@ sutty68 & welker3257: very close indeed but yeah, good race for us, especially as it is a 2.1!
Objectives
- Overall win,
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points
Key Stages
Stage 1 - Hilly
Starting with a difficult stage with strong wind and Nerz as a favorite. We have to work to make sure the breakaway can be cought.
When Nerz attacks, no one can follow.
Neither could Ovechkin follows the chasing group. Nerz gets 1’ lead over Pliuschin, Moreno and Margaliot, Ovechkin is at 2’ with 10 other men.
Stage 2 – Hilly
In the final climb Nerz attacks and no one can follow.
This time Ovechkin does great too following the best.
Nerz now got nearly 3’ lead over Pliuschin and Moreno Bazan. Ovechkin is at 4’ together with Alarcon.
Stage 3 – Mountain
Still Nerz is third favorite ahead of Ovechkin. Summit is more than 15 kilometres from the line because of a long downhill.
Miller gets in the break and collects many points to pass Nerz in the KoM. We also get the team limiting the gap with the break.
With 10 kilometers to go in the big climb of the day, Ovechkin attacks and no one answers so he can create a nice gap of more than 3’. Then Moreno Bazan, the stage favorite counters all the other favorites answer but on his second acceleration no one can answer and Nerz has do run full spead in front of Pliuschin and Alarcon to limit the gap. Both of them counters before the summit and Nerz is left of out power and alone for the downhill.
At the front Ovechkin is loosing serious ground to Moreno Bazan. But he still manage to win by a small margin.
In GC Moreno Bazan is now leader with 30’’ on both Nerz and Ovechkin.
Stage 6 – ITT
Very few changes before the last stage. Only 19 km so Nerz should be OK for a podium finish. The real question is; can Ovechkin achieve a stage win and/or get back the 45’’ lead Moreno Bazan has built?
Very few suspense for the 1st question as Phinney gets the win with about 1’ lead. Ovechkin ranks a dispointing fifth at 59’’. Not good enough.

Wrap up
2/3
- Overall win,
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points
We miss the overall win, might be a bad tactic on the 3rd stage? However 3 stage wins, 2 Top3 and Points plus Mountain wins makes it a successful “Ruta”.

@ abelbaba: It would not : I haven't won overall after all
@ sutty68 & welker3257: I am OK for great race though
Things are moving on to Brazil where Ovechkin has won last year. So we can't expect less with such a stronger team!
Objectives
No change:
- Overall win,
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points
Key Stages
Stage 1 – Prologue
Ovechkin is second favorite to Bell. However Nerz’ great time (he finishes 7th at 5’' is a great encouragement before Ovechkin’s ride. He doesn’t disappoint offering himself a 3’’ margin victory.
Stage 2 – Mountain
Terrible stage. Ovechkin is 3rd favorite but to Rujano and Duarte, so he stands no chance. Does he?
We had no riders to control the break in the early stage on such a profile. So it gets a 6’ minutes lead. With none of the favorite in front of the bunch Ovechkin does a suicidal move at the beginning of the penultiame climb. For whatever reason the favorites let their team do the job. And of course they are no match to Ovechkin who soon got a 3’ gap.
Then Duarte attacks bringing an end to the feast. At the front Ovechkin passes the last break away man to take the lead.
Soon Duarte and Rujano are chasing hard and the gap is down to 1’10 at the start the last climb.
Strangely enough despite having no power left Ovechkin resists claiming an astonish victory in front of two of the best climbers in the world.
He now got 1’ lead in GC on the 2 men and has probably secured an overall podium place.
Stage 4 – Flat
Castañeda goes in the break and finishes with 11’50 over the pack to claim both the stage and the GC lead.
Stage 5 – Hilly
In the final hill, Duarte accelerates with Rujano and Nerz, the stage favorite in his wheels. Ovechkin suffers less than the yellow jersey but still looses a podium place that looked certain 2 days ago.
Nerz is beaten in the sprint for the stage win too.
And Castañeda closes an overall surpising win.

