Stage 4: Willunga-Willunga
Critical stage today as the overall race will likely be won on the final climb of the day. Discovery Channel plan is to send whomever looks most fit on the final climb to try and secure a top 5 spot.
We did not send anyone in the days break as Beppu's KOM jersey looked secure. 7 riders ultimately got away and reached a 6'10" lead with 100 km to go before Predictor-Lotto began realing them in.
The days break
The break was caught by the time the peloton hit the final climb. Our best hope on the climb, Jason Donald, was not looking up to it still with early season fitness issues. Markus Reich, on the other hand, told the team car he was feeling very good today and wanted to take a crack. When the break started, we gave Markus the greenlight to go as well as Beppu who was looking to secure the moutain points. Unfortunately, neither had the legs to get up the climb and were easily caught. 4 riders did get away, however, led by Eros Capecchi who was looking like a man of destiny. In there as well was Sebastien Joly, young Jonay Pereiro and Simon Spilak.
Capecchi is first over the mountain top
The four managed to buid a 1'40" lead as they reached the finish line. Joly looked most fit after the climb and took the stage with Capecchi nailing down the overall lead. Discovery Channel riders were nowhere to be seen. Somehow the race photographer fell asleep and no photo was taken at the line (call it growing pains in my story).

Stage 5: Adelaide City Council Circuit
The final stage is short and flat and perfect for sprinters. We decided to send Markus Reich in the early break to let him stretch his legs a bit. After a couple of separate breaks, ultimately 10 riders got away. On such a short stage, 10 riders could be very dangerous. The race was made more interesting when 4th placed Jonay Pereiro went down. However, no teams looked to take advantage and his teammates got him back to the pack.
With 60 km to go, Predictor-Lotto took up the chase, catching them with 20 km to the finish line. It would be a mass sprint. It looked like Eros Capecchi was going to stay out of this one for safety sake. His form had been so good that Cavendish stood no chance in a sprint with him, so things were looking up. Cavendish again struggled to catch a wheel, however, and was pretty drained by the time the sprint started.
Eric Baumann would put up a good performance and take the stage. Cavendish finished 5th.
Baumann wins the sprint
We did not get our top 10 finish but that was not a total surprise given poor overall team fitness. However we did manage to come away with the KOM jersey for Beppu, so the race was not a total loss. Eros Capecchi took away a well deserved overall first.

February Schedule
We start to step things up a bit in February:
11/02-15/02: Challenge Vuelta a Mallorca
18/02-25/02: Tour of California
27/02-03/03: Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana
Our main goal for the month is to get a result on our home turf at the Tour of California. Jason Donald will be our main man there with Tyler Farrar looking for the points jersey. Secondary goal for the month is preparation for the cobblestone season and warm-up for our first sponsor goal of the season: Paris-Nice. |

Not 2009, but the above logo is the best I could do!
Past Winners
2007: Inigo Landaluze (Euskatel)
2008: Samuel Sanchez (Euskatel)
2009: Stijn Devolder (Caisse d'Epargne)
2010: Diego Milan (Caisse d'Epargne)
2011: Vladimir Efmkin (Saunier Duval)
2012: Jaume Rovira (QuickStep)
There are a number of great riders here this year. Caisse d'Epargne has to be considered the favorites, bringing a very strong team led by Humberto Amilcar and strong support from Maxim Belkov and Gomez Marchante. This kind of race could be perfect for a rider like Di Luca or Boasson Hagen, meanwhile Nibali will try and steal it for Milram. Tough spritner competition here from the likes of Boonen and Boasson Hagen.
Discovery Channel will not be looking for a win here, rather further preparation for the Tour of California. We expect Cavendish to compete well in the sprints with more fitness under his belt. Ardila could go for the KOM jersey.

Thanks. Definitely planning to keep this going for the long-term (although I suppose everybody plans it that way at the beginning). I'm finding it easy enough to do, the only thing I find frustrating is that when I copy and paste the export results I get huge gaps so I need to go line-by-line to clean it up. Anybody have a solution for this?
One side note on the Tour Down Under this year which I found interesting. For anybody who has played with PCM Spain they know that starting from 2008 (I think) each season you get a crash in the 4th stage (believe it is the 4th) and only way to get around it is to bypass the stage. For some reason that did not happen this season and I was able to race the TDU all the way through for the first time since my first season. |

