Dominik Nerz: The Third Year
sutty68
Great to see Dominik in the Mountains jersey Grin

PCM rulezz
Nice jersey for Dominik, he deserves it after the difficult stage for him.

This keeps coming up and annoying me for some reason Wink
taylor-made

But it's tailor-made, unless your tailor is also called Taylor Pfft

Moving on, things are looking good for Dominik. Hopefully dropping back has saved him some energy for defending that jersey!

xah
Classic PCM logic, Löfkvist outsprinting Sagan...energy left is far too important compared to the sprint stat!

Anyway, congrats on the mountain jersey Grin

Ian Butler
Love your lay-out. And must say, that mountain jersey is looking impressive Wink let's hope he can keep it!!

Thanks guys. I'm very happy with the jersey so far. In his shape, a good overall is not possible, so the polkadots would be the optimum.

@ pcm2009fan: Thanks for the hint Wink I immediatly changed it and hopefully, I won't make that mistake again.

@ xah: Yeah, it's weird. Sagan didn't even lose that much energy, yet he had no chance... But maybe he'll strike back Pfft

@ Ian: Thanks mate, I put quite some time in all the graphics and stuff, so it's nice to know that it's appreciated Wink

Last stage will come soon Smile

Vuelta a Castilla y León - Stage 3

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Castilla%20y%20Leon/Profil3_zps93ecaf69.jpg

The decisive stage. Three hard climbs await the riders. The last one might be a bit too long from the finish to allow single riders or small groups to stay clear.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/myplan_zpsaa921d55.jpg

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Nerz3_zps96cab63f.jpg

This is much more my terrain. I have the freedom to get into the break again to secure my mountain jersey. As for the team, it's questionable whether Marco Marcato will be able to get over the mountains at the front, considering yesterday's performance. So it's up to either Damiano Cunego or Peter Sagan to make for a good result. Sagan is also a good bet for the stage win once again.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/livetickersmall_zps74e1edeb.jpg

4The first attacks are coming, but UniCredit is controlling the field.168
.
15UniCredit is still not letting anyone go...157
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-1-1_zps2ea9a371.jpg
17And here we see the reason why: Dominik Nerz is on the attack!155
.
21The peloton seems to be willing to let them go, but several riders try to bridge the gap.151
.
3211 riders were evidently too much for the peloton. Some of the former escapees try to get away again!140
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-2-1_zpsd3086459.jpg
36So, seven riders are two minutes in front with Emanuele Vona a bit behind. Nerz is by far the best climber in the group.136
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-3-1_zpseb753ba4.jpg
43Nerz only manages to get fourth over the first mountain. He's six points in front of Garate now. That'll be a tough battle on the coming mountain. The group meanwhile increased the advance to five minutes.129
.
65Seven minutes now at the bottom of the second ascent. 107
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-4-1_zpsf72b1fde.jpg
78Dominik comes in third over the top! He has now 12 points over Urtasun, which means a fifth place for Dominik or no first or second place for the Spaniard on the last climb, and our young German has the jersey in the bag!94
.
108At the bottom of the Puerto de Navacerrada, the groups is only four minutes in front. 64
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-5-1_zps17546654.jpg
114The first major attacks come as Tejay Van Garderen (T-Mobile) and Markus Fothen (NetApp) try to escape.58
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-6-1_zps48b2e4fc.jpg
119When the attackers and the peloton are closing in, Nerz decides to attack with 5 kms from the top!53
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-7-1_zpse10dcf1f.jpg
120Meanwhile, Damiano Cunego simply rode away from the peloton, chasing the group in front of him on his own.52
.
121He catches up pretty soon.51
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-8-1_zps79f3881e.jpg
124Nerz makes it! He wins the mountain sprint and takes the jersey. Behind him, Benat Intxausti (Euskaltel) and Damiano Cunego are a bit in front of the main peloton.48
.
131So on the descent, the situation is as follows: Nerz is still leading with a bit more than half a minute to Intxausti and Cunego. Those two are 1'20 in front of a main pack of 50 riders, including Sagan and Marcato.41
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-9-1_zps3a7b630f.jpg
142Spilak jumped to the duo, and they caught up with Nerz.30
.
148They get caught soon after, though. Spilak attacks again immediatly, Bakelandts and Cunego counter.24
.
158It's mostly Sky that brings them back. Xavier Florencio (TV3) is the next one to attack.14
.
162Spilak is relentless. He tries again and again!10
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-10-1_zps4d470ca5.jpg
164Nerz has to pay the price for his work in the break, he falls back. But his job is done.8
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-11-1_zps01387bac.jpg
166Benat Intxausti launches another attack. With six kilometers to go, Peter Sagan decides that it's too dangerous and follows!6
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-12-1_zps289cf0e6.jpg
168On the final descent, Sagan sets the accelerates again! He can create a gap to his chasers!4
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/3-13-1_zps5d73fd81.jpg
172Sagan wins! He takes it before Jan Bakelandts (Lotto) and Daniel Navarro (Movistar).0
.
172But Bakelandts and Navarro only take the spots three and four in the overall classification. Sagan wins the Vuelta a Castilla y León with two seconds due to his bonus seconds collected on stage one, Marcato is second. Sagan also wins the points and young riders classifications, Nerz of course the polkadots.0

What a day! A perfect ending for this short stage race for our team. Peter Sagan redeemed himself from his rather weak sprint yesterday, the 1-2 in the overall is fantastic. And of course we won all jersey (and the team classification by the way).

