World Championships 2014 - Ponferrada, Spain
Due to roadworks, there was a slight problem. The Individual Time Trial was moved back to four days after the Road Race.
World Championships - Road Race
Stijn: Because Gilbert and Bakelants are both injured, I made the selection. I hope to do some work for the team and prove myself worthy of participation!
Willy: I consider this as my final deep training before the Time Trial, since it's been moved. I haven't raced a World Championship yet, but I hope I can be a factor deep into the finale. I will do everything possible to get the team leader the Rainbow Jersey.
Stijn Van Gent
The World Championship is a nervous race. The pace is high and there are constantly happening things around you. Unfortunately, I took a fall.
I was so angry at myself! I got up and chased the peloton. After that, I wasn't much use to the team anymore, I played no role today.
Willy Wouters
Me and Hermans were the two biggest protectors of Vanendert. We kept by his side all day long.
In the final lap, Rodriguez fell and almost caused a disaster. Luckily, nobody else went down with him.
I was the only one left with Vanendert in the leading group of 25. I blew my legs leading him out.
But young Moreno Moser was the fastest and took his second consecutive World Title. What an amazing talent!
World Championships - Individual Time Trial
Willy: This is a profile that suits me perfectly. I will take it relatively easy on the flat section and try to drop a bomb on the final climb. I believe much can be won/lost there. In the end, it's an advantage for me that the Time Trial was moved, I feel much stronger than at the Road Race! I have super legs today!
Willy Wouters
I didn't have as much nerves as with the Road Race. I started quite relaxed, even!
Cancellara started right after me, which caused a little nervousness. Upon hitting the final climb, he almost had my wheel.
But the climb gave me wings. I had saved a lot of energy and I lost him quickly! Cancellara's weight was obviously a big factor!
First provisional time? Oh man, this is amazing. Only two man could really threaten me now, Tony Martin and Fabian Cancellara. Here came the latter, would he beat my time?

Un-frikking-believable! The jury's verdict:
- Willy Wouters: 1h05'24.015"
- Fabian Cancellara: 1h05'24.867"
This is beyond anything I would ever expect here. This is a dream coming true. It really hasn't sunk in yet, but it's true: Willy Wouters, Champion of the World (Time Trial).
This opens up a whole new world. Many talk shows have contacted me for this winter, but I think I'll pass on most of them. My training is more important. I want to show that jersey as much as possible next year!
This is too much. I have no words for it. Just totally blown away right now!
Both me and Stijn will appear in two more races this year: Paris - Tours and Chrono des Nations.
Until then,
World Champion Willy Wouters (last time I'll say it, promise!)

And same WC-routes as I have coming up in 2014 on PCM11. I'd expect different winners though

Ollfardh -Oh yeah!
TimoCycling - It really was close. During the race it showed that Cancellara won, but in the results and on the podium they got switched
Marcovdw - Thanks
Jesleyh - It really is unbelievable! Nieve was surprisingly strong and Rodriguez got in shape too late (had to come from 10 minutes down in the final week). Prepare to be very happy, I will end the season this evening. So from tomorrow it's: Wilco Kelderman, Willy Wouters and Stijn Van Gent @ Garmin
Daggen - Oh, it's like that!
Atlantius - If Wouters would win in your savegame, it'd be strange Moser really surprised me, but nobody tried to make the gap in the hills.
Bikex - It must be Now it isn't only Stijn taking his wins, it's also Willy
TheManxMissile - Oh yeah! Honestly I couldn't have won without 85! Form, I mean.
Decided to skip Paris - Tours and Chrono Des Nations. I edited most of the transfers, game crashed, took a weekly save, edited it again, things worked out, changed teams to Garmin, simulated to 2015 and we are a-rolling!
This evening I will do one final report from 2014, though. Some more news, rankings, promoting teams and the new team: Team Garmin (Barracuda apparently dropped out), a mixture of young American riders, young Dutch riders, some Belgians and 1 South - African. More about this later today! |

I did just notice that Mollema got 3rd at the WC RR. That's good

Jesleyh - Mollema sure had a great sprint left We've joined Garmin now, and there are about 9 Dutch riders there. Besides Kelderman there are many young Dutchmen, some talents.
TTspecialist - Thanks a lot! Talking about a TT specialist
sutty68 - It's too good to be true!
krisa - Two very young World Champions this year. 24 and 23 years old, I think!
PCM rulezz - I'll make sure to give him a schedule that's full of prologues and time trials The new jersey of Garmin will also be strange at first, leaving Argos behind.
Thanks everyone for the positive response! I never thought Willy would be World Champion, but with only 63 race days, his form was really out there, compared to 88 race days - Cancellara
I'm ready for 2015, I also added some variants for the Belgian National Road Race, to give Willy a chance sometimes. I think there are 4 routes now: 2 sprints, 1 K - B - K and the profile of WC 2012, Valkenburg. |

We're leaving 2014 as we head into the next year. There is some more news, which we will bring to you shortly.
Team Argos - Shimano
Team Argos is saved, so it seems. TV3, a new Belgian television broadcaster, has taken up the reins. The team will be split into half the current squad (excluding us) and more than 10 Belgian neopros.
Racing and Team Garmin - Barracuda
In the end, we passed for the final races of the year. Finishing on the World Championships was beautiful. Season 2014 is over for us! We are now preparing the move to Team Garmin - Barracuda, which means we're moving back to Belgium. Willy will leave on a mountain training camp pretty soon, though. We will present the new Team Garmin team after the moving, because things are pretty hectic now!
Promotion and Relegation
We'll keep this short!
Surprisingly, Team Type 1 promoted to World Tour. In order to carry the burden, they brought in new riders (non-diabetes) and got a new main sponsor, they will be known as Team Navigateur.
Colnago was the second team to promote. They had a great season and we hope they'll do well in the World Tour.
The teams going (back) to the Pro Continental League are Team Europcar and Orica - GreenEdge.
Vélo d'Or & other awards
We both were pleasantly surprised to see Stijn among one of the ten nominated riders for the most prestige cycling award of the year! However, the winner became Tour winner Alberto Contador, with runner-up Moreno Moser.
"Sportman van het Jaar", a Belgian award for all sportsmen, was won by Willy Wouters! By becoming World Champion in Time Trialing, he became the first Belgian ever to do so! Finishing on the podium of the Tour at age 23 also contributed to the award.

Well, it's unbelievable, but we're both turning into more than decent professional cyclists. We both finished top 10 in the UCI Ranking and the CQ Ranking, that's amazing! Our hard work is paying off.
That's about it for 2014. I guess we'll see you in 2015?
