Championnat de France (RR): Chantonnay - Chantonnay: 247.6km
The tricolour jersey would be up for grabs today. Current wearer, Dimitri Champion will have to relinquish the right to wear it, unless he can find victory again.
A circuit in and around Chantonnay, the hilly course will be difficult, and it is hard to look beyond a puncheur for the day. Sylvain Chavanel, Benoît Vaugrenard, and Brice Feillu are being mentioned as potential winners. Coming off a steady Tour de Suisse, Sébastien Joly is also being touted as a challenger.
However, the favorite has to be 2004 champion Tommy Voeckler.

The day started with riders from the lesser-known teams attacking to try to get in a break. Such moves are great exposure for such teams, but can often be dangerous in national championships, when many teams are far from complete. Sensing this danger, Saur - Sojasun, who had a full squad, moved to the front in order to control the race, not allowing a break to gain an insurmountable lead.
Saur riders at the front of the race, a common sight during the early goings.
When the riders came through the center of Chantonnay, the crowd was electric. A great atmosphere for such an event.
A great scene in Chantonnay.
As the race progressed, no real breakaway formed, mostly due to the work done by Saur - Sojasun in the beginning and Bbox Bouygues Télécom towards the middle and later parts of the day.
In order to keep control, the pace of the day was too hard for many of the riders. The lead group had been whittled in half.
However, the pace was not high enough to dissuade attacks from the stronger riders towards the end of the day. The first to make an attempt was newly crowned time trial champion Christophe Moreau. Jérôme Pineau would follow the move. They were 14km out.
Moreau and Pineau take off in hopes of glory.
Bbox quickly closed down their move. Unlike Saur - Sojasun, who had lost 4 riders from the lead group, Bbox were still looking strong. This put Joly on notice, keeping a watchful eye on Voeckler.
Then, with 11km left, Voeckler was off. Joly was right on his wheel.
Joly would not let Voeckler out of his sights.
Despite this, Voeckler's attack was too strong. Joly could not keep up with the popular rider.
Pineau, who was likely still recovering from his earlier attack, was a little late in reacting, but managed to reach Joly. The two would need to work together to bring back Voeckler.
Joly and Pineau chase Joly up the hill.
With 5km left in the day, Joly and Pineau connected with Voeckler. In addition, Brice Feillu had joined the riders to form a group of 4. They had a slender lead of 20" over the main field.
The four leaders go under the 5km banner, hoping to hold off the peloton.
At this point, there was only flat terrain remaining. Nonetheless, with 4km to go, Joly attacked.
Heading into the final straight, he had a small lead of around 10 seconds over the charging field.
Joly working extremely hard to stay away.
As the sprint opened up, Joly still maintained his 10 seconds margin. Despite being extremely exhausted, he had only 500m to before victory.
Behind him, Voeckler had found teammate Steve Chainel was able to get a lead-out for the final sprint. Nevertheless, he still found himself several bike lengths behind with the road running out.
Voeckler digs hard with Joly up ahead.
100m to go, Joly seemed to be stuck in cement. He couldn't turn his legs fast enough, and would be passed 50m from the line by Voeckler. He would even be pipped at the line by Pineau. A bold move that did not work.
But the plaudits had to be given to Voeckler, who expertly judged his fitness and used the strength of his team to his advantage. He will do the tricolour jersey proud.
Voeckler welcomes the cheer after a great sprint.

Thanks for the sympathy all. Voeckler was sprinting probably twice as fast as Joly. I just sat there watching it, not being able to do anything

