Nice to see Ferrari grab a top ten for Lampre Smile

Silvio Herklotz
Hoping for nothing here, but maybe we can show up in some breakaways or so..

Nice to see Kakhi taking 10th and therefore accomplishing our goal in Philly. So in the end it is 2/6 for us, which is quite ok taking into account that we didn't set those goals and De Vries still has lots of race days

Finally Colombia are beginning to look better, a great 14th for Duarte seems to be the best result so far. FrownCoolSmile

REPORT - CRITÉRIUM DU DAUPHINÉ
STAGE 6: LA LÉCHÈRE - GRENOBLE
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/de/thumb/3/30/Crit%C3%A9rium_du_Dauphin%C3%A9.svg/500px-Crit%C3%A9rium_du_Dauphin%C3%A9.svg.png
Welcome back! It is stage 6 of Critérium du Dauphiné.
After a one-day transfer from Valmorel to La Léchère, we continue the racing today. The stage is rated as hilly, but this is due to the lack of hards climb in the second part. However, on the 139km to Grenoble we have several mountains to pass that will hurt all legs. Those are: Côte d’Arvillard after 60km with a minor elevation of 490m and a Cat. 4 KoM. Then we head onto Col du Barioz, which is much harder as it goes up to 1038m and therefore has a Cat. 1 KoM. After those 80km we have reached the highest point of the stage, because afterwards there is a rather long downhill that prepares the riders for Col de Ayes, another Cat. 2 climb. On almost 1000m we have reached a plateau then. But it is not flat at all. The next 30km go up and down all the time with Col des Mouiles on the way and several other minor climbs. The reason why the stage should not decide the GC and is likely to end in a sprint of a small pack, is that the last 25km do not feature any uphill sections but just a long downhill and a flat finish then. We will see which sprinters are able to survive the climbs or if there is even going to be a (late?) breakaway winner. Surely the GC-contenders will save some energy for the next two days, which will have summit finishs.

For me it gets boring, but I am sure the riders like it that way: We have blue sky and round about 20 degrees again. After 5km, the first attacks happen. Ballan (BMC) is trying his luck, followed by Aru (AST). So we have at least one strong climber in the breakaway. Will the other teams allow them to open a gap?

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2719_54_39-ProCyclingManager2013_zps1eacee36.jpg

125km to go, E1 – 2:20 – Peloton
Several attacks are coming in and behind nobody is chasing. So all the escapees now built up a strong head group. It is Izagirre (EUS), Feillu (SOJ), Flecha (VCD), Rabottini (VIN), Danielson (GRS) and Gadret (ALM). All in all we have decent climbers in there and the strength of eight men will give them a good chance to make it through the stage as it is a shorter one.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2719_55_39-ProCyclingManager2013_zps8740a73a.jpg

120km to go, E1 – 2:45 – Peloton
As usual, the riders in front are only concentrating on the stage finish and therefore do not really care for the Intermediate Sprint where Izagirre passes in front of Ballan and Aru. Behind several teams are ensuring the gap not to get too big. Mainly Katusha, OmegaPharma and Movistar are riding and the advantage stays under 3 minutes.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_07_15-_zps13df9387.jpg

80km to go, Rabottini – 0:16 – E2 – 4:48 – Peloton
Right in front of the KoM, Rabottini attacked to ensure getting the points. Nobody followed him, but surely he will drop back to the group soon. In the pack, everything cooled down a bit. The teams are still chasing but decreased their effort so the gap is growing slowly.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_11_42-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsafd8d353.jpg

70km to go, E1 – 5:32 – Peloton
Lead by Flecha, the breakaway enters Col du Barioz. Behind Rabottini, Gadret and Izagirre took the other points on the KoM. In the pack only Movistar is chasing now and as Rabottini is the best placed rider 6:22 in arrears, Movistar has no interest in bringing the break back soon.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_14_01-ProCyclingManager2013_zps9bb44ac1.jpg

63km to go, E1 – 5:17 – Peloton
Rabottini takes the Cat. 1 KoM – he surely wants to go for the mountain jersey today. The pack is still altogether, but many riders are suffering on the climb, so some will definitely lose contact.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_19_28-ProCyclingManager2013_zps978a2988.jpg

52km to go, E1 – 5:08 – Peloton
There is not much happening in general. It is just climbing all the time and the breakaway has now done the biggest work for today as they are on top of the steepest climb, Col de Ayes. On the top, Gadret pips out Rabottini who really wanted to take the points but was just too exhausted. However, to his former 26 points he added 3 on the Cat. 4 climb, 15 on the Cat. 1 and now 8 more. So he is at 52 overall, which gives him the KoM lead for sure. But there are still two mountain stages to come, which can change things all around.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_22_58-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsff8e6a79.jpg

45km to go, E1 – 4:54 – Peloton
As Rabottini also took the last KoM and the break is now on the plateau, the pack is thinning out. Just about 100 riders are still together with many losing contact due to the continuous climbs. Astana is helping Movistar with the chasing a bit. However, both Greipel (LTB) and Kittel (ARG) both survived the climbs. So will we finally see the big duel between those?

