@sutty: Thanks, it was really racing at its purest. That's one Raphael's strengths, and a Top 20 result is always nice for such a young rider.
Tirreno – Adriatico
The Race between the two Seas will be my first major professional race in the Cycling Circuit. It’s also my first stage race, like ever. Surely a honour for me to ride here in my first professional year, and I presume it’s an honour for Tirreno – Adriatico as well. Wish me luck.
Peter Sagan will be leading our team, while I function as a domestique as in the previous races. Our goal is nothing less than the overall win as this is what the sponsor wants from us.
The route suits us. Tirreno – Adriatico is famous for either being a preparation race for the MSR and thus even sprinters like Freire won the race in the past, or it’s more aimed towards climbers. Luckily, Sagan should have good cards in both regards. There are no particularly tough climbs at this year's edition, but there should be still plenty of opportunities to gain time on the rivals.
The team includes besides Sagan and me: Marco Marcato as the lead-out man, Oscar Gatto as a co-leader and eventually also Fabio Sabatini, Kristjan Koren, Cristiano Salerno and Matthis Krizek as helpers. We won’t have much freedom since most work will go towards Sagan presumably but maybe here and there we are allowed to make an impact as well.
Stage 1
Cannondale lose possible overall victory already on first day?
Rabottini won the opening stage of Tirreno – Adriactico in solo-fashion for his Yellow Fluo team. As the last surviving member of an early breakaway he managed to fend off the chasing teams of Belkin and Cannondale. With more than 2 minutes lead, Rabottini is a clear-cut favourite for the overall victory as well by now.
To say, it didn’t quite work out perfectly would be an understatement. We are already running risk of losing everything on the first day. Rabottini must have had one of his finest days ever as he was the only one to survive our chase despite all the effort we put into it. And not only did he survive, but he won by a huge advantage. Impressive.
I myself was chasing all day long though and doing some major work. Especially on the last 30 kilometers I managed to obtain and secure a high pace that saw some small splits in the peloton and it stretched on and on over the small hill passages, that were featured in the finale. This action by the team of course led to the main sprinters such as Kittel and Cavendish becoming tired. The sprint wasn’t easy won by Sagan, but he pulled it off nonetheless. I reached a nice 19th place too, but that doesn’t matter of course. After all the work and pacing duties I did today I am actually happy to still feel my legs.
At the team meeting we are mostly talking about new options for the race. Send out many of our riders in hopes one of them makes it. Attack and attack with Sagan or play the waiting game? More than 2 minutes, that’s a whole lot. And I… well, I see how they discuss our possibilities. Cyclo Cross used to be easier to understand. Less tactical.

Once again, lovely style. Without trying to be polite or something like that, I honestly have to say that i am not enjoying any story (except Trek ) currently as much as I enjoy reading this one.
Pure perfection, if you ask me.

Oh my, thank you admir. Really nice words, appreciate it a lot.
Sagan crash!
Tirreno - Adriatico, Stage 2
Race Leader Rabottini, Boonen and Sagan involved in mass crash
with merely a few kilometers left to race!
It looked like a typical flat stage for large parts of it. The usual suspects such as Cavendish, Kittel and Sagan let their teams do the work. The breakaway got a lead and got reeled back in again. Calm, sunny days in Italy for me at that point.
I was doing my work and actually already on my way back of the peloton to avoid a crash... Awfully enough, precisely that happened. And even worse, it happened to my captain, Peter Sagan. Merely a few kilometers from the finish, he crashed.
At that point, we had thought we lost Tirreno – Adriatico for good. After yesterday’s mismanagement, this was just the natural step down further. Marcato and Gatto stayed upfront as to keep the overall classification chances intact, I was the only rider near. I rode past Sagan and I saw him lying there. Naturally I stopped and wanted to help me. But I couldn't get through all those crashed riders.
Of course I waited. I stopped pedaling, looking through the crashed riders and I saw them all lying on the ground for a while. Sagan was one of the first to get back up. And then I saw Tom Boonen in there as well as Rabottini himself in his leader’s jersey! I was lightly stroking my pedal and waiting for Sagan to catch my wheel… When he got up, I immediately accelerated. We hit the road full throttle!
The sprint was won by Marcel Kittel ahead of Cavendish and Greipel. But we performed a race further back that meant much more to me, and I helped Sagan achieve something incredible!
I must have done some fantastic work for Sagan, keeping him protected for most of the 8 remaining kilometers since the crash. I just kept striking my pedals. And I really felt like I was going over my limits by nautical miles. There must have been a lighthouse by now somewhere, warning me that I was heading into rocky breakwater. I kept hitting myself against that rock. Yellow Fluo behind us, they just tried to keep our wheels. I had Sagan in my back and I was just powering myself out.
Eventually, with about 2 kilometers left and the finale right in full motion, I had finished my work for good as Peter came past me and sprinted for the remaining time. No, this wasn’t a sprint. This was full assault. He himself was the train, the lead-out and the finisher!
No one could hold his wheel. Peter didn’t tried to drop them, he tried to reach the peloton just in time to not lose any of it.
When I myself came into the finish, I couldn’t believe my eyes. Peter really made it. He arrived as the last rider in the peloton and was allowed their time! I myself lost quite some time alongside Boonen and Rabottini though. Something I don’t mind at all.
Stepping of my bike, I was greeted by the thankful cheering of Peter, who just thanked me and thanked me again. He was smiling, I was smiling, and I said sorry to Rabottini later. He could have won Tirreno-Adriatico if it wouldn't have been for Sagan's crash.
I was trying hard to keep standing. I was afraid if I fell down, I wouldn’t be coming up soon again. I finished 131th, with quite a time loss, but frankly, I don't care about that in the least.
Sagan on the left reached just in the last possible second the end of the peloton!

