Luxury teammates

Marco Marcato
Talking about the start of his cycling career Marco says: “I don’t know the exact reason why I became a cyclist as there is no history of anyone in my family taking it up. I do remember that I kept asking my dad for a bike. When I got it I finished 11th in my first race, without any training.” In Italy cycling is more than just a sport. The competition among young cyclists is much greater then anywhere else in the world. Just alone the fact that in 2005 Marco managed to become a professional cyclist shows his talent

Marco became a professional in 2005 and triumphed in a stage of the Tour of Slovenia. The ex-accountancy student also won races in 2006 and 2007. Marco is looking forward to being part of the Vacansoleil team.

Martin Mortensen
In 2005 Martin decided to relocate from Denmark to Luxembourg to improve himself as a cyclist. The following year he finished in 5th place in Paris-Roubaix U23, 4th at the individual time trial U23 World Championship and he was the National Danish U23 time trial champion. Although he has been riding for a Danish team since 2007, he still lives in Luxembourg. He was the overall winner of the Danish Post Cup in 2007. In 2008 he won a stage in the Boucles de L’Artois and the prestigious couple time trial, Duo Normand.

When asked about his ambitions he said; “Cycling is the ultimate freedom experience and I want to display the yellow and blue of the team in the spring classics and the national championship.”

Lieuwe Westra
Lieuwe gave up cycling more than ten years ago and became floor layer and (most of all) party animal. However, in 2004 he began cycling again and made his comeback. In the Dutch classics he was nearly always in the leading group. He is now fully dedicated to his sport and during the winter trains for hours every day. This dedication has earned this former party animal the nickname “the beast”. In June 2007 he won the mountain jersey in the Ronde de L’Oise and the time trial in the Zeeuws-Vlaams cycling weekend. In 2008 he came second in the general classification of Olympia’s Tour and won a stage in the Tour Alsace. He acheived his first classic victory at the beginning of June 2008 in the Parel van de Veluwe.

The power and mentality of Fries will surprise the pro peloton in 2009. Lieuwe is very happy with his three year contract and he wants nothing more than breakthrough as a cyclist.

Johnny Hoogerland
Johnny is from the South West of the Netherlands and won the junior version of the Ronde van Vlaanderen at the age of 18. He stands out due to his high level of dedication during training and during the race. Johnny says; “Cycling is my life and I get to travel all over the world.” While he was studying international trade, Johnny received some remarkable results and finished in second place in the Paris-Roubaix U23. In 2008 he won the GP Wanzele, Ronde van Limburg, Ronde van Midden-Brabant and 14 other races. He finished in 3rd place in the general classification of The Ringerike Rundfahrt and Olympia’s Tour.

He is very enthusiastic about the 2009 season and would like to compete with the team in the final of the major races.

Wim de Vocht
When Wim was fifteen he trained indoors on the rollers during the week but at the weekend he was usually in the front group. Like Bobbie Traksel he won the U23 version of the Ronde van Vlaanderen. This Flemish man from the Belgium part of Limburg has also completed a bachelors degree in electro mechanics.

Wim is made for the spring classics. Wim, currently 26, knows the Belgium races by heart, is full of ambition for those races. After a few years doing the dirty work for others he believes the time has come to be in front at the finish line. He says; “To be in front at the finish a killer mentality is needed form myself and from the team. This will bond the team and give us fighting spirit. Then good results will certainly follow.”

Matthé Pronk
In 1998 Matthé made his breakthrough as a road cyclist. After completing a degree he postponed studying a masters in favour of cycling. In 1998 this man from Warmenhuizen won plenty of races including Olympia’s Tour, Ronde van Limburg and the Belgium classic in Oetinge. He became a professional cyclist in 1999 and has won a semi-classic in Belgium every year. In 2001 he took his place on the podium in Omloop het Volk. Matthé knows his way around the track and owns the world hour record.

34-year-old Matthé will be a great asset to the team as he is a skillful rider who is capable of racing and giving it his all on a weekly basis. According to Matthé the best about cycling is giving it your all. Matthé beleives this team will grasp every opportunity given to them. His personal goal is to play a major role in the team.

Teammates

Wouter Mol
When Wouter won one of the toughest autumn one day races, GP Jef Scherens in 2008 this came as no surprise for his team mates. Earlier that year the MTS engineering graduate kept ahead of the main pack for over 150km in the Brabantse Pijl. The 26 year old cyclist from the province of Noord-Holland is a loyal and dedicated team member. He has increased his level every year and is ready for the next step.

