Saur - Sojasun
Tuco the Ugly
Tour de Suisse: Stage 3: Sierre - Schwarzenburg: 204.5km

The third day in Switzerland would see another imposing climb in the middle of the day. However, unlike yesterday, the day would continue to go over rugged terrain until the finish line in Schwarzenburg. It is unlikely anything decisive will happen today, but it will be an indicator for the larger mountains to come.

Jérémie Galland made the breakaway group today. He would be joined by 8 other riders. Perhaps the most notable rider in the group was Thomas Löfkvist (Sky).

Löfkvist pushes the pace as the rider approach the Mosses.

Up the 18.5kms of the Col de Mosses, the breakaway pushed it hard. Their high pace demanded a response from the peloton. With more than half the race left, every rider was nearly at their limit.

In the peloton, Casper, and the other sprinters soon fell back.

As the main field splintered, the break broke apart. Löfkvist, Rubens Bertogliati (Androni), and Sebastian Langeveld (Rabobank), would leave the group and ride over the top of the Col de Mosses alone, 7'55" ahead of the peloton.

The three leaders on the road had a healthy lead at the top of the high point for the day.

Despite Langeveld's inclusion in the break, Rabobank were forced to pull hard to protect Paul Marten's overall lead. This caused further splintering of the main field. Jonathan Hivert and Jérôme Coppel both were having disappointing days and fell off the pace.

Galland's portion of the break was caught and dropped fairly quickly, as the ever-shrinking peloton chased the leading three.

The second major climb on the day finished with 30km to go. The peloton would reach this point with 34 riders and a deficit of 1'45". Sébastien Joly was the only Saur rider.

The small group that made up the peloton.

The leading three riders were out of energy after that climb, and their lead would crumble quite quickly. As they were overtaken, attacks from the favorites began.

Big favorite Fränk Schleck was the first rider to make a substantial move.

Schleck goes on the offensive.

This would immediately prompt a response from the day's other marked man, Philippe Gilbert.

Gilbert won't let Schleck escape without a fight.

Both riders showed remarkable resiliency, but neither were quite sharp enough to create the space needed for a winning move.

Joly and some other riders would try a half-hearted move, but as the finish line neared, it was the clear, the winner would win in a sprint from this small group.

Even with Alexandr Kolobnev's puncture earlier in the day, resulting in him finishing 101st, today would be a good day for Russia, with Vladimir Efimkin taking the sprint ahead of fellow countryman Sergueï Ivanov.

A well deserved victory on a hard day of riding. What appeared to be fairly tame parcours, certainly separated the elite from the rest of the field.

Efimkin celebrates a magnificent win.

Joly is doing good so far.

Tuco the Ugly
@ roturn: Unfortunately, only Joly is doing well...see below.

Tour de Suisse: Stage 4: Schwarzenburg - Wettingen: 192.0km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/455.jpg

The fourth stage of the Tour de Suisse will see the peloton head north to the town of Wettingen. Overall a fairly flat day, the peloton will go through the municipality of Regensberg twice towards the end of the day. The small rises into the town will be the only areas of the course that could see some action.

A break of 14 riders formed in the early stages. No Saur riders made the move, as much like the second stage, the team wanted to have riders with Jimmy Casper, in hopes the sprinter could figure in the finish. The team had come into the race with hopes of a stage win, and so far, has not come close.

The break moves through Zofingen.

The break had a maximum lead of 7'12. But as would be expected, were caught by the peloton. The teams wanted to have a sprint finish.

Unfortunately for Saur - Sojasun, a quick rise in pace caught most of the team out when passing through Regensberg for the second time. All but Sébastien Joly were left behind. The entire team worked hard to pull Casper back to the main field, but it was to no avail, they would all finish over 2 minutes behind the peloton.

As the sprint started without Jimmy Casper, Francesco Ginanni found himself in good position, sandwiched between Nick Nuyens and Romain Feillu.

The sprinters are tightly packed for the finish.

Ginanni was initially out in front, when stage 2 winner, Aitor Galdos, who was two wheels back, made his move. Shortly after, Daryl Impey, who was on Ginanni's wheel responded.

