Amgen Tour of California - Stage 3
Probably the most decisive non-time trial stage in the race, the two big hill/mountains could disrupt things and start to set the table with who the actual contenders are. We are all working for Michael Rogers in this stage.
All in all, the pace was pretty sedate for most of the day. Michael was feeling pretty good and attacked near the top of the second climb to cause some selection. At the top he led by a small margin over chasers.
A fairly large group of about 25 formed on the downhill. Unfortunately, Rogers was isolated without teammates. Not a great situation.
Without a great sprint and such a large group, we had Rogers attack again to see if he could break things up a little more.
But they waited too long to begin to chase! Rogers holds on for another victory from a late attack.
Mic celebrates his second stage win in this year's Tour of California. He's clearly in great form... winning this thing is looking better and better by the day.

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 4
No real opportunity to do anything with Mic, we just protected him and set up a sprint for Renshaw.
Sijmens took the stage, and unfortunately Cancellera took second, gaining some seconds on Rogers. With the big time trial looming, he's probably our biggest worry at this point. Renshaw took 5th.
Youngster Emmanuel Getman got dropped on the first hill and missed the time cut after a long solo ride.

Yeah... though Mic will go into hibernation after the TOC and emerge for the tour of Missouri at the end of the season.
He's really the only stage race threat I have... the others who can climb a little can't really TT well enough to do much.
Roche hopefully will be able to do something in the one day races in the middle of the season, and Farrar should win some sprints... but there's likely going to be a big lull in performance starting in March. I have to strike while the iron is hot. |

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 5
While it has a long flat finish, the series of hills in the middle could be problematic for some sprinters. First priority is to protect Rogers... second is to try something for Renshaw.
We sent Zajicek on the break today and he absolutely dominated the mountain sprints. He picked up 28 points today, which moves him up to second in the competition.
The pace over the hills wasn't too bad and we had both Renshaw and Rogers still there at the finish. Rogers moves up to provide a bit of a leadout.
Rogers works really hard... but Renshaw can't keep his wheel. When the sprint begins, Rogers has a big gap.
Just under a km to go. Renshaw is about to be caught, but Rogers is still hanging on...
And he does it! Way to go Mic!

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 6
A sprint stage... we just need to protect the lead and setup Mark for the sprint.
With a bit overy 1km to go, the sprint was being set up. Cancellera is at the front and Renshaw is fighting for position back in the pack. Rogers is marking Spartacus... but this isn't a good situation for us.
And it doesn't turn out well either. Pozzato wins the sprint and Cancellera is second, picking up bonus seconds on Rogers. Renshaw is able to climb into 10th. Mic's going to have to ride a good time trial.

Failed exporting the results.
Cancellera won the time trial, gaining 6 more seconds on Rogers. I'll try to copy a results list later... didn't know it failed the export until I tried to post this. |

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 8
Two stages to go and Rogers is still leading... but our team is getting tired. We have to hold on.
Zajicek goes with the break and picks up some more points. He's now leading the mountains classification.
Unfortunately, we let the break get a lot of time on us. Perhaps too much. While Zajicec is up front, Koen Barbe is up there too.. and he's only 5 and a half minutes back... with a 10 minute lead. The team is working hard... but this will be tight.
Barbe leaves Zajicek and Rodrigo Garcia to set out for the win. Zajicek had been trying to slow things down, but now it's up to the rest of the team.
The team is beat and it's still just under 6 minutes. Rogers is going to have to pull it back the rest of the way himself.
Barbe finishes with the win. Now the seconds start ticking by. Now minutes. One minute... two minutes... 3 minutes... 4 minutes...
And here comes the sprint from the main group. 4 minutes and 31 seconds... we did it. But that took a LOT out of us.
Zajicek picked up a nice 3rd place out of the whole ordeal though, as well as the climber jersey.

Trofeo Laigueglia
A bit hilly, this race is the first one where Nicholas Roche will take part this year. He's in decent form for not having road in a race yet and we have high hopes.
The pace was very high, and eventually a group broke off the front. Roche was a part of it, but nobody else from Gateway made the break.
The finish was visible off in the far distance as Roche goes back to get some water.
Just inside 5 km to go and Roche makes his move!
1 km to go and Roche is joined by Bjorne Leukmans... can he hold him off?
No... he cannot. But Roche holds on for second in his first effort of the season. Not to bad!
Export was corrupted. I seem to be having issues with that... when I export results and the game crashes the file doesn't work. |

Amgen Tour of California - Stage 9
Final stage of the race, it's all about holding on for dear life. We will NOT let Cancellera get those 10 seconds.
We let the break get WAY ahead again... foolishly as Huzarski is 7 minutes back. At least we don't have to get quite as close.
We burn out our whole team chasing again, but the gap is still not quite what we need. Rogers goes to the front to pull... we should make it.
Huzarski crosses the line.
And nearly five and a half minutes later, a fairly abbreviated pelaton crosses.
Stage results:
1 Bartosz Huzarski ISD 4h13'04
2 Adrián Palomares Contentpolis - Ampo s.t.

Giro di Sardegna - Stage 1
A small 5 day tour, Nicholas Roche will be leading the team, building fitness.
Leader: Nicholas Roche
Sprinter: Jonathon Bellis
Free: Christopher Baldwin
Teammates: Russell Downing, Simon Clarke, Phil Zajicek, Elija Tripp, Joe Leopard.
Several breaks went and we tried to get several riders in... but it wasn't meant to be. In the end Zajicek put forth too much effort and was dropped because of it.
It came down to a sprint. Roche and Bellis were in pretty good position.
Roce grabbed Paolini's wheel as he flew by and the two moved up in the bunch.
There was no getting around Paolini... but the two road his wheel into second and fourth place finishes. Two days in the saddle for Roche... and two podiums.
stage:
1 Luca Paolini Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo 4h19'41
2 Nicolas Roche GATEWAY RACING s.t.
3 René Weissinger Vorarlberg - Corratec s.t.
4 Jonathan Bellis GATEWAY RACING s.t.
5 Fran Ventoso CarmioOro - A-Style s.t.

Roche would wear Paolini's points jersey and Bellis would wear Roche's young rider jersey in the next stage. |

After playing for a bit on this career... I realize I'm not as interested in a continental team. I'm more looking for a pro-tour schedule.
So as much as I like the cow jerseys, I'm going to stop this story and try again with a pro-tour team. I'm thinking Katusha at the moment, but we'll see. |