Stage 1: Palma de Mallorca
A 7-man break goes early, followed immediately by 5 more.
With today's stage lasting only 100 km, 12 men in the break could prove dangerous. Discovery Channel moves forward to reel the break back in.
Shortly after the break is caught (with 68 km to go), Geert Steegmans goes down taking 7 riders with him including Fothen, Jimenez and most notably Liquigas team leader Marcel Wyss.
Several teams, including Caisse d'Epargne, seek to take advantage of Wyss' fall and take the head of the peloton.
However, helped by the bulk of the Liquigas team, Wyss and company are soon back in the Peloton.
Earlier, seven riders had managed to get away but as the peloton closed in, Karpets and Rus inexplicably decided to attack despite on flat ground and despite the quick pace of the pack. They were quickly caught.
It would be mass sprint finish. Cavendish initially followed Van Heerden but ended up on Boasson Hagen's wheel.
Cavendish stayed on Boasson Hagen's wheel as he changed trains while Haussler found the wheel of Boonen.
As the sprint started, Cavendish looked well positioned, continuing on Boasson Hagen's wheel while Haussler stays tight on Boonen.
Boasson Hagen appears to be in poor fitness and was doing little to help Cavendish so Cav makes his move, leaving Edvald in his dust.
As the finish line nears, Cavendish has moved into second while Haussler has passed Boonen, but is it too late for the win?
Cavendish made a good go of it but it looks like Eloy Teruel is just going to hang on.
Teruel celebrates a surprise win. Cavendish takes second with Haussler in 5th - a good result in his first stage of the season.
At the finish line we learn that Markus Fothen crashed once again down the stretch and had to withdraw from the race. Tough day for Markus.

Strange, these last batch of screenshots came out looking pretty bad. Tough to read the names, etc. Anyone have any advice?
EDIT: I should note that my computer is fairly old and being held together with duct tape (tough to find an English language computer in Korea) so the graphics are not as sharp to begin with. Still, when I am editing the screenshots they look much better than when posted here.

Stage 2: Cala Maillor - Cala Bona
Eight riders go in the early break.
The lead gets to 6'30" with 110 km when Discovery and Team Nicolas Mateos (defending yellow) go forward to begin the chase.
For the second day in a row with the peloton going at full speed on flat ground, a big name tries to attack. This time it is Samuel Sanchez along with 5 others. What is he thinking? Needless to say he is easily caught and the break is caught 20km from the line.
11.5km forom the line, Verdugo goes down and takes a large number of riders with him. No big names though.
With 7km to go, Cavendish's position in the sprint train is not looking good thanks to Van Heerden who struggles to bring him forward. Haussler and Farrar look much better off.
Van Heerden makes a move to put Cavendish in better position, just behind Farrar and Haussler, but both lose a lot of energy in the process.
Cavendish starts his sprint but it looks a lost cause. He doesn't have it today and positioning was poor. Farrar looks the strongest of the 4.
In the end, Rodriguez takes first followed by Geert Steegmans. It is a bad day for Discovery Channel with Farrar finishing the best at 8th place.
Unfortunately I did not export the results of the race. |

Stage 3: Pellenca - Mirador d'Es Colomer
Should be an interesting stage today with an uphill sprint finish. Perfect for Haussler, although his fitness could be an issue.
Ardila goes with the early breakaway, chasing mountain points. The break ends up consisting of 7.
Ardila is first over the top to grab the initial mountain points of the day.
Once again, Ardila powers over the top first and grabs the maximum mountain points for the day. He'll wear red tomorrow.
The break gets a maximum 6'30" lead with 102 km to go before Fuerteventura begins to do the work for the pack. It is a great effort for the break to try and stay away, but the are finally caught just 19 km from the line.
With 6 km to go, Jason Donald helps Haussler position himself towards the front of the pack for the final climb before falling back. Good effort from Jason.
As the sprint starts, Haussler is near the front along with Chavenel, Landaluze and Nibali.
Nearing the line, Devolder passes Haussler as Heinrich begins to struggle. His fitness just isn't there yet.
Nibali will get the win today but Haussler hangs on for 5th. A great result with such low fitness.

