Stage 6

Vinokourov won the last stage in Switzerland, but that was not enough to take Samuel Sanchez from the first place. CSC men didn't had a good day with Vandevelde 1'43 and Andy 2'11 behind the winner. Andy still secured a top 10 place while Vandevelde finished the race in 14th place.

Giro D'Italia Race Preview

The first Grand Tour of the year is here and CSC has decided to take the veteran Bobby Julich to lead them. Lombardi is the man to the sprints but the competition shouldn't make it easy for him to fight for a win.

With two long flat time trials and one climbing, Julich will have to hold on in mountains days. The team will try to support him and a top 3 place would already be a good result, although the ambition of the sponsors is huge and they expect nothing less than a GC win.

CSC Line Up

- B. Julich
- C. Vandevelde
- A. Schleck
- J. Piil
- D. Zabriskie
- A. Peron
- P. Luttenberger
- L. Roberts
- G. Lombardi

Top Candidates

- Jan Ullrich - Despite his ambitions on the Tour, the team has decided to sent him to Giro. With no big results this season, he should build his fitness during the races and if so, he can be someone very hard to beat.

- Denis Menchov - The russian of Rabobank has just celebrated a stage win in Romandie which shows that he comes to Italy in form. A great time trialist, he can really win this years Giro.

- Floyd Landis - The american like Ullrich have big ambitions this season and also comes to Italy with few race days. One thing is for sure, he can win it!

- Gilberto Simoni - Last year Simoni was 2nd behind Savoldelli which is enough to consider him a candidate. Racing in his home country, he'll have a lot of support and this is his main goal of the season. Against him, more than 100 km of flat time trial that he'll have to counter on the mountains days.

- Levi Leipheimer - Gerolsteiner rider is a guy that can win this, since he can hold great on both mountains and time trials. With a strong support of his team, he's definitively an opponent to the main favorites.

- Francisco Mancebo - AG2R leader is one of the worlds best climbers and this season he was 3rd on Paris-Nice, after last years great performances on both Tour (4th) and Vuelta (3rd). He's not a specialist in TT, but the spaniard can hold pretty well on a good day.

- Leonardo Piepolli - The second italian on the candidates is really a very strong and powerful rider on climbs, but he lacks on time trials. With 34 years old he will want to make a great Giro.

- Alberto Contador - The 23 year old spanish is destined to be a cycling superstar. His second place in Romandie, after last year he had been 4th shows his progress. We can expect him to attack and on time trials he can also do something big.

Sprinters Competition

- R. McEwen - He is considered the best sprinter in the world, as long as the road is flat all the way. There are about 9 stages that he can win in the Giro, so his presence is natural here. With just one stage win this year he will come thirsty for victories.

- T. Hushovd - Lat years Tour green jersey is a very complete rider and a very good sprinter. After McEwen he is clearly the best sprinter here. Expect him to perform well and to rise his arms at the end of a stage. Something he still hasn't done this year.

- Jan Kirsipuu - With stages won in Tour and Vuelta, the veteran from Estonia is still a great sprinter and he might well grab a win or two if the others relax for a bit, and join Giro to his curriculum.

- Danilo Napolitano - Racing at home Danilo will want to celebrate and his team will provide him all the support for him to achieve it.

- Erik Zabel - 6 times green jersey in Tour his name is already in History of Cycling. He comes to Italy without Petacchi and he will for sure use his experience to get some good results.

- D. Bennati - Another italian that is showing up with good results and that might get something out of flat stages. The 25 year old is very fast and he can hold hills and mountains better than the pure sprinters. Home racing is also and advantage to him.

- Isaac Galvez - The spanish that is also a track rider has won a stage on Vuelta a Castilla e Leon and despite not being among the main favorites his speed could give him a win.
Spoiler
Because i didn't remembered this guy, i searched for him in wikipedia and what i found was terrifying: "He died during the Six Days of Ghent (25/11/2006) cycling event in Belgium after colliding with Dimitri De Fauw and crashing against the railing. He died from internal bleeding. At the time of the accident he had only been married for three weeks. After this, De Fauw suffered from depression and he committed suicide on November 6, 2009." This video is dedicated to him. RIP

Hope to see Contador here Wink

I remember now, years ago that a rider had died during the 6-daagse here. I didn't know it was him at the time though... Poor guy.
Cycling can be a dangerous sport, people tend to forget that.

Giro D'Italia Stage 1

The first stage is completely flat. Perfect for McEwen. CSC will try to do something but it will not be easy with so many good sprinters better than Lombardi and Roberts.

Konychev still resists but but the break is over with 10 km to go.

With 4 kms to go Lotto's train is perfectly preparing McEwens sprint. Zabel is on his whell and CSC men are behind him. Cofidis has also formed its train to J. Casper who has Gasparotto and Napolitano right behind him.

Tom Steels launches the sprint for McEwen...

And McEwen takes it! Perfect job from Davitamon-Lotto! Roberts is 10th while Lombardi was 12th. Not bad for CSC sprinters.

Meanwhile in 4 Jours de Dunquerque, Lars Michaelsen made a very good 4th place on overall classification.

The Giro will have a break day now and than we'll have 2 hilly stages that could find us another protagonist after McEwen brutal start!

Ian Butler
McEwen is untouchable here Wink

Schleck96
McEwen is rocking and rolling, nothing can stop that man, that's for sure.

sutty68
A steady start for the team in the Giro Wink

And a nice fourth place for Michaelson in France Wink

Giro d'Italia Stage 4

Today we have an almost entire flat stage with the exception of the 2 km final climb. Some sprinters can get to the finish and get the win, so placement will be essential on today's stage.

CSC will worry to don't let Julich lose time or non of the other favorites win time. Bettini is the main favorite, and Di Luca and Pellizotti are the guys who can challenge him. Bettini will try to get the yellow today.

With 8 km to go the BOD is about to be caught. The pace is very high and only 120 riders are on the peloton. The fight for a good placement has begun.

McEwen managed to arrive with the peloton and he holds the maglia rosa one more day. CSC did a good job securing Julich position. Tomorrow the race will be tougher and bigger gaps may occur.

Omt78
Hope Jan can win a stage at the GiroSmile

ady7zu
Soo Julich as the team lider and next year he will switch places with Andy?

kimiopn
@ Omt78 - I believe he can. Even the GC.

@ ady7zu - Depends on how Andy will develop, since he's just 20 now. Vandevelde is also a good rider that have the potential to be a GT leader

sutty68
Nice to see Lombardi get into the top ten on the GC Wink

kimiopn
@ sutty68 - He's there because...he worked a lot on the last stage! He was important speeding up the pace before the last 2 km and a lot of guys ahead of him on GC were left behind Smile But on the next stage he should go down on.

Giro D'Italia Stage 5

Today we have a tougher stage than yesterday but the main candidates to win it are the same, as well as CSC objective: keep Julich with the first men.

With 25 km to go, the BOD has over a minute and the peloton is reduced to 66 men. Incredibly, McEwen is holding on. Two more 3rd category climbs before the finish.

A great exhibition by Liquigas today getting the first two places with Garzelli and the young Vicenzo Nibali. They have brought a great team to the Giro with Di Luca, Pellizotti and Cioni, all of them great riders capable to get stage wins.

CSC once again achieved its goal securing Julich position on the GC. Now we'll have a flat stage followed by the first time trial where Zabriskie could be a candidate to win and Julich can gain some time to the overall guys.

Jan Ullrich and Floyd Landis are now away on the GC and they're out of Giro discussion.