All three fought hard, but it was Impey who had timed his move the best to take the win.

Joly would finish with the main group in 42nd. Joly aside, it had been another disappointing day for the team.

Impey timed his sprint to perfection to take the win.

At least the other riders are several minutes back and can attack for a stage win.

@ roturn: Exactly.

@ baia: He's doing well, but he can't compete in the high mountains.

Tour de Suisse: Stage 5: Wettingen - Frutigen: 160.9km

So, I played this race almost 2 months ago, and have managed to lose the exported results and I deleted the replay ages ago. Therefore, I don't really know what happened. So, you get pictures.

I can't quite remember where Joly finished, but he obviously finished in the main group. Gilbert overtook Martens in GC based on the time bonus. If I remember correctly, I think Coppel and Hivert managed to stay with the main field today.

Nice attack with Joly, until now a good stage race from him.

Smowz
Caught up with this one, certainly tough for the team to make an impact on a race like this.

Joly though is showing himself, I wonder whether he can somehow muster a decent GC position (by decent I mean a top 15 or so).

Tour de Suisse: Stage 6: Meiringen - La Punt: 205.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/466.jpg

The queen stage.

The peloton would be tackling three massive mountain passes on the day, the Susten Pass, the Oberalp Pass, and the Abula Pass. They are all over 2,000 meters in height, with the last, the Abula Pass, being the 7th highest in Switzerland.

The climbs would be long and steady today. Their lengths and gradients are as follows: Susten Pass - 27.7km @ 5.8%; Oberalp Pass - 19.4km @ 5.9%; Abula Pass - 20.3km @ 6.4%.

Today should see fireworks.

Saur - Sojasun's two best mountain riders, Jonathan Hivert and Jérôme Coppel have been hampered by poor form and fitness, and therefore find themselves both down nearly 7 minutes on leader Philippe Gilbert. The team decided their deficit would give one of them the freedom to go into the break, despite their climbing pedigree.

Hivert, being fresher, was the rider selected to make the move. On the beginning slopes of the Susten Pass, Hivert attacked. Tommy Voeckler would move with him.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/467.jpg
Hivert and Voeckler fight to form a breakaway on the early slopes.

They would be successful in moving away from the peloton, however they would not be alone. Arnold Jeanneson (Caisse d'Epargne), Rafael Valls (Footon - Servetto), Iván Velasco (Euskaltel - Euskadi), and Carlos José Ochoa (Androni Giocattoli) joined them in the move.

They would move over the top of the Susten Pass 2'58" ahead of the peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/468.jpg
Voeckler grabs some KOM points as the group summits the first challenge of the day.

At the top of the Susten Pass, 3 riders would make an attempt to bridge to the break away. They were Michael Albasini (Team HTC - Columbia), Peter Kennaugh (Sky), and Kevin Seeldraeyers (Quick·Step).

They were able to make a connection with the breakaway at the beginning of the Oberalp Pass. The nine riders would summit the climb together, now with a much larger advantage. They were 9'51" ahead of the peloton.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/469.jpg
The break, now consisting of 9 riders, moves up the Oberalp Pass.

Despite some rain, the descent was without incident, as the riders made their way into the valley. It would be nearly 100km of fairly flat ground before the final and hardest climb, the Abula Pass.

The one minor climb of the day happened just outside the town of Flims. Here, 4 riders moved away from the peloton. John Gadret (AG2R La Mondiale), Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin), Stefan Denifl (Cervélo Test Team), and Vladimir Gusev (Katusha), were the riders in the late move.

They left the peloton 11'22 behind the breakaway.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/470.jpg
Gusev initiates the move, with 3 following.

The second group on the road made some headway into the break's lead, but never came very close.

The breakaway would go through the only sprint point of the day in Tiefencastel, around 33km from the line with a lead of 9'46. Even with the daunting Abula Pass up ahead, it seemed victory would go to a rider in the break.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/471.jpg
The break travels through Tiefencastel with a massive lead.

Sensing the moment, Jonathan Hivert moved to the front of the breakaway to push the pace on the early slopes. It was time to see who had the legs to make a winning move.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/472.jpg
Hivert leads the break up the early slopes of the Abula Pass.

