A tough day awaits the riders here, 190km from Limoux to Foix. The temperatures are soaring at 32degrees which will add an extra difficulty to this already vicious stage.

The Race

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0002_zpsec8346e1.jpg
A group of 7 riders have managed to get away to form this mornings breakaway. They are: Molmy(Verandas), De Maria(IDEA), Aistrup(Concordia), Phelan(Drapac), Schweizer(Nutrixxion), Kaupas(Differdange) and Aitken(Jayco)

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0003_zpsc31dcd33.jpg
A further 5 men join them just a kilometre later, Solomennikov(Itera), Schmidt(RLM), Palandri(Amore), Hofland(Rabobank) and De Winter(Jong Vlandaaren).

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0004_zpsf1f5b476.jpg
The group was to big for the pelotons liking, and on the first of the days ascents, the Cat 2 Col du Portel, it comes back together.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0005_zpse87287ac.jpg
With 1.6km to go Lapthorne (Kotm 1st) sees his chance to take a genuine lead over rival Lowsley-Williams. He attacks in hop of collecting the 5points available on the summit.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0006_zpsdf332027.jpg
However, a poorly timed jump costs him those points. Lalouette takes the full 5, and Dennis follows him through for 3, leaving The KotM having to settle for just 1 point.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0007_zps865c3ab7.jpg
Beyond the climb a group of 10 forms with a lead over 3minutes. The members are: Dennis(Jayco), Hofland(Rabobank), Monreal(EMI), Kaupas(Differdange), Averin(Amore), Lampier(IG), Lapthorne(Drapac), Vorobyev(Itera), Hoberg(Concordia) and Vermeer(Nutrixxion).

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0009_zps25fc152e.jpg
Nobody within the break contested the sprint, more focused on the days 2 major climbs which were about to start. The break at this point held 6'37 over the chasing peloton, lead by the team of GC leader, Romero.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0010_zps9c26dbeb.jpg
with 69km to go and a gap of 7'46 it was starting to look good for the break, Lapthorne was towing up the climb and managing to stretch the gap, but will he have enough left for a sprint at the summit for the points?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zps63ae9ce7.jpg
Yes, with 1km to go the two aussies in the break go on the attack, the peloton seem to have almost given up, with 64km to ride the gap has stretcehd to 9minutes! Lapthorne manages to hold of rival Dennis at the summit, claiming the full 10points.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0012_zpsa30965fb.jpg
Suddenly panic seems to be spreading through the peloton. Lapthorne was only 12minutes behind when he started the day, and now threatening with a provisional top5!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zpsb9d19de8.jpg
41km to ride and the gap has grown further, now 11'33. The peloton simply isn't working today, and the 10men of the break look set to fight out the stage win today!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0014_zpsd5d30479.jpg
As the gap roles out to the crucial 12'50, Tom Vermeer makes the first attack for the Mountain points. Dennis again tries to follow but surprisingly no reaction from Lapthorne!

At barely more than a standstill, Vermeer leads the break over the summit of the Mur de Péguere. The gap is now 13'35, and the Australian Lapthorne is the new provisional leader!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0015_zpsba25a61e.jpg
At the top of the days final climb, a big split occurs in the peloton, only 42men make the front group. The biggest casualties are 15,16 and 21 in the GC.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zpsffd495a3.jpg
20km to the line and victory is certain for the break, who hold 12'30 still. The run in from here is slightly downhill, and there are no more climbs on the stage.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0017_zps4e8a91b6.jpg
15km... A trio from the break attacks, Vermeer, Hofland and Monreal.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0018_zps71fe8f8a.jpg
10km... Vermeer goes again, however with 10km to ride he already appears to be being reigned in, it looks unlikely for the dutchman

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0019_zps0b85558d.jpg
4.3km... The trio give it one last go, will the shorter distance allow them to stay away?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0020_zpsd1c6bf24.jpg
2.5km... All back together once more and Dennis is leading out the sprint. They will gain 10minutes today, so Lapthorne seems to be looking at a top10 place!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0021_zpsec4e6fc5.jpg
1000m... The Aussies are leading out the sprint. Hoberg is on paper the groups fastest man and does seem well placed, but it depends on how much damage the mountains have done his legs.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0022_zps07e4dae0.jpg
300m... Hoberg is leading, Averin is coming around the outside of Lapthorne, in what looks like the fight for second place.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0023_zps873c5c99.jpg
Hoberg gives Concordia the stage win, Lapthorne follows in second and Averin round out the podium, now onto the peloton behind them.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0024_zpsc08dfba2.jpg
In the peloton sprint for 11th place, Maillot Jaune, Romero hangs on to beat Daniel Loyd from IG Sigma.