He says; “Since I joined the Fondas - P3Transfer Team in 2006, which was also managed by Daan Luijkx, I have achieved some good results. In 2009 I intend to be in good shape from early spring and I believe our team is solid, which will work well for us.” The team player is looking forward to the new season.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/mol.jpg

Reinier Honig
Reinier began winning races in the youth level categories. In 1999, 2000 and 2001 he was the national champion in his age category. At the 2006 national championship he showed his abilities for the first time against other professionals. Two years later the skillful rider outsprinted a complete front group in the Circuito de Gexto. In addition to his qualities on the road, the intelligent Reinier is also active on the track. At the latest European track championship he finished second in the stayer race.

Cycling has been the passion of the nine time Dutch champion since 1992. In 2009 this passion will now be his profession. When asked about his aims for 2009 he said; “I will attempt to attack as much as possible and do my very best for the team.”

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/honig.jpg

Arnoud van Groen
Arnoud finished in second place during the mountain stage of de Tour de Guadeloupe in 2003 and since then he has developed into a fighter. The former resident of Amsterdam finished in third and second place successively at the prestigious Dutch season opening of the Ster van Zwolle in 2007 and 2008. In addition, he studied a business mathematics degree at university.

Arnoud says “For me the best thing about cycling is that I can see myself improving year after year. This has helped to keep me motivated against the cold Dutch weather.” When asked about his goals, he answered; " My goals for 2009 are to stay healthy and to compete in as many races as possible to keep improving. Helping the team is important and I am aiming for some good results”.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/groen.jpg

Jens Mouris
Jens was a contender on the track at the Olympic games in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. At the world track championship in Bordeaux 2006 he finished in second place on the individual pursuit. Since then Jens, who got the passion for cycling from his father and uncle, has won time trials and one day races. The resident of Amstelveen won the prologue of Olympia’s Tour in 2002. Last season he won the prologue at the Delta Tour Zeeland and came second in the time trial of the Tour of Belgium, behind the winner of the ronde van Vlaanderen; Stijn Devolder.

“The best part about cycling is the satisfaction you get after a great performance as an individual or with the team. Besides that I am grateful to cycling for showing lots of places and cultures,” says Jens about the benefits of cycling. The year after the Olympics in Beijing will be the first year for Jens to fully commit himself to the road.

Young riders

Wout Poels
Limburg is the best area in the Netherlands for uphill cycling. It's there Dutch cycling talent Wout is born and raised. Inspired by his brother Norbert, Wout started riding a bike at the age of thirteen and, eight years later, he became a professional cyclist. The slender Wout made his breakthrough in 2008 finishing third in Rund um Düren, third in the general classification of the Spanish stage race Lleida and he won the GC in the Vuelta Ciclista a Leon. For years Spain has produced fantastic climbers and the fact that Wout can do better than Spanish riders in their own country shows his abilities as a climber. Wout's results in 2008 led to a nomination for the most promising cyclist in the Netherlands. At the moment Wout is studying Marketing and Communication at the Johan Cruyff College in Nijmegen.

Wout says about the following season: “I still have much too learn, nevertheless I hope to show my abilities in the hilly races.”

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/poels.jpg

Thijs van Amerongen
In 2004 Thijs stood on the podium at the Dutch junior road championship. However, he is more a cyclo crosser then a road cyclist. Almost ten years ago Thijs participated in his first cyclo-cross event and later also began racing in the road events. In the 2007-2008 season he obtained some good results. That winter he finished on the podium at a weekly basis at super prestige races for riders U23. He eventually won the general classification of the super prestige. In the U23 world cup ranking he finished in 5th place overall. In addition to being a professional cyclist he has also completed an engineering degree.

His main aim for 2009 as a cyclo cross cyclist is to compete with the best.

10-01-2009: Australian ITT Championship

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/raceAusChamp.gif

ITT Buninyoung: 40,8km

This morning I got the results from the Australian ITT Championship. For Baden (Cooke) this TT is just a test to see were he stands at the moment. He didn't expect he would be able challenge the two race favorites; Cadel Evans (SIL) and Michael Rogers (THR).

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-10AusChampTT01.jpg
A nice picture from Baden. He is the first one to wear the new team jersey in an official race. He would end up 7th.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-10AusChampTT02.jpg
Micheal Rogers set an impressive time beating the best time with almost a minute. However it only is good enough for 2nd place.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-10AusChampTT03.jpg
That means the new Australian ITT Cahmpion is Cadel Evans. He beats Rogers with half a minute.

Results
1 Cadel Evans Silence - Lotto 55'04
2 Michael Rogers Team Columbia - High Road + 30
3 Adam Hansen Team Columbia - High Road + 1'22
4 Cameron Meyer Garmin - Slipstream + 1'35
5 Luke Roberts Team Kuota - Indeland + 1'49
6 Brett Lancaster Cervélo Test Team + 1'54
7 Baden Cooke Vacansoleil Pro Cycling Team + 1'57
8 Mark Renshaw Team Columbia - High Road + 1'59
9 Peter Latham Bissell Pro Cycling + 2'08
10 Gene Bates Drapac Porsche Cycling + 2'23

A descent performance from Baden he does lose about two minutes on Evans, but he is 35 seconds away from a podium spot. I heard he was satisfied with his performance. Let's see if he can do better on the 13th in the road race. It will not be easy, because he hasn't any teammates.