Wrap up
2/3
- Overall win,
- 2 stages,
- KoM or Points
Really 2 races in one: a wounderfull start and a very disapointing ending. Sure Ovechkin should have lost it in the last stage, but loosing the podium place? And what about Nerz unable to close a Top 10?
At the same time, the "Roelandts" team was participating to some 1 day classics:
Roelandts is very well placed in the final with still Castroviejo in shape to ride on the flat before the final cobble section. With 4 kilometres to go Hoste, the favourite goes and Roelandts cannot follow.
Castroviejo moves to the front and run very fast, with 1.8 kilometers to go, he has no power left and Host has a 35’’ lead. Roelandts has to launch his sprint from here with no sprinter directly in his wheel.
It wasn’t enough to catch the winner and hardly to resist Duque’s come back. But still a very good 2nd place!
Rank | Name | Team | Time | 1 | Leif Hoste | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's | 5h08'07 | 2 | Jürgen Roelandts | Dual Temp | s.t. | 3 | Leonardo Fabio Duque | Cofidis, le crédit en ligne | s.t. | 4 | Alexandre Pichot | Team Europcar | s.t. | 5 | Nico Eeckhout | An Post - Sean Kelly | s.t. | 6 | Daniel Lloyd | Endura Racing | s.t. | 7 | Staf Scheirlinckx | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's | s.t. | 8 | Wim De Vocht | Accent.jobs - Willems Veranda's | s.t. | 9 | Preben Van Hecke | Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator | s.t. | 10 | Wouter Mol | Vacansoleil - Dcm Pro Cycling Team | s.t. |
Roelandts is feeling great today so we were really expecting a win. We let the strongest teams do the chasing. But with Duque (Cofidis), Elminger (Ag2r), Champion (Bretagne) and Vanthourenhout (Landbouwkrediet) gone, no one is chasing anymore.
We sent Alberio in the front thinking it will make them react, but nothing happens. So Roelandts attacks too. Too late for the team who finishes with 2 disappointing Top 10 as Aleberio was also unable to close the gap to the best.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Leonardo Fabio Duque | 4h59'26 | 2 | Martin Elmiger | s.t. | 3 | Dimitri Champion | s.t. | 4 | Philip Lavery | s.t. | 5 | Sven Vanthourenhout | + 1'25 | 6 | Tomas Alberio | s.t. | 7 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. | 8 | Egidijus Juodvalkis | + 2'43 | 9 | Yukiya Arashiro | s.t. | 10 | Florian Vachon | s.t. |
Big sprint to conclude this race. Roelandts takes the lead with 1.5 kilometres to go as Vaitkus was in the verge to pass him.
It was very close but he has produced his effort a little too early and couldn’t resist the last metres.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Nico Eeckhout | 4h24'06 | 2 | Jonathan Hivert | s.t. | 3 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. | 4 | Tomas Vaitkus | s.t. | 5 | Florian Vachon | s.t. | 6 | Mathieu Drujon | s.t. | 7 | Leonardo Fabio Duque | s.t. | 8 | Steven Caethoven | s.t. | 9 | Paul Voss | s.t. | 10 | Leif Hoste | s.t. |
Another big sprint to conclude. This time Roelandts takes the wrong wheel and couldn’t come back at the front.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Mathieu Drujon | 4h42'56 | 2 | Kevyn Ista | s.t. | 3 | Bobbie Traksel | s.t. | 4 | Yukiya Arashiro | s.t. | 5 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. | 6 | Yauheni Hutarovich | s.t. | 7 | Wim De Vocht | s.t. | 8 | Denis Flahaut | s.t. | 9 | Jonathan Bellis | s.t. | 10 | Arnaud Molmy | s.t. |