The 158km from Samatan to Pau should be a late gift for the sprinters in the Points race. That being said, the day goes up or down all day long, so a tough pace could be enough to distance some of the weaker hill climbers in the group, if there teams don't properly look after them.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0001_zps94b2d64b.jpg
Both Differdange and RLM clearly back there sprinters to survive, getting on the front early and making it hard for the guys attempting to get a break started...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0002_zps0fd6817d.jpg
After 30km a breakaway finally seemed to have gone clear, the 6 men involved were: De Maria(Idea), Le Montagner(Verandas), Sybrandy(IG-Sigma), Bercz(EMI) , Stevenson(UKYouth) and Teuns(Jong-Vlandaaren). A collection of pretty commonplace names for an Underdog Tour break!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0003_zps3b204031.jpg
3 teams seemed keen to marshal the pack today, GC leaders Jamis, along with Roubaix for Flahaut, and Differdange for Maillot Vert wearer, Jonas Ljungblad.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0004_zps94d4b6f9.jpg
The break clearly had no interest in the sprint, in fact most were too busy collecting bottles from team cars to even notice there was a sprint! Never the less Sybrandy led the group over to collect the 800Euro bonus, leaving the Peloton to contest 7th place downwards.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0005_zps4ca6dd2a.jpg
Flahaut couldn't stop Vorarlberg sprinter Weissinger from taking 7th, but never the less, claws back another 3points on his swedish rival, bringing the gap to just 18points.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0006_zps6fcd6bca.jpg
With 50km to go the chase was yet to truly start in earnest. The break were pegged at just under 5minutes, but the pace behind was if anything, beginning to slow!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0008_zpse22b94ab.jpg
And clearly Miche rider Franzoi agrees! His team have yet to do much this race, and with no contender for the mountains, perhaps this attack with the classics leader will give them that boost they need?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0009_zpsbee6788a.jpg
20km to go... Franzoi has nearly made the catch, but the group is almost visible now for the peloton just over 2minutes back, it looks set to be a tight finish!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0010_zps56ccb770.jpg
14km... The break still has 2minutes, they could do this! Franzoi appears to have over estimated his ability to move across the 5minute gap solo, and seems unable to finish the job and make the catch. Meanwhile the sprinters teams still haven't picked up the pace, have they given the break too large a gap?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zps673d7d26.jpg
12km... Teuns goes on the attack downhill. He knows he can't match his companions in a sprint, and so is making use of the terrain to break them, can he cling on for that last 12km though?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0012_zps075c52b6.jpg
10km and it looks like the break have been gifted the stage! 2minutes is the gap, with the sprinters all appearing to have given up the chase, perfect for Ljungblad as th finish suited his rival much better than him!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zpsd12e506d.jpg
5km... Teuns is beginning to falter and the break are closing. He has 12" over The original break, and 1'27" over Franzoi, whilst the peloton itself follows at 3'05"

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0014_zps1d5981a0.jpg
3km... Still he's hanging on, still at 12" Can he manage the last few metres, or will the fresher legs behind close him down in the last few thousand metres?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0015_zpsd1ba48af.jpg
2km... The catch is made! De Maria decides he has to launch the sprint early and as a result is giving a perfect leadout to Bercz and Stevenson, with the UkYouth rider looking in prime placement to take victory.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zps0fa19529.jpg
Under the flamme rouge and Stevenson is running away with it, UK Youth look to be taking the stage victory.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0017_zpsba65f603.jpg
None could match the swedish mans pace, and its a convincing win on what looked an unlikely stage for the breakaway, perhaps the sprinters decides the days undulating route was just too difficult to make them effective competitors today.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0018_zps81ac60fc.jpg
The days late attacker Franzoi may never have got across to the breakaway, but he hangs on to take 7th place behind them, his best result of the tour, and now it's just a case of waiting for the final few key placings...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0019_zpsd48e0c4a.jpg
And indeed the key sprinters miss out on the big placings, Italian Frapporti wins the peloton sprint ahead of Tommy Nankervuis, whilst Rabo-Conti youngster Rick Zabel takes the final top10 spot.