@baia: Thank you. He sure saved Sagan a bit there.
@SS2JLuigi: At least Sagan didn't lose time so everything's still cool.
@Ian Butler: Totally! He definitely showed his worth for Sagan and the team today. I don't think Sagan would have made it if he had relied on YellowFluo to bring him (and Rabottini) back.
@sutty68: He better be thankful. haha Both did great.

Tirreno – Adriatico: Stage 3 & 4
Germans taking over!
Tirreno – Adriatico saw two bunch sprints in the last two days, each one being dominated by one german topsprinter. While stage 3 featured a relatively flat profile, André Greipel had an seemingly easy win in Venafro. Sagan, still feeling the effects of the crash, merely finished 19th in the bunch sprint.

A much more interesting profile for the GC provided stage 4. Three climbs put up quite a hassle for the sprinters and the horrible rain as well as the wind didn’t stop Cannondale from making the race fast. At 60 kilometers it became more and more difficult to even bring bottles upfront. Cannondale had to waste two riders until Koren finally succeeded in this simple task.
Because Marcato couldn’t get up to Sagan in the fast downhill finish, I had the obligation to protet Sagan in the finale kilometers. Tough work, especially when you already did some major work in the relay throughout the race. And here I thought I’d have an easy day for once. Gatto meanwhile was inclined to choose a train on its own, going for his own result, since the finish suited him.
But I am no man of lead-out trains and good positioning yet. I lack experience, fast legs and even the talent. So I wasn’t much help to Sagan. I saw how he got cornered in the sprint by the FDJ duo Demare and Soupe, and when he finally broke free, there was no stopping Kittel in Tivoli. In fact, Sagan once more disappointed, while Gatto achieved a fine 9th place.
At that point it became clear that Sagan didn’t have the legs (anymore) for a bunch sprint, not after the previous crash. It made things tougher for us, but heck, we surely won’t give up.

Tirreno – Adriatico Stage 5
Kolobnev wins from breakaway in Torricella Sicura!
The Russian won out of the breakaway on this hilly stage. However, despite the gap of over a minute to the peloton, the leader’s jersey remains with Marcel Kittel. Peter Sagan from the very active Cannondale team brought in the peloton as fifth, while being unable to get a gap between himself and his rivals.
It was in fact a real shame that it didn’t work out. We had big plans for today, it should have been the perfect stage for him to at least take the jersey. But maybe it was too perfect, this way we were left to do most of the work with only Giant – Shimano doing some of the work. So basically two sprinter teams, where none decent mountain man was featured, dictacted the pace of the peloton. While Cannondale tried to drop guys like Kittel and Greipel, it just didn’t work. On the other side, the breakaway had a decent lead. Nothing to worry about.
I have to admit that we really tried here to make the race tough and in return, we powered ourselves out. At some point we weren’t able to maintain the pace and do more work. As mentioned before, we were mostly riding for the win here with occasional help from Giant – Shimano. When no other teams help you and their captain starts attacking, than you run into trouble. Sagan at least was going strong and tried his luck multiple times.
The long downhill suited him as well as the slight uphill finish. But unfortunately guys like Alberto Contador and Vincenzo Nibali had plans on their own, and by hunting Sagan, they created a long peloton with a huge tail... You know the consequence. We may have profited on stage 2 from the equal time for the peloton, but today we were on the losing side.
Today we may have seen that our team is just not up to supporting Sagan in a complete manner. We may have our moments but there are also weaknesses. Not a great day at all. I feel empty after a day of hard work and nothing gained. I finished 22nd today because I always kept myself upfront in case Peter needed me and before I knew, I crossed the finish line. It was just that damn fast.

