It was a crazy race in France. The named race to the sun was forgotten due to the awful weather in most stage of the race. Hope was revived as the sunny days came back as soon as we reached Nice in the last stage. The amount of falls in the pack in key moments of the race, quickly made it a survival race.
The only Jumbo rider who managed to avoid all traps in the race was Dylan Groenewegen. The Dutch rider managed to take advantage of the chaos in the pack to find the legs to stay with the favorites group for most stages to get himself a top 10 finish in the general classification, as well as two stage wins along the way, including a very unlikely one in the last stage in Nice.
Jansan and Grosu working for Groenewegen in the first stage
Before the race, after checking out the route, one name was on everybody's lips: Michael Matthews. The Aussie champion was clearly the only rider able to fight for bonus seconds with the sprinters as well as the puncheurs.
And he did not only gain bonus seconds, but got stage wins in both flat and hilly stages. As soon as he got the yellow jersey, it was clear that only a miss fortune would see him lose the race, but his team protected him very well and no such thing happened in a very crazy race.
The yellow jersey had Bling's name written all over it
One of the many victims of the averse weather was last year's winner, Rui Costa. The Portuguese saw his GC hopes shattered in a mass crash in the fourth stage, but managed to bounce back to win the polka dots classification and a stage win after a successful breakaway in the seventh stage.

Indeed. And it might turn out into a battle for who will take on the green jersey at the Tour. This year it's still Groenewegen for the Tour and Van Poppel for Giro and Vuelta. But if things keep going like this, Van Poppel might deserve his shot at the green jersey next year.

Danny Van Poppel was back to defend his 2019 title and was successful in doing so after a great team work and a brilliant lead-out from Mike Teunissen. An early celebration almost spoiled the party though. It didn't spoil Van Poppel's win, but it sure did cost Teunissen a place on the podium.

Ineos brought a stellar team here with Kwiatkowski, Froome, Bernal, Sivakov and Vanmarcke and this was reflected in a dominant win the opening team time - trial, 16 seconds faster than Jumbo.
Black and yellow... and a few other colors
The race started quite well for Jumbo with a second place in the opening stage, but things would quickly fall apart as Roglic fell ill in the fourth stage which saw him out of contention for the podium. He recovered for the two stages and came very close to winning the final stage, only 2 seconds slower than the stage winner, Matthias Brändle. It was De Plus who stepped up to take over the leader's duties and he did quite well with a 7th place overall.
The fourth stage of was ridden very hard and the pack broke into pieces with a lot of gaps being created between the riders. Simon Yates came out on top, crossing the line 23 seconds in front of Alaphilippe. Only 5 riders finished within of 1 minute of him.
Simon's first win for his new team
The race broke apart again the very next stage. This time it was Lopez' time to impress. The Colombian won the stage with an advantage of 2 minutes over the duo of S. Yates and Dumoulin. The gap was nowhere close to threaten the Brit's lead though as Lopez had lost over 3 minutes in the previous stage.
Lopez enjoying the first real mountain stage of the season
The remaining hilly stage and the final time - trial didn't pose any threat to Simon Yates and the Bahrain rider had no problem defending the leader's jersey to claim the overall win.

Some rather pale moves made by the attackers today. Only one rider was able to get a gap on Poggio. It was Michelton's Greg Van Avermaet, but his move didn't last long as Bora lead the chase for Sagan after him.
Van Avermaet on the move
With no one in front at the top of the Poggio, it was clear everything will be decided after a sprint. Two domestiques were first at the top of the climb: Tratnik and Van Baarle, with Van Poppel in the third position.
On the downhill, Van Aert took control of the pack as the Jumbo train entered the via Roma in the first position. Van Aert was leading, followed by Grosu and Van Poppel, with Demare, Sagan and Matthews closely following them
After Grosu made his launch, it was still anybody's game. Demare seemed to have a small edge over Van Poppel, but Sagan and Matthews were not out of the game either
Demare wouldn't be Van Poppel's main concern in the closing meters though as the Frechman appeared to have made his move a bit early. It was Michale Matthews who made one last final amazing push, but it was too late to deny Van Poppel the win of his career!

Turgis, Oss and S. Kragh Andersen put a very strong move late on in the race, but with Van Baarle and Van Aert in charge of the chase behind them their move had very little chance of making it to the line. Still, they were caught only as the race was about to reach its last kilometer
With the attackers caught, it was Jansen's time to shine as he launched Danny Van Poppel to yet another win, while getting himself a place on the podium in the meantime as well

A very strong breakaway today and after all the cobblestones sectors and hills have been passed it was clear they had a real shot at actually making it to the finish line. With all the other big teams represented in the breakaway, it was up to EF and Jumbo to bring them back, but despite Van Aert, Jansen, Teunissen, Naesen and Bettiol's best efforts it was clear today it will be the breakaway's day.
None of the escapees managed to put in an strong enough attack to make the difference in the final kilometers so all was settled down in a sprint. It was Trek's Edward Theuns who crossed the line in first place, followed by Valverde and Le Gac. What a win could it have been for Valv!

Van Poppel's current form has definitely not gone by unobserved by his rivals and today they did their best to isolate him from his team - mates. And it worked as once the final flat part of the race, only Van Baarle and Van Aert were left with him in the main group.
As we were getting closer to the finish line the attacks started. All were successfully neutralized by Van Baarle and Van Aert, but once the final sprint started they had nothing left in their legs to help Van Poppel.
Danny seemed lost without his team - mates and didn't have the best starting position for the sprint, which result in him only finishing in fifth place. Ackermann, Kristoff and Matthews battled for the win in a very close finish, where Matthews barely edged Kristoff to claim a second important win this season after Paris - Nice.

What is Groenewegen racing now Van Poppel gets the World Tour races?
Some stage races and flat classics are still his. It didn't make sense to still send him in these races now that Van Poppel is a good enough sprinter to contest for victories. It would be pretty hard to look after two leaders at the same time. So he hasn't lost much, just a couple of cobbled classics

The races started with two flat stages that ended in mass sprints. There was nothing easy about those stages though as multiple crashes in the pack saw a lot of riders getting out of contention for the GC or even abandoning the race due to injuries.
As a result of this all bar one of the remaining 5 stages were won by breakaways. Jumbo were present in three of the breakaways and after Vingegaard failed short by a few centimeters in the fifth stage, a stage win finally came in the last one. Grosu and Zakarin were the last survivors of a large and strong breakaway and when it came down to a sprint between of them there was no question who would be the winner. With this win and some good placings in the first two stages, Grosu also won the points classification.
Grosu celebrating his first win for Jumbo
The only stage after the first two that wasn't won by a escapee was actually the queen stage of the race. None of the favorites was strong enough to put in an decisive attack though and we saw a sprint for the stage win. Geoghegan Hart was the first across the finish line in a photofinish with Lopez, Bardet and Buchmann. Another win for Geoghegan Hart after UAE. Did INEOS find the new British Tour de France winner?

Falls, punctures and splits in the pack on the many cobbled sections saw a lot of natural selection being done before the decisive moments of the race. Last year's winner Jasper Stuyven was one of those affected as well as Sep Vanmarcke and Danny Van Poppel.
Jumbo was well represented in the main group
What was left from the pack after such a hard race split into two groups as the strongest 7 riders in the race would make up the final group that would fight for the win: Van Aert, Sagan, Lampaert, Van der Poel, Van Avermaet, Benoot and Terpstra. Going together with Sagan to the finish line would be a suicide mission and Van Aert knew this. As a result he tried to open the sprint early to surprise the others, but there was no surprising Peter Sagan today and the Slovakian champion took home the win.
