TOUR DOWN UNDER - STAGE 5/6
Julian Dean, Timmy Duggan, Ryder Hesjedal, Trent Lowe, Christian Meier, Cameron Meyer, Christopher Sutton
José Luis Arrieta (AG2R La Mondiale) started off a day of constant attack about 5 kilometers into the day's stage. All told there would be 4 sets of attacks and cathes by the time the final break hung on.
Team Saxo Bank and Team Quick-Step never let any breaks get more than 45" until the final attack came just about halfway through the stage.
José Iván Gutiérrez (Caisse d'Epargne) looks over at Mikhail Ignatiev (Team Katusha) as he sets off on the final attack of the day. Trent Lowe saw his opportunity to claim the KOM jersey with Buffaz not joining the break. All he would need is one point to win the jersey.
Gutiérrez takes the first KOM points of the day. Trent took the final point available by finishing second ahead of Ignatiev and Nicolas Roche (AG2R La Mondiale). He now has clinched the KOM jersey.
With the jersey his, Trent calls for the car and awaits his instructions for the rest of the race. After discussions, he decided to lay off and work his way back to peloton and see if he can help Julian keep up.
By himself most of the day, Gutiérrez easily takes the second KOM as well. The peloton is now in the background and ready to swallow him up.
As expected, the sprinter's teams timed it to perfection and with a few kilometers remaining the sprint is on.
Unfortunately, the hills at the end of the stage were too much for Julian. He was unable to styay with the lead pack and is now out of contention for a high GC finish.
And Yuri Trofimov (Bbox Bouygues Télécom) takes the stage and control of the GC as he beats out Murilo Fischer (Liquigas) and Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank).
Although we would have liked to have somebody in a place to challenge the GC, I think we have learned alot about our team in this race so far. We have a short flat stage tomorrow which will show off the sprinters abilities. Hopefully Julian can recover from today's effort and have a strong showing. With a 20" bonus going to tomorrow's winner it should be a highly contested race with over 60 riders within 17" of the lead. We did take the KOM jersey with Trent and that is a nice accomplishment so we are not coming out emptyhanded.

TOUR DOWN UNDER - STAGE 6/6
Julian Dean, Timmy Duggan, Ryder Hesjedal, Trent Lowe, Christian Meier, Cameron Meyer, Christopher Sutton
The final stage of the Tour Down Under is a flat 50 kilometer run through Adelaide. Our goal will be to get Julian in a nice position for a good showing in the final sprint.
The break established itself about 10 kilometers in. Their largest gap was 1'16".
With 30 kilometers remaining the leaders have been reeled back in by a joint effort of Quick-Step, Astana and Saxo Bank.
Learning from past mistakes, Julian finds himself a nice spot on the wheel of Allan Davis (Quick·Step).
A fall in the final 3 kilometers cost Ryder the chance of finishing the race. How unforunate to come this far and end your race this close to the finish line. Three riders were injured in this mass crash; Ryder Hesjedal (Garmin - Slipstream), Tom Leezer (Rabobank) and Mark O'Brien (Drapac Porsche Cycling).
Mark Cavendish takes the stage win and with the bonus time takes the GC title as well. Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) finishes second and moves into the GC top 5.
Julian Dean finishes strong just ahead of Gert Steegmans (Team Katusha) to claim the final podium spot for the stage.

When all is said and done we can't be too disappointed with our achievements here in our first Pro Tour race. We took the KOM jersey and had two 3rd place finishes from Julian Dean. A huge dark spot in the race came with the injury to Ryder Hesjedal. The doctors have had a look and have diagnosed a torn patella tendon. Prognosis has him out until at least April. He is going to have to miss a few races we had him penciled in for like Tour Mediterranean and Eroica. Hopefully he recovers quickly and can be back in form in time for the Giro. Now we are going to rest for about a week before the Tour of Qatar. It starts with a Team Time Trial so we should have a good showing early. |

Today's goal is to make sure we keep Hans and Martjin in the front of the peloton to make sure they do not end up behind if the peloton splits. We are in good position to start the race for the GC so we will do what we can to stay there.
The break established itself fairly early but the 6 riders never got more than 2'15" ahead of the group.
We were set up nicely to make the front end of the split but it took a little more effort than we had wanted and we were unable to participate in the sprint at the end.
Lars Boom (Rabobank) takes the stage win in front of Brad Huff (Jelly Belly Cycling Team) and Murilo Fischer (Liquigas). Our group of 4 was able to get the same time as the leaders so we still have a good position in the GC.

POINT STANDINGS
Tomorrow we face much of the same as today as we will go from Camel Race Track to Qatar Foundation. We should be able to position Hans and Martijn better for a good finish in the sprint. Right now our goal for the tour is to finish in the top 10 in the GC. I think it should be possible with enough attention paid to the details of the races. |

With Mike, Hans, Martijn and Brad all in GC contention the tactics are quite simple. However, they will not be easy. winds are high today and we will have to work hard to make sure our guys stay ahead of the split.
A good sized break of 10 riders got away today. It took about an hour to establish but once they settled in the lead swelled to as much as 6'08".
With 15 kilometers to go, the pack caught the break and split as well. With shrewd planning and a bit of luck all 8 of our riders were able to make it into the lead pack.
As we set up for the sprint Hans and Martijn were able to catch the wheel of Lars Boom (Rabobank). Unfortunately there was a stumble just ahead of us and we were knocked out of the sprint. We did however, all stay on our bikes and finished with the leaders.
With many of the sprinters being affected by the slip of a few riders, René Mandri (AG2R La Mondiale) was able to beat Alex Rasmussen (Team Saxo Bank). Thankfully there was no time gap there either as Rasmussen moved into 2nd place overall with the bonus time.