For me, it's just great to add another jersey to my palmares. Today went much smoother than yesterday, although I have to say that under normal circumstances, I should have won the first two mountain sprints easily against that competition. But I'm peaking for the Giro, not for the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon, so I'm fine with it.

While Sagan and Co. start the Ardennes classics tomorrow at the Amstel Gold Race, I'll travel to Italy. The Giro del Trentino is up next!

See you then,

Excellent race, that jersey is a real trophy, he earned it big time Smile It was a great report and very nice to read!
Though one small remark, it's Bakelants, not Bakelandts. In the result it's correct but in the report it's wrong. Of course, doesn't matter much Wink

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/race_zps661bcb33.jpg

The Giro del Trentino is a four days stage race in the north of Italy. It was firstly held in 1962 and 1963, but regularly only since 1979. Because of its hard stages in the Alps, it's a great preperation for the upcoming Giro, which is why he race has mostly had a rather strong line up. Record winner is currently Damiano Cunego, who won three times between 2004 and 2007. Last year, Dario Cataldo celebrated the victory.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/route_zps039b2c3f.jpg

As said above, the Giro del Trentino has a very challenging route. Four stages only, but three of them end with major climbs.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage1_zps92643f8f.jpg

But first, the riders have to prove team work and time trialing abilities on a 15 kilometers long team time trial. The time differences should be kept within bounds, though.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage2_zps59da3b93.jpg

The first two thirds of stage two are relatively easy, until the pack hits the first long, tough climb. Two mountain sprints and a descent later, the final ascent leads them up to the Sant'Orsola Terme.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage3_zps5092006f.jpg

A similar scenario provides stage three, with small differences: The penultimate climb is followed by a longer flat segment, and the finish isn't located on top of the again very tough last mountain, but after a small descent.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage4_zps57cae07d.jpg

The Passo Pordoi and the way to it are both the longest and the least challenging climb of this race. Yet, differences are expected.

Overall

Especially the Italians are to watch in this race, but they have strong competition in the UniCredit duo, Urán, Fuglsang and some outside shots. The question that stands over every one of them is their shape. Brajkovic starts his season, Nerz has only raced the Vuelta a Castilla y León, the other favorites vary between 8 and 17 race days, none of them has any results so far. It's going to be an interesting race!

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/team_zps5938d7b4.jpg

UniCredit comes to Italy with a double leadership of Dominik Nerz and Janez Brajkovic. Brajkovic is usually a bit better climbing-wise, Nerz comes with a slightly better form. The decision will probably be based on the daily shape.

Agnoli and Caruso will be the domestiques, Bodnar and Burghardt are mainly here to limit the losses in the TTT. In general, except for the two cobble riders, no one's in a very good shape.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/nerz1_zpsdfe23fda.jpg

Finally, I have some sort of a leading role. I really hope that I nab a good day or two, so that I might have a chance for a good overall placement. A Top 10 is my minimum goal, but with this line up and my shape, it's quite unpredictable.

Giro del Trentino - Stage 1

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/stage1_zps92643f8f.jpg

The race starts out with a 15 km long team time trial. Maximum differences are expected to be around a minute, so no one will lose the race here. Still, you might win just the deciding seconds today.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/myplan_zpsaa921d55.jpg

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/nerz1_zpsdfe23fda.jpg

I'm still not in top shape, and since that applies for the whole team, our sole aim is to limit the losses today. Janez and Maciej are two good time trialists, plus Markus and myself, if we bring it down to half a minute, that would be nice.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/2013%20Banner/livetickersmall_zps74e1edeb.jpg

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-1_zps6620736a.jpg
The first team to start today is Astana. The former World Tour team is relying mostly on national riders and young talents now, but sets a really good time!

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-2_zps470ae1dd.jpg
Colnago around favorite Pozzovivo is next. They aren't known as a particularly strong time trialing squad and finish 28 seconds behind Astana.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-3_zps36185820.jpg
Leopard was the top favorite for today with riders like Fuglsang and Pinotti. And for now, they set the new best time – three seconds faster than Astana.

Sky does a decent ride, finishing only 5 seconds slower

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-4_zps761250a2.jpg
Katusha brings two decent climbers to Italy, Branislav Samoilau and Daniel Moreno. They don't do anything extraordinary today, 17 seconds behind Leopard.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-5_zps9ca3286e.jpg
Vacansoleil has no high ambitions in this race, but still they stunn everyone with a great performance. They beat Leopard by parts of a second.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-6_zps39d9fe51.jpg
BMC has a top favorite in Ivan Basso. Mediocre ride today, 15 seconds behind.

Nokia rides for Chris Anker Sörensen. They finish only 11 seconds slower than Leopard, very convincing.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-7_zps5fd8ee00.jpg
The value of this time becomes clearer when GreenEdge finishes two seconds slower.

Wow! We have a new best time! Ag2r rode so fast that the cameras weren't able to catch a photo of them! One second faster than Vacansoleil.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-8_zps1e4194c0.jpg
UniCredit is on its way. But they really struggle: Already 28 seconds behind on the first checkpoint.

Coming in next is Quick·Step! Strong performance, same time as Vacansoleil and Leopard, second place!

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-9_zps9cdf71c2.jpg
Lampre rides for Michele Scarponi, but it's not their best day. 22 seconds behind Ag2r.

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Giro%20del%20Trentino/1-10_zpsed83a793.jpg
As the last team, UniCredit comes in, eventually 45 seconds behind the winners of the day.

Well. We knew that it would be hard, still, looking at the times of the others, we probably hoped for more. But it doesn't matter, team time trials are always tricky and 23 seconds on Scarponi, 29 on Basso, that's okay.

Tomorrow will hopefully be more to our liking!
