Volta ao Algarve
Stage 3: Tavira – Alto do Malhão
A lot of riders expected this to be the day the battle for the GC started. But thing have been turned around on the first two stages and even more will be changed after today.
Pervyj is keeping everything together right from the start so when the first intermediate sprint is taken quietly by Stetina (DOM) ahead of Denifl (RBM) and Hernández (SGL) the break only has about a minute to the peloton.
The fast start have already made riders like Ertzen, Bakker and Guardini loose contact with the peloton.
Finnish champion Kjell Carlström (ITV) is first to cross the first KOM. Sabido (CCC) and Denifl follows.
The group has now a lead of four minutes, so time to see who accompanies the three: Bellemaker (ING), Hernández (SGL), Stetina (DOM), Boswell (CSC), Hayakawa (NAC), Partridge (TCW), Vandousselaire (MAG), Oliphant (ITV), Tennant (AXA), Nys (TCS) and Hunt (CAT).
Today the break actually sprints for the intermediate. Denifl takes it ahead of Stetina and Hernández.
The break has 70 km to go, 3’30’’ to Ted Mosby (TCW), who have gone solo and total 5 minutes to the peloton.
Sabido takes the 2nd KOM superiorly with Stetina and Denifl following.
Ted Mosby joins the break just in time for the next hill-sprint. Sabido takes another win ahead of Mosby and Stetina. 47 km to go and 5’30’’ between the front group and the peloton.
The peloton is down to 68 riders. Riders like Valls (BUL) and Ventoso (CCC) have now been lost behind.
Mosby pulls the break apart and only Sabido can stay with him. The Portuguese takes another KOM-sprint with 34 km to go.
The Duo has a minute to Stetina and Carlström, who has another minute to the remains of the break.
Now 6’30’’ from the front to the peloton.
Mosby takes the last intermediate sprint ahead of Sabido and Stetina.
1’42’’ from Mosby and Sabido to Carlström/Stetina, additional 49’’ to 8 riders and further 5’37 to the peloton. Looks like we might get a new GC leader today.
3 km to go for the front duo, where Mosby has been pulling since the sprint. Bagdonas and Costa have attacked from the peloton to join Tennant from the break.
Lots and lots of attacking from the peloton as Mosby overpowers Sabido in the sprint.
2 km to go for Bagdonas, Bardet and a few others are desperately fighting for the GC.
Costa is the strongest in the group, while Bagdonas get caught by the remaining peloton in the sprint.
Lots of broken dreams today. Pervyj tried their best, but just wasn’t strong enough on the hills.

What a stage by Ian today!!! A top 10 is more than what I was realistically dreaming about! Also, congrats to Mosby, nice victory. |

If Sousa hadn't won stage two this Volta ao Algarve would be a big disappointment. Now I propably won't even get someone in the top ten |

Hugo Sabido might take the GC, the moutains jersey and the points jersey still. Henao still did good. Good race for us then. |

Quite a few wasted race days here, thanks to breaks
The rankings are certainly going to be interesting. Its these type of races that will define the final outcomes
Also: Just missing SGM for Qatar now
(everyone pray Greipel doesn't go)

I really want to kill my riders right now... they could have chased, but apparently they don't think Bardet is good enough for a top 10 in the GC |