@ all solid results both for Jurgen and in South America. I just regret to have simulated too quick the flat stage nb 4: it costed Artem a podium place and gave this giro an improbable winner
We are back in Europe for a 2.1 race. The way to remember that Italy is an old but strong country for cycling!
Stage 1 – Flat
“Nibali is here, Noncentini, Di Luca, Morabito, Elmiger, Niemiec, Basso… Our objective should a Top 5, the KoM and grab one of the two TT. The strategy is to follow Nibali. Today I want all the team to stick with him.”
A group of 45 riders sprint for victory. Ferrari is the fastest.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Roberto Ferrari | 1h54'52 | 2 | Manuel Antonio Cardoso Leal | s.t. | 3 | Rinaldo Nocentini | s.t. | 4 | Martin Elmiger | s.t. | 5 | Vincenzo Nibali | s.t. | 20 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | s.t. |
Stage 2 – TTT
The team was designed for this stage with Castroviejo, Ovechkin, Nerz, Hamilton and Miller all taking part. Not winning could be expected given the strong teams here, but loosing 1’05 is very disappointing.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Landbouwkrediet | 1h54'52 | 2 | Andalucia Caja Granada | + 3 | 3 | Atlas Personal | + 16 | 4 | Bmc Racing Team | + 16 | 5 | Movistar Team | + 28 | 14 | Dual Temp | + 1’05 |
Stage 3 – Flat
A break of two hardly maintain his lead on the line thanks to Cesar huge work to replace himself second in GC.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Sven Nys | 4h24'55 | 2 | Gustavo Cesar Veloso | s.t. | 3 | Roberto Ferrari | + 39 | 4 | Sacha Modolo | s.t. | 5 | Manuel Antonio Cardoso Leal | s.t. | 53 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | s.t. |
Stage 4 – Hilly
“Carson you go in the break to collect mountain points. Jonathan you can try too if you are allowed. The rest of team try to follow Nibali.”
Both Miller and Castroviejo make the break. Miller is working hard, Castroviejo taking no relay. Still Bruseghin close a 2’30 minutes gap and take a strong relay at the end of the big climb. Only Castroviejo can follow him.
The two will collaborate with Bruseghin, supposedly the strong man, doing the biggest part of the job.
Behind, the peloton is still not chasing and Felline who has attacked fails to close the gap. Finally the peloton is starting to chase but it is too late.
Castroviejo will take the yellow and possibly the stage. In the last up hill Castroviejo takes the lead. Bruseghin is too tired to follow!
Behind Nibali has attacked after Niemiec and is definitely the strongest. Nerz finishes the stage 12th in a group with Nocentini and Di Luca.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | 4h29'03 | 2 | Marzio Bruseghin | + 10 | 3 | Vincenzo Nibali | + 2'00 | 4 | Przemyslaw Niemiec | + 2'15 | 5 | Ivan Basso | s.t. |
Stage 5 – ITT
“Fantastic work yesterday. Jonathan, you should target a Top 3 and with the hilly stage tomorrow you should increase your gap today! You are second favorite to Nibali and with the yellow why not to claim a second victory in a row?”
Castroviejo manages well but might have sprinted a little bit to early. In any case, great performance again!
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Vincenzo Nibali | 18'14 | 2 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | + 1 | 3 | Ivan Kovalev | + 3 | 4 | Przemyslaw Niemiec | + 18 | 5 | Steve Morabito | s.t. |
Stage 6 – Hilly
“With the arrival after a big uphill plus down hill, Nibali will be hard to counter… The strategy is to let the break win to deny bonus to everyone. Dominique and Artem, you’ll stick with Jonathan, as soon as Nibali attacks you take the lead and run full spead.”
The break does indeed win, but Nibali did not attack! Moreover the tempo imposed in the last uphill has breaked the bunch and a lot of leaders finished far away. So both Nerz and Ovechkin enter the Top 10.
Cherry on the cake, Castroviejo wins the KoM contest despite being tight in number of points!
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Andi Bajc | 4h46'55 | 2 | Marco Corti | s.t. | 3 | Alessandro Maserati | s.t. | 4 | Marko Kump | s.t. | 5 | Morris Possoni | s.t. | 9 | Dominique Nerz | + 3'37 |
FINAL GC
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | 16h16'06 | 2 | Gustavo César Veloso | + 1'23 | 3 | Vincenzo Nibali | + 1'45 | 4 | Ivan Basso | + 2'26 | 5 | Przemyslaw Niemiec | + 2'54 | 6 | Dominique Nerz | + 3'33 | 7 | Rinaldo Nocentini | + 3'58 | 8 | Fabio Felline | + 4'21 | 9 | Steve Morabito | + 4'45 | 10 | Artem Ovechkin | + 4'53 |

@ all: I like like this
@ The Rider: Castroviejo perf on the 2.1 race is indeed boosting Dual Temp classification
Competition is huge for this HC race. Roelandts stays in front of the pack together with the impressive Green Edge field.
He then tries to stay with Van Summeren when he attacks close to the finish line.
But with the strong wind as soon as he lost the wheel he ends up out of power and passed by every body. We had the good strategy, just he wasn’t strong enough.

Expecting a revenge, Roelandts goes on with the
Stage 1 – Flat & Cooblestones
Poor sprint for Roelandts today after he has been tired by cobbles and steep uphills section. The good news is that Castroviejo managed to stay with the best.

