STAGE 3

Profile:

www.cyclingcoverage.com/images/stageprofiles/tdl2011s3profile.jpg

Favourites:

Jakob Fuglsang (AST), Christian Schroder (EUC), Rudy Verboven (EUS)

Race:

169km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0001_zpsad5ccc25.jpg
After Fuglsang's coup yesterday, what can we see today? The stage can go anywhere, to a mass sprint, a lucky break or a late attack.

165km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0002_zpsef50df52.jpg
It didn't take long before the first attacks. Commeye (AJW), Turgot (EUC), Zardini (BAR) and, suprisingly, Bos (BEL).

150km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0003_zps2095156b.jpg
Race update: We currently have a leading group of 8 riders. The 4 named earlier were joined by Bonnafond (ALM), Finetto, Proni (both VIN) and Perichon (BSE). They are only 1 minute clear of the peleton, so don't celebrate to early.

131km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0006_zps5ec002e2.jpg
They can celebrate now, the gap is over 4 minutes. Meanwhile, it has started raining in Luxembourg. Will this lead to crashes, like in the first stage?

123km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0007_zps56fb0da9.jpg
Yup, Velasco (CJR) is going to the ground, although the motorcyclist next to him is also a possible suspect. Chiarini (AND; 6th in GC) has had a puncture, but safely returned to the peleton.

118km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0008_zps041a2814.jpg
Proni wins the first mountain sprint ahead of Bonnafond and Commeye. Bos has been dropped by his compagnions, and the peleton, with Velasco, is 6 minutes behind.

115km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0009_zpsa9f2569d.jpg
The peleton has hit the hill, and there are some cracks in it. 12 riders, including GC-leader Fuglsang (AST), Izagirre (EUS), Roelandts (LTB), Schroder and Voeckler (both EUC), have a small gap to a bigger group, led by RadioShack. Other riders can't follow the pace at the back, but no big names so far.

106km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0010_zps6b54d5e0.jpg
The rain is getting heavier. The break is 1:40 ahead of Bos, who is 8(!) minutes ahead of the 'peleton'. RadiosShack managed bring back the group of 12. The peleton now counts 69 riders, with the highest rider not present being Pasqualon (BAR; 17th).

77km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0011_zpscfef3f5d.jpg
The peleton doesn't maintain a high speed today, because most dropped riders returned. What is more worrying however, is the gap to the break. Hold on to your seats please, 11 and a half minutes! Bos is only 1 minute behind the other 7. If things stay this way, Bonnafond (49th, +7'11) will be the new GC-leader.

72km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0012_zps392c0ca9.jpg
Tatarinov (RVL) has fallen!

52km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0013_zpsa0261f16.jpg
A close call, but Perichon edges out Bonnafond and Commeye for the second and final mountain sprint. Important, because he is only 7 seconds behind Bonnafond in the GC. The peleton has closed in to 9 and a half minutes, Bos is back to 3 minutes.

45km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0014_zps17342adf.jpg
Another group away from the peleton! 23 riders are away, with Battaglin (BAR), Chiarini, Van Drenthe (CJR), Schleck (RLT) and Verboven (EUS) missing.

37km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0015_zps8cdce939.jpg
Proni can have the intermediate sprint today, no real battle was needed. Bos has given up, nearly 6 minutes behind. The favourites group is about 2 and a half minutes behind him, Bonnafond is still provisional GC-leader.

25km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0016_zps026a033e.jpg
Bad news for some of the favourites, the rest of the peleton have caught up with them again. Bos is here now too, but Bonnafond is still provisional GC-leader, but it's getting tight.

13km to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0017_zpsaae169ab.jpg
No doubt the winner will come from this group, since they are 7 minutes and a bit ahead with only 13 kilometers to go. Bonnafond is still hoping on the yellow jersey, but he only has a few seconds left.

5500m to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0018_zps95ad6016.jpg
The looking has started, who can position himself the best for the sprint? The gap is 6 minutes and 50 seconds, Fuglsang will probably keep his jersey.

2500m to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0019_zps23369e04.jpg
Zardini is leading them into the final 2 kilometers, but there they will meet some riders far, far back. This can cause some chaos, watch out!

1000m to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0020_zps3608114c.jpg
1 kilometer to go and the sprint is on! But, please organizers, get those other riders out of there, they are seriously a problem here!

500m to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0021_zpsa03f5d37.jpg
Commeye has a gap, can he turn this into victory?

0m to go
i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0022_zpsdfe04409.jpg
Yes, he can! David Commeye wins the fourth stage (stage 3). Finetto finishes second and Perichon completes the podium. He is now 3 seconds ahead of Bonnafond, but the gap isn't big enough

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%204/PCM0023_zpsd7909e94.jpg
6 and a half minutes behind the winner, Roelandts, Colbrelli (VIN) and Verboven complete the top-10. Fuglsang finishes in this group, he keeps his leader's jersey. I bet he was sweating all day long.