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_32_16-ProCyclingManager2013_zps8dff8c79.jpg

25km to go, E1 – 2:10 – Peloton
Movistar is really pacing in the pack. I am not sure if this is the right decision, because they should rather save energy for the last two stages in my opinion, but probably the Movistar manager will explain those tactics to me afterwards. Under the high tempo, the breakaway is sufficiently losing its advantage as they now have passed the last uphill section for today. From now on it is just downhill and flat until the finish. We see Greipel on the photograph with Kittel being near him on the right side. Why are their teams not working if they are still in the main group? It looks like staying up there has cost them too much energy, so they cannot compete in the sprint anymore. But we will see if they are able to recover properly.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_35_31-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsc6a4a9e9.jpg

20km to go, E1 – 1:10 – Peloton
The pack is on the descend now and we have major attacks incoming. We saw Mollema (BEL) and Navarro (COF) trying something. Now it is Roche (TST), Trofimov (KAT), Moser (CAN) and Schröder (EUC) going, but all those attacks are quickly closed down by the Movistar guys with the help of those teams that missed out on the latest attack. That big action behind does not help the breakaway. Their lead is down to just over a minute now.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_43_01-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsad43e0f4.jpg

10km to go, E1 – 1:12 – Peloton
When the series of attacks was over, everything cooled down a bit under the control of Movistar, so that the breakaway is still in front with a significant gap now. However, more and more riders lost contact at the end of the pack and you can surely guess who was among them: Though their teammates are trying to bring them back, Greipel and Kittel sit in the same group behind the pack now. Therefore it is decided now that their managers wasted 8 race days for them, because they had not a single chance to compete throughout the race. However, we see new attacks and it is guys we already know: Moser, Schröder and Roche are going.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_46_00-ProCyclingManager2013_zps79dd3630.jpg

5000m to go, E1 – 1:04 – E2 – 0:28 – Peloton
The whole time, the break worked well together but with a lead of over one minute, the friendship is over under the 5km banner as Danielson attacks his companions. Behind those eight, Roche, Moser and Schröder have opened up a gap on the pack, but they are not really gaining on the still strong breakaway. It looks promising for the guys in front for sure.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_49_33-ProCyclingManager2013_zps5578f526.jpg

3000m to go, E1 – 1:16 – E2 – 0:21 – Amador – 0:16 – Peloton
Right in the moment, when Izagirre brought back Danielson by attacking himself, we have major action among the favourites. Froome (SKY), Martin (GRS), Kwiatkowski (OPQ) and Mollema (BEL) attacked from the pack and joined the three late escapees. Behind them, yellow jersey Amador (MOV) is giving it everything to catch up. Will this downhill finally create GC-gaps?

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_52_26-ProCyclingManager2013_zps2a27226c.jpg

2000m to go, E1 – 1:14 – E2 – 0:30 – Peloton
Ok, back to the front. Amador has closed the gap, but everything is possible as the pace is amazing and Froome really tries to get away with the peloton also pacing hard. More importantly, the sprint in the front group started. Ballan and Flecha are positioned best, Rabottini and Aru are trying to get on their wheels. Izagirre and Gadret are in their wheels respectively, so they have a good position though they are some meters behind. Danielson and Feillu are all over the place.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2720_57_22-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsff4aa906.jpg

1000m to go, E1 – 0:54 – E2 – 0:35 – Peloton
Under the flame rouge, Ballan is still in front but Rabottini somehow looks to be the strongest and has a big acceleration now. That would be a big victory for Vini Fantini, especially because Rabottini was going for the KoM points all the day and surely lost some energy because of that. While Flecha is slowing down, Izagirre somehow found something left and is now also sprinting fast. Froome is kind of riding away from the other guys, but when the sprint in the peloton starts, everything could come back together there without any gaps.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2721_03_35-ProCyclingManager2013_zpsa19c612d.jpg