Today gives us the queen stage of the Underdog Tour. 197km in length taking in 4 of the hardest climbs in France. We start with the Aubisque, followed by the Col du Tourmalet. From there it's straight into the Col D'Aspin before one final climb over the Col du Peyresourde, whose summit is 15km from the line.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0001_zpscbf9d1a5.jpg
Just 5km of racing give us a breakaway. 5 riders today: Nankervuis(RCC), McGowan(UKYouth), Ruyters(JVC), Le Corre(RLM) and Averin(A&V)

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0003_zpsbb59e312.jpg
Semple of Drapac and Molmy of Verandas manage to cross the gap, joining the front break 22km into the stage, and the 7 are given freedom by the peloton, at this point they lead by 3'46

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0004_zps97de5dbc.jpg
Drapac are clearly aware that the KotM jersey could be threatened today, Semple put in all the work up the Col D'Aubisque, and the 25points available on the summit.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0005_zpsa38b5833.jpg
Surprisingly, despite the major points already being claimed Christian Poos decided to attack the peloton for 8th place on the climb. He only held 1 point up until this moment, and he's 8minutes behind the break, will he try and join them?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0006_zps8e0c1a6e.jpg
It seems yesterday might have made Ljungblad nervous about protecting his Maillot Vert, despite the top9 places having been take he puts in a huge sprint to claim the available 5points.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0007_zps3c942274.jpg
With 90km to the line the riders begin the ascent of the Tourmalet. Jamis, Itera and IG are marshalling the peloton at the moment, with the gap being held steady at 9minutes

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0008_zps9dfa5a03.jpg
Poos and Retschke have reduced the gap to group E1 to just 2'53 as we reach the halfway point on the Tourmalet. a further 5'46" back sit the peloton lead by Jamis, but the pace is still quite slow at this point.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0009_zps5c7f1415.jpg
The first big split of the day, 77 riders miss out but fortunately none of the GC contenders are caught off guard. Finally the pace is creeping upwards, and the break has started to come back...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0010_zps6840e018.jpg
As Nankervuis leads the break over the summit at the Tourmalet, Poos makes the catch of the break. Retschke follows just behind him increasing the numbers of the first group to 9, 7'37 ahead of the peloton.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0011_zps34744e62.jpg
On the descent comes another attack from the pack, though still not by one of the favourites. This time its Jayco-AIS' Rohan Dennis whose made the move, but once again the day seems to be swinging in favour of the break.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0012_zpsff40984a.jpg
Having made it to the front of the race, Retshcke and Poos take over the majority of the relays within the break. they're doing an effective job and the lead is up to 8'46, but after the effort to get across the 8minute gap as a duo, have they got another 55 competitive kilometres in there legs?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0013_zpsfe888630.jpg
As semple leads over the days penultimate climb, it seems the pack have once again given up on the stage itself, the gap has reached 10minutes with 45.7km left, Though the teams will have to be careful, Averin sits in 17th place overall, 10'29 behind the Maillot Jaune, so if they don't get there act together soon, he could be the next man to profit massively from a breakaway!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0014_zps538cc99e.jpg
Attack! 2km off the summit of the Col D'Aspin, Cesar Grajales has clearly got bored of the waiting game! Will we see a response from his rivals? or will they hope Jamis can reel him in?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0016_zpsc75033f0.jpg
As he reaches the crest of the Aspin, his offical time gap to the peloton containing the rest of the top10 stands at 1'16. Bontrager have come to the front with Mannion and Craddock, so clearly the US favourites are concerned about the attack...

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0017_zps7c6a9e2d.jpg
He's giving it everything downhill, and has caught Rohan Dennis who attacked on the Tourmalet. His lead is 1'28 and rising, but still we see no response?

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0018_zpsd92e6c0b.jpg
A mass response on the downhill was enough to bring the gap back to 30" but teams have had to burn dometiques whilst he recovered downhill, will he go again..