Can you please bold Raphael's name, since it's a bit hard to find him in these rankings?
He's doing some good job so far!

@YvesStevens: But he came back. I think he feels a bit the injury though.

@baia: THanks. We'll see if he can cope with it for the last two days.
Tirreno - Adriatico, Stage 6
Albasini gets rewarded for daring late-race effort!
At a hilly route various riders, included yours truly Raphael Visconti, tried to make an early run for their money. However, the scheme did not work. Michael Albasini from Orica GreenEdge landed the winning attack eventually, while Jonathan Hivert moves into the leader’s jersey by just two seconds.
The intention behind my break was to gain a bit of an advantage and to finally put Cannondale out of the position to always take on the race from the front. The decision of the team management came mostly from the fact that I hadn’t lost so much time so far in the general classification, but lost enough time to may not be considered an immediate threat. I felt good throughout my time in the break but things didn’t last.
Cannondale must have got nervous again since Salerno and Marcato have been ordered at 100 kilometers to increase the pace. As a result of this, I was later back ordered to the bunch, while my companions rode away. Surely, the break was unlikely to make it but I was still disappointed that they had first sent me upfront just to tell me to get back again. I could have had a shot, and I deserved to have a chance.
So I was there again at the head of the peloton, being the first part of its spear. We set a high-pace and as usual, the peloton kept getting smaller but Greipel and Kittel they just wouldn’t drop. But the race got real tough at some point in the finale kilometers. Everybody knew that it would be decided today and so the attacks just kept coming. I dropped.
Albasini made the winning move and rode solo to victory. Surely he profited from his large gap to the leaders but his performance must have been great either way. And as for Rolland and Hivert, I guess people underestimated them at some point. Sagan was marked by various riders like Cancellara and Nibali throughout the stage. Despite his brave efforts and attacks, he just couldn’t get away. The more he powered himself out the faster the peloton reeled him back in. Ultimately, he didn't stand a chance in the sprint and could have been described as happy for finishing with the bunch.
I was at a loss for words when I crossed the finish though. We had missed our chance. Once again. I was pissed off. I tell you how it is, and the whole team was pissed off. I can accept when we’re just not doing enough and ain’t up to the task, but at times it seems that at this Tirreno-Adriatico our rivals deliberately just worked against us…Against us and nothing else. It was up to us to make the race, to catch the break, to instigate anything.Surely you may think: That's an awful thing to think, not the way of thinking for champions. Well, I ain't no champion.
And as for me: I got another 7 minutes on my account. That was just the icing on the cake of a disappointing Tirreno-Adriatico that hardly could be saved ahead of the last stage.

Tirreno - Adriatico, Stage 7
The misery of Sprinters
André Greipel took the last stage of Tirreno-Adriatico in the bunch sprint, however due to Marcel Kittel finishing 3rd, his german rival can claim the race’s trident as victory trophy. Jonathan Hivert came just 2 seconds short of his greatest victory of his career.
While the team treated this stage as a possible compensation for the missed overall win, I myself had hoped that Sagan could perform a miracle. After all, only a few seconds were between him and Hivert. It was nice day to ride in the peloton, finally not doing any work. Like no work at all. I was even spared from caring bottles. Yeah! I had a few good talks with some guys.
Cannondale management never gave me any orders to follow so I just kept sitting back and sure enough, kilometers flew by and the sprint was up. Sagan took at least a second place today, showing that he’s still got it. What ccould have been if there hadn’t be the injury, if he would have had just once a bit of luck with his attacks. Well, well… what could have been is not important anymore. Oddly enough, I am the last rider of the peloton to pass the finish. There was a huge gap behind me.
Overall I finish the Tirreno - Adriatico, 62nd, 8 minutes and 42 seconds behind winner Marcel Kittel.
I continue to be amazed by this race, but hope there will be tougher editions in the future to come.

I was worried about Sagan until stage 7. Looks like he might just be good enough to win Milan San Remo maybe.
I really like a Tirreno route which can result in a sprinter winning like we just saw, reminds me of when I won it with Farrar once.
- admirschleck - If you read some of that report you would have already realised he finished 22nd on that stage ........