13-01-2009: Australian Championship

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/raceAusChamp.gif

Buninyoung: 163,2km

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp01.jpg

I was up early this morning to follow the Australian Championships through a live ticker on the internet. The race consisted out of 16 laps on a 10,2km long course. It was basically 16 times up and down the same hill. Even without being able to watch the race it was still exciting one to follow.

Now that I have received some photos of the race I'll tell you what happened and how Baden (Cooke) did.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp02.jpg
In the first lap 6 riders escaped, amongst who Robbie McEwen (KAT) and Christopher Sutton (GRM), they build up a lead off almost 2 minutes in the next two laps.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp03.jpg
Then for some reason riders from Cervelo and Columbia cranked up the pace of the peleton and with over 130km to go it was even Cadel Evans (SIL) himself who on the climb closed the gap to the breakaway.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp04.jpg
After that display nobody dared to try anything for the next 60km. In the 10th lap with 72 km to go it was Wesley Sulzberger from the Française des Jeux team who decided it was time to give it go. When Baden saw Stuart O'Grady (SAX) react he didn't hesitate and jumped after him.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp05.jpg
The break, consisting out of O'Grady, Sulzberger, Baden, Rory Sutherland (OCM) and Gene Bates (DPC), worked well together and in 3 laps they build up a lead of 6 minutes. With only 4 laps left and no team in the peleton that wanted to do the dirty work, it looked like the winner would have to found in the front group.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp06.jpg
At the end of the 13th lap It's O'Grady who attacked. baden hesitated for one moment, but then countered.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp07.jpg
At the foot of the climb Baden had almost reached O'Grady's wheel, but then he cracked and Sutherland stormed past him on the climb.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp08.jpg
At the top Sutherland managed catch up with O'Grady. They had a gap of 20 seconds with Baden, who had joined by Sulzberger and Bates again.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp09.jpg
It might seem like 2 against 3, but Sulzberger and Bates led Baden do the dirty work. As a result the gap growed from 20, to 35, to 50 seconds with one lap to go. It was clear the two strongest riders were in the front.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp10.jpg
In the background 5 riders had left the rest of the peleton behind, but Gerrans (CTT), Rogers (THR), Evans, Loyd (SIL) and Trent Lowe (GRM) were with only 12km to go still more then 3 minutes back on O'Grady and Sutherland.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp11.jpg
Sutherland didn't try or couldn't attack O'Grady, who had no trouble beating him in the sprint. So it's O'grady who will be wearing the national jersey this season.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-01-13AusChamp12.jpg
Baden had put too much effort in trying to chase down the leading duo and couldn't hold of Bates and Sulzberger in the sprint for 3th. He had to settle for 5th.

Baden got a very good result and road a strong tactical races, but one rider was even more clever and most of all stronger today; Stuart O'Grady. That's no shame, however Baden most be very disappointed at the moment. This was a very big opportunity for him to win this race.
The fact that he had to do it all by himself today has maybe cost him the race. Hopefully we'll get him motivated again for next months races. Baden has been a dedicated professional for 8 years now, so I don't expect that will a very big problem.

20-01-2009: Training camp Benidorm

Another update from me. this time not from Belgium but from Spain. Last week we took the whole team to Benidorm on a training camp. Only Baden, who is still in Australia and will travel to Europe next week, and Borut (Bozic) ,as he and his wife are awaiting the birth of their first child, are not with us.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/tcamp3.jpg
The remaining 19 riders are here training every day on the Costa Blanca in small groups. they are riding between four to six hours a day.

Our Psychologist Jack Voesenek has also visited the team and talked with the group about the best ways to communicate and behave as a team. The riders have also discussed how they expect to be treated by each other and by the staff.

The day after tomorrow the team will return to their various homes in Europe and then we have to decide which riders will ride our first races; the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise (1 February) and the Tour of Qatar (1-6 Februari).

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/tcamp1.jpg
Michel (Cornelisse) and me will make the final decision. Michel will go to Qatar and I'll (luckily) stay closer to home and take part of the team to the south of France.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/tcamp2.jpg
The team's morale is high and I can't wait until we can start racing.

31-01-2009: The day before our first race

Today we arrived in Marseille, because tomorrow our season really starts with the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise (1 February) and after that were staying in France for the Etoile de Bessèges (4-8 February).

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/Marseille.jpg
As you can see from the view form our hotel it was a beautiful day today.

