Aaah. finally back on the bike after 2 months suffering from mononucleosis! Feels great. Unfortunately the season is soon to be over here in the icy north. How is the conditions in other countries now? Spain and Portugal has perfect conditions the whole season I know, but what about GB and Benelux. Still ok temperatures?
Good to hear your back Here in South Africa we're only heading into summer now We don't even have snow here in winter, only on the mountaintops, but you can cycle all year round

Forced to buy a proper pump after my mini started playing up. Having gone for the well thought of Top Peak Joe Blow 2 floor pump am wondering why I didn't spend the £30 (approx €35) sooner.
I'm riding a hybrid so I only have to get the tyres to 80 psi but by god it's great replacing every 25 fevered pumps for 1 easy one.
However my joy was tempered somewhat by my 2nd rear puncture in as many weeks (cue 6km walk home) so looks like a new Armadillo is in order.
A bit of tyre advice please - I'm thinking when replacing 1 tyre (the fronts still fine) I should stick the newer one on the front for better grip and stopping power? I'm tempted to go for the lazy/cheaper option and just change the rear and then probably both will need changing together in around a year or so when I hope to be moving to a road bike anyway - is this a really silly idea?

Also can someone explain to me why entering a Strava Extender challenge suddenly motivates me to ride more?! The power of a virtual badge has resulted in my first saddle sore for 3 years... |

First time over 100ks. Feel really good. Rode past a group of screaming 12 year olds who were lining up for the One Direction concert about 6 hours before it opened..... |

@ianrussell : we had the tyres discussion a dozen of pages ago.
Basically, it's better to have the most grip at the front, so that's where you should install your new tyre.
I agree about Strava's distance challenges, I don't think I'd have ridden that much this August and September, had it not been for those.
By the way, I don't think you've joined our Strava group, or have you ? |

Thanks Aquarius, no I haven't joined and keep meaning to get round to it.
Congrats on breaking the 100km barrier Wogsrus.
With regard to exporting from Endo and importing to Strava I was pleasantly surprised it took all of 3 clicks

Just belatedly became aware that the 2014 Specialized entry level range comes with a new "Claris" (who comes up with these names?) groupset.
Looks nice for £600 (700 Euro's) and importantly the new groupset means no thumb shifters, everythings integrated on the drops https://www.cyclesuk.com/10491489/prod...black.aspx
Very tempting... |

Yes Claris is a horrible name but from memory its there 2300 groupset with a upgrade to 2400 without the thumb shift and now named Claris. It should work perfectly fine as a entry level groupset (shimano stuff at the lower end tends to be pretty good) and a good way to get you into road cycling. It s a nice looking bike.

Took a good look at it in store today and apart from anything mentioned previously the black paint job looks very nice and should be an added incentive to get out. On top of that it comes in around 4kg lighter than my current bike which is incidentally how much weight I've recently lost myself. With an 8kg+ advantage I've got no excuse to not be mounting some KOM assaults in the new year.
Will have to wait until then though as no storage space before that but the shop even offered me an interest free 2 year deal which means there is no way I'm going to resist at only £20 per month (after the deposit).
Roll on the new year! |

With the new road bike purchase in mind am (being a kid in a sweet shop and..) trying to get an essential shopping list together pre Christmas to maximise my "I actually want this" present haul. With that in mind I think I have all the gear I need except shoes, pedals and tyres.
What do people think about going for:
Shimano R540 pedals (apparently a good tension range to start off beginner friendly and gradually tighten up)
Shimano R078 shoes (seem like a decent budget option?)
Continental GP 4 Season tyres (seems to be the consensus here and elsewhere that these offer good puncture protection and decent all condition performance considering this)

Day off today and the sun was shining brightly, oh bliss! Ok so it was only 5C but seems to have been nothing but rain for the last month beforehand so I'll take it any day.
How's the Autumn into Winter riding going for the northern hemispherer's? No posts from south of the equator please, I can't take the news that someone else is enjoying 20C+ |

Haven't ridden outside for 4 weeks today. I might give it a try tomorrow though.
That's because of the days shortening, the temperature and mostly the rainy and windy conditions. Also because I've gone into more running again, but I've already managed to hurt my right adductors once more...
I've mostly been working on strength lately, as some close Strava observer might have guessed from my training logs. |

Today was the first day in three weeks with over 0 Celsius, and it has been 15! Don't really understand the norwegian weather... I have gotten used to a new mtb bike lately, but as I am still in really bad shape, I haven't crossed the 3hrs line yet. I still have some more weeks to get back in cycling shape before the snow arrives though. For road cycling it is too cold, haven't taken my road bike out since before I got sick, which means august the 8th. |

My 3 day adventure in the Victorian Alps and proof to folk outside of Australia that we do have mountains.
Day 1 https://www.strava.com/activities/9499...s/94993405
Day 2 https://www.strava.com/activities/9516...s/95169116
Day 3 https://www.strava.com/activities/9532...s/95326881
I only had one full day up there which was the Falls Creek ride on day 2 as I only got up there on Thursday midday and had to leave Saturday afternoon. It was a whole lot of fun

Wow, some serious elevation there, very nice rides. Still aching today?!
Enjoyed about 900m of vertical ascent over 60km on the weekend in some fine crisp, dry Autumn weather. A little way shy of your vertical ascent there though

Looks like three great days! And sick amount of elevation meters on the second. Only once I have gotten close to that amount, and that was in a much longer ride... I bet you are tired now, hopefully got your amount of rest in the days following! |

I was back on the bike the next day and yeah lacked a little "bounce" Did about 58 k's today and will be heading up tomorrow for a crack at this https://www.strava.com/segments/631265
Best elevation in a day was this little beauty of a ride https://www.strava.com/activities/8916...s/89163546 I was feeling it after that ride