Stage 4: Soller - Port de Soller
Todays route culminates in a climb followed by a downhill finish. After the effort put in by Haussler yesterday, if his form looks good and the favorites attack on the final hill we will send him as well to try and hold his top 10 spot.
Ardila goes with the early break, which includes Aleksandr Pliuschin, to defend his red jersey.
A number of secondary attacks are made, most of which the peloton brings back in, and ultimately a group of 7 forms with another 4 chasing.
Ardila informs the team car that he is not feeling good today. He struggle to keep up with the tempo of the break and is unable to capture the first set of mountain points. He'll go on to lose his jersey today.
The break reaches a lead of 6'30" with just under 100 km to go when Caisse takes up the chase.
Meanwhile, three of the four chasing the front pack manage to bridge the gap and the break is now ten. The break ups the tempo and with 60km to go, the lead still stands at just over 6'.
The break sees the chance and attacks begin from Rey and Kannemeyer. Knowing that the break has upped the tempo, and seeing that Caisse is struggling to drive the peloton forward; Astana, Milram and QuickStep send troops forward to help.
Finally the peloton does the job and catches the break on the final climb.
The effort of chasing down the break has left the peloton drained and no attacks come over the final peak. It will be a downhill sprint finish and Jason Donald pulls Haussler forward to help position him for the final sprint. Cavendish, Farrar and Van Heerden are too worn out from the last climb to be able to participate.
The sprint starts and Haussler may be too far back to have an impact.
Nevertheless, he gives it his best shot. Saunier Duvals' Donato Cannone, having gotten a great lead out from Mauro Facci, looks like the man to take the stage today.
Indeed, Cannone will take it. Haussler manages to finish 5th. Haussler and Cannone were dead even on time coming into this stage so Cannone will take 5th overall on the basis of finishing position. Still, with tomorrow's stage not offering much in the way of risk, Haussler looks set to take a top 10 in his first race of the season which would be a great result for Discovery Channel.

Stage 5: Magalluf - Palmanova
While there are no dangerous hills or mountains in today's stage, there are a lot of mountain points in play. Therefore, Ardila goes with the early break to try and reclaim his KOM jersey. Matteo Bono does not make it into the break of 6, however, Jaime Miguel Pardo Del Burgo of T-Mobile does. Del Burgo sits on 13 moutain points coming into today while Ardila is on 27 (4 back of Bono). Efmkin, Niermann and Tolleson all launch an attack to try and catch the break.
At the first hill, Del Burgo launches an attack which surprises Ardila who is not able to respond. Del Burgo takes maximum points while Ardila only manages 4th across the line. This puts Ardila only 1 point behind Bono but moves Del Burgo to within 7 of Ardila.
Ardila pushes a higher pace up the second mountain and splits the break in two with Del Burgo in the trailing group. Ardila does not attack across the top and is happy with 2nd which puts him in the virtual KOM jersey.
With 84km to go and the break enjoying an 8' lead, Caisse moves forward to begin the chase.
Meanwhile, the break has come back together plus Efmkin and Tolleson have managed to bridge the gap so the break now stands at 8. Ardila takes 2nd in the third climb. He'll add a 2nd place in the 4th climb for good measure but he's already guaranteed the KOM jersey.
The break gets over the final hill still with a 1 minute lead. It's a good effort but they will ultimately be caught with 8km to go. Before that happens, at the 10 km mark a massive crash occurs which takes out 30+ riders including Farrar, Boasson Hagen and others.
As a result of the crash and many sprinters failing to keep the pace over the final hills, the sprint train is looking pretty ragged. Van Heerden tires to pull Cavendish forward while Haussler looks for a wheel after getting split off from the other Discovery Channel riders.
As the sprint starts, the Discovery Channel sprinters are looking a bit too far back to make an impact.
Both Cavendish and Haussler try and make a move but Cavendish is boxed in and Haussler has a hard time getting through the mess in front of him.
It won't be Discovery Channel's day in the sprint today but it will be Rabobank's. They will manage an impressive 1-2-3 with Claeys taking an unexpected win followed by Vicioso and Del Nero. Great positioning and sprinting by Rabobank.
Heinrich Haussler will hold his 6th place in the overall standings and Ardila takes home the KOM. All-in-all a good result for what was basically warm-up race. Stijn Devolder takes home his second race win in Mallorca - little surprise that Caisse d'Epargne would finish on top with such a strong team here.
Unfortunately I neglected to export the results so here are the final top 10 standings (little changed from stage 4):
1 Stijn Devolder Caisse d'Epargne
2 Inigo Landaluze Astana
3 Vincenzo Nibali Milram
4 Sylvan Chavanel Nicolas Mateos
5 Donato Cannone Saunier Duval
6 Heinrich Haussler Discovery Channel
7 Diego Gallego Vina Magna
8 Rinaldo Nocentini Milram
9 Ruben Reig Orbea-Oreka
10 Carlos Castano Analucia-Cajasur