Stage 2 – Flat & Cooblestones
Cobble sections were far from the finish. Big sprint. Roelandts sprint well but failed for the podium.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Matthew Harley Goss | 5h03'31 | 2 | Stijn Devolder | s.t. | 3 | André Greipel | s.t. | 4 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. |
Stage 3 – Flat
Very good stage as a large breakaway with no one dangerous succeeded, so all favourites have been denied bonus but Castroviejo who takes the first one. He ranks 5th at 14’’ before the final ITT stage.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Rikke Dijkxhoorn | 2h11'46 | 2 | Kristian House | s.t. | 3 | Tom Dumoulin | s.t. | 20 | Jürgen Roelandts | + 58 |
Stage 4 – ITT
Roelandts manages a very correct ride finishing the stage 20th at 38’’. A pity has he finally ranks 12th overall missing the Top 10 for 7’’.
But who wins? Definitely not Castroviejo who is in the worst form ever for this crucial stage. He finishes at a depressing 14th place of the stage and hardly saved a Top 10 when we were looking for a minimum Top3 at the start of the stage.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Gustav-Erik Larsson | 11'36 | 2 | Geraint Thomas | + 4 | 3 | Taylor Phinney | + 10 | 4 | David Millar | + 13 | 5 | Sébastian Rosseler | + 19 | 14 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | + 34 |

Total flat classic, Roelandts stays in Degenkolb’s wheel with 900m left he sprints on his own and catches everyone who has started too early.
Still Modolo to pass as he is celebrating too early!
What? Fuck$$ commissaries, can’t they see that Roelandts has won?

@ sutty68: I would say average perf
@ The Rider: Could you remind me who wanted me to hire a cobble guy? The non-Roelandts team members are hating me for having to ride on cobble and under the rain so often
@ welker3257: disapointing indeed, without a -5 form for Castroviejo it would have been positive though.
Stage 1 – flat
Roelandts takes Flahaut’s wheel. A very poor choice for a disappointing 9th place.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Samuel Dumoulin | 3h53'38 | 2 | John Degenkolb | s.t. | 3 | Tony Gallopin | s.t. | 9 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. |
Stage 2 – ITT
Castroviejo is favourite today. So we were very happy when he crossed the line in the same time as Gretsch, the 2nd favourite but with the 1st place.
Unfortunately Cozza beats the time and grab the yellow jersey too. Roelandts finishes at a good 13th place only conceding 15’’.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | Steven Cozza | 4h02'11 | 2 | Jonathan Castroviejo Nicolas | + 2 | 3 | Patrick Gretsch | + 3 |
Stage 3 – Hilly
Not very difficult stage though. Massive sprint ends it and Degenkolb wins it also taking the lead in GC with the bonus. Roelandts sprints great and is rewarded with a 3rd place so he moves in the top 10 with his bonus.
Rank | Name | Time | 1 | John Degenkolb | 4h26'24 | 2 | Tony Gallopin | s.t. | 3 | Jürgen Roelandts | s.t. |
Stage 4 – Flat
We have been lucky to have both Roelandts and Castroviejo at the front of the bunch to start the stage. They attack immediately to do 1-2 at the 1st intermediate and pursue for 20 kilometres for same result at the second.
Then they let the pack come back and after a classical breakaway, Dumoulin wins the sprint (Roelandts was apparently still tired by his early effort as he spinted very poorly).
Nice overall results though as Castroviejo stays in the Top 3 and Roelandts in Top 10.

A strong participation for this 1-day hilly classic. Nerz is our leader. He tries to stick to Vorganov’s wheel.
But the favourite breaks free and Nerz could hardly save a Top 10 with his sprint.

Roelandts has chosen the right wheel with Pineau's. But he couldn’t follow his punchy attack. He finishes with a descent sprint in Degenkolb’s wheel.

Stage 1 – Hilly & Cobbles
On the last cobble section, with less then 10 kilometres to go, Roelandts creates a nice gap with the bunch.
Unfortunately there is a uphill and a downhill sections following where he losses time to the stage favourite: Degenkolb.
The sprint will be too long for our rider…

Stage 2 – Flat
With an up hill sprint every thing happens in the last 2 kilometres. Trofimov wins it. Luckily for us, Popovych who finishes second has lost some time yesterday. We cross the line at a modest 20th place. Enough for an overall podium though!

On this modest 1.2 category UK race (just discover UK organise some cycling races :lol, being the best on cobbles, the best in hill and the best in sprint, very few suspense here.
Roelandts waits for the sprint to let Huff stick to the pack as long as possible. That has allowed him to grab the 10th place.