Almost at the first increase of pace, Albasini and Voeckler dropped off the pace. The breakaway now consisted of only 7 riders.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/473.jpg
Voeckler and Albasini couldn't keep up.

Back in the peloton, a panicked chase had begun under the guidance of Team RadioShack. Lance Armstrong and Andreas Klöden were working for Levi Leipheimer. Their chase was beginning to eat into the lead of the break.

It was also causing havoc in the peloton. Only around 30 riders remained in the main group. Saur were represented by Jérôme Coppel and Sébastien Joly. So far, it was by far Coppel's best ride of the season.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/474.jpg
The small peloton about to catch John Gadret's group.

Up ahead, the breakaway was going under the 20km to go banner. They had a lead of 5'45.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/475.jpg
All 7 lead riders looked strong, but, 20km of climbing still awaited them.

Hivert, feeling strong on the day, again moved to the front. At first, it seemed as if everything would be status quo, when the break suddenly exploded. As Hivert kept grinding away, only Jeanneson could keep up with the Saur rider.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/476.jpg
Hivert and Jeanneson move ahead of the field.

As the two French riders led the race, the favorites started to react in the main field. The first to move was Leipheimer, who did so decisively.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/477.jpg
Leipheimer moves on the attack.

When Leipheimer left the peloton around 18km to go, he was 3'50 behind Hivert and Jeanneson.

Several other riders such as Denis Menchov, Kim Kirchen, and even teammate Lance Armstrong tried to make the move with Leipheimer, but he was too strong. They could never get his wheel.

Leipheimer quickly picked up and passed Albasini and Voeckler.

5km from the summit, Leipheimer reached the remnants of the break that Hivert and Jeanneson left over 10km earlier.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/478.jpg
Leipheimer charging up the Abula Pass.

Meanwhile, further up the road, Hivert had left Jeanneson behind. After hearing in his race radio about Leipheimer's furious ascent, Hivert knew he had to keep working hard.

He slowly ground the pedals and pulled away from his companion for nearly 200km.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/479.jpg
Hivert creates a gap.

As Hivert continued to work, behind him Leipheimer had moved up. Seemingly in a matter of minutes, he was behind Jeanneson with Hivert in his sights.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/480.jpg
Leipheimer moves out of his saddle to keep his rhythm up..

Hivert dug deep to fight off Leipheimer. He knew if he could summit the Abula Pass first, he could hold Leipheimer off on the 10km descent into La Punt.

However, 1km from the top, Leipheimer was on his wheel.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/481.jpg
A disheartening sight for Hivert.

As Leipheimer pulled in front, Hivert gave it everything he had to try to stay in the American's wheel.

He was empty, finished. Leipheimer would drop him in seconds and summit the Abula Pass alone.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/482.jpg
A safe descent is all that stands in Leipheimer's way of victory.

Leipheimer safely and surely made his way down into La Punt. And would cross the finish line first. A remarkable victory and climb. He made up 5'45 in 20km!

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/483.jpg
Leipheimer raises his arms in celebration. A great victory.

37 seconds later, Hivert would cross the line in 2nd. Seemingly unfair compensation for a great ride.

Even still, a good day for Saur - Sojasun. Hivert's ride moved him up into 46th. Joly would finish in 48th and ended the day 30th in GC. Coppel's 18th place saw him move up into 38th overall.

Great report. Pity that Hivert didn`t manage to win this stage, but 2nd ahead of so many favourites is great. Was Joly in Coppel`s group or behind?

Thanks.

I still can't quite figure out how Leipheimer made up 6 minutes in 20km. PCM...

Joly actually fell back a bit. He finished 10'02 back. He finished with Serguei Ivanov, Thomas Lofkvist, Johann Tschopp, Vasil Kiriyenka, Kjell Carlstrom, and Rasmus Guldhammer. Too be honest, I was too focused on Hivert to really manage Joly, or Coppel for that matter. But both were pretty much empty and just trying to hang on while climbing the Abula Pass.

Anywho...

