Do strength training as that will help being able to turn the big gears. Use the gym, or do some seated power climbs. Ie go up a climb at a hard pace, but turn a gear bigger than you usually do. Only advised really for cyclists who have got lots of winter miles in them first though, as doing specific power training can end up ruining your muscles if they aren't used to the strain.
Ah, you did Totnes-Vire? Ouch.
Not a member of a gym, so will have to be power climbs... I don't have many winter miles though, 300... tbh don't really have a choice if I want to do faster TTs, so am going to do speedwork. My muscles probably won't get ruined |

To be honest, getting faster in TT's to start with comes with just getting a higher VO2 max, which is increased pretty much however you train. Once you start hitting 25 minutes for a 10 mile time trial, then you start looking at more specific training, or at least thats how i did it.
Yes i did indeed do totnes-vire, and yes indeed OUCH! I think i may have finished last overall... BUT i finished

Well, I'm trying to combine speed/distance. Want to take my '10' PB to sub-28 - first TT in a few weeks. I reckon it's possible though... |

Well good luck to both of you and stick with it! My first ever 10 mile TT i finished in 33 minutes and 47 seconds. Now i'm down to 24:59 i believe, and i think i can probably do it faster this year by a minute or so as well. So cycling is never a quick thing to get good at.

I've just made my PB in 2km TT: 2:38.957, that's 7 seconds faster than my time from month ago. |

Nowhere... very short prologues in UCI races?
To be honest, I've only raced 3 time-trials - all on seperate courses! PB 29.10, if I pace myself, I secretly hope sub-27 is in reach. But that may be dreaming - for now, sub-28 or at least sub-29 will do.
Definitely need to pace myself better and not die in the last quarter. Well, die, but a controlled dying, so my speed doesn't suffer too much |

Cool to hear that so much people are being quite busy with cycling. I myself am a giant dopeheads hater. That's because I wanted to start cycling about a year ago but my parents wouldn't let me because they were afraid I would also start using dope (and I didn't had the money to buy me a decent bike myself)...
Now I exercise a lot on the home trainer bike (long rides or TT's) or going to ride with someone, most of all short rides with a high average speed. Most of all I win these races but yesterday I had very bad legs and the other guy made a long sprint of it. He just started to ride at a very high, almost sprinting speed and I could barely hold his wheel... So I lost. In august I'll probably do some work to get money for my race bike and then I'll maybe join a team anyway, but first, much practice! |

Yes, It's on track. It's shortened pursuit race.
And they just cancelled the Czech cup TT (road) next weekend. Meaning, we now have about only 3 TT's.
Btw. We have just scored second place in team pursuit and that's my best placing in czech cup ever. Therefore my best placing was 10th in points race. |

I have:
A old old old GT road bike i got given when i started riding by a guy from my old club. Which helped a tonne getting started.
Then i bought a Giant OCR2 in 2006 for £500, which was my little baby for a while, and this past winters training bike.
Last August i bought a second hand Scott Speedster, the next level up from the £500 models, so an average standard really.
I also have a trusty bog standard mountain bike for just mucking around on, but i don't have it down at university with me, its at home.
I don't have a TT bike, so all my PBs etc are set on a standard road bike. I see a TT bike a waste of time at the moment when i can improve myself much more than a bike can. If i spent £6,000 on a TT bike i reckon that would knock off about a minute from my 10 mile TT pace, but if i just train harder i could knock off 3 minutes. (Plus the serious lack of money stops me spending...)
I will be selling my oldest two bikes to try and raise some cash for buying a carbon frame over summer, a set of deep section wheels over next winter, and making a bike up by next spring. Just in time to race and rip the pros to bits... ... yeah right!

I had some last year for my PB, but only borrowed. I need to buy some for this year - they help a lot in stage races.

Not allowed to use tri-bars in road races - I also only use my standard road bikes in TTs, which makes any slow time slightly better. Looking forward to earning money over summer so I can buy Campag Khamsins/Mavic Aksiums as new wheels. |
