The day after the Omloop, the riders who love cobbles (and some that are forced by their teams) take part in Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne. It's a 1.1 race, with the hills and cobbled section halfway the race, so mostly the race ends in a mass sprint.
Last year, a small group managed to stay in front, with Tom Boonen making a back to back win 1 day after the Omloop.

The race

148km to go
A group of 9 riders has gone on an adventure in truelly awful weather. Just as yesterday, the rain is pouring down. None of the leading 9 are decent cobblers, with riders as Chris Anker Sörensen (BMC) and Cerdic Pineau (FDJ) in it.
img600.imageshack.us/img600/9235/6148km.jpg

78km to go
Climbing the Oude Kwaremont, with 78km to go, the lead of the BOTD is 7'35. The peloton has taken it easy so far, but at the Oude Kwaremont the speed increases and the peloton is starting to break into pieces.
img100.imageshack.us/img100/5131/778km.jpg

45km to go
Riding at the last cobbled section of the day, the first part of the peloton has shrunken to 35 riders, who are 2'17 behind the leading group. 1'32 behind the peloton follows a 2nd big group, including some big names as Bobbie Traksel and especially Juan Antonio Flecha. The Spanish arrow lost contact with the first group due to bad placing in one of the climbs, and luckily for him, also the teams of Wallonie and Landbouwkrediet are doing the chase in this group.
img443.imageshack.us/img443/31/845km.jpg

27km to go
The first part of the peloton is closing the gap to the leading group, and they're caught with 27km to go. But the 2nd peloton, with Flecha in it, is also closing, about '40 behind.
img259.imageshack.us/img259/7585/927km.jpg

14km to go
The pace drops in the first peloton, so the group with Flecha is capable in closing the gap. WIth 14 km to go, already at the final circuits in Kuurne, ALessandro Ballan attacks.
img831.imageshack.us/img831/2599/1014km.jpg

8km to go
Ballan gets caught, and with less than 10 kilometres to go, Hayden Roulston (Accent.Jobs), Johan Vansummeren (Garmin), Maarten Wynants (Rabobank), Sylvain Chavanel (Garmin) and again Ballan attack. But at this exact moment, Matti Breschel gets a puncture a drops back. He shouts to his team mates to continue without him, as he won't make it back up front in time before the sprint.
Oh man, at this point we have to think about a plan B..... Who's having good legs, who can sprint?
img525.imageshack.us/img525/773/118km.jpg

3km to go
After a very short briefing, we decide to ride for Coen Vermeltfoort, who supposed to be the final lead out today for poor Breschel. With 3 kilometres remaining, our little train, with Terpstra leading out Maaskant and Vermeltfoort is about to catch Chavanel.
img171.imageshack.us/img171/6937/123km.jpg

600m to go
When Vermeltfoort starts his sprint, he has been passed by last year's winner Tom Boonen. Tommeke wants to make up for his mistake yesterday, when he missed the cut and had to chase too long to be able to sprint for the win,
img837.imageshack.us/img837/7411/13600m.jpg

Finish
Finishing between the back markers, To Boonen wins Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne for the 2nd year in a row. But his margin to the 2nd placed rider is only a hlaf wheel's length. The rider in 2nd place is Coen Vermeltfoort! Our Dutch sprinter scores the best result in his career. 3rd place is for Koen Barbé (Landbouwkrediet), just in front of Bernie Eisel (Sky) and Martijn Maaskant.

The winner

Word from the DS
Loosing your leader for the sprint with only 8km to go, is not a good thing. But the team switched very easy to plan B (well, we had only a plan A before the race, all cards at Breschel). And Vermeltfoort did an excellent job, getting the 2nd place behind a cobbles-legend!

FreitasPCM
Pity Breschel couldn't fight for the win, but at least, Vermeltfoort was there to deliver. Smile

sutty68
Oh so close for Vermeltfoort, pity the back markers spoilt his sprint for the line, still second place is a Great result for both him and the team, Well Done Smile

The same day as Kuurne - Brussel - Kuurne, another part of the cycling peloton starts in the Clásica de Almería in completely different circumstances: sun and 20 degrees!
Last year, the race with a few hill sin it, was won by Aitor Galdos, from Caja Rural.

The race
32km to go
3 riders form todays BOTD, with Dries Beats (Accent.Jobs), Silvere Ackermann (Barbot) and Ricardo Vilela (Onda). They get a maximum margin of 6'30 to the peloton. The peloton breaks into many pieces climbing the last hill of the day, the Alto de Turrillas, with the summit 57 kilometres before the finish.
A group of 39 riders is 3'37 behind the 3 leaders with 32km to go, and only Robert Gesink and Peter Sagan of our team are present. Because of this, we decide not to take part in the chase (hey, we really can't...), that gives the 3 leaders a great chance to stay in front!
img201.imageshack.us/img201/8510/632km.jpg

Finish
And as the first part of the peloton isn't capable in setting up a chase, the 3 leaders will ride for today's win. Ricardo Vilela attacks with 10km to go and creates a gap of 20 seconds. Ackermann and Beatse work together to catch the Portuguese rider, and do so with 2km to go. In the sprint, Beatse easily wins the sprint and takes the first professional win of his cycling career. Ackermann finishes in 2nd place, Vilela in 3rd.
Jure Kocjan wins the sprint for the 4th place at 1'17, with Peter Sagan finishing in 6th, after being a little bit unattentful as he knew the win was gone...

