Big flaw in the Worlds riders per country allocation.
Iran gets 6 riders, yet Britain gets only 3 - the same as Tunisia!
Luxembourg are allocated 9 riders, but have only got 4 protour riders!
Also, the likes of Hungary, Estonia, Moldova, Serbia, Albania, Ecuador, Bolivia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Iran, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, China, Algeria, and Kenya all have riders in the U23 race - yet Britain and Sweden have none!?
What! double
Someone needs to sit down and seriously reconsider how they hand out WC placings. Anyone understand why Iran have 6? Maybe they run UCI approved races within Iran and don't let anybody else participate because I'm struggling to name one ProTour Iranian rider. |

Iran is high on the Asian rankings. therefore 6 riders.
Great Britain did pretty much nothing all year compared to most other european countries. therefore, 3 riders.
also, which british riders would be at the U23 worlds? |

Well I think I read that only non Protour riders can enter?
Geraint Thomas for sure. Much more talented than many other U23 riders, - and that's not just me being biased. He has been racing in the main UCI races and not in the smaller U23 races which seem to give points for World U23 qualification.

Sticking with the Barloworld theme, Ben Swift. I think he has raced for the Great Britain team in U23 races with some strong top 10 results, particularly in sprints. He won the final stage in the Giro delle Regioni aswell as the overall KoM.

Ian Stannard - T-Mobile stagiare. The last british stagiare at T-Mobile was Cavendish, Stannard may not be as good as Cav but is still more worthy of a spot at the U23 worlds than some riders from 'obscure' countries that will get to ride. 4th Overall in the U23 race: Thüringen-Rundfahrt, including 3rd in Stage 2.

The point I made originally was that so many countries with cyclists not as good as Britain get spots - and Im sure those Brits could easily outclimb riders from many countries that are entered.

I made the "who does britain have" as an aside.
there's a defined qualification method. the brits knew how high in the rankings they had to finish to get spots. they didn't. happens. |

True, it is probably British Cyclings fault that they did not enter more U23 races but I think Britain have paid the price for not having strength in depth.
Britain produces very few cyclists, they arent like other European countries who have many of all ages and all levels of skill. The Brits that do make it to Europe are generally there because they are our best U23 riders, and they soon get snapped up by the bigger teams - who arent racing in races were ranking points might be easier, or being ProTour, arent eligible for points towards the Nations standings.

good point.
I also think it's funny the way you keep referring to "Europe" as if it's an entirely different place
not to take anything away from your point though. |

Thats how it is in cycling terms though. If a British rider is good enough he will go across the channel and ride for European teams, if not they just ride on the track or in the British Premier Calendar.
We do like to think of ourselves as a seperate continent though

Britain's also not very big cycling country (road wise certainly), thats why we only produce a few good riders.
British cycling though needs to up their game, promote cycling more, they just sit back and let the climate change guys rub it in.

Nicole Cooke has won the British Womens Road Race championships
again..
CW says
NICOLE Cooke (Raleigh-Lifeforce Creation) won her seventh consecutive National Road Race Championship at Saffron Waldren in Essex on Sunday after powering away from her rivals in the closing miles.
A break of eight riders got clear of the bunch with around 40 miles left and, after Joanna Rowsell had punctured and fell back to the bunch, the seven remaining riders forged on.
Three Global Racing Team riders ensured the pace was kept high in the break, but they were powerless to stop Cooke striding away with six miles remaining.
She opened up a gap of 59 seconds between then and the line, with Rachel Heal (Webcor Builders) taking the sprint for second from Helen Wyman (Global RT).
See this week's Cycling Weekly for a full report from the Women's Road Race Championship.
Women's Road Race Championship (Saffron Walden, Essex).-
1 Nicole Cooke (Raleigh-Lifeforce Creation) 109km in 3-44-39
2 Rachel Heal (Webcor Builders) at 59sec
3 Helen Wyman (Global RT)
4 Catherine Hare (Rapha Condor RT)
5 Nikki Harris (Global RT)
6 Emma Pooley (Team Specialized) all same time
