pack stretches enormously.41
.
144Knees and his two companions made the catch. 15 riders, some strong climbers, three minutes of advance left – they might actually stand a chance …32
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-4-1_zps389f96aa.jpg
157Still a long way to go, but Ivan Basso (3rd, + 19'Wink attacks! Yury Trofimov (Astana, 5th, +49'Wink follows!20
.
162Other guys like Scarponi (Lampre) or even overall leader De Gendt (Quick·Step) attacked as well, but as we're used to from stage two, they're all brought back.15
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-5-1_zpsadba01cf.jpg
166Into the last 10 kms, Nerz aims not to make the same mistake as yesterday and tries to stay clear from possible blocks. Protected by Brajkovic, he is at the front of the pack, coming closer to the escapees.10
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-6-1_zps085f15d3.jpg
168As soon as the escapees are caught, it's Wout Poels (Vacansoleil) who attacks, followed by a couple of minor favorites.8
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-7-1_zpsd5618307.jpg
170Basso attacks again, Nerz stays calm. When is the right moment to make a move?6
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-8-1_zpsdd17e20e.jpg
173Basso still has a small advance in front of a 25 men group including Dominik and all other better riders. 3
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-9-1_zps1d481f72.jpg
175Facing the last kilometer, Basso and Daniel Moreno (Katusha) are leading while Dominik is fighting at the back of the group, it doesn't look like he's able to do more today.1
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/4-10-1_zpsd3ba7c91.jpg
176Moreno wins the stage and the GC, both in front of Ivan Basso. Dominik Nerz comes in last of the chasing group, on place 26. He climbs two places in the overall but probably won't be happy with that.0

I don't really know what to say. At one moment, I'm feeling great at the front of the peloton, thinking about following Basso's attacks, the next second my legs implode and everyone's passing by. Very weird. I guess I'm still not in the shape needed to beat those guys. Still, finishing behind Michael Albasini and Daniele Pietropolli in a mountain top finish hurts.

But life is not all guns and roses, and it will get better. Oh, and it's not like this has been a complete desaster for me: 15th overall and the white jersey is something to work with in a preparation race.

Janez however was pretty down today in the tour bus and apologized multiple times for not being up for it today and not being able to help me. He told me that in the last two days, his legs felt horrible, not like they should have been, even in his shape. He leaves Italy on a 25th place.

We all leave Italy now for some days. We have three days without racing and then we'll start at the Tour de Romandie. I'm looking forward to my first World Tour race this year, the last big test before the Giro.

I'll see you in Switzerland!