Tour de Suisse: Stage 7: Savognin - Wetzikon: 195.2km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/485.jpg

The peloton moves out of the Swiss Alps and back into hilly terrain. This does not mean the day will be without challenges. Wildhaus Pass presents an imposing figure in the middle of the day. It is 9.3km of climbing @ 6.4%.

However, it is way too far out to see a winning move, but could be an indicator of who has strength after yesterday.

Yesterday, Jonathan Hivert went into a breakaway and almost won for Saur - Sojasun. Today, it would be Jérôme Coppel's turn. The young French climber has been a bit off the mark in the Tour de Suisse before turning in an impressive 18th yesterday. Even so, he is still nearly 13 minutes down on new leader Levi Leipheimer.

He successfully made the break with 11 other riders; Lars Boom (Rabobank), Daniel Oss (Liquigas), Luca Solari (Androni Giocattoli), Fabio Felline (Footon - Servetto), Cyril Gautier (BBox), Blel Kadri (AG2R), Kurt Asle Arvesen (Sky), Imanol Erviti (Caisse), Roman Kireyev (Astana), Maarten Wynants (Quick·Step), and Björn Leukemans (Vacansoleil).

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/486.jpg
The breakaway group.

It was almost immediately clear that the pack had no interest in chasing the break group. Perhaps they were using the day to rest after yesterday's arduous ride.

As Coppel led the breakaway group up the Wildhaus Pass, the break had a lead of 12'46.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/487.jpg
Coppel and breakaway group have amassed a large lead over the peloton.

Shortly after summiting the high point of the day. Boom would encounter trouble in the form of a flat tire. Thankfully, the neutral service car was on hand to complete a quick change. He would rejoin the break several kilometers down the road.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/488.jpg
Boom looks for help with his bike.

With 50km left in the day, the break was all still together, and their lead was 12'47, virtually unchanged since climbing the Wildhaus Pass. The commentators seemed hesitant to declare victory for the break given yesterday's events, but it seemed highly likely.

They would continue to ride well together through the sprint point in Wetzikon, 20km from the line. At this point, they had a lead of 10'32. From here, the riders would loop back out too climb a hill up to the town of Bettswil before coming back to Wetzikon.

The riders in the break were nervous, knowing the winner would come from the group.

Then, Leukemans and Solari took off. Coppel quickly reacted.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/489.jpg
Coppel, Leukemans, and Solari take off on the final climb.

The three riders created a gap of about 30 seconds as they went over the top. However, Gautier and Oss did a great job, clawing back the difference and bringing the group back together.

There would be two more attacks from Coppel, and one from Solari in the run-in back to Wetzikon. However, both riders were too tired to make much of impact.

The winner would be decided in a sprint.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/490.jpg
Coppel leads the break into the finish line.

Coppel had decent enough position, but was too exhausted, and isn't known for his turn of speed. He would slide back to finish in 9th. Another close call for Saur - Sojasun in their search for a stage victory.

Cyril Gautier, who did yeoman's work keeping the break together, narrowly out-sprinted fellow countryman Blel Kadri to take the win.

Back in the peloton, Joly and Hivert stayed out of trouble and with two stages left in the Tour de Suisse, the team has 3 riders in the top 34 and the KOM jersey. A much better situation than a couple days ago.

Tuco the Ugly
Tour de Suisse: Stage 8: Wetzikon - Liestal: 176.1km

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/492.jpg

With the exception of short, steep climbs, today should be fairly routine. It won't be a mass sprint, but there is unlikely anything to separate the major contenders.

Saur - Sojasun again elected to send a rider in the break in search of stage victory. With tomorrow's stage being a time trial, unless something crazy happens, this was likely the team's last chance. Therefore, Sébastien Joly was chosen to make the move.

Joly got into the right group and got away with 7 other riders.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/493.jpg
Joly and the break navigate the rolling terrain.

The peloton would not be so lenient with today's break. At the 1st KOM point, 73km into the day, the break only had a lead of 2'53.

The largest it got would be 50km from the finish. At this point, the break had a margin of 4'05.

