Better than PCM08?
My opinion, yes!

Well, having played PCM08, I must say that this 09 really feels a lot like the 08 version.
Apart from the update in the race, the game itself (the manager section) is totally the same to me. They removed a few things, and added a few things, and that's about it.
Just like press interviews, you can't select anything anymore. The answer is automatically given.
Also, where are the manager skills now? That was something I liked, and I see no reason why to remove it?
And to come back to the race updates, I feel that it's too hard to select riders now. The font has been made so much smaller, and so have the little windows, not sure why they did that... |

After having played a little more i can say that i'm getting more and more excited. Played through some mountainstages and i think i'm noticing something.
There are much less riders with midrange stats. The specialists seem have stats that separate them way more, stats-wise, from the pack than before. For instance:
Vincenzo Nibali, who i consider to be a tough climber, i would've guessed around 77-79 has 75.
The mountainhelpers that, the previous years, have had 75ish in MO (Garate, Weening, Van Goolen etc.) now have in the low 70's.
What i find interesting is that riders with 78 and 79 seem to be up there on the last climb more than they did before. And a good helper with 75 will actually get you quite a ways up the last climb before giving in.
So if this hunch is correct, they made the stat-spread wider, but they lowered the impact of the differences a little. Which means that 3 times out of 5 you'll see the 80+ guys winning the stage. But every once in a while a 78-79 rider till be there.
It was, to some extent, like this in 08. But the high 70's seem more powerful now than ever. Which is great! And you can, if you dedicate yourself a little, get some really decent results with the mid 70's guys.
This is after riding maybe 11-2 mountainstages since yesterday. Actually, a 75 guy, Pauriol of Cofidis, won on Mt. Ventoux vs. all the big guns yesterday evening. I was like... stunned, but happy!! :-) |

I've found the new track modes pretty un-inspiring so far. |

Another note on the mountains. Using a regular attack while a big rider is pulling the group hard is much less effective than previous years. You really need to time your attacks to perfection, and more than before, just use them to get a gap and attempt to pull away by brute force. A few examples:
Playing as Liquigas, attacked with Pelizotti at the bottom of the climb, got a gap and went 75%. After a little while Evans started relaying hard, Contador tried to attack after a few km. but he wasn't getting anywhere. He must've spent a lot of yellow, cause he went for a while, but we never lost touch with him. Basso sat firm on Evans wheel, and as soon as Pelizotti was caught and Evans stopped his relay, Basso attacks. He gets a big gap without spending very much yellow because of the slowdown in the group, and was able to effort 75% all the way to the top alone.
Don't get me wrong, it is still possible to get a gap from a group that's going fast if you do it at the right moment, but it seems more realistic now. Some riders do well with multiple accelerations, some do better by grinding the gap back down.
Grinding it down will often leave you with more energy than an actual attack, but it can be risky if your competitors also go flat out. Never panic and use all your yellow to attack and catch the other favorites! Look at your consumption and how many and how tough the remaining km. are.
Overall the mountaingame seems much more dynamic now. As i mentioned earlier, it seems that by being clever, and considering your tactics more, you have a better chance of doing well with riders outside the favorites. As always, plateaus and small descents on your way up are good opportunities to attack and distance yourself with minimal loss of yellow bar, so study the climbs well by zooming in on the profile.
Definately an improvement so far over 08's gameplay. I'll try and move on so some flat/hilly stuff now and see how that pans out. |

I was wondering the same thing. Cause 08 ran like crap for me in the end for some reason. 09 is so smooth! Much better than 09. So you should be good DP. |

Do all the favourites still attack at the base of the last KoM on all hilly and mountain stages? |

Don't expect it to come earlier than 10th of July, I'd say. You Brits are always behind on this area. |

I hate that. So stupid, even if the Mountain jersey is secured, they still attack for points.

This, I think is mainly down to which .db you use.
With Divinity from NCL, breakaways made it on a regular basis. I think mainly because the lowest flat stat anyone had was 70, so the break could power along. |

26th of June was the original release date for Scandinavia and Britain. Scandinavia has been postponed until the 1st of July, and Britain for 10th.
International version was released today. |