Wrap-Up
La Grand Boucle.
The 97th edition saw Alberto Contador overcome a huge deficit to take his 3rd victory (2007, 2009, and now 2010) in the race. Contador, who suffered in the early stages of the race, stayed calm and slowly clawed back time from his two closest challengers, the Schleck brothers. Brothers Fränk and Andy had chances to claim overall victory, but could not take advantage of Contador's early mishaps.
Contador suffered on the stage into Spa, slippy on some oily roads. The race would not get any better as he lost a lot of time on the now famous cobbled stage to Arenberg. Next, heading into Station des Rousses, he still seemed a bit dazed by the time he had lost and could not keep up with the elite climbers on the day. However the rest day came at the perfect time for Contador, who would win Stage 10 immediately after, and begin to stamp his authority on the race, winning two more stages enroute to victory.
Fränk Schleck will have to look back at this Tour as a lost opportunity. Despite finishing 2nd, his best finish ever in the race, Schleck appeared either to lock up and became very conservative with Contador so far behind him. This gave Contador the opportunity to fight back and get within striking distance. Once there, Schleck was visibly uneasy. In Stage 18 he lost 1'38 to Contador, and then got obliterated in the final time trial, losing 2'44 to the Spaniard. Even still, over 3,642 kilometers, Fränk Schleck was only 17 seconds slower than Contador.
The younger, and perhaps more talented Schleck would finish 3rd, finishing 1'06 behind Contador. While he will take home another maillot blanc, given to the best young rider, Andy will undoubtedly look to Stage 13 to Mende. It was by far his worst day, finishing 4'20 behind winner Carlos Barredo, and over 4 minutes behind brother Fränk, and 2'34" behind Contador. Without such a bad day, Andy could easily have entered Paris wearing yellow.
Samuel Sánchez was the only other rider to finish within 10 minutes of Contador, finishing in 4th, 3'33 down. A bad day heading into Gap in Stage 11 ruined any podium hopes though.
Overall, this year's of the Tour was very exciting and featured 6 breakaway victories and 16 unique stage victories.
However the race was marred by 3 major injuries. First, Denis Menchov fractured his hip on Stage 2. Tour de Suisse winner Levi Leipheimer tore his patella on Stage 7. And lastly, recently crowned French national champion Tommy Voeckler dislocated his elbow on Stage 13.
Contador celebrates his momentous comeback victory with a glass of champagne.
Final GC:
1 Alberto Contador Astana 90h25'20 2 Fränk Schleck Team Saxo Bank + 17 3 Andy Schleck Team Saxo Bank + 1'09 4 Samuel Sánchez Euskaltel - Euskadi + 3'33 5 Jurgen Van den Broeck Omega Pharma - Lotto + 15'03 6 Ivan Basso Liquigas - Doimo + 15'16 7 Vincenzo Nibali Liquigas - Doimo + 23'32 8 Andreas Klöden Team Radio Shack + 24'39 9 Igor Antón Euskaltel - Euskadi + 24'42 10 Robert Gesink Rabobank + 31'31

Big time gaps there. I though Vandenbroeck was great reading the results, so 15min was more than expected.
Farrar dominating the sprints and Cavendish without any chance

I did too when I was following it. Thing is, in the stages he did well, he didn't gain much time, and got destroyed by Contador on some.
Up next, transfers...

