Cancellara holds out in 4 man race to the line
By: Gregor Brown
The penultimate stage in Australia and a chance for those ahead in their respective jersey races to put their seal on a victory tour in Adelaide tomorrow.
If only cycling was that predictable! Although Boonen failed to win the stage, losing out to SaxoBank rider Cancellara in the sprint, both the Polka Dot jersey and the Young Rider jersey will see a change of hands going into the final stage.
In the mountains an early intermediate win for Garmin-Slipstream rider David Millar looked to put him in with a shout to clinch the jersey, yet Belgian Scheirlinckx would sneak ahead of long time leader Bertogliati by snaring his 3rd point on the 2nd intermediate.
Even more surprising was the slump in performance of Matthew Goss who lost his dominant control in the Young Riders section, slipping 44" off the pace as Greg Van Avermaet (Silence-Lotto) takes control.

The excitement was not just contained to the individual pursuits however, as the team time leaderboard saw another shake-up with the Americans Team Columbia High-Road gaining a significant advantage over the pack, to take a +1'40" advantage into the final stage.
Adelaide will be a city packed full of intrigue tomorrow as all the contenders and pretenders will play their part in a tense finish to a memorable Tour Down Under.

Post Race Comments:
Tom Boonen (Quick-Step): "I think nerves are a benefit at this time of a race. Right now I am in a position where we have achieved our pre-tour goals. Of course tomorrow will be tense, but with a little luck and consolidation I hope to end the tour with the Yellow Jersey firmly on my back"
Matthew Goss (Team SaxoBank): "Massive disappointment for me personally... we had a few issues within the peloton and in the end I became stuck in a place that left me exposed. If I am honest I think thats my chance gone, but we will be ready to perform tomorrow and see how we fare"

Boonen's Done It
A perfect end to the tour for Belgian Boonen
By: Gregor Brown
Its over and what a finish to the tour as the dominant Belgian Tom Boonen wrapped up his 4th stage win to waltz away with the overall crown, following the 90km circuit stage in Adelaide.
There was little hope for the other riders before the race and with his burst for the line, Boonen ensured that there would be no mis-haps on route to his Tour Down Under success.
Above: Boonen in his familiar yellow jersey looks easy down the final sprint
Outside of the overall crown, the other jerseys were retained by those who led after Stage 5. Scheirlinckx fully deserved his King of the Mountain crown, whilst Van Avermaet's late surge in the Tour helped him claim the Young Rider crown with a comfortable finish in Adelaide.
Above: One to Watch! Van Avermaet (front) rolls home to celebrate his victory as the Tours top Young Rider
Finally to wrap up our coverage of the Tour, the Americans Team Columbia - High Road kept their cool as a team to hold onto their team time lead and gain their first success of what could prove to be a solid year for their roster.
2009's Tour Down Under provided us with many highlights, from mass falls, to dramatic punctures and tactical implosions. Yet through out it all Tom Boonen approached each stage with a driven focus that would bring him the ultimate success. See you in Qatar!
Post Race Comments:
Tom Boonen (Quick-Step): "Brilliant, its a great achievement for me and something I will always be proud of. I had alot of help from the team so I would like to thank them for their support, but we have alot more to achieve in 2009"
Al Kooba (Garmin-Slipstream General Manager): "I dont want to come across too harsh here as we came to Australia with a different team and hoped they could pull out some success. And although we had some minor moments to build on, the overall result is disappointing and something we have to work on if 2009 is not going to be a write off before we get started"

Team Columbia Lead the Way
Top and Bottom, American teams face extremes
By: Les Clarke
A blistering start in all senses to the Tour of Qatar as the desert heat played its part in a tough team time trial as the riders paced their way around Doha to begin the tour.
With the 20 teams ready to set off, the early pace was set by a pair of Belgian teams as Silence-Lotto and then Quick Step held healthy leads. Then as the teams reeled through the finishing line, it proved to be a bonus for Americans Team Columbia - High Road, who would come home with a 23" lead.
Above: Team Columbia honoured for a fantastic team effort in Doha
At the opposite end of the scale, a strong Garmin-Slipstream team led by Christian Vande Velde, found themselves peddling through treacle as they wound up over 1 minute behind and at the foot of the leaderboard. A result that has pretty much finished their individual rider chances of obtaining any success.
Above: German 'Bert Grabsch holds the yellow jersey ahead of his team mates
Out of the time trial came the Tour's initial yellow jersey holder as the German Bert Grabsch claimed the prize ahead of his team mates following a strong finish to the stage in Doha.
Post Race Comments:
Bert Grabsch (Team Columbia - HighRoad): "I am proud to wear this jersey after todays stage. But as always its a team effort and even more so in a time trial, to ensure that we win. All of us know that we have a good chance of success in Qatar as the lead is healthy and something we can build on as the tour continues"
Al Kooba (Garmin-Slipstream General Manager): "We came here focused on improving on our performance in Australia, thats why I bought 8 strong riders... yet today we failed to give anything near the effort required to be considered as a decent cycling team. I am annoyed at the minute, the team knows it and I hope they understand that this team does not accept anything other than being the best"