Finish line
Rabottini wins! What a victory for him and Vini Fantini! Congratulations. He overtook Ballan, who can hold on for second. Then it is Izagirre in third. Aru, Flecha, Gadret, Feillu and Danielson are the next to come. The gap onto the next guys is significant, but will not have any effect on the GC.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2721_07_22-ProCyclingManager2013_zps9d4e1625.jpg

Finish line
Froome holds on for ninth and has a small gap onto Moser who leads the late breakaway into the finish and gets the last place in Top10. The other guys are Martin, Kwiatkowski, Mollema, Amador, Schröder and Roche. However, there should not be a gap to the peloton as Pinot gets in just some meters behind them. That effort did not pay out in the end.

i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj118/lucasarudolph/dauphine%206/2014-05-2721_09_09-ProCyclingManager2013_zps33d9ccd1.jpg

The advantage for the eight breakaway riders was 0:59 in the end. From Froome on, there were no gaps given. The GC stays the same, while Rabottini is also new KoM leader. Froome increased his lead in the points classification and should win it in the end by the looks of things. Kwiatkowski is still the best young rider with Cofidis being the best team.

PROLOGUE

Profile:

www.cyclingcoverage.com/images/stageprofiles/tdl2011pprofile.jpg

Favourites:

Lars Boom (BEL), Damien Gaudin (EUC), Marouane Shaqif (MTN)

Race:

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0001_zpsfd2a9231.jpg
The first rider to start today is Dermot Walker (TNE). His time is 7 minutes and 12 seconds, probably not good enough for the victory.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0002_zpsa7ef4e76.jpg
Soon after him, the first 'favourite' gets underway. Gregory Rast (RLT) sets, unsuprisingly, the fastest time so far: 7 minutes and 2 seconds.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0003_zps0c048a70.jpg
Sebastien Turgot (EUC) can't be underestimated according to the organizers. However, the pressure may have gotten too much for him, he is 7 seconds slower as the leader.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0004_zpsd6e51826.jpg
The first big gun to hit the road is Marouane Shaqif from MTN. He shows what he is capable of: a whopping 6 minutes and 53 seconds! New fastest time, can it be beaten?

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0005_zpsb65200ad.jpg
Bob Jungels (RLT) rides in his home country. He sets the provisional second fastest time, just 4 seconds slower as Shaqif.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0006_zps78bf30bd.jpg
The Frenchman Geoffroy Lequatre (BSE) does his best, and sets a provisional third time, 8 seconds behind.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0007_zps6d97ae7d.jpg
Belkin-rider Paul Martens arrives here in a rather odd color scheme. The blue doesn't really fit with the green in my opinion. I doubt it distracted him, he sets a time of 7 minutes dead.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0008_zpsf7727337.jpg
Damien Gaudin (EUC) is ready to start, what can he do? He is rated as a big favourite today and....wow, he beats Shaqif's time by 2 seconds! New leader!

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0009_zpse9cb28d2.jpg
The TT-champion from Kazachstan, Dmitriy Gruzdev (AST) can't beat him. 10 seconds slower, outside provisional top-5.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0010_zps6416ee5f.jpg
His teammate Enrico Gasparotto does a better job, provisional 4th.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0011_zpsc27b9eb0.jpg
Next is Naveed Alinejad (RLT). He has just crossed the line in 6 minutes and 56 seconds, third place for now!

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0012_zps3af30651.jpg
The organizers were tipping Ilnur Zakarin (RVL) as an outsider for the stage, but the bookmakers gave him some very high odds. The bookies were right, he will finish well outside the top-10.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0013_zps4ac8b136.jpg
Crelan were initially hoping on this guy, Maxime Vantomme, to deliver a good result in the prologue. However, Sebastien Delfosse rode a better TT as his leader. They will finish 8th and 12th respectively.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0014_zps47d540e0.jpg
Jurgen Roelandts (LTB) disappoints today, not even a top-20 for him.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0015_zpsf4d227c6.jpg
Lars Boom (BEL) is a real favourite, but can he beat Gaudin? Nope, 3 seconds slower, third place for him.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0016_zps22ee1ade.jpg
Basque Country relies on Ion Izagirre (EUS) to show a good performance! He will end today's stage in ninth place, 9 seconds behind.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/EPIC/Tour%20of%20Luxembourg/Stage%201/PCM0017_zps7ebb4a8d.jpg
The last rider across the line is Jakob Fuglsang (AST). He is 11 seconds slower as today's winner, Damien Gaudin!
