It'll come sooner or later, I hope. Not in this race, but in another one perhaps. Pfft

You know guys, I'm just keeping this story interesting by not winning everything Wink

That's the clear reason Dienblad Wink But what a great start to the season, so Tour de Med is brilliant, even without that win Wink

Stage 4
img69.imageshack.us/img69/7049/14stage4x.jpg

The 4th stage from La Londe Les Maures to Biot is again a short, but difficult one. There are a lot of ascending kilometres of the total of 146, and also the last 2 kilometres in the town of Biot are uphill.

10 riders form the BOTD and in the end, only 3 are remaining. Guillaume Bonnafond (AG2R), José Herrada (Caja Rural) and Danail Petrov (Saur) enter the last kilometre with a margin of 30 seconds, and normally this should be enough.
Bonnafond and Herrada get passed by the raging and sprinting puncheurs, but Petrov stays out freach and takes a surprising win at the age of 35. Maxime Monfort beats Heinrich Haussler in the sprint for the 2nd place, with Thomas De Gendt getting a good 5th place, being lead out by Marcel Kittel. No GC-changes.

Another top 10, and another top 5. Good stage, but we want the win now.

Stage 5
img85.imageshack.us/img85/9299/17stage5.jpg

The final stage of the Tour Méditerranéen finishes traditionally upon the Mont Faron, outside Toulon. With a length of 5.3 kilometres at an average gradient of 8.5%, this will shake up the GC for sure.

The breakaway gets caught early in the ascend of Mont Faron. Thomas De Gendt is being helped perfectly by Romain Zingle and is pulling apart the peloton. When Zingle is empty, De Gendt continues all by himself with 3km to go. Only Saur's Jonathan Hivert is in his wheel, and Hivert attacks with 2km to go. Maxime Monfort (Lotto) is closing the gap from behind quickly.
img265.imageshack.us/img265/9909/182km.jpg

Monfort closes the gap, jumps over the 2 and only Hivert can follow. The win in the stage and the GC goes to the Belgian rider, whos departure of Radio Shack is already succesful. De Gendt couldn't sprint uphill (7-9%) for the 2 full kilometres (cya logic...) and finishes in 3rd at '28.

As a preparation for the cobbled races, starting with the Omllop - KBK double, the cobbles-squad shows up in the Middle-East in the Tour of Oman, together with Wilco Kelderman, who'll have a shot at the GC.
The race starts with 3 flat stages, before the GC will be made up in stage 4 with the mountain-top-finish at the Jabal al Akhdhar (5.8km at 10.3%). Stage 5 is a very hilly ITT, before the riders finish the Tour of Oman with a flat stage.
img100.imageshack.us/img100/148/2parcours.jpg

Last year, the Tour of Oman was surprisingy won by Andalucia's Antonio Colom.

Stage 1

The Tour of Oman kicks off with the first of 3 flat stages. After the start in Al Sawadi, the riders will face 158 kilometres through the desert before the finish in Al Seeb.
img171.imageshack.us/img171/4985/6stage1.jpg

26km to go
Th eteam gets some great air time on tv today. Reason for this is Sébastien Rosseler who is in the attack with the Farnese Vini-cuple Claudio Corioni and Takashi Miyazawa. With 40km to go, Rosseler attacks and continues solo, leaving the Italian and Japanes champion behind. Behind them, Fabian Cancellara had attacked out of the peloton and was about to close the gap.
With 26 kilometres to go, the adventure is over for Rosseler, while Cancellara decides to try once more. Of course, he won't make it.
img821.imageshack.us/img821/3131/726km.jpg

2km to go
The sprinter teams start their lead outs and 2 teams dominate. Katusha (surprisingly not for Galimzyanov but for Pozzato) and M&M's (for Degenkolb) form 2 trains, on both sides of the road. Matti Breschel lost the wheel of Degenkolb, and has to work too hard (with a daily form of -5 Sad ) to keep enough energy.
img40.imageshack.us/img40/13/82km.jpg

Finish
Degenkolb is a way better sprinter than Pozzato (80 vs 75) and wins the stage. It's his first win for the M&M's-team, since he couldn't win a single race in 2012! Pozzato finishes in 2nd, with Nicholas Walker (United Health Care) in 3rd. Matti Breschel has to settle with a very disappointing 14th place.