I've high expectations, because we have a very strong squad here at the start. Our team leader for this one day hilly race will be;
- Björn Leukemans (Hill: 76).
Besides Björn we have 4 riders that basically all have a free role;
- Sergei Lagutin (Hill: 74),
- Marco Marcato (Hill: 73),
- Gerben Löwik (Hill: 73) and
- Bobbie Traksel (Hill: 72).
We also have two very experienced riders at the start tomorrow;
- Aart Vierhouten (Hill: 67) and
- Frederik Veuchelen (Hill: 67)
The last riders, that together with Aart en Frederik will have a supporing role is;
- Reinier Honig (Hill: 67).

We have had an excellent preparation leading up to this race and the riders are anxious to show themselves, so I'm expecting some fireworks from them tomorrow.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/Marseille2.jpg
When we arrived here the squad went on a short relaxing ride to stretch there legs. We took the opportunity to insect the last 20km of tomorrows race.

01-02-2009: Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/racelaMarseillaise.jpg

Allauch - Aubagne: 149km

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise01.jpg

The day of our first race of the season has finally arrived and when I looked at the start list I noticed we had one of the stronger teams at the start. The other strong teams were:
- Caisse d'Epargne (with Luis León Sánchez and Dani Moreno),
- Cofidis (with David Moncoutié and Rémi Pauriol),
- AG2R (with Alexander Efimkin and Cyril Dessel) and
- Française des Jeux (with Benoit Vaugrenard and Jussi Veikkanen).

The other two of the six Pro Tour teams at the start were:
- Bbox Bouygues Télécom (with Pierre Rolland) and
- Astana (with Benjamin Noval).

It's time to tell you if the team could deliver the fireworks I promised.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise02.jpg
Aart (Vierhouten) countered the first attacker of the day, Julien Mazet (AUB). Three other riders joined them, but they never got more then 1 minute. 10km later they were caught again.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise03.jpg
The second break looked to be more succesfull, when they managed to build up a lead of 2 minutes within 10km. It was Gerben (Löwik) who represented our team.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise04.jpg
However some riders in the peleton couldn't stand that they weren't part of the break and attacked the peleton. It suddenly started raining attacks. The result was that 10km later the front group contained 23 riders. Of course Cofidis and Caisse weren't going let such a big group get away and chased down the the break.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise05.jpg
With less then 100 km to go and no one in front, it was Gerben who was controlling the pace of the pack up one of the smaller hills.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise06.jpg
With 80km to go, near the top of the pas de la Couelle, it was Noan Lelarge (BSC) who tried to force a break. From our team it was again Gerben who countered.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise08.jpg
10 km later the break of 6 that was formed had gotten a lead of 2 minutes. The break consisted out of Lelarge, Hannes Blank (CCD), Florian Morizot (BCS), Kenny De Ketele (TSV), Gerben and Theo Eltink (SKS).

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise09.jpg
When the peleton reached the col de l'Espigoulier, with 14,1km the longest climb of the day, it were again Cofidis and Caisse that controlled the pace. They made sure the gap with the break didn't get any bigger then 2 minutes.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/2009-02-01laMarseillaise10.jpg
When with only 12km to go, halfway up the col de la Gineste, the break only had 30 seconds left, it was time for some the favorites to make a move. David Moncoutié (COF), Benjamin Noval (AST), Cyril Dessel (AG2), Pierre Rolland, Björn (Leukemans) and Sergei (Lagutin) were amongst the riders who tried to jump and reach the breakaway.

When the new formed front group reached the top (7km from the finish line) I was a very proud men. It contained three survivors of the original break; Morizot, Lelarge and Gerben and the four new guys were Noval, Dessel, Björn and Sergei. So we had three riders in the front group now.

Björn sacrificed his changes, because he felt Sergei and Gerben had a better chance to finish it of in the sprint. He kept a high pace which was needed, because only 30 seconds behind followed a group of 9 riders with Luis León Sánchez (GCE) and a few other strong riders. With Sergei and Gerben in his wheel Björn reached the last km, which was uphill to the finish. At that moment Morizot attacked with Lelarge in his wheel.

Morizot, one of the original breakaway riders, was still surprisingly strong, but so was Gerben.

It was a close finish, but Gerben just managed to push his wheel over the finsh line first.

A great win for Gerben. He deserved it because he was very strong today.

I promised fireworks and the team delivered. I was confident that the team would get result right from the start, that also was our goal. Nonetheless it's amazing that we have won the first race we participated in.

I'm very proud of the team and of how they worked for each other. I'm also proud that we as the staff managed to make this group of riders into a team in such a sort period. I can't wait for the champaign this evening.

Very nice win! Gerben really deserved it when you look back at the race! I'm also doing a Vacansoleil Career but my stats are a bit different though, like Hoogerland has 74MO, 76Hi. Probably because of his Vuelta and Lombardia performance!
