Only changed the shifters and front derailleur from SLX to XT. It'll be ready in 1 week!!
That looks nice indeed, good to see more bikers here, i dont know what are these road freaks talking about here.

About to do my first wheel build, using Mavic Open Pro rims with Dura Ace 7850 SL Hubs and Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes. I am really looking forward to building my 1st set of real road wheels, I have built a few out of spare parts I have but nothing of this quality

Nice effort. Was glad to get back out at the weekend myself for 40km after a puncture cut a ride short last week then my carefully planned day-off-work ride got hijacked too.
Talking about punctures will have to keep an eye on the tyres from now on as I've previously been puncture free for 18 months on the current Specialized Armadillo tyres. I suspect they may need replacing soon after doing about 2500km - I know tyre wear is dependent on so many factors but any experience of when people usually need to replace tyres? |

It really does come down to so many factors, I run either Continental GP 4000s and have gotten 5000 out of a pair, that is basically using them everyday and through winter months. I also rotate the tyres regularly and check tyre pressure pretty much everyday. Also had good luck with Kenda Kaliente Pro's. Armadillos are a good all round tyre also look at Conti GP 4 seasons if you are looking for something that will last you a while....
Managed 3 100 k plus rides last week and 522 k's in total which was a bit of fun, sitting on 1524 (I think) for the month so might nudge a 2000 k month which I'd be happy with

@Strydz
When you say rotate the tyres, do you mean swapping front and rear around?

Usually when the rubber seems to have become too thin and that little cracks appear on the sides of the part on which you're rolling (I'm sure there's a proper word for that).
I'm using Michelin Pro Race 4 (23 mm) nowadays. At first they were very great, quite a lot of improvement in terms of lateral grip.
After 2000 km or something, I noticed that the rear tyre was starting to be worn, it's totally cracking on one side. I'm still using it, but I'm afraid the whole rubber will go at once and I'll find myself in an uncomfortable position then (crash if that happens on a descent).
The front tyre is fine though, so it might be nothing but bad luck.
Another thing to check is the number of cuts caused by debris, or anything you might have ridden on. When it's looking too bad it's time to change. Of course "bad" is fully subjective.
I'll probably get GP 4000 4 seasons for this winter.

I hate my phone. Rode 50ks this morning, only recorded 13.
Thinking about getting a Garmin. Should l pay extra to get better features or just by the stock standard one? |

I have a 510, which I can't use (read on the previous page), but it should be good enough once it's fixed. I took the CAD(ence) and HRM (heart rate monitor) options, plus it can communicate with a smartphone for weather updates, with a power meter (when I'll get one), etc.
The lower models don't have all that stuff, whereas the high end models have extra stuff that I don't think I need (loading gpx files if you've decided your route before - well that'd prevent me from losing myself, if you've checked my long strava rides it seems to happen regularly ).

Probably don't need heart rate or cadence monitor. Just want something that logs my rides and can be uploaded to Strava. |

Yes that is what I mean, the rear will always wear quicker so if you swap them say every 1000 k or so then you will get even wear on both tyres and a longer life span...
@ wogsrus If you are just looking at a GPS to record your rides and load to Strava then look at a Garmin 200, they are quite cheap but don't have all the extra info that the other versions have. I used one for a while beofre I picked up a cheap 500 of Ebay. The 200 is a great little unit so I would say check it out.

Is the problem with the phone GPS signal cutting out or the app you are running to record the ride? Lots of tree cover where you are rinding? I only ask as I half expected to encounter some GPS issues using Endomondo but as it turns out the signal has never dropped so far.
With regard to a Garmin I was seriously considering a Garmin 500 which can be picked up for under £140 off Amazon or some such now. I plan ahead or know where I'm riding so no need for the mapping that the 800 provides and, like you, don't require cadence or heart rate monitoring. You can also get open source maps for free as I understand it - i.e. there is no need to shell out for the relevant map from Garmin just buy the unit then install a freebie map.
With regard to the 510 or 810 models isn't the only difference from the 00's, apart from the price, live updates to your friends and live weather info? Nice if you're into that but again not something I'd make use of.

I put that down under bad advice to be honest. Whilst you might equal out some of the wear, the front tyre is far more important when riding. It provides the majority of your cornering grip and, depending on your style, braking grip as well.
Putting a known worn tyre on it is a bad idea, as you take away grip and heightening your chances of a crash.
Every really serious cyclist i know (semi-pros, coaches, touring legends etc.) categorically states not to swap the tyres around. They all say just to change up the rear tyre for a new one when it starts to get too worn. One tyre is a whole lot cheaper than a new bike or a new bone...

Desperately lacking motivation currently, somebody want a strava race to a 1000km? or height gain race or something?!
I lost my summer of racing to 1 bad crash in may and have had nothing to make me want to ride since!

I read they're the new versions replacing the X00, and mostly have improved temperature sensors or improved sensors in general.
(If the tactile screen wasn't improved but just functional, that'd have been great too *mumble*.)
If you intend to cycle half-seriously or more, I'd say cadence and HRM are a must have. It really helps regulating your power properly (without using a power meter), as the biggest percentage of your power you use, the faster you should pedal to get an optimal output.

We, PCM.daily, have a Strava group. Feel free to join us. There are on going distance challenges there. Height gain challenges should come back some time too.
Strydz beats us all though.

Hmmm, way to tempt fate. I got hopelessly lost this evening before smartphone gps and mapping got me back on track, oh and the sun setting convienently in the west at the time provided some less high tech help too - I live to the east of here why the hell am I riding into the sun?!
Note to self when riding a new route remember to check the key junctions on Google Maps first, they don't always look quite how you would imagine them to from a casual glance at a map...

Hey PCMDaily strava kids, we need a logo for our club as it looks a little sad at the moment. Oh and Aquarius I don't always win these things, last week I didn't have the longest ride or most elevation just the most k's