Stage 2

Also the 2nd stage from The Wave, Muscat to Al Wutayya is flat and should end in a sprinting duel.
img843.imageshack.us/img843/3679/11stage2.jpg

76km to go
The story of this stage is a 12-man breakaway, including riders as Jeremy Hunt (Kingspan), Michael Barry (Sky) and Nick Nuyens (Saxo Bank), that creates a maximum margin of 6 minutes. But of course, they stand no chance against the peloton.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/3474/1276km.jpg

4km to go
Even tough Matti Breschel again suffers a bad daily form (-3), we try to set up our sprint train. Although we set up a pace of about 60 km/h, Fabian Cancellara still tries to attack, For sure some guts he's showing!
img688.imageshack.us/img688/8934/134km.jpg

Finish
But when our sprint train enters the last 2 kilometres, it already has been passed by many other riders. Still funny to see that riders with Fl of 65, can create a much higher speed than those with Fl 77.....
Anyway, for the 2nd day in a row it's German John Degenkolb who takes the stage win (he's turning into acobbled-sprinting beast!), followed by Sacha Modolo (Team Type 1) and Francisco Ventoso (Movistar). And what about us? 9th place for Breschel.

Stage 3

The third flat stage, but the last before the green mountain and ITT. The route with start and finish in Sur is 144km long, and will probably end in another mass sprint.
img705.imageshack.us/img705/1007/16stage3.jpg

76km to go
11 riders are volunteers to set up an attack and BOTD in the Oman desert. Among them are Nick Nuyens and Juan Antonio Flecha, who must be testing their legs for the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne. Their maximum gap is 5'15, but they will get caught.
img18.imageshack.us/img18/7779/1776km.jpg

3km to go
Matti Breschel succeeds in finding the back wheel of double stage winner John Degenkolb. But this time, the M&M's train is stalling, and with 3km to go, they are far behind Movistar (with Ventoso) and Katusha (with Pozzato).
img805.imageshack.us/img805/3295/183km.jpg

Finish
Tom Leezer manages to pull back Degenkolb to the front, but this is too much for Breschel, who can't stay in the wheel of the GC-leader. Degenkolb even comes close to get the win again, but can't overtake Francisco José Ventoso, who finishes off perfect work from his Movistar-team. 2nd place goes surprisingly to French Florian Vachon (AG2R), the 3rd to Degenkolb and the 12th to Breschel.

Stage 4

The 4th stage between Sultan Qaboos University and Jabal al Akhdhar will bring the first decision in the GC. The last 6 are ascending upon the slopes of the green mountain, with an average gradient of 10.3%.
img233.imageshack.us/img233/9640/21stage4.jpg

18km to go
As usual in PCM 11, the GC-leader attacks before the final climb starts. After the early breakaway gets caught, John Degenkolb tries to surprise the climbers with an attack, 12 kilometres before the foot of the climb.
img513.imageshack.us/img513/8407/2218km.jpg

But with the very steep Jabal al Akhdhar waiting, Degenkolb doesn't stand a chance....
img36.imageshack.us/img36/3089/23klim.jpg

5km to go
The ascend of the Jabal al Akhdhar has started, and Wilco Kelderman believes that the way to win here, is to set an extremely high pace, to prevent riders to attack. He's followed by 4 AG2R-riders, who'll ride for John Gadret.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/1365/245km.jpg

2km to go
As a result, only 3 riders remain up front. Entering the last kilometres, Kelderman is joined by Daniel Navarro (Saxo) and John Gadret (AG2R). Navarro attacks, and Kelderman continues in his own pace, knowing that the last 2 kilometres have an average gradient of 13.5%.
img803.imageshack.us/img803/7707/252km.jpg

1km to go
And this was the right decision as Navarro seems to have blown his engine and is starting to stall. Kelderman has passed him and his riding towards his first win as a professional cyclist (not counting the wins in the Rabo CT-team).
img269.imageshack.us/img269/81/261km.jpg

Finish
And he takes it, the first win for Wilco Kelderman, and he gives himself a great shot at the GC-win, with a ITT coming up. Navarro and Gadret finish '20 behind, Jarlinson Pantano at '30 and Callegarin, Löfkvist, Costa and Pasamontes at '48.

Word from the DS
Now this was a perfect ride by Wilco Kelderman. A good fitness (85) and daily form (+3) helped him getting his first win for the team. As the best timetrialist in the top 5, he'll have a great chance to win this Tour of Oman.

Good tactics in the finale there. Nice victory. Smile

Quite sure Kelderman will take the TT too, along with the overall!