Transfers
Today, Saur - Sojasun had a press conference to announce some changes to the squad for the upcoming 2011 season. They announced the signing of 7 new riders, including 2 neo-pros, and the contract decisions on 8 riders.
First, the riders who are being let go at the end of the year.
Fabrice Jeandesboz (25): Jeandesboz has served the team primarily as a water bottle carrier. A rider that has bounced around the French teams as a youth, Jeandesboz doesn't show much potential and the team thought a change of scenery might be best for both parties.
Rony Martias (29): About to turn 30, Martias has worked hard for the team this season. But as is the nature of cycling, there will not be space for him next year due to incoming riders. He's nothing special, but with his work ethic, Martias will do good work for another team next year.
Romain Matheou (21): Perhaps surprising given his age, but Matheou has not lived up the hopes of the team this year. He is one of the better sprinters on the team, but doesn't have a single top ten performance to show for it. Matheou no doubt has potential, but his salary demands don't match his ability.
Jérémie Galland (27): The decision to let Galland was one of mutual consent. Galland has performed well on several occasions for the team and is a good worker in the hills. However, he expressed the desire to lead a team, something he will not have the opportunity to do at Saur - Sojasun.
We wish all the riders well in their future endeavors.
Next, the renewals.
Julien Simon (24): Has been a useful teammate on all terrains this season and is still content to work for the team leaders. Saur - Sojasun management is happy to have Simon on board for the next two seasons.
Stéphane Poulhies (25): Poulhies has been the first part of Jimmy Casper's main sprint train. He doesn't possess top end speed, but has one of the best "engines" on the team, often doing the hard work of maintaining the top speed of the train before the actual sprint. Casper will be happy to have him back.
Cyril Lemoine (27): Lemoine has been a very important rider for the team so far. While not great in both, Lemoine is good in the hills and sprinting. This has made him a jack of all trades for the team. Back in February, he won Stage 2 of the Tour Méditerranéen in a spectacular breakaway. Three months later, in May, he served as Jimmy Engoulvent's lead-out man, helping his teammate to three victories and the overall title in the Circuit de Lorraine.
Jimmy Engoulvent (30): Speaking of Engoulvent, the team has re-inked him through 2012. He will continue to be Casper's main lead-out man, as well as get some opportunities of his own in smaller races. Engoulvent's great month of May has been a bright spot in a season that has seen only mediocre success.
The team is happy to have all these riders back for the next season, and more in some cases.
Now, the new riders. First, the neo-pros.
Maurice Sardou (22): Perhaps the prize of the U-23 circuit. Sardou, a native of Grenoble, a city insoutheastern France, has been called the next great French Tour rider. This is a title that has been heaped on numerous riders over the years, often burdening the individuals. However, Sardou has been flourishing so far. He is currently 2nd in U23 rankings behind dominant Kazakh sprinter Vladimir Sinelobov.
His notable results include an overall victory in the Ronde de I'Isard (two stage wins), a 2nd in the Tour de Berlin, a 2nd in the Giro delle Regioni, and a 3rd in Liège–Bastogne–Liège Espoirs.
Jean Latour (20): Latour hails from Péronne, a commune in the Somme department. Unlike Sardou, Latour is a classics prospect. This is an area the team hopes to improve, however not many French riders specialize in these races. Latour is good prospect, finishing 9th in Ronde van Vlaanderen Espoirs.
Both riders will join the team starting in 2011.
Last but not least, the recruited riders.
Cédric Pineau (25): Roubaix Lille Métropole
Pineau joins the team after only 1 season on the smaller continental squad Roubaix Lille Métropole. A former AG2R rider, the team has seen Pineau perform well in some of the smaller French races throughout the season. While this hasn't translated to any victories, the team believes he can be a valuable teammate, as well as continue to develop his skills.
Guillaume Bonnaford (23): AG2R La Mondiale
Bonnaford is a young rider the team believes can develop in a good puncheur and an all-around rider, in the mold of a Sébastien Joly. Bonnaford hasn't gotten many opportunities with AG2R and new team could be just what he needs. Depending on his progress, he may have some opportunities to lead a team in smaller races.
Mathieu Ladagnous (25): Française des Jeux
Ladagnous is a former, very successful, track cyclist. His transition to road is still ongoing, but it clear he has very strong legs and just needs a bit of direction to become a very good road rider. His promise has started to come through this season, with a 2nd in the GP de Plumelec-Morbihan, and an 8th in Circuit de la Sarthe-Pays de la Loire. Additionally, he is a strong time trialist, something the team sorely lacks.
Christophe Riblon (29): AG2R La Mondiale
Riblon recently completed the Tour with AG2R. While Grand Tours aren't necessarily his strength, he finished 58th. He has a number of top tens in French races this season in races such as the GP de Marseillaise and 5 Jours de Dunkerque, among others. His experience and skill will help boost the team's overall strength.
Benoît Vaugrenard (29): Française des Jeux
The biggest coup for Saur - Sojasun was wooing Vaugrenard away from FDJ. Vaugrenard is a similiar rider to Joly, if not stronger. The team did not pursue him because they were unhappy with Joly, but rather as an indication that the team hopes to make a push for ProTour status next season. In order to do so, the team needs victories, something only a handful of riders can provide. Vaugrenard will hopefully help in that matter next season.
A full overview of all transfers will be presented at the end of the season.
The press conference ended with Saur - Sojasun management announcing a team presentation in Paris in early January 2011.

Great transfers.
Not sure about the PCMDaily, but in my ASO career Bonnafond, Ladagnous and especially Vaugrenard are great transfers. Last is even competive in the Ardennes.

Thanks. I wanted to stay all-French and not many elite riders hit the market. The best four were/are Vaugrenard, Brice Feillu, John Gadret, and Pierrick Fédrigo. Gadret and Feillu were both pretty expensive, and I want to let Coppel, Hivert, and now Sardou develop. I'd have loved Fédrigo, but he was too expensive.
I'm trying to stay as realistic as possible. All in all, I think my budget has increased by €5,000 (or something around then).

I agree with the other guys, nice that you stay all-french. Bonnafond, Riblon, Ladagnous and especially Vaugrenard is really good transfers and should bring you some victories the next season.