Tour de Suisse – Stage 7

i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_7_zps5cbe4bca.jpg

Today we have a very tough mountain stage. It’s not a summit finish, but it’s a very long stage, just over 200 kilometer. The stage, and especially the last part, is full of climbs and downhills. The finish lays 10km after the summit of the Albulapass, a 18,5km climb of 6,6% on average. The climb doesn’t have any steep parts though, with a 10% maximum gradient.
This stage will likely inflict quite some gaps, due to the climb. Riders like Nibali and Hesjedal can gain some time on the downhill. Purito has a big gap though, and I can’t see him giving this away.

The Race
197km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_071_zpsa1a6f4c8.jpg
There are the first attacks! Brambilla(OPQ), Hoogerland(VAC) are in it, as are Chaves(COL) and Arroyo(CJR). It’s not the first time that they’re in.
196km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_072_zps15662639.jpg
Agnoli(AST) wants to be in the break as well today, and Dombrowski(SKY) and Nordhaug(BEL) follow.
189km -i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_073_zpsa530e49d.jpg
Nordhaug won the sprint. Meanwhile, De Greef(LTB), Cunego(LAM) and Landa(EUS) managed to join the break as well. They barely have a minute though.
177km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_074_zpsd9ec4132.jpg
The escapees are still fighting. Arroyo, Nordhaug, Brambilla and Cunego are still around 25 seconds in front of the others. However, they’re nearly 2 minutes ahead of the pack.
167km -
Finally the breakaway merged to 1 big group, mainly due to the efforts of Dombrowski and Landa. They have 3 minutes, so these guys will be the break of the day. Nordhaug is the only small GC threat, at 13’41, and only Hoogerland and Chaves have some KoM points(6 and 7, while Txurruka has 24).
150km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_075_zps3999e7de.jpg
Quite some interest in the KoM sprint. Chaves wins it, and De Greef and Brambilla round off the podium.
115km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_076_zps9576bb15.jpg
De Greef leads the front group through the IS. They have 7 minutes on the peloton now.
Katusha is the only one relaying in that said peloton.
87km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_077_zpse212056a.jpg
The front group starts the 1. Climb, with a 6’24 lead.
82km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_078_zps5be9215c.jpg
Due to a strong pace of 1 certain team, the gap is getting smaller fairly quickly. Just 5’20 remaining now.
73km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_079_zpsfb7100ba.jpg
Interesting developments in the peloton, with Totti(IAM), C.Sorensen(TST) and Caruso(CAN) attacking! Especially Totti is someone to keep an eye on. They only have a gap of 3’40 to bridge to the front now.
68km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0710_zpsb03c0792.jpg
The first riders reached the summit. Chaves is doing good stuff today, winning this KoM as well, meaning he has 24 points as well!
Hoogerland gets second. Totti and Caruso are at just 2 minutes now, and Sorensen couldn’t follow, and is 2’20 back, while the peloton is at 3’30. Katusha’s helpers look tired, so somebody should help them soon.
47km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0711_zpse8491f67.jpg
Chaves wins another KoM sprint, this one is just 4th category though. Still, he’s now KoM leader on his own. Purito is just 7 points behind though, and if he’s one of the 3 guys first over the climb, he spoils the Colombian party, and takes over the KoM. The attackers’ trio is at 1’50 and the peloton at 3’20.
38km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0712_zps9c569bdf.jpg
Radioshack started helping Katusha, and this is bad news for Totti & friends, since they are reeled back in now. The front group of 10 is still 2’40 in front.
30km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0713_zpsea704a27.jpg
Caruso(CAN) and C.Sorensen(TST) accelerate again, now at the start of the climb. The early escapees still have 2’30 on them.
28km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0714_zpsc876ed72.jpg
While Caruso seems struggling, Kiserlovski(RLT) goes all-or-nothing as well!
26km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0715_zpsfa02e136.jpg
Katusha and BMC(!) are not accepting the attacks, and they closed it. The breakaway remains 1’50 in front now.
25km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0716_zpsf4c0e16f.jpg
Nibali(AST) attack!!! Quintana(MOV) follows, and Totti(IAM) attempts so as well. Nerz(BMC) chases.
24km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0717_zpsf6ce1278.jpg
Purito decides not to wait, and there he goes! Nibali & Quintana are 25 seconds up the road.
22km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0718_zps2c5458f7.jpg
Those 3 guys merged into 1 favourites group. They are 30 secs in front of the small peloton and 1 minute behind the breakaway. Hoogerland couldn’t follow the pace of the breakaway, and is hanging in between. Porte is doing most of the peloton chasing.
20km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0719_zpsda014b5d.jpg
The favourite group managed to reach the early breakaway. Chaves, Brambilla and Cunego don’t want to surrender, though. They attack! The peloton looks close, but is 40 secs away.
19km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0720_zpsb12f8ed9.jpg
Attacks everywhere. Kreuziger goes, and Porte, Betancur and Hesjedal counter. Don’t be fooled, the Astana rider up there is Agnoli, Nibali is at the very much front, along with Quintana.
17km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0721_zps59976fba.jpg
Nibali goes, and Quintana counters. Landa tries to follow, while Purito doesn’t seem to have a great day.
For now, it looks as if the whole AG2R, Belkin and BMC team missed the cut, while Lampre and Euskaltel haven’t got their GC man up there either. Betancur fell back to the peloton in the end.
16km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0723_zpsb2d2162a.jpg
Rodriguez and Kreuziger try to get back to the front.
14km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0724_zps4c7abddd.jpg
Purito is not coming a lot closer. Nibali and Quintana are now 4km from the summit, and have half a minute on Purito. Kreuziger is at 50 seconds, and Dombrowski, Porte and Hesjedal are at 1’00.
13km -
The leader’s trio now has 40 seconds. Kreuziger follows at 1 minute. Things look good for him, since behind him, the pace dropped, and Porte and Hesjedal are back in the peloton. i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0725_zps8c38959f.jpg
Betancur attacks from behind now, though. He’s at 1’30 now.
11km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0726_zpsa2ade619.jpg
Nibali attacks, but Quintana has no trouble with countering. Purito has some problems though, Kreuziger nearly reached him. Also, Betancur received a lot of space.
10km -
While the leaders reached the summit, lets look at the current situation:
Leaders – Nibali and Quintana
0’50 – Rodriguez
1’00 – Kreuziger
1’35 - Betancur
2’05 – Porte, Hesjedal, D.Moreno, Dombrowski, Scarponi, Cunego, Evans(!), Bardet.
2’40 – Monfort, Ghita, Kelderman, De las Campos, Totti, Niemiec, Landa.

