Like most early season races - in the context of the whole season the result needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. I mean it is all South Americans in San luis and all Aussies in tdu.
Still great ride from Porte who seems to be saying that he is feeling stronger than ever. Being a sky bot he isn't really used to attacking and probably left it too late. Impressive by Dennis, he and Dumoilin trying to do the wiggins style chrono to GC convert.
Good race for the garmin dump truck bobridge, van Hoff and Dennis. Looks like orica will go winless too not a surprise without gerrans but still will frustrate that team.

At those sorts of speeds, which was about 70-ish Km\H at the time, sometimes you have to wonder how riders can occasionally and very fortunately walk away with nary an injury. Unfortunately, I doubt you could eliminate all the risks without literally turning it in to that oft cited meme about turning races in to who has the best power meter numbers on a lab bike.
To be honest I think it has something to do with the volume of people tumbling around ontop of eachother. The more people just bouncing around eachother the less damage. The concrete is the dangerous thing, and as most of these cyclists A) Hit the concrete once and then hits bikes, people, waterbottles and stuff like that or B) Lands straight on top of another rider - Well things are not so bad. It is much much worse when a rider crashes alone, as it makes the risk of him surfacing into heavy and non-movable obstacles much higher. Sliding into a fence can hurt, sliding into a brick wall or a curb is almost destines to break you.

Fernandez 3rd on stage. That's just awesome to see him finally getting some nice results. I guess his stay at Caja Rural was a proper waste.

Yeah, ultimately he did leave it just too late but saying that I didn't expect Dennis to hang in there quite so well so props to him more than anything else.
Apparently a new record up Willunga for Porte (about 16 secs quicker than Gerrans/Slagter) but with those cross winds turning into a big tail wind for the climb.

By the way, I like the design of LottoNL. Jersey looks very nice in the moving peloton.

Just rewatched the stage only knowing that Porte won, but nothing else.
Was a great stage with a lot of nice moves.
Porte`s acceleration in the end was crazy. Really strong showing there. Dennis also very strong as also Fernandez of course.
Also nice to see Garmin`s talents with good performances. Moser hopefully can show more of his 2013 form this year. And also Villella with a decent race.

Oh ffs, because as we all know performing well as an Aussie on a 3km climb in January directly translates to the ability of riding a 3 week Grand Tour with multipe high mountain stages. Get real.

It will be just like last year where his winning on Willunga was precursor to a Merckx beating season and a clean sweep of all 3 grand tours |

First you will see the Australian channels. Channel 9 streams it online as well for free.
Then far below the international channels. |

I agree with you that people are getting a little carried away with what Porte did today and at the nationals in the TT, a 3 week GT with 6 mountain stages and riders like Contador in the field is a different ball game. Porte has yet to show he can go 3 weeks without a bad day, in saying that he does look like a changed riders this year.

Stage 6 - Adelaide Criterium (90KM)
An exciting 2015 Tour Down Under concludes on the streets of Adelaide with a 90 kilometre-long inner-city circuit. Will Marcel Kittel reign supreme? Or will the German be ruing yet another lost opportunity at the Tour Down Under?
Relocating back to its traditional finish on King William Road, the peloton will complete a 4.5 kilometre-long circuit that sees them also skirt around the revamped Adelaide Oval. The riders will complete twenty laps of the inner-city street circuit, measuring 90 kilometres, before bringing the curtain down on the 2015 Tour Down Under.
During the stage there is one Third Category rate King of the Mountain point on Montefiore Road that will be contested twice on laps ten and fifthteen. While the final stage can sometimes be a procession, Jack Bobridge still needs to be mindful about his close rivals possibly securing more points.
While the peloton may decide to let Bobridge retain the King of the Mountains jersey unchallenged, there will be no such sympathy for Orica – GreenEDGE and Daryl Impey in the Points classification. As an example, as the classification currently stands, if Lampre – Merida's Niccolo Bonifazio claims the stage victory then Daryl Impey has to finish within the top five placings to avoid a count back in the competition.
With time bonuses up for grabs at the intermediate sprints on laps eight and twelve along with at the finishing line; it will be interesting to see just how keen the General Classification riders are to improve their overall standing. As an example, Cadel Evans' podium position in the General Classification could easily be overhauled by Giant – Alpecin's Tom Dumoulin if the Dutchman claims three seconds.
Today's victory will likely be influenced by which sprinter has the best the sprint train thanks to the circuit being largely free of hassles, King William Road being several lanes wide and welled surfaced and the final kilometre sloping downhill slightly. Being well positioned close to the front of the speeding peloton and having a very fast straight-line sprint will be key.
The outright favourite to claim the stage victory today is understandably Marcel Kittel, with the German's inability to so far win a stage at the Tour Down Under the only mark against him. UniSA - Australia's Steele Von Hoff looks to be the German's strongest rival, with Von Hoff able to count on the powerful engine of Jack Bobridge for assistance in the lead up to the sprint.
Although an upset seems unlikely in the minds of many fans, the long list of those who will be waiting for slip up includes; Niccolo Bonifazio, Stage Two winner Juan Jose Lobato, Heinrich Haussler, Wouter Wippert, Gianni Meersman or Mark Renshaw, Giacomo Nizzolo and Daryl Impey.

Massive pile up in around the middle of the pack and splits the peloton! Marcel Kittel caught out, Michael Rogers reportedly caught out, still awaiting news on who else was caught up.

Wouter Wippert does it! Drapac Pro Cycling get that elusive stage victory at the Tour Down Under.