Baby steps. We were able to be in position for the sprint and grabbed a top man's wheel. Bad luck kept us from being able to showcase. We still have our 4 guys in the top 10 and our goal of a top 10 is looking more and more promising. Hopefully tomorrow a few things can go our way and we'll get a good showing in the finish. |

Please chime in on the new formatting. It takes me almost a third of the time to put together a race report than it did, but the times and standings are images now so it may take longer to load or look funny on a different monitor than mine. Let me know if this doesn't look good and I will switch back to the long way if needed. |

Another windy day in the desert. Goal today is the same as yesterday. Keep our contenders in the front group. Go for the sprint if it comes down to it. Will has told us he is feeling good today so we might try to put him in the break.
Will takes off to try and be in the break. He just didn't have the legsafter all.
In fact, only Sergei Renev (Astana Cycling Team) and Jonathon Clarke (Jelly Belly Cycling Team) were able to get away. They were caught however by a hard charging pack led by Liquigas squad who is trying to get Murilo Fischer into the sprint.
Martijn get a wheel in the lead group for the sprint.
He digs down deep but can't find enough to get by Lars Boom (Rabobank) and Fischer.

GENERAL CLASSIFICATION
POINT STANDINGS
A good result today as Martijn rode his way onto the podium and into 2nd place overall. Only two days left and clearly the goal now is to keep our man on the podium come the last day of racing. With Boom sprinting the way he is I don't think we will knock him off the top, the only thing that will cost him would be a fall or a mechanical. |

With Martijn sitting in 2nd place overall we need to protect him and make sure he stays up there. Do I even need to say it is a windy day?
Liquigas once again spearheads the chase to bring in what was a 8 man break today.
Maaakant grabs the wheel of Lars Boom (Rabobank). Hans is right behind Martijn.
With nothing left after yesterdays sprint, Martijn does not even compete for the win. Instead it is Aldo Ino Ilesic with a huge win for Team Type 1.
STAGE RESULTS
GENERAL CLASSIFICATION
POINT STANDINGS
Martijn was able to hold onto 2nd place heading into the last day of racing. Hindsight tells me Boom may have held back a little with the 2nd place rider on his wheel. Another learning experience perhaps. With a 36" lead, we will need a gap to win the race so I think we will just be happy with what looks to be a good opportunity to have two riders finish in the top 5. |

One more day and we can chalk up two top 5 finishes so long as everything goes well. We will not be doing any attacking unless we need to in order to protect our positions.
A small breakaway again today. Markus Eichler (Team Milram) and Stéphane Poulhiès (AG2R La Mondiale) pull away after many early attacks. Almost 70 kilometers into the race these two established a 4'05" advantage.
The leaders were eventually brought back in and Martijn made a great move by grabbing the wheel of Alex Rasmussen (Team Saxo Bank).
Nico Eeckhout (An Post - Sean Kelly Team) edges Murilo Fischer (Liquigas) for the stage win.

POINT STANDINGS
Lars Boom (Rabobank) wins the 2009 Tour of Qatar
Objective completed. Two riders in the top 5 and another 5 in the top 20. Too bad for Wiggo he flatted today late in the race and couldn't make his way back to the lead group. So this wraps up a successful Tour of Qatar. Next up for the team is Tour of Langkawi with Tour Mediterranean and Tour of California right on it's heels. It will be a busy next couple weeks as we will be running three races at a time for a few days.

The 14th edition of the Tour de Langkawi is an improved, compact version of the event with more opportunities for the leader’s jersey to change shoulders. The race kicks off today with a 135 km stage that includes three intermediate sprints and one category 3 climb.
Although I appreciate the vote of confidence, I find it a little disturbing that Bardonali chose a rider who is not participating in the race to be his favorite.
The break got away early and the 5 riders grabbed a lead as high as 6'03"
LPR and Cofidis led the charge to bring back the leaders through the beautiful scenery of Malaysia.
As the break is caught acceleration by the front of the pack caused a split in the peloton. 33 Riders are in the lead group with Cameron and Chris both making the front pack.
Luca Paolini (Acqua & Sapone - Caffé Mokambo) gets the stage win.

MOUNTAIN STANDINGS
We were able to get into the sprint with a top 10 finish. We had some trouble grabbing a wheel and with a couple more sprint stages before the mountain we should have our opportunity to show our stuff. The rest of the riders worked hard to catch the leaders before the sprint so we all got the same time as Paolini minus the bonus time. |

After the warm-up of a relatively easy first stage, the peloton moves into a more challenging stage two with today’s 161.7 km stage 2 that is relatively flat and includes three intermediate sprints and one category 4 climb.
After the climb early in the stage the pack began to see attacks from many riders. 50 kilometers into the day, the break was established with 10 riders in it. This was a big group so they were never given more than 5 minutes on the group.
As we moved into the finish Chris was able to get the wheel of Alessandro Petacchi (LPR Brakes Farnese Vini) in preparation for the sprint.
Clearly we chose the fastest rider to take us out, unfortunately he was a little too fast Petacchi pulled both Chris and Cameron across the finish line behind him.

We showed we can compete in the sprints out here today. We kep Christian in the GC hunt as we get closer to the climb up the Genting Highlands. We have a longer stage ahead of us tomorrow but is relatively flat. The guys are feeling good after today and are looking foward to the coming few days.