Rodriguez gets 3rd on the summit, meaning Chaves won’t take the KoM jersey after all, especially since Nibali is on 30 points as well.

8km - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0727_zpsc80f27eb.jpg
Let’s go downhill! Nibali certainly doesn’t mind. The gap is already 1 minute, and it most likely won’t get any smaller in the downhill. Meanwhile, in the back, a group of 3 accelerated from the peloton. Those are Porte, Hesjedal and Moreno.
5500m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0728_zpsc4e9aeff.jpg
Kreuziger actually reached Purito now. They’re 1’10 behind, and 50 secs ahead of Betancur.
4500m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0729_zps21b98b21.jpg
Nibali tries to get rid of Quintana in the downhill! He lacks the acceleration though. Both guys should be fairly similar in the sprint, so Nibali doesn’t want to take the rish.
3500m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0730_zpsb2dbe3ca.jpg
Nibali got the gap! He has a big chance of winning now! C’mon, he can’t give this away, right?
Rodriguez’ yellow jersey won’t get in trouble today, that seems certain.
2200m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0731_zps765a2936.jpg
Nibbles still has that gap, but the last km will be flat. This could be close!
In the back, the group of Scarponi and Evans doesn’t get closer to the group of Porte, Hesjedal and Moreno. That group however can’t get closer to Betancur.
1400m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0732_zpsaa723b55.jpg
Nibali seems to be able to take this, being a turn ahead of Quintana.
700m - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0733_zpsc452e9d0.jpg
Yes, he’s going to do this! Quintana didn’t enter the last km yet. This could be a huge win mentally as well, after Nibali crashing in the descent in one of the early Suisse stages.
Finish - i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0734_zpsd6724dc6.jpg
He does it, easily! Great win for him!
Quintana comfortably gets 2nd, at 30 seconds. i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0735_zps8a1fbc80.jpg
At 1’24, Purito edges out Kreuziger for 3rd. Great race for Kreuziger, not so much by Purito. i1326.photobucket.com/albums/u660/jesleyh/EPIC%20Reports/Suisse_0736_zps7fac42fe.jpg
At 2’04, it’s Betancur finishing 5th.
At 2’46, it’s Hesjedal winning the sprint for 6th. Ryder will lose his GC podium today.
At 3’12, Evans sprints to 9th, while Bardet closes the Top 10.
Spoiler
Sorry for the lack of pics here, PCM didn’t cooperate

Purito keeps the GC lead. Nibali takes over second, and Quintana finishes off the podium. Hesjedal is the biggest loser, dropping 2 spots, to end up 4th. That still isn’t bad though. Evans does a good job today, and enters the Top 10, at a 9th position.
Purito takes over the KoM(though Nibali has 30 points as well), and also remains the points leader.