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0019_zps392d3e94.jpg
As soon as the catch is made of the duo, GC's 4th - Zanasca decides it's the time to go, Jamis are down to 2 doméstiques, so he might have timed this to perfection

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0020_zps5bc219a0.jpg
Ignoring for a moment, the drama behind The break reach the 20km to go mark with a lead of 8minutes dead. Considering they're only looking at another 5km uphill, they should be on for the stage win, for the third day in a row.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0021_zps1bd506c3.jpg
As the gradient ramps up to over 11%, Grajales makes another attack. Zanasca sits just 40" up the road, so if he can close that gap, the duo could become a major threat!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0022_zps3f6f0bb0.jpg
Grajales has nearly caught Zanasca, but the real action has occured behind. A frantic attempt to shut there moves down has torn the pack to pieces. The key section of the race is as follows. E3(Grajales+Zanasca)--45"-->E4(GC 1,2,3,5,6+1helper>E5(GC 8,9,10+7others) and then the rest follow another 47" behind that!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0023_zps7ecf0df3.jpg
With 1600m to the top of the climb, Grajales and Zanasca hold 49" over a chasing duo of Goos and Vrecer, and 1'27 over the rest of the favourites who follow in a 14man group. The gap to the front runners is now only 1100m aswell, they may yet catch the break!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0024_zps96491334.jpg
More drama! Maillot Jaune, Lucas Romero has cracked and is now over 3minutes behind Zanasca and Grajales. Dombrowski sits in a group of 5 along with Stevenson(Concordia)between the two, following 2'05 behind the duo, making Italian Zanasca the current GC leader!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0026_zpsede5b770.jpg
Right out the front, the break has broken massively, and a duo of Averin and Semple are leading the way. They've only got 10km to the line, and will hang on for the stage win.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0027_zps299bc49c.jpg
5km to go and Vrecer has nearly caught Zanasca and Grajales. The duo still have 2minutes over Dombrowski, and over 3minutes over the GC leaders. It may have taken a while to get going, but today has given us the action we were all hoping for!

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0028_zps9e09f26e.jpg
Semple takes the stage win! Drapac have had 2 fantastic days, and Semple rode fantastically all day for this victory on the races hardest day.

i1337.photobucket.com/albums/o672/baggieboys33/PCM0029_zps048de8eb.jpg
Grajales takes the highest place of the GC contenders, followed by Lucas Zanasca. behind them follows Robert Vrecer who started the day 3rd, and looks set to pull on the Maillot Jaune, so now we just wait to see how much time people have lost today...

Review

So a day which saw an incredible amount of action, Semple moves beyond his team mate Lapthorne into the KotM jersey, giving Drapac 1st and 2nd in that competition at this point, A 3rd consecutive day for the breakaway which gave another success to the day for the Aussie, who also took the stage win in a 2 man sprint.

Aside from the action right out in front, we also saw the climbers shaking up the GC today, something we can expect once more tomorrow, and to have just one mountain stage left, and still have 5 guys within a minute of each other at the top, shows just how competitive this races Debut has been!

Romero suffered towards the end of the day, along with Fan favourite Joe Dombrowski, who really suffered in the last 10km of the stage, perhaps this was one day too many for the youthful American? We'll see what he has to say in a moment, as he's agreed to join us for interview!

Interview with Joe Dombrowski...

Joe, by all accounts a tough day for you today, that final climbed really seemed to take it out of you?

JD: Yeah I wasn't feeling great all day but the boys gave everything to look after me. Once Cesar went I knew all I could do was limit my losses, and Lawson has kept me in the race, giving everything to look after me up the climb...

Are you suffering with the length then? A few stages too many perhaps?

None of the guys competing here are used to 3 week races, we're all starting to feel the effects of that. I guess being younger probably doesn't help me but i wouldn't say I was worse than any of my rivals really, I just had a poor day at the wrong time.

That being said, you're only a minute down. Do you think you can still come back?

Of course! I've already got stages to my name here, so i've shown I can climb with the best. Tomorrow is a new day, my team kept me in the race today and i've got 2 more decisive days in which I intend to repay them. The TT will suit me better than many, so watch at Paris!

Okay thanks Joe, good luck tomorrow, we hope you're feeling better for tomorrow, it looks like an exciting stage!