Word from the DS
The thing we are not happy about, is that only 2 riders could stay in the first part of the peloton of 39 riders. That's a bit disappointing. Losing the win to a breakaway wasn't strange after that, as we had to depend on the chase of other teams.

February review

Almost as usual, we had another good month. First Wilco Kelderman was too strong for his opponents at the green mountain and he won the Tour of Oman. The opening weekend of the cobbled season was great, with a win for Matti Breschel in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and a 2nd place for Coen Vermeltfoort in Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.
img339.imageshack.us/img339/5737/1february.jpg

Media awards
The rider of the month award goes to Europcars Cyril Gautier, winning a stage and the GC in both the Etoile de Besseges and the Tour de Haut Var.

Our goal
The win.

The race
Early in the race, a big group of 15 riders is in the attack, getting a maximum margin of 4'30. Most important riders in this group are Stijn Joseph (Topsport Vlaanderen), Matthew Busche (Radio Shack) and Pavel Brutt (Raboank). They get caught even before the final laps begin.
The next group to attack is a group with more dangerous riders for the win. Besides Busche and Joseph, this time also Frédéric Amorison (Landbouwkrediet) is present. As their lead grows to over 5 minutes with 40km to go, we have to send our domestiques to the front of the peloton. They work thier asses of, and only 2 kilometres before the finish, the breakaway gets passed by the sprinting peloton.
We set up a train for Matti Breschel, and the plan is working out perfectly. But when the last members of the breakaway get caught, Breschel gets blocked for a few moments, and one rider is using this advantgae and starts his sprint. Jens Keukeleire, who left the team last winter, is on the right side of the road and immediately creates a gap of a few metres to the Dane. And Keukeleire holds on untill the finish, taking the first win for his new Rabobank team! Breschel takes the 2nd place, with M&M's Tom Leezer taking the last place at the podium.

Word from the DS
This was a mistake Breschel has to learn from. He had to win Le Samyn, but made a wrong decision in chosing the left side of the road.. These things happen, let's hope he has learnt from it for the more important races.

Still thought Keukeleire was on your team when I saw him as today's winner. Pfft Anyway, second is still great. Smile

fcancellara
I don't like Keukeleire anymore for some reason Pfft...

@ FreitasPCM: I had to many sprinters. Kittel and Bos have higher stats, Ligthart equal and is better in the hills, Breschel a little bit less (78 vs 76), but is way better at the cobbles, and great talent Mulder has already 80, but needs to improve in Flat (I believe 63 or so) and stamina (also less than 70). So that's why I didnt offer him a new contract.

@ fcancellara: I'm okay with it. I like him as a cyclist irl and in the game, and he's a rider I'd sign in the future....

So unlucky for Breshel in the sprint Sad

Still, there is plenty of racing in March for him to make up for it Wink

Unlucky for Breschel, and in the Classica de Almeria report, Ricardo Vilela isn't spanish, is portuguese.

Our team
img835.imageshack.us/img835/1369/5teamp.jpg

The favourites
*** Daniele Callegarin (Team Type 1), Mauro Finetto (Liquigas), Marco Frapporti (Colnago).
** Daniele Pietropolli (Omega Pharma), Thomas De Gendt, Gabriele Bosisio (Liquigas).
* José Serpa (Astana), Robert Gesink, Fabio Felline (Nespresso).

Our goal
It'll be hard to achieve it, but a top 5 is the goal.

The race
72km to go
Tom Dumoulin is present in the BOTD, in a group of 12 riders. Other known riders are Rory Sutherland (Onfone), Tosh Van der Sande (Omega Pharma) and Assan Bazayev (Astana). They reach their maximum margin to the peloton in the first lap of the final circuit.
img824.imageshack.us/img824/2683/672km.jpg

16km to go
A few riders make the jump from the peloton to the leading group, and as a result, the pace in that group increases a lot. One of the victims is Dumoulin, who breaks in the penultimate ascend of the San Floriano del Collio.
8 riders enter the last lap with a lead of 56 seconds: Boscolo (D'Angelo), Bazayev, Klimov (Itera), Moletta (Lampre), Canuti (Colnago), Van der Sande, Sutherland and Bosisio (Liquigas).
img818.imageshack.us/img818/1760/716km.jpg

8km to go
The leading group gets caught and the first serious attack in the last climb is by Marco Frapporti (Colnago). He is followed by Matteo Cattaneo (Farnese Vini) and Daniele Pietropolli (Omega Pharma). Our riders are struggling to stay in the front of the first group, as the fitness is too low to battle for the win.
img191.imageshack.us/img191/4675/88km.jpg

5km to go
The 3 attacking Italians get caught and at the summit of the San Floriano del Collio, it's Daniele Callegarin from Team Type 1 with the next attack. Only José Serpa (Astana) can follow him and the 2 create a margin of '20 to the peloton.
img40.imageshack.us/img40/8121/95km.jpg

Finish
Callegarin and Serpa manage to stay out of reach of the peloton, and Daniele Callegarin wins the sprint. Behind Serpa, Marco Frapporti wins the sprint for the 3rd place, beating Mauro Finetto and the surprising Assan Bazayev, who was in the attack all day. Thomas De Gendt and Robert Gesink do a decent job, finishing in 8th and 9th.