This did not stop Joly from trying, as he often found himself at the head of the group trying to push the pace. The high pace of the break had unforeseen circumstances for the team. The speed of the break made for a hard chase from the peloton, something neither Jérôme Coppel or Jonathan Hivert could keep up with. Both riders were dropped from the main group.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/494.jpg
Hivert is dropped.

With news of his teammates bad days', the pressure now fell squarely on Joly's shoulders. With the peloton closing, Joly went on the offensive, attacking the break 17.5km from the line.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/495.jpg
Joly digs deep.

At the top of the climb, 15km from the line, Joly was only 45" ahead of the peloton. However, here, he found an ally. Fränk Schleck, currently 5th overall, jumped from the peloton and bridged to Joly. The two quickly started to work together in hopes of holding off the field.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/496.jpg
Joly and Schleck worked together well.

Both riders took their full turns, but with Team RadioShack chasing, they were never going to stay away until the line. The riders would be caught with 8km left. A valiant try.

The attacks were far from over. Former race leader and points jersey wearer Philippe Gilbert put in a dig, but the Belgian superstar was quickly covered.

Next, it was Russian Sergueï Ivanov. A strong attack saw the Katusha rider create a gap of 30 seconds.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/497.jpg
Ivanov uses his power to move away from the field.

However, once again, Ivanov's magnificent move would not be timed quite right. He would run out of energy and be re-absorbed by the peloton before the line.

In the sprint, former Tour winner Óscar Pereiro showed he still has some juice in his legs, winning the day.

Joly finished 28th, but Hivert and Coppel lost 6'20 and 7'16 respectively.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/498.jpg
Pereiro was the day's unlikely winner.

Tour de Suisse: Stage 9: Liestal - Liestal: 26.4km

The Tour de Suisse winds down with a fairly straightforward time trial in Liestal, the capital of the Basel-Country canton. Race leader Levi Leipheimer should have no trouble taking the victory, and could be in contention for a second stage victory. However once again, all eyes will be on Fabian Cancellara.

Engoulvent set the early time to beat, 38'40 in the rain.

It would be nearly two hours before Laszló Bodrogi lowered the time, which he did by 59 seconds.

David Millar was the first rider to break 37 minutes, he would finish 6th on the day.

Jérôme Coppel recovered somewhat from yesterday, finishing 41st, his best time trial of the year.

Bad luck with Coppel in the breakaway that he just finished 9th.
Good attack with Joly, too. But also bad luck.
At least you jumped into the top 30 after the timetrial.

It`s quite a good performance actually for a small team in a big race. Quite sure you will have more luck in the next races again.

Championnat de France (ITT): Chantonnay - Chantonnay: 50.0km

The French National Time Trial would be contested today. Defending champion is Jean-Christophe Péraud, who is the favorite to retain his title. The course is 50km long and relatively flat. Crosswinds could play a factor, but it has yet to be seen whether it will be make a real difference.

Other contenders for the title include Nicolas Vogondy (Bbox), two-time champion Sylvain Chavanel (Quick·Step), Christophe Moreau (Caisse), and Saur's own Jérôme Coppel.

Cyril Lemoine had a good ride for a mediocre time trialist. Seen catching Mathieu Perget, he finished in 30th.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/509.jpg
2007 champion Benoît Vaugrenard put in a good ride, finishing with a time of 1h07'32.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/510.jpg
Perhaps the surprise of the day came from Sébastien Minard. His great time of 1h07'05 was the time to beat for much of the day.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/511.jpg
Sébastien Joly put in a good ride, finish 10th, but never challenged to the top times.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/512.jpg
The 50km was a bit too long for Jimmy Engoulvent, who faded down the stretch. Even still, he finished 9th.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/513.jpg
Christophe Moreau gets out of his saddles during a flat section. He had the best time at the time check in Saint-Philbert-du-Pont-Charrault.

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/514.jpg
Coppel continued to show his growing form, but couldn't beat Minard's time. He would miss the podium by 14".

i985.photobucket.com/albums/ae338/Tuco39/Saur-Sojasun/515.jpg
The veteran Moreau was able to maintain his speed enough to easily take the victory ahead of Vogondy (who escaped photorgaphers) and Minard.
